'PewPewPewPewPewPewPewPewPew' is a 2-D side-scrolling blaster game that should seem familiar to anyone who lived through the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. This soon-to-be Xbox Live title is a little different though; instead of using a controller, two players man microphones, one controlling thrust by blowing and the other firing lasers by -- you guessed it -- going "pew, pew, pew." ...

Ok. Let's try this again: Sending threatening messages to anyone, for any reason, even if it's a joke, even if it's using another person's account or e-mail address is a really, really, really, really, really bad idea. Really. Take, for instance, the recent tale of one (unnamed) Maryland teenager who is now headed to court to face charges of sending threatening messages to about 100 people via a ...

Water levels in video games have been terrible since Mario's first attempt at swimming in level 2-2, and things haven't improved much over the years as Ecco, Link and countless others have waded into the sea. Games that approximate the sport of swimming itself, often hastily tacked onto the year's Summer Olympics package, have been universally bad, marked by mindless controls, poor animation, and ...

Gamers have found a new culprit in the great battle against the red ring o' death (or RRoD, for those in the know). Some consumers have told the BBC that they blame the Kinect for the death of their consoles, many of which began failing shortly after they were connected to Microsoft's new motion controller. This isn't just a few disgruntled customers in the U.K., either; gamers around the world ...

The modding and hacking community is simply having a field day with Microsoft's Kinect. It was just a couple of weeks ago that we highlighted a few of the fun and impressive things that people much smarter than us were doing with the latest in motion-controlled gaming peripherals. But those innovations already look simplistic next to the crazy things being cooked up in living rooms and labs ...

On Tuesday, Matthew Crippen earned the dubious distinction of being the first person in the U.S. to go on trial for modding video game consoles. Crippen is being charged with two counts of violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) for modifying his Xbox 360 to play homebrew and pirated games. The 28-year-old Californian was allegedly running a business modifying Xboxes.
The trial ...

The Kinect hasn't exactly wowed gamers, and reviews of the add-on have been tepid at best. Still, the rather elaborate motion-controller for the Xbox 360 ...

Late last week at the Social Gaming Summit in London, Rovio, the developer of 'Angry Birds,' announced plans to bring its wildly popular series to all three major gaming consoles. While multiplayer gameplay isn't finalized, Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka explained that it's a priority, and will resemble the retro 'Worms' series. The lingering question is, can a game optimized for touch-screen ...

The Xbox 360 dashboard is due for a major overhaul any day now, but Xbox.com will be getting the first facelift, going live tomorrow. The new Xbox.com will feature a major redesign, with streamlined search and messaging tools, as well as a new family reporting feature for keeping tabs on your kids' (or parents') gaming habits. But, more importantly, you'll find a web-based avatar editor and web ...

At a quarter of a century, Nintendo's illustrious history of entertaining, ridiculous and useless peripherals shouldn't need recounting. The arrival of motion-sensor technology for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 finally allows non-Nintendo gamers to share in that awesome and absurd add-on action, and various peripheral offerings are beginning to hit the market.
Atomic Accessories (which seems to be ...

Selling a platinum album may seem like small potatoes for a band like Soundgarden, whose hit 'Superunknown' went five times platinum following its release in 1994. But, in the era of iTunes and rampant piracy, even going gold is a serious accomplishment. With the release of its greatest hits album, 'Telephantasm,' Soundgarden has scored its fourth platinum-selling album, and this one on the first ...

When the days are long and the weather is warm, there's nothing like spending some time down by the lake, river or ocean. We're not expert anglers, but, as it has many other hobbies, technology has made fishing easier and more accessible. In fact, if you're willing to spend the cash, you can catch some fish without any expert knowledge or fly-fishing blood in your veins. For the first-time ...

Some time ago, Sony colorfully burst onto the console peripheral scene with its geeky, indispensable sci-fi raygun, but envious Wii and Xbox 360 owners will soon gain access to their own fantasy accoutrement. Performance Designed Products aims to enliven legions of sci-fi deprived gamers with vibrant 'Tron Legacy' controllers for all three major systems. The sleek controllers apparently adhere to ...

Assaulted by a major sensory overload, we felt like we saw so much (and missed even more) at this year's E3. With everyone justly excited about 'Zelda' and 'Halo: Reach', a couple lesser hyped titles caught our eye as we perused the aisles. Here's a list of some hidden gems we unearthed, hopefully giving you a leg up on gameplay, before one of these might go on to win Game of the Year. ...
