Hertz Vs. Avis (GPS Road Test)

If you ever rent vehicles while traveling, you know that you can tack on an additional $10 a day or so for an optional GPS unit that gives you turn-by-turn directions. Most rental car companies are beginning to feature this option, but the Big Two -- Hertz and Avis -- offer it in almost all of their locations. Not surprisingly, the GPS offerings by Hertz and Avis are different. Which is better? To find out, we test drove the GPS navigators of Hertz and Avis. Check out our findings in the above video.

Wi-Fi While You Drive

Avis's tag phrase is "We try harder." If the rental car company's latest promotional deal is any indication, it looks like you may have to try harder, too -- to keep your eyes on the road, that is. The rental car company just launched program that lets renters get an in-car Wi-Fi system installed for just $10.95 a day, turning the typically mild-mannered and neutral-colored rented auto into a mild-mannered and neutral-colored mobile hotspot. The idea isn't that you actually have your laptop open and surf the 'Net while you're cruising the highway (we hope), but instead to ensure that either your passengers, or business drivers parked somewhere, will have a place to connect. Mobile hotspots tend to use cell carrier 3G networks, which enables near-broadband speeds anywhere there's cell phone reception.

The $11-a-day price may seem like a lot compared to some other public Wi-Fi sources, but it's quite comparable to the daily fees charged by most hotspots at places like Starbucks and hotels. Of course, that coffee shop Wi-Fi connection isn't going to follow you to your next appointment. The service will be available Monday starting at San Francisco's SFO and will be rolling out to SJC (San Jose), LAX (Los Angeles), and EWR (Newark) in the next few weeks.
