Global PC Sales Increase 15 Percent in 2008
Tech industry research firm Gartner has has just released its latest figures tracking the computer market, and, refreshingly, the news is good! While the rest of the economy is struggling just to avoid drowning in a sea of stagnant credit, the PC industry is soaring. According to the findings, global PC sales grew 15% since the 3rd quarter of last year.

There are a number of other interesting statistics:
  • Despite a significant increase in sales, Dell's market share still shrank.
  • Asus and Acer, companies that jumped on the netbook trend, saw huge growth.
  • HP maintained its spot as the number one computer manufacturer worldwide.
  • U.S. PC shipments grew only 4.6%.
  • Netbooks accounted for 5% of PC sales
Why exactly the PC industry seems immune to the current economic downturn is not known -- maybe everyone's staying home to watch their free music and free TV shows? -- but we're sure Apple and Dell aren't complaining. [From: Gartner.com]

First pics of Acer's 'Aspire One,' a New Mini Laptop

Whoa, big day in the land of low-cost ultra-portables. First Dell, now Acer in what appear to be the first shots of Acer's first sub-$500 ultra-portable. The images above were dumped into the forum over at UMPC Portal and show what appears to be an "Aspire One" branding to the right of the touchpad and what could certainly pass as the rumored 8.9-inch display. And although that UI is very un-Microsoft, there's no denying the Microsoft flag waving back from the keyboard. We'll know for sure if this is Acer's contestant in the race to the bottom next week at Computex. [Source: UMPC Portal]

Acer's Aspire Predator Gaming PC Gets Previewed

Look out, Alienware -- your fancy new Area-51 ALX has a carnivore hot on its trail. The Acer Aspire Predator, which was officially unveiled yesterday, has already found its way into the loving arms of Bit-Tech. Over there, folks were able to spend a good bit of time with the rig, snap a smattering of photos and dish out some initial impressions. There's some pretty interesting tidbits to be had (for example, every single part possesses its own bar code, the motherboard is a customized MSI nForce 780i SLI, etc.), so be sure and tap the read link to get their view on how this beast will likely shake out. Acer's 18.4-inch Aspire 8920G Laptop Gets Reviewed

First things first: just in case that headline didn't really sink in, this is an 18.4-inch laptop. In other words, those of you with even the slightest of back problems should probably just pass this one right on by. If you're still with us, however, you'll likely be totally engrossed by Laptop Mag's review of the Acer Aspire 8920G. The larger of the two second-gen Gemstones was said to feature a "gorgeous" Full HD display, impressive audio output, a respectable webcam and plenty of power under the hood. They also found the unique CineDash Media Console to be quite effective, save for accidentally activating the multimedia hub on occasion. Overall, critics deemed the lappie a "stellar" machine, but we'd certainly recommend browsing through the review just to make sure you're really interested in picking up a slab this gigantic. More Battery Woes for Sony

Unlike chimps, laptops that smoke are not very funny. One company that certainly isn't laughing today is Acer, which just announced the recall of 27,000 defective laptop batteries supplied by Sony, which are prone to overheating and smoking.

For anyone keeping score, that's now well over seven million batteries being recalled since last August when Dell reported six incidents of overheating and/or fire caused by Sony-built batteries. Since the Dell announcement, Apple, Lenovo/IBM, Gateway, Panasonic, Toshiba, Fujitsu and Hitachi have all joined the recall party. And let's not forget that Sony's own laptops have been affected by the recall as well.

The Acer recall affects TravelMate models made between May 2004 and September 2006, as well as some Aspire models. If you think that describes your laptop, check the serial number against this list and learn how to score a free replacement battery. Until it arrives, though, be sure to remove the defective one and run off of wall power.
