Britney Spears Isn't Dead; Her Twitpic Account Was Hacked

Twitpic accounts belonging to celebrities like Britney Spears and Ellen DeGeneres have been hacked, according to various reports. Hackers apparently posted false information via the compromised accounts, most notably claiming that Britney Spears had died.

Spears was announced dead after hackers took over her Twitpic account (discovered yesterday), no doubt inspired by the maelstrom of recent celebrity deaths. According to MTV, one post stated, "Britney has passed today. It is a sad day for everyone. More news to come." The post has since been taken down, with Spears's staff assuring fans that she is still alive and kickin'.

Britney Seeks Harvard Grad to Update Her Facebook Page

Britney Spears is taking no chances when it comes to her online image. The queen of pop (that's what we call her around here), is looking for someone special to manage her social networking pages.

By special,of course, we mean that the person must be a student at Harvard University or a graduate thereof. The job listing, posted by Spears' online manager on a Harvard-only message board, demands that applicants be "addicted to social networks such as Myspace and Facebook," and that they "are a popular culture addict passionate about the intersection of Silicon Valley and Hollywood." The official job title is "Britney Spears media manager 2.0."

Though we can't help but chuckle at the hilarious requirements, we can't really blame her. That girl (who we love) needs all the good PR she can get. [From: Yahoo!]

Obama Doesn't Quite Top Yahoo! Searches of 2008

The polls are in, and it turns out the winner should actually be dancing from one: the term "Britney Spears" was officially more searched for than "Barack Obama" in 2008. While Obama's presidential victory got more attention than any other story on yahoo.com this year, the more toxic of the two had more total hits.

In fact, Obama came in third in overall searches, behind World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) as well. Others on Yahoo's top 10 list included American Idol, Japanese manga cartoon series 'Naruto,' online game 'Runescape,' actresses and a grip of actresses including Miley Cyrus, Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan and Angelina Jolie. Sounds like Yahoo's users are all Us Weekly readers and teenage manga fans.

Oh, and the most searched news stories included "pregnant man." Sigh. For a slightly different profile, check out Google's Marisa Mayer revealing some of Google's top searches of the year on TV. [From: Yahoo!]

Celebrities Fighting Back Against Fake Twitter Profiles

Twitter, while fun and useful, has become a breeding ground for hacks who dream of becoming the next Fake Steve Jobs. Lance Armstrong, Britney Spears, and Al Gore have all recently joined the microblogging service and have had to reclaim their online identities.

Last month, Britney launched a new blog style site and snatched up therealbritney on Twitter. Now, Al Gore has been forced to act on his promise to join Twitter (he said he would in an interview several months ago) in order to thwart the attempts of TheRealAlGore to capitalize on his celebrity. Rumors were circulating that TheRealAlGore was in fact the real Al Gore, and the fake account racked up a couple of thousand followers very quickly. The real life Al Gore (confused yet?) acted quickly and launched his own account al_gore and confirmed its authenticity. TheRealAlGore lost a vast majority of his followers, and al_gore had amassed over 6,000 within a few days.

Lance Armstrong recently had to address a similar issue. Instead of simply drowning out the impostor who owned the lancearmstrong username on Twitter, Armstrong managed to gain control of the account, though whether it was through negotiation with the faker or through brute force on the part of Twitter administrators is not known.

It's good to see more high profile members of society joining and taking advantage of Twitter. We're waiting for the fake Biggie profile to force the Notorious B.I.G. to reveal he's still alive and well. [From: VatorNews and Mashable]

Britney Spears (and Other Celebs) Get on Twitter Bandwagon

Well, if you were still doubting whether or not Twitter was going to go mainstream and start drawing in the MySpace and Facebook crowd, you can doubt no more: Britney Spears is now part of the Twitter community.

Britney and friends launched a Twitter account and a new blog to keep the celebrity-obsessed public satiated. Granted, the Twitter account lacks any quips directly from the pop star and the only words straight from the artists mouth on the blog are heavily scripted videos, but the illusion of interaction is there.

