Proposed Twitter Reality Show Scaring Off Celebrity Twitterers?

Twitter's agreement to appear in a future reality show may cost the microblogging site its most popular celebrity advocate. News of Twitter's partnership with Reveille and Brillstein Entertainment groups was met with instant consternation from the Ashton Kutcher clan, including his wife Demi Moore. Both threatened to take a tweeting time-out, which would surely devastate Kutcher's Twitter-leading, 2 million-strong cult of tweetees.

Kutcher believes the proposed show, which would "put ordinary people on the trail of celebrities," would be a sell-out and would also lead to celebrity stalking. (What, Martha Stewart tweeting wasn't a sufficient sell-out warning?) Twitter co-founder Biz Stone countered with "Twitter's open approach might have the power to transform television." Yeah, but what will we all do without Ashton's enthralling, slice-of-life gems (like, "on lunch break")? We guess we'll have to be content reading White House updates on the new Supreme Court nominee, viewing playoff highlights courtesy of the NBA, and enjoying the comedic tweeting genius of Rainn Wilson, aka The Office's Dwight. Ashton Kutcher Pranks CNN Over Twitter Triumph

After beating the cable news channel in a race to one-million Twitter followers last month, celebrity tweeter-extraordinaire Ashton Kutcher harkened back to his 'Punk'd' days on Wednesday, making good on his promise to prank the losing CNN. Kutcher unfurled a banner with his Twitter name, "@aplusk" across the CNN logo at the company's downtown Atlanta headquarters.

Accompanied by a film crew that was broadcasting the event live on the Internet, Kutcher and his band of followers met in Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park. During the race with CNN, Kutcher had also promised to "ding-dong-ditch" founder Ted Turner's house, but because the billionaire lacks easily-accessible doorbells, the former star of 'That '70s Show' and his "tweeps" (Kutcher-slang for Twitter peeps) settled for leaving 800 boxes of Ding Dong snack cakes in front of a Ted's Montana Grill (the restaurant chain owned by the media mogul).

Kutcher challenged CNN to a Twitter popularity contest back in April to see which user could make history by reaching one million followers on the micro-blogging site. The race came down to the wire, but Kutcher was victorious, proving that celebrity gossip and Demi Moore trumps world news and Anderson Cooper any day. [From: CNN]

Oprah Tweets on TV (Thanks, Ashton!)

Earlier today, we wrote about a monumental turning point in Twitter's history. No, the site hasn't been purged of its chronic downtime (fail whale), and obnoxious "social networking media marketing mavens" haven't been banished; instead, the All-Powerful Oprah began tweeting (@oprah).

The day-time hostess announced yesterday via Facebook that she would begin using the microblogging site today. On schedule, Oprah made her Twitter-debut with:

HI TWITTERS . THANK YOU FOR A WARM WELCOME. FEELING REALLY 21st CENTURY .

Great. Fortunately, the all caps were toned down in the afternoon's later tweets, and Oprah -- we hope she doesn't have a ghost-writer -- even showed off the knowledge of a Twitter regular by sending an @reply to Demi Moore. Not too shabby for a beginner. We're not seeing too much of interest from the great daytime oracle, despite drawing in 163,412 followers (as of writing). While her follower count may be significantly lower than that of today's guest, Twitter King Ashton Kutcher, we're sure Oprah and her followers would thrash Ashton and CNN in a Twitter war. Oprah to Tweet on TV Today (Say That 10 Times Fast)

Yesterday, at approximately 2:10 p.m. EST, Oprah Winfrey announced her entry into Twitter society via a post on her Facebook page. Less than two hours later, she already had upwards of 33,000 Twitter followers.

According to TechCrunch, Oprah will welcome Ashton "King of Twitter" Kutcher to today's show, from whence she will emit her very first tweet. Apparently, Kutcher has pledged to donate $100,000 to fight malaria in Africa, but only if he can amass one million Twitter followers before CNN does (which he did around 2 a.m. this morning, becoming the first user ever to reach one million followers). For our part, we can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want to hear the former sitcom star talk about his "wifey," as opposed to reading a respected news source's discussion of world-changing events, but the whole malaria-fighting thing can't hurt.

Regardless, TechCrunch predicts a mammoth boom in Twitter users as a result of Oprah's show tomorrow, and we won't argue. If Oprah can convince the world that some dude's a genius, and months later convince it that the same guy is a total douche, she can certainly get a few thousand people to join an already fashionable social network. We're just glad that she is still using her superhuman powers of persuasion for good, and not evil. [From: TechCrunch]

Twitter Is Your Backstage Pass to the Oscars, and Beyond

Twitter is Your Backstage Pass

If you're like most movie fans, you spent your Sunday night glued to the television watching award after award get handed out between endless strings of montages. But, a growing number of online fans used the social service Twitter to get a glimpse behind the scenes, thanks to a number of celebrity tweeters.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore (known as Mr. and Mrs. Kutcher to Twitter fans) were some of the most prolific Twitter users at the Oscars, providing almost constant textual updates during the show itself. Highlights included Demi's saying "So excited my pal Penelope won!!!" and Ashton's posting a number of pictures and even one grainy video of after-show parties. But they're certainly not the only tweeters in celeb-land. As we've said in the past, everyone from Britney Spears to Barack Obama are posting their hearts out, giving fans quick updates on what's going on as it happens. So who needs shady celebrity tracking blogs and magazines when you can get the quick and dirty straight from the horses' mouths? [From: The New York Times]

Ashton Kutcher Launches Gossip Blog

Ashton Kutcher Launches Gossip Blog
Not content to just make terrible films and older women, Ashton Kutcher is getting into the gossip market with a new blog called Blahgirls. The site offers a relatively light-hearted take on traditional celebrity gossip, lacking the nastiness of bloggers like Perez Hilton and the infuriating stalking of print outlets like US Weekly.

The blog is "written" by three animated teenage girls (that look like scraps from the South Park cutting room floor), who also star in short video posts in which they discuss celebrity news and gossip in a ridiculous caricature of what 13-year-old girls sound like.

What makes the site interesting, however, is that comments and e-mails from readers are replied to by the characters: Britney, Krystle, and Tiffany. Many of the responses come not from ghost writers or blog staff, but from an automated chat bot that generates replies and posts them without any input from a person. Believable artificial intelligence of this type is notoriously hard to implement, but as more and more custom responses are generated by the development team, the bot will become more... human, or at least that's what Kutcher hopes, according to an interview he conducted with the New York Times earlier this week.

People want their celebrity gossip, we guess. We're just glad you'll never see these newest members of the paparazzi chasing Britney Spears to her car. [From: NY Times and Blahgirls]
