Dad Builds Mini-Arcade for Son, Earns Cool Points

In order to be a real dad, a man should be able to build something from scratch for his son. While most fathers build something lame and useless, like a wooden race car, Samuel Seide decided to make something his son would actually enjoy and use. With his miniature, made-from-scratch arcade machine, the boy is sure to be the envy of all the neighborhood kids.

Judging by the video, Seide doesn't have a future in comedy, but the guy sure can whip up one cool homemade toy -- even if he, himself, isn't very hip. (The guy has a high score on his son's game.) He connected a portable DVD player's screen to a plug-and-play video game unit that features 12 classic games, including 'Galaga' and 'Pac-Man.' Seide stuck both parts inside a hand-built wooden cabinet that features 'Pac-Man' decals on the sides. If only our dear old Dads would've had the same passion for arcade games that they had for woodworking... [From: Gizmodo, via CNET News]

'Pac Man' Chair Lets Gamers Kick Back in Retro Style

Gamers, capable of epic button-mashing binges known to go on for hours, need that perfect place to park their butts. Ask any geek what the most important part of any good video game lair is, and they'll say it's the chair. A lounger needs to be stylish (so you can impress your friends who come over to play 'Halo 3'), and comfortable (so you're cheeks won't go numb during that last-minute drive on 'Madden NFL 10'). When it comes to gamers, a little nostalgia never hurts, too.

Spock Actor Zach Quinto Wants to Save Arcades

Spock portrayer Zachary Quinto (the adorable reason that girls everywhere enjoyed the new 'Star Trek' movie) recently endeared himself even more to his geek fan base. Joystick in hand, Quinto has decided to support 'Save the Arcade,' a campaign promoted by Stride Gum to keep iconic gamespots across the country from having to shut their doors.

Quinto appeared at the Video West Arcade in Glendale, California to schmooze with employees and gamers, playing the classic games himself. 'Save the Arcade' lets gamers play online games, their points going to their choice of one of four arcades. At the end of the contest, the arcade with the highest score gets $25,000 to cover costs.

'Arkeg' Cabinet Perfects Arcades and Ale

It's a combination that surely could only come from the hand of God: beer and arcade games. No, this isn't a joke or a dream. Someone really has created this heavenly contraption.

According to Uncrate, the Arkeg Drink n Game is an arcade cabinet that holds a five-gallon keg and comes with 69 classic arcade games -- from 'Asteroids' to 'Mortal Kombat II.' (This Internet- and iPod-ready machine can handle thousands of additional games.) It's like Budweiser and Ms. Pac Man had a baby. As if it couldn't get any better, the cabinet also features a 24-inch screen, a 2.1 sound system, two joysticks, and a trackball. Sure, $4,000 for the Arkeg may be high, but this is one gaming system that no beer-swilling gamer will regret buying.

Police Find 172 Pounds of Pot Hidden in Video Game Arcade Cabinet

Police in Nevada recently found a lot more than a bunch of quarters inside an intercepted arcade cabinet. In a move many gamers could appreciate, Las Vegas resident Kevin Dixon decided that stuffing a bunch of marijuana inside an arcade cabinet would be the perfect way to smuggle it between Arizona and Illinois. Unfortunately for him, there's no restart button or 1-UP in real life.

According to the Daily Herald, Palatine, Illinois police found 172 pounds of marijuana, worth about $175,000, inside the cabinet that was delivered to a parking lot. Shortly after the discovery, police arrested Dixon and charged him with unlawful cannabis trafficking, unlawful possession of cannabis, and unlawful possession with intent to deliver. On Wednesday, his bond was set at $250,000, which sources said cannot be paid for with arcade tickets.

Police told the Daily Herald that they're not sure yet what Dixon intended to do with all that pot. Seems like there's only one logical answer: smoke it with his friends and see who can get the 'highest' score on the unidentified game. Instead, looks like Dixon will be sharing a cell with Blinky, Inky, Pinky, and Clyde of 'Pac-Man' fame. [From the Daily Herald, via Joystiq]

Another Kid Climbs Into and Out of Arcade Claw Machine (Video)

We've watched the video... a hundred times. We've found plenty of other instances where some stupid child managed to accomplish the same task, and yet we still can't figure out how on Earth these little rug-rats get inside the machines! This is not a trick of the camera, this is actual security footage of a small child climbing into, and then back out of, one of those claw machines that has eaten up so many of our quarters.

