Formula Three's 'Green' Race Car Made of Hemp and Recyled Bottles

Don't expect to see it whipping around the world's race tracks just yet, but a new Formula Three car in Northern Ireland is making waves throughout the racing world. Not only can the car reach speeds of 130 mph, but it's made of sustainable materials, too.

According to BBC News, the 'green' vehicle, which researchers say is the world's first sustainable race car, is a result of a collaboration between the University of Warwick's Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre, the University of Ulster, and others. Powered by biodiesel, it's made from environmentally friendly products like hemp, soybean oil, potato starch, and recycled bottles. Researchers didn't sacrifice safety for sustainability, though. The vehicle's "critical parts" are not made from sustainable materials, researcher Dr. Julie Soden told the BBC.

It's clear that researchers don't intend to keep this car in a lab; they want to see it used on the track. As evidence, A1 Grand Prix champion driver Adam Carroll recently took it for a spin. It'd be quite the feat if, one day, researchers could make this 'green' car a viable option for competitive drivers. Let's just hope the design doesn't make it into the mainstream; you know all those hippies would just try to smoke it. [From: BBC News]

Neil Young Debuts Video Shot Entirely in His New Green Car

Throughout his career, musician Neil Young has earned a well deserved, blue-collar reputation as a voice for the common man and the oppressed, speaking out against governmental and corporate greed and corruption. With his new 'Johnny Magic' music video, filmed entirely inside the experimental 'LincVolt' automobile, Young seeks to honor "people and heroes and change" that represent "Life in America," according to his statement at The Huffington Post.

The rocker based 'Johnny Magic' on John Goodwin, who is identified in the song as the "motorhead messiah" of Wichita, Kansas. Goodwin, a mechanic, turned Young's 1959 Lincoln Continental Mark IV convertible into a biodiesel-fueled, electrical hybrid, "heavy metal Continental" that gets 100 miles to the gallon, and, based on the lyrics, travels in a "blaze of silence."

With the project, Young aims to provide an affordable, environmentally friendly car that will
inspire the automotive giants of Detroit to adapt to global warming issues, as well as assuage financial worries during a period when, as he says during the song, "the whole world started running out of money." Well, we're hoping the magic men can do the same conversion for our classic '70 Gremlin, and on the cheap. But only because of unselfish ecological concerns. We promise. Besides, 'GremVolt' has a nice ring to it. [From: The Huffington Post Via: autobloggreen]

Hot New Sports Car Tops 200 MPH, Has 2,000 Mile Range

There are sports cars and then there are COOLEST CARS EVER MADE. This hellion falls with a resounding thud into the latter group.

The Trident Iceni is capable of topping 200 mph. This alone ensures its entrance into the world of elite roadsters. It is also able, however, to drive 2,000 miles on a single tank of pure bio-diesel. We'll be honest -- we're getting a bit hot-under-the-collar.

Creator Phil Bevan, of Trident Performance Vehicles, utilized "torque multiplication," a technology that uses less fuel and produces less emissions by keeping revs low. The car is made out of composite material that will never corrode or rust, and the chassis itself is made out of stainless steel. It's an eco-friendly Lamborghini, except better looking and faster. Hell Yeah!

At around $150,000, the Iceni is a literal steal, but you should hurry. Only 500 are being made, and production begins next year. [From: DailyMail]

Diesel Honda Accord Will Get 63 MPG

Diesel Accord Gets 63 MPG

Diesel fuel isn't really known for being an environmentalist's dream. Generally, when Americans think about diesel, they think of big trucks spewing black and noxious smoke into the air. But advances in fuel technology have reduced diesel emissions in recent years. As a result, diesel-powered vehicles are poised to make a resurgence in the American market after decades of being ignored.

Case in point: Honda has developed a diesel-powered Accord it hopes to sell in the United States in the year 2010. The new hyper-efficient, low-emissions Accord gets just shy of 63 miles to the gallon (62.8 to be exact), with out utilizing a power-sacrificing electric hybrid engine.

Using Biodiesel would make the new Accord an even greener choice than the Prius, but still much less stylish.