Oddly enough, the site lacks any actual music from Britney outside of a link to the artist on Amazon and a link to buy the new video for 'Womanizer' on iTunes. The real story is the inclusion of the Twitter updates right on the home page, introducing millions of teenage girls to the microblogging service. It's only a matter of time before Twitter is overrun with "OMG"s and emo-girls Tweeting about their boy troubles.

Of course, Britney isn't alone, you can follow these celebrities on Twitter too:

Britney Spears' Jacket Selling for Over $1,400 on eBay

Britney Spears' Jacket
When we were growing up, Wet Seal made inexpensive clothing for the bad girls. At least that's what our sisters told us.

So what happens when bad-girl Britney Spears puts on one of their jackets, and someone else gets his hands on it? It sells for over $1,400 on eBay. The jacket, described as the one she wore while "shopping at Ralph's one evening in LA," still has Britney's "pleasant smell in it and it smells very nice!" As of this posting, it's going for $1,425.00.

The eBay seller promises the jacket's authenticity, as it came from her personal assistant. We're thinking Britney should have a sit-down with these "assistants".

For those of you who can live without the special "scent," you can pick up this jacket from the clearance racks at Wet Seal for about $20. Good luck.

Elderly Amish Man Caught on Film With Prostitute, Blackmailed
When a 75-year-old Amish widower slept with a prostitute, he -- we feel certain -- felt pretty bad about it the next morning. As if that guilt weren't enough for the old man, the prostitute and her boyfriend demanded $67,000 from him, claiming that they had filmed the scene with wall-mounted cameras and would upload the recording to the Internet. The pair was later arrested and, we can only imagine, the Amish man abhorred technology more than ever.

Bank Robber Gets Away With the Help of Craiglist
In October, a bank robber -- wearing a safety vest, blue shirt, face mask and goggles -- eluded police with the help of Craiglist. Just outside the bank, while the robbery was in progress, stood a group of men who were responding to a Craiglist day labor opportunity. As the advertisement required, they were all wearing safety vests, blue shirts, face masks and goggles.

Nude New Zealander Arrested After Responding to Fake Sexy Text Message
Late in 2007, a Wellington, New Zealand man received a racy text message from two anonymous "ladies," giving him only an address and a request that he show up naked. Well, he indeed showed up naked... at the home of one appalled, unsuspecting New Zealander. Both the nude Romeo and the sadistic texter were arrested, though neither were prosecuted.

Fake Craiglist Ad Costs Man Most of What He Owns
Last Spring, a post appeared on an Oregon Craigslist board stating that the owner of a specific house was leaving all of his worldly possessions (still in said house) to whoever wanted them. When homeowner Robert Salisbury rushed home -- on a tip from a woman suspicious about the offer of a free horse -- he found his house being ransacked by 30 strangers. We suggest he take that horse and collect some vengeance Clint Eastwood-style.

When a 17-year-old Dutch boy hacked into several accounts on the Second Life-style site 'Habbo' in 2007, the the law got involved. The boy was discovered to have stolen $5,800 worth of virtual furniture and knick-knacks. Apparently, crime -- whether actual or virtual -- does not pay.

Phishers Going After Your Phones in New 'Vishing' Trend
Over the past year, sneaky spammers have begun to forsake the worn-out territory of e-mail in favor of cell phones' fertile frontier. The result? "Vishing." Get it? Voice mail phishing. It might be more ominous if it didn't sound like a James Bond villain saying, "Wishing."

Burglars Break Into Restaurant, Steal HDTV, Leave Money / Food Behind
Around Halloween of last year, a truckload of thieves drove into -- that's right, into -- a Pennsylvania Mexican restaurant, where they -- apparently uninterested in the cash register -- stole a mid-grade 47-inch HDTV and fled the scene. We've all heard about how this generation is lacking in ambition, but this generation's thieves, too?
