Danny DeVito Makes Late, Awkward Arrival to Twitter

Not long ago, when Twitter was still a Net nestling, giddy fans would flock to the micro-blogging site just to see if any new celebrity tweeters were providing voyeuristic glimpses into the exclusive, decadent, and lavish lifestyles of the world's wealthiest and most beautiful.

Now that the site is overpopulated with no-talent hacks, reality stars, and various D-listers, the arrival of celebrities elicits little more than a yawn. Arriving with absolutely no fanfare or hoopla, Danny DeVito made his inaugural tweet last week, and promptly announced to his 'hordes' of waiting followers that his "nuts are on fire." It looks like someone has been giving Mr. DeVito some lessons in micro-blogging.

New Clutch Bag Helps Foil Paparazzi

New York University student Adam Harvey has designed a new bag with a very limited target audience, but the interested few might provide enough financial support to help make his creation a success.

The 'Anti-Paparazzi Clutch Bag,' as reported by Wired, employs an extremely bright LED light that is triggered by a light detector. When a paparazzo attempts to capture a candid of a celeb in a compromising situation, the LED is activated by the camera's flash and emits a piercing light. That responding light creates a glow on the photograph which purportedly blurs out the face (or the nether regions of young starlets getting out of cars) of the intended target.

While the bag may be a success with some camera shy celebs, other attention-starved media darlings don't want to avoid publicity to keep their names in the news. Harvey may have another audience, though, in reveling college students who don't necessarily want their spring break exploits captured on the Web for the world to see. [From: AHProjects via Wired]

RIM Shows Employees That Celebrities Use BlackBerrys

Oh yeah, we know a certain dutiful crew in the R&D labs at RIM are toiling away on the BlackBerrys that we'll be swooning over in the years to come, but what winner took the time (and what champion instructed him / her?) to conjure up this PowerPoint slide?

Reportedly, this here slide was used within the company to show just how awesome its handsets are, because clearly, if six rich people accept free phones well before the street date from you, that equates to stellar quality and usability. Oh, and just remember RIM -- we'll bet Motorola used to brag about all the superstars with RAZRs, too. See how far that got 'em?

Scientology Goes After Blog for Posting Video of Tom Cruise

For those of you unfamiliar with the Church of Scientology let us give you a very, very abbreviated background. Scientology was started in 1952 by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. The secretive religion has proven to be very popular amongst the Hollywood elite, but has faced allegations that it harasses critics, abuses members trust, and is not a religious organization but a commercial enterprise and a cult.

Tom Cruise is one of the organization's most visible and vocal proponents. Not long ago at a ceremony held by the Church of Scientology International (CSI) Tom Cruise was awarded the Freedom Medal of Valor. His wild-eyed video acceptance speech talking about how Scientology holds the answers to everything made its way on to pop culture and gossip blog Gawker. CSI immediately jumped to legal action, as many of its critics would have expected, sending a cease and desist order to Gawker accusing them of violating copyright law by posting the video from the award ceremony.

Gawker has so far refused to remove the video, arguing that it was posted in the context of "news reporting and critical commentary" and therefore falls under the fair use doctrine. CSI has yet to respond, but we're pretty sure this isn't over yet. The Church of Scientology is, if anything, determined, as one BBC reporter found out.

The entire terrifying video, from fervent introduction and speech by the church's supreme leader David Miscavige, to border line psychotic description of the church by Tom Cruise is available here. And don't worry if they get taken down, we've got copies too.

Update:
Those videos in the last link were removed as expected. But don't worry as you can see we've already reposted. We're keeping an eye out for black SUVs parked outside of our apartments now.

Hacked Alicia Keys MySpace Page Could Leave You With a Virus

MySpace is a minefield. Time magazine even put the social-networking site on its list of 'Five Web Sites to Avoid.' Even we here at Switched have posted endless coverage of the sexual predators, spammers, and hackers that have made the MySpace risky at times for anybody not browsing with a sandboxed Firefox browser.

Now, the hackers have managed to expand their attacks beyond the usual faux profiles or hijacks of your friends pages. They're starting to hit the MySpace pages of celeb musicians such as Alicia Keys.

The hack is actually quite sophisticated and involves multiple avenues of infection. Just visiting Keys' page prompts spyware to attempt to install itself on your PC.

If that fails, the page will then ask you to install a codec to allow you to view a video. The codec is fake and if you accept the installation, you will get instant spyware infection! If that fails, the entire background image of the page is a link. Miss any of the legitimate links on the page and you'll be taken to a Web site registered by a Chinese company Xiamen Hua Shang Sheng Shi Network Co. Ltd. That Web site also tries to install malicious code on your computer.

It's a big mess!

Security experts at Exploit Prevention Labs, a company that tracks pages containing malicious code, spotted the hack when Keys' s MySpace page was flagged by users of the company's LinkScanner system.

Keys's page has been confirmed as being cleaned by MySpace and LinkScanner.com, but all that could change in a matter of days.