The scary part is that this seems to happen all the time. You'd think someone would have addressed whatever design flaw is allowing this to happen by now.

Now we know next time we take a date to the boardwalk how to guarantee we win our sweet-heart a prize. Hopefully our child-for-hire does get stuck like this poor kid. [Source: Boing Boing]

Microsoft Offers Free Game for Xbox LIve Downtime

Microsoft Offers Free Game to Shafted Live GamersOver the last few weeks, Microsoft's Xbox Live service was suffering from a number of problems that prevented gamers from signing on or joining in games with their buddies. Those problems were rectified earlier this week (and then the service went down again).

Microsoft is coming out and not only explaining what caused the prolonged outage, but is taking the extra step of offering a free game as an apology.

Microsoft's Xbox Live General Manager Marc Whitten indicated that during those weeks, Xbox Live experienced the biggest period of growth in its five year history. The service, flush with new subscribers trying out their new holiday Xbox 360s, got a little bogged down and couldn't quite handle the traffic.

Marc didn't specify that only Gold subscribers would be receiving the free Xbox Live Arcade game, so it looks like it'll be made available to even Silver members who don't pay the monthly fee. The only questions now are which game and when, answers we should have in the next few weeks.

Amazon Slips, Leaks the New Xbox 360

Amazon Slips, Leaks the New Xbox 360

This week is all about retail stores stealing the thunder of big gaming companies. Yesterday it was a new PS3 model leaked by Best Buy before Sony had a chance to announce it. Now we have word of a new Xbox 360 model being leaked by Amazon.com and confirmed by Toys 'R' Us. The new model is a replacement for the cheapest 360 version, the cut-rate Core system that shipped with a wired controller and without a hard drive. It was Microsoft's play to the budget-conscious gamer, though it's never really found much success despite its low price of $299.

This new bundle will be called the Arcade system, named to match the console's popular Xbox Live Arcade service, which features hundreds of new and retro games for download, most for $10 or less. It's expected that the new version will include the convenience of an HDMI port (one cable for video and sound) first found only on the Elite Xbox 360 but later included on other models. Also, the package will apparently include five free Arcade downloads. But, beyond that, and a price of $279.99, it's unknown what else will be included in the box -- though we wouldn't be surprised if the controller loses its umbilical cord.

(Check out how the new system fits into the existing lineup of 360 consoles.)

After Causing Injuries, Japanese Arm-Wrestling Game Is Recalled

Japanese Arm Wrestling Game RecalledFor professional arm wrestlers, broken arms are a risk of the trade. When you get two big guys pushing like crazy in the opposite direction, injuries are bound to happen from time to time. Now, when you're playing an arm-wrestling game in an arcade in Japan, you probably wouldn't expect to be subject to the same risks. But serious pain is exactly what came out of a Japanese arcade, where three Japanese gamers' arms were broken while playing a game called 'Arm Spirit' by Atlus. As you can see from the picture, the arm-wrestling game involves a robotic plastic arm that apparently went all Popeye on the trio.

Details are sparse at this point, except that Atlus has recalled all 150 arcade cabinets of the game to prevent any further injury. All we can say is we hope this doesn't become a trend, lest some of the other rather more, uh, creative games in Japan start getting recalled as well.

America's Army (Game) Comes to the Arcade

America's Army (Game) Visits the ArcadeIn what many thought was a huge waste of taxpayer money, the U.S. Army in 2002 released its own video game called 'America's Army.' It was PC-exclusive at first and enabled gamers to get a taste of the Army lifestyle ... an extremely limited and action-packed taste, but a taste nonetheless.

Now, gamers will be able to get an even more limited (and, presumably, even more action-packed) look at the life of an American soldier at arcades around the U.S., thanks to a new arcade version of the game.

The idea behind the original was that the millions spent developing the game would drive better recruitment than, say, a 30-second prime-time TV commercial. After a few million downloads and rave reviews for the free game, the Army brass behind the idea were proven right when they met recruitment goals for 2003 and 2004 (with nearly 20 percent of new Army recruits saying they had played the game).

Unlike the PC download, the arcade version of the game will not be free and will cost 50-cents a pop. Since it looks like the arcade America's Army will be a light-gun game (something like 'House of the Dead' or 'Time Crisis'), it's a little unclear whether any vaguely realistic military tactics or strategy will come in to play.

Here's hoping that at least one of the two quarters you'll need to pump into the box goes toward paying down the war debt.
