Andy Roddick and Serena Williams Take Tennis To Twitter

Tennis star Andy Roddick, known for having the fastest serve in the world, has been showing his game off the court, too, via Twitter.

Since tennis stars are unhindered by team owners, head coaches and the like, Twitter is running rampant on and off the court, according to The New York Times. Roddick might not be the sport's darling he once was, but he's certainly tennis' tweeting phenom -- microblogging himself into a friendly derriere competition with Serena Williams and making bathroom humor with Justin Gimelstob. For his part, Gimelstob has proved Twitter-savvy, too. While players aren't allowed to have cell phones on the court, Gimelstob bypassed the rules during the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships by handing notes to a ball girl who would then run them to a friend that tweeted the messages.

ESPN Regulating Facebook, Twitter Usage of Employees

Lately, it seems like everyone is putting the clamps down on Twitter and other social networking sites, so it's only natural that ESPN, the Big Brother of sports broadcasting, is the next in line.

The New York Times reports that ESPN issued 12 social networking guidelines to its employees Tuesday. Now, on-air talent, writers, and reporters are not allowed to have a sports-related Web site or blog. In addition, they'll need approval from a supervisor to even talk about sports on any social networking site. Is ESPN really that power hungry? Apparently so; if an employee disobeys, he can be suspended or fired.

NFL Flirts With Twitter Ban

Twitter is creating a whole new crop of sports journalists. They're on the field and the sideline, in the locker room and team meetings. They don't need a firsthand account, because this type of reporter is actually wearing the uniform. Needless to say, coaches and team executives aren't too pleased with the trend.

While the NFL doesn't presently have a policy on the use of social media sites, officials did tell The New York Times they are working on one, hoping to ban their use during game days. However, many individual coaches are taking the matter into their own hands and instituting rules this season. Sure, fans love to read tweets from players on their favorite team, but in a league where every bit of information is more closely guarded than the Hope Diamond, coaches are trying to grab Twitter before it breaks away like a running back headed for the end zone. Miami Dolphins nose tackle Jason Ferguson told the Times that head coach Tony Sparano banned Twitter because it could potentially reveal sensitive information to media outlets and might become a distraction to the team.

NFL Unleashes Its Banal Fury on Twitter

The NFL is apparently trying to maintain its reputation as the "No Fun League," and the current object of the staid organization's grumpy wrath is a familiar suspect. Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco (né Johnson) recently proclaimed to Houston's KGOW Radio that he intended to use "Twitter during games, during halftime, and after the games" so that he "can really make it fun," according to The Sporting News.

Hearing the dreaded "f" word, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told ProFootballTalk.com that the league will not permit in-game twittering by anyone on the sidelines. That's right. Eliminating player-fan interaction, end zone celebrations, and creative Sharpie demonstrations really makes the game more entertaining, Greg. Maybe you can just go ahead and get rid of that crazy forward pass, too.

The next organization to unreasonably place restrictions on Twitter and other social networks? Probably not the comparatively lighthearted NBA (which fined several high-profile Twitterers last season but didn't implement a ban). But, we think the old-fashioned and outdated NCAA would be an excellent bet. [From: The Sporting News]

St. Louis Cardinals Manager Tony La Russa Calls Foul on Twitter

St. Louis Cardinals' manager Tony La Russa has called, "You're out!" to Twitter. According to FOX News, the future hall-of-fame baseball manager filed suit last month against the microblogging site.

La Russa, who is seeking an unspecified amount in damages, claims a fake Twitter account set up in his name featured "derogatory and demeaning" comments that caused him emotional distress and injured his reputation. The most troubling tweets concern two former Cardinals pitchers -- unnamed in the article -- who have both died in the last few years. While the account is no longer active, pages from the lawsuit show a screenshot with a picture of La Russa and a heading that reads, "Hey there! Tony La Russa is using Twitter."
