Gamer Builds Ultimate 'Bioshock' Costume

It's not uncommon for gamers to dress up like characters from their favorite video games. For the less ambitious (or more sane) of us, these declarations of loyalty are tough to understand, although plenty of fun to watch. If you think you've seen it all, think again, folks. Harrison Krix, a prop builder from Atlanta, Georgia, has created one of the most detailed and impressive video game costumes we have yet to, and probably ever will, see.

On his blog, the self-proclaimed dork Krix proudly chronicles the seven-week-long process ("a solid pain in the ass," he says) of building a costume based on the Big Daddy character from the game 'Bioshock.' A Big Daddy looks a lot like a huge, misshapen man wearing one of those old diving suits, except with a giant drill for an arm. Krix drew the blueprints for the costume, which weighs between 50 and 60 pounds, and started constructing the body. Then, he moved on to constructing the head, drill arm (it actually spins!), and dome cage. Finally, he turned to other details like painting.

'BioShock' Video Game to Be Made Into Movie

'Bioshock's Underwater Dystopia Heading to the Silver Screen
Last year, top-notch first-person shooter 'BioShock' dazzled the gaming media with its engaging storyline and incredibly rich environment. It was immediately clear that a sequel was required, and developer Take-Two is currently working on it. Now, the gaming developer has revealed that a Hollywood adaptation is in the works, as well.

Gore Verbinski -- famous for his work on the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films -- has been lined up for directorial duties. The screenwriter for the script has not been finalized, but John Logan, who wrote 'Star Trek: Nemesis' and 'The Aviator' is currently in talks to handle that duty.

It's always hard to know what to expect when talking about a film based on a video game, but it's got to be better than the film adaptation of 'BloodRayne' -- right? [Source: USAToday/Reuters]

'BioShock' May Be the Best Game Ever

BioShock = Best Game Ever?

It came in like a dark horse in the night, slicing through the hype surrounding big-budget titles like 'Halo 3' and 'Rock Band' with a subtle, almost muted pre-release advertising presence. But now, a day away from the official release of 'BioShock' for the Xbox 360 and PC, reviews are rolling in declaring that this might not just be the best game on the Xbox 360 this year, but perhaps the best game of all time.

Review scores consistently place this game as either 100% or damn near perfect, with the lowest review yet seen a very positive 94% from 'Xbox World 360 Magazine'. According to review aggregator GameRankings.com, BioShock has an average score of 99.1%, which is higher than any other game including fan favorites like 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time' and 'Resident Evil 4.'

We were lucky enough to spend some quality time over the weekend with this game and, while we're not going to wade into the arguments surrounding "best game EVAR!" (We'll just put up a poll and let you do that), we are quite happy to report that 'BioShock' deserves every positive review and accolade it receives. It's a seriously great game.

Hands-On With 'BioShock' & New Screens

BioShock
We sat down with Irrational Games' creative director Ken Levine to play some of the upcoming "genetically enhanced" first person shooter 'BioShock'. We left thoroughly impressed. If we had it our way, we'd still be sitting in that dark office playing through the first level. For those waiting for this game as obsessively as we are, there are some potential spoilers below, so read at your own discretion.

'BioShock' takes places in Rapture, a city hidden beneath the ocean. What started as a utopia has turned into an underwater nightmare filled with "Big Daddies," splicers (very angry mutated people), corpses and little girls who loot dead people for DNA. No, we're not making this up.

Levine showed us some of Arcadia, one of the game's later levels in which you are trying to reverse the effects of a tree-killing substance released by the underworld's madman leader. The level is complete chaos -- splicers (the bad guys) are trying to bust down your doors while you're being hounded by your guide to save the trees that supply oxygen to the underwater world.

We were given a chance to play around with some of the game's cooler hacked weapons (you can make your own weapons by combining powers or adding things on to normal ones). Our favorites (names not confirmed) included:

  • Bolt traps: These are like clotheslines that you can place across corridors or doorways and wait for a splicer to walk through, sending her or him into electroshock spasms.
  • Tornadoes: You can places these just about anywhere. These mini storms send enemies flying to the ceiling, stunning them, or, if you happen to place an explosive on the ceiling above the tornado, into a gruesome body parts fireworks display.
  • Enrage stones: These stones glow red and can be thrown at Big Daddies to turn them into temporary allies. For about 15 seconds, an enraged Big Daddie will fire off hundreds of rounds at anyone trying to do you harm.
This game has all the ingredients for a potentially massive hit -- beautiful graphics, forgiving learning curve, simple controls, and about a million ways to make waste of your enemies with hacked weapons and traps. August 21 is the game's release date, and it can't come soon enough. Mature audiences only, though -- sorry, kids.