Real Bloggers Post as Fake Celebrities

Oprah Blog
Everybody loves a good celebrity blog. Now, from a team of bloggers comes a new site that just about every celeb lover or hater can appreciate openly. Called News Groper, the site is a collection of parody blogs written as if posted by celebrities. Impressively, there are over 50 of them ranging from Oprah Winfrey, who posts "My branded products shall be as plentiful as the stars in the sky," to a contribution from Vladimir Putin who describes his vacation at Kennebunkport with the Bushes:

"At lobster diner, we talk about Iran. I play the role of 'Good Putin', and I agree with everything the Americans have to say on the subject. At dessert, I plan to play 'Bad Putin' and flip over the buffet in an awesome display of rage and power. However, they serve cherry Jell-O jigglers, which are my favorite, and I agree to make some concessions on the nuclear missile shield being placed in Europe."

Celebrity Nerd or Not?

There's really nothing worse than celebrities pretending to be nerds. They already have their "real lives" in the "real world" full of "pretty people" and "gift bags" and "flying quotations" -- but do they still need a slice of nerd-cool to extend their appeal to those of us with Mario tattoos and Domino's on speed dial?

Anyway, if you're really bored or interested in feeling bad about yourself, GameDaily has put together a "Nerd or Not?" compilation of this summer's biggest stars, ranging from Pirates of the Carribean 3's Orlando Bloom to Transformers' Shia LeBeouf. Did you know that Kirsten Dunst was the only Spider-Man 3 star who skipped out on doing voiceover for the Spidey videogame, or that the aforementioned LeBeouf started his own hip-hop record label?

Well now you do, and we're still nerds, and they're still not.

The Switched Questionnaire: Jamie Kennedy

Though his sketch show The Jamie Kennedy Experiment is long over, actor-comedian Jamie Kennedy is keeping busy with a new movie, Kickin' It Old Skool, about an early '90s rapper who falls asleep and wakes up in 2007, Rip-Van-Winkle-style. Though he plays a throwback in his latest film, Kennedy is no stranger to cutting-edge gadgets -- in fact, he's a fixture at many a Hollywood PlayStation or Sidekick party. We asked Jamie about his gadgets to see just how he deeply he kicks it New School.

What gadgets do you always bring with you to the set?

I like to bring my Apple iBook, Sidekick 3, and Bose headphones wherever I go.

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love/hate about it?

I have a Sidekick 3. I love that it's really easy to use, but I hate how flimsy it is.

Who's the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?

The last person I sent a text message was my sister. I wanted to see if she got the 'Kickin' It Old Skool' t-Shirt I sent her.

Where do you go pretty much every time you get online?

When I'm online, I like to check out iTunes, YouTube, StupidVideos.com, Stickam.com, MySpace, Dorks.com, AOL, Digg.com, Gamefly.com, IGN.com, and JamieKennedy.com! ;)

What annoys you most about your iPod, cell phone, or laptop (or any other gadget)?

I get annoyed that they're not all together. I'm tired of carrying so many gadgets. They should be merged already.

Name one thing you wish your iPod/cellphone/laptop (any gadget) could do that it doesn't do now?

I wish my cell phone could do everything my computer can do. The Internet on my cell phone isn't that good.

What upcoming gadget can you not wait to get your hands on?

I'd like to check out the iPhone and see if it's for real.

You're stranded on a desert island: What gadget do you bring?

If stranded on a desert island, I'd bring a computer. The island's probably wireless.

Tell us what's the most-played song or artist on your iPod.

The most-played artist on my iPod would be Jay-Z.

Blackberry, Sidekick, or Treo?

I would pick the Sidekick.

Are you getting an iPhone -- if so, why?

I'm thinking about it. It seems very user friendly and I like the fact that I don't have to listen to voicemail. The phone actually turns voicemail into text messages. That's pretty amazing.

What's the longest time you've ever spent playing a video game in one sitting and what game was it?

The longest time I have ever spent playing a video game would be when I played the original Tomb Raider, from 11pm - 6am.

The Switched Questionnaire: Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff
We knew Hilary Duff was more than just a pop-music (and movie) star -- after all, she has her own perfume-, bag-, and clothing lines – but we had had no idea she was so tech-savvy. Lucky for us, Duff took a few minutes out of her busy schedule performing songs off her latest album, 'Dignity,' to tell us about her favorite gadgets and games. And when you're done reading the questionnaire, be sure to check out our special gallery featuring Duff and some of her favorite gadgets.

What gadgets do you always bring with you to the set?

I am really a cards type girl. I like board games too, but as far as gadgets, I used to have a T-Mobile Sidekick. Now, I use my T-Mobile BlackBerry to text my friends and email interview questions instantly.

Who's the last person you sent a text message to and what was it about?

My sister. I was asking her what she was doing for dinner and whether she had time to go to Pilates with me.

Where do you go pretty much every time you get online?

I go to shopbop.com and different magazine sites like Elle and Glamour. I also check out YouTube a lot.

What annoys you most about your iPod, cell phone, or laptop (or any other gadget)?

Dropped calls on my cell phone annoy me the most. When you are in the middle of a conversation and a loud beep goes off in your ear and then the line goes blank. Also, sometimes my iPod goes crazy and freezes and I can't do anything until the battery goes out.

