North Korea Home to Lamest Arcade in the World

Under the leadership of ruler Kim Jong Il, the totalitarian state of North Korea has been notoriously isolated and secretive. It's incredibly difficult to obtain information or photographs from within the nation, but an anonymous freedom fighter has apparently released some incriminating photographs that demonstrate a disturbingly cruel attitude toward North Korea's youth.

The photos depict a depressingly sterile, outdated, and lonely video game arcade. The room, which looks like a lounge in a psychiatric hospital, has no invigorating neon lights, strobes, bells, or whistles. Most of the games also appear to be at least a decade old, but the knockoff of the classic Midway submarine game 'Sea Raider,' complete with periscope, does look like it might be entertaining, if it's operational.

Spock Actor Zach Quinto Wants to Save Arcades

Spock portrayer Zachary Quinto (the adorable reason that girls everywhere enjoyed the new 'Star Trek' movie) recently endeared himself even more to his geek fan base. Joystick in hand, Quinto has decided to support 'Save the Arcade,' a campaign promoted by Stride Gum to keep iconic gamespots across the country from having to shut their doors.

Quinto appeared at the Video West Arcade in Glendale, California to schmooze with employees and gamers, playing the classic games himself. 'Save the Arcade' lets gamers play online games, their points going to their choice of one of four arcades. At the end of the contest, the arcade with the highest score gets $25,000 to cover costs.

Working Stiff Builds 1980s-Style Arcade On the Side

Oh no he didn't. Oh yes he did.

After two years of tracking down, buying, and restoring old arcade games, Linden, Virginia resident Peter Hirschberg has opened his own private Luna Arcade next door to his home. The collection is up to 65 games at the moment, with another three on the way.

Hirschberg's days are spent working for AOL (Switched's parent company, FYI), and many a night recently was spent designing computer animation for a 2007 documentary called Chasing Ghosts, about classic arcades.

And yet somehow, amidst all of this, Hirschberg was able to put together one of the sweetest arcades east of the Mississippi. It's full of blacklights, classic '80s movie posters, and a blacklight-compatible, space-themed carpet. And the soundtrack is straight '80s rock.

"This is what heaven looks like," Hirschberg told the Washington Post at the arcade's unofficial grand opening.

Looking at the pictures -- we don't necessarily disagree.
