Apple turned a lot of heads this morning when it unexpectedly opened the App Store to apps created with third-party development programs -- including, apparently, those using Adobe Flash. In a news release posted on its site, Apple declared that it would be "relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting apps do not download any code." The ...

Apple may still refuse to admit that its iPhone 4 is plagued with design flaws, but Consumer Reports certainly won't. In a recent blog post, the company's testers confirmed that the signal problems many have noticed with the new iPhone are, indeed, the result of faulty design. After testing different phones in a so-called "radio frequency isolation chamber," engineers noticed that when they ...

AT&T just can't catch a break. For quite some time, the company has been a media whipping boy due to its lackluster service in cities like San Francisco and New York. At one time, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was a die-hard BlackBerry devotee. But when his little piggies started hurting from pounding the crap out of the device, he decided to switch to the iPhone. And he's still not happy.

(Apple kicked off pre-orders early this morning, shortly after midnight). ...

Daring heists of Apple gadgets occur so frequently, and with such violent gusto, that rather ordinary robberies seem incredibly mundane by comparison. An assault on an Oregon AT&T store, and the plundering of its iPhones, has made headlines for one highly uncharacteristic occurrence, though. The twist in this frantic tale involves an arrest, but the captured perp wasn't even one of the ...

AT&T made some significant changes to to its early termination fees (ETF) this weekend. The good news: if you buy "basic and quick messaging" phones, the ETF has been lowered to $150. And that fee will be reduced by $4 every month for the life of your contract -- a price drop of $25 over the term of a two-year contract. It may not be a huge discount, but it's a welcome one.
Now, the bad ...

It's hard to call two incidents of some occurrence around the world a trend, but, when those incidents both involve an electrical device catching fire spontaneously, it creates a situation that's hard to ignore -- especially when that device is the iPhone. On Saturday, Italian blogger Tim Colbourne was charging his 3G handset and, after three hours, it sparked and caught fire at the base.

Anyone who spent their childhood playing on one of Nintendo's original GameBoy portable devices has that system's iconic pea-green colored screen permanently etched into their mind. It may have been ugly and low-contrast, but it is also a legend in the portable electronics world. Now, another pocketable icon has been updated to bring back shades of Nintendo's first handheld wunderconsole: A ...

If you missed last night's spankin' new Apple iPhone TV ads, you missed the first detailed glimpse of it in action, plus confirmation of the release date: June 29. This is a few weeks later than earlier speculation of a June 11 release, but these new previews of the phone and its capabilities make a somewhat acceptable consolation prize. They show off a slick and responsive interface (what ...