Name one thing you wish your iPod, cell phone, or laptop could do that it doesn't do now?

I wish my cell phone could play my favorite TV shows on voice demand. It would be cool if my laptop could go to applications and iTunes by voice command, too.

Is there an upcoming gadget that can't wait to get your hands on?

I can't wait until they get Slingbox for Macs!

Good news, the beta version of Slingbox for Macs is out now. But back to the interview: You're stranded on a desert island: What gadget do you bring?

Definitely my BlackBerry so that I could get help!

Tell us what's the most-played song or artist on your iPod.

It varies from day to day. Right now it's Regina Spektor or Fiona Apple.

What cell phone are you using right now and what do you love or hate about it?

The T-Mobile BlackBerry 8700, I moved from the Sidekick because the Sidekick was big and more like a toy. I like the BlackBerry, it has a cool pin system for BlackBerry-to-BlackBerry communication.

Blackberry, Sidekick, or Treo?

BlackBerry.

Are you getting an iPhone?

I'll wait and see how people like it. The first of anything always has glitches and kinks to work out.

What's the longest time you've ever spent playing a video game in one sitting and what game was it?

I am not a video game player, but a few years ago I played a game I think it was called Vice City. It was so violent that I had bad dreams that same night. I hear the Nintendo Wii is a cool system.

Crazy Alec Baldwin Voicemail

Check out this crazy voicemail message on TMZ, in which an enraged Alec Baldwin chews out his 12-year-old daughter Ireland for well over three minutes for not picking up the phone at the appointed time. We feel for both Dad and daughter, because we've gotten into plenty a tussle with friends or loved ones over missed cell phone calls.

This happens for a number of reasons: no cell-phone reception (dead spots are everywhere), empty batteries, a vibrate mode that doesn't vibrate quite hard enough, or silenced ringers that we forgot to turn back on. It's just a reality we've learned to live with in this mobile age – we just can't get everyone else in our lives to see it that way.

And apparently Alec Baldwin doesn't see it that way either. But we wonder, what's nuttier: a Dad yelling at his 12-year old kid, or a tween girl leaking her embarrassing voicemails of her father to Web sites? (Or was it mom, Kim Basinger, doing the leaking?)

Update: Don't Mess With Mandel

It seems our post concerning 'Deal or No Deal' host Howie Mandel's denied request for an iPod case has reached the very upper-echelon of management at case manufacturer, Pelican. None other than the company's CEO, Lyndon Faulkner, has reached out to the journalist who put in the original request on Mandel's behalf.

And get this: Not only is Howie getting his case, but Faulkner claims to "enjoy Howie Mandel's work and would love him to have an iPod case." The full olive branch follows.

Dear Michael, thank you for contacting me, I am sorry your experience with getting some free product looks to have had some obstacles.

We are always happy to support serious reviews about our products, although we do have a process of formally requesting such product out of our facility here in California.

I think that was Keith's positioning in his response to you and please don't misinterpret our position, we are actually inundated everyday with such requests for review, samples, celebrities, Military, ETC ETC.

I would ask that such requests be channeled through here where they can be considered in association with the thousands of other requests.

I will be happy to consider any request you have for our cases and to support your review of our product.

What were you actually looking for to review?

Also, I enjoy Howie Mandel's work and would love him to have an iPod case.

Where should I send them? I would like to include a short note...

Thank you for contacting me.

No 'Deal' for Howie Mandel

No 'Deal' for Howie Mandel
Hosting your own prime time cash-giveaway bonanza apparently isn't all it's cracked up to be. While celebutantes Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, et al. have no trouble scoring free, diamond-encrusted Sidekicks and BlackBerrys, Deal or No Deal from T-Mobile and other companies (better-known as "swag"), host Howie Mandel can't even pry a lousy iPod case from the greedy hands of case-maker Pelican. Below is an email exchange between Pelican and tech journalist Michael Somner, in which Somner is denied a request on behalf of his famous friend, the Howster. (Read until the end, it's worth it! Or, skip to it here)

Please send me a 1510 Carry On Case (with padding) and (1) i1030 and a(1) i1010 both in black for Howie. I will see Howie next weekend here in FL, so if I can get them by then that would be great.

Thanks,

Text-Crazed Lindsay Lohan Gallery

Yesterday, we linked to GQ's Lindsay Lohan interview, conducted entirely by BlackBerry, which got us thinking--where else and what else does Lindsay type on her little portable messaging device? And, to whom does she send these many texts, for that matter? (She got a lot of flack for texting condolences to the late director Robert Altman's family last November.)

These days, the notorious party-cum-recovery girl takes her BlackBerry everywhere from the velvet ropes of nightclubs to the doorways of rehabs, but it wasn't so long ago when she toted around a Swarovski-Crystal-encrusted Sidekick (so very 2004-era bling). We found a bunch of fun pictures of a text-crazed Lindsay from the past couple of years and figured we'd share them with you in this fun little gallery, below (with captions by Tom Conlon). We're just guessing what she's doing (and who/what she's texting) in each of these pictures, but if you've got any better ideas, let us know below.
