Meet the Trons, an all-Robot Rock Band

We'll admit, we reckoned we were coming along alright with our bar chords, but now we're teetering on the edge of just giving up. Yeah, we've seen robotic mechanisms programmed to make meaningful sounds before, but The Trons are a bona fide band, man. We hear they're going on tour as well -- talk about a guaranteed sell out. Totally killer Sister Robot video after the jump. [Source: YouTube]

Musician Replaces Bandmates With Robots

Though you may not have ever heard of Jay Vance or his band Captured! By Robots, you definitely want to check them out on tour this fall just to see the spectacle. Day jobs, drugs and egos are a band's worst enemy, and Jay had enough. So, in 1997 he began constructing his army of back up bots.

The 'band' is constructed with scrap metal and controlled by Vance via a system of pulleys and pneumatic actuators. The robots curse like sailors and bang out metal and punk tunes as Vance screams out lyrics about working out, driving and the 10 Commandments. The tunes sound like everything from Metallica and Devo to Black Flag and Journey (as in the above video), but the real sell is the craftiness of Vance, AKA JBOT.

Check out the Wired article for some more video and visit the band's official website for downloadable MP3s.

The Switched Questionnaire: The Exies

If there's one thing the musician loves more than some good old-fashioned debauchery, it's his gadgets. So, on the very day his band's new album, 'A Modern Way of Living with the Truth,' hits store shelves, we're chatting with Freddy Herrera of L.A.-based rock outfit The Exies to get the lowdown on his favorite toys.

What gadgets do you always bring with you on the road?
Well, it seems that all of us, except Hoss, are never without our laptops. We do everything on them, whether that's e-mailing, updating our site or writing music. And, we've gotta have our cell phones.

What cell phone do you have right now and what do you love/hate about it?
We all have RAZRs except Chris. He has a MOTOKRZR, which is pretty close. No complaints -- except when we're on the bus trying to sleep and somebody gets a call, which is every damn night.

Where do you go pretty much every time you get online?
We're always are on our site, the-exies.com, or our MySpace page. Chris likes to check out NME.com for all the latest music news from London, too.

What annoys you most about your iPod, cell phone or laptop (or all three)?

The battery charge on all of them doesn't last long enough!

What's the most-played song or artist on your iPod?
The Exies.

What upcoming gadget can you not wait to get your hands on?
The iPhone looks pretty cool. So if anyone from Apple reads this, send us one!

You're stranded on a desert island: What gadget do you bring?
An ultra high-powered cell phone!

What's the longest time you've ever spent playing a video game in one sitting and what game was it?
About 20 minutes, and it was 'Guitar Hero' to see if we could play our song 'Hey You' on it. We sucked.
