iBone Chew Toy Gives Sneak Peek at Dog-Centric App Store

We're going out on a limb here and assuming that the Haute Diggity Dog iBone comes jailbroken and ready to rock, or at least that's the impression we get from checking out that heretofore unseen bevy of icons. Customized for the "tech savvy dog on the go," this here iPhone chew toy gives dear Fido access to bark / hand-shake training, posture lessons, Washington Huskies sports updates (it's the Clemson Tigers in all honesty, but work with us here), a mysterious fitness app and a bone application for times when supper just seems too far away. You know your pup's worth the $11.95, you just know it.

Russian PM Tracking His Dog Via Satellite

Just under a year ago, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced his hopes that one day he could pinpoint the location of his black Labrador, Koni, at any time of the day. Today, a dream has been realized. Mr. Putin has finally procured a satellite collar that will enable him to track the lab regardless of which of the eleven times zones she may be in while waltzing through Russia. Once the collar was slipped on, Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov immediately said "she looks sad, her free life is over." Putin didn't miss a beat when snapping back: "In Soviet Russia, GLONASS track you!"

Pigeon Taught to Play iPhone Video Game (Video)

It's hard to say if the pigeon you see above actually understood what he / she was doing, but apparently these birds can be taught to at least play App Store games in a very poor manner. The creature's owner does note that Mr. Pigeon was pretty awful at racking up high scores on Tap Tap Revenge, but the important thing to realize here is that pigeon pecks do register as presses on the screen. Now that this is all out in the open, we fully expect a follow-up video next week of someone teaching their bird to dial a number on command. Vid's after the break.

Baby Seal Sends Text Messages to Scientists

Seal Sends Text Messages to Scientists
The Society for the Study and Protection of the Mediterranean Seal (what a mouthful), or MOm, have fitted a baby monk seal with a cellular transmitter that will keep them updated via text message. After the seal was rescued in rough seas only a few hours after being born, MOm nursed the adorable creature back to health and trained it to survive on its own.

Before setting the newly feral seal free, researchers strapped it with a transmitter that will relay the seal's position, depth, times spent in and out of the water, and swimming speed all via standard SMS messages. Thankfully for the researchers, the whole thing is automated.

The seal might have trouble banging out "I'm on the island of Rhodes" with those tiny little flippers.

Friday YouTube Fix: Woman Taunts Polar Bear

YouTube ... ain't it grand? Without its endless, ever-expanding library of videos from around the globe, we'd have to live in Japan in order to to watch a female game show contestant tease a captive polar bear -- in a seal costume. Why didn't they ever do stuff like this on 'Fear Factor'?

Gadget Silences Noisy Neighborhood Dogs

Does your neighbor's dog bark incessantly all day and night, or worse, tell you to kill? Put down the arsenic-laced Scooby snacks and instead pick up Bark Free, a nifty little gadget that silences the sound of a dog barking from 30, 50 or 60 feet away depending on the model. When Fido barks, Bark Free flips on and emits ultrasonic sound waves, which are undetectable to the human ear. When the barking stops, the sound is switched off. Though not harmful to the perpetrating pooch, the ultrasonic sound is rather unpleasant for him and he quickly learns not to bark in the vicinity of your yard. Prices range from $70 to $120.

Man, cats are gonna have a field day with this one.

Fido's Dog Tag Goes High Tech

An LCD for FidoIs that engraved, dog bone-shaped tag dangling from your pooch's collar a little too low-tech for ya? You're not alone. A company called eTags has developed a more high-tech option dubbed the Dog-e-Tag. It's a $30-$40 electronic tag that includes a four-line LCD screen that you can program with your pet's name and your phone number. But, with up to 40 lines of information available to scroll through, you can also stack it up with your street address, e-mail, any medical problems your pet has and whatever else you feel like punching in ... your pooch's preference for Evian, perhaps? The tag is water-proof, shock-proof, cold-proof, and comes in six different colors. Battery life is rated at two years and, when it dies, you can pop in a new battery on your own. Take that iPhone!

Instead of TiVo-ing a few episodes of Discovery's 'Planet Earth' series and calling yourself a nature lover, get out there and experience it for yourself! Enhance your live-action viewing pleasure with the diminutive Makroskop MS 82x5 from MINOX, which pulls double duty as both a telescope and microscope. In telescope mode, the $230 water-proof handheld wonder boasts a field of view of 375 feet. With just a turn of the lens, the unit becomes a microscope capable of 8X magnification.

When zookeepers eventually chase you out of the monkey cage, rest assured that the scope's rugged, rubberized exterior will protect it from damage should you drop it while running.
