The extent of the damage is still unknown, but people with friends or family in Japan can turn to Google's Person Finder if they're looking for or having information about anyone caught up in the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit last night and this morning. The service is available in Japanese, Chinese and English.

The app was first launched in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake last year. Google has since deployed it to help users find lost friends and loved ones in the wake of the Chile and Christchurch earthquakes. The Japan version is currently logging over 5,100 records. As communications went down in certain parts of the country immediately following the quake, many have taken to the app to search for or post information about those displaced by the disaster. Twitter has also been overrun with tweets from people sharing or searching for information about the quake.
Google Launches Person Finder for Japan Earthquake and Tsunami originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 08:50:00 EST.

Just last week Microsoft showed off the Zune HD at an event in San Francisco, but didn't let anyone shoot video of the thing. Wouldn't you know it; some enterprising souls didn't listen.

Webcycle Brings Pedal-Powered Internet

Upgrading from a slow to fast connection usually takes a call to an Internet provider -- but not with the Webcycle. With this device, users need to work for their downloads, faster pedaling equaling faster speeds.

After a brief period of unofficial officialness yesterday morning, Tesla has rolled out the Model S to a sea of eager photographers. The company's also revealed specs for the EV: this seven-seater can go from 0 to 60 MPH in 5.6 seconds, boasts a top speed of 120 MPH, features a dashboard display and a 17-inch main touchscreen monitor. It's fully 3G capable, sports HD and satellite radio, uses LED and neon exterior lights, smart-key power, and push button gear selector. While that $49,900 base price will get you a battery that's good for 160 miles per charge, 230-mile and 300-mile range packs will be available. On a 220V outlet, the company says it'll charge in four hours with a 45 minute "QuickCharge" option, and you should be able to swap batteries if necessary in under 8 minutes. Excited? Find a way to control yourself, this baby isn't going into production in Q3 2011. Check out a brief glimpse of the interior after the break.
Continue reading Tesla Model S Now Official

Tesla Model S Now Official originally appeared on Switched on Sat, 28 Mar 2009 15:51:00 EST.
When it comes to sussing out info on Guitar Hero IV, we've seen blurry images and scanned pictures, but now Activision is getting all official on us with a Fall release date and complete feature list. So here's what we know: Guitar Hero: World Tour (as it's called) will include a drum kit with cymbals, a new guitar controller, and a microphone.

In terms of game modes, look for a Music Studio music creator that will let you compose, record, edit, and share your own music -- fear that -- and an 8-player "Battle of the Bands" should keep things interesting both on and offline. They're calling it "The Guitar Hero experience reinvented" and we can't argue with that, at least until the game actually comes out in Fall 2008 for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and PS2. Peep the official trailer and Lenny Kravitz ubiquity after the break.
