WowWee's Tri-Bot Gets an Early Review

We got a chance to spend a bit of time with WowWee's Tri-Bot way back at CES earlier this year, but the folks at RobotsRule recently got a chance to put the bot through all its paces in advance of its summer release, and they've now churned out a fairly thorough review. On the whole, they seem to have been mightily impressed by the bot, and they think it'll appeal just as much to more DIY-minded folks as it will to kids, thanks in no small part to its unique wheel base and tilt sensor-equipped remote control.

On the downside, the bot's sensors were unable to detect anything on the floor below its chest, and it apparently had a tendency to occasionally topple over while trying to climb walls (the ten minutes of pre-recorded audio also seems like it could get tiring real fast). If that hasn't made up your mind, you can check out the review in video form after the break.

Robots You'll Want to Buy In 2008

Robots are everywhere. Especially at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show last week. But here's the good news -- you'll be able to buy many of the robots you'll see talking, posing, and rolling around in the above exclusive Switched video. Check it out.

WowWee Robo-Webcam Is On The Move

WowWee's Rovio is on the move. Check our video of this Wi-Fi-enabled robotic webcam. It streams audio in addition to video and gives users remote control from any Web-connected gadget, such as a computer or even a cell phone. Whether you want to know what's shaking with the fam when you're away or simply solve the mystery of which dog has been peeing on the carpet, you need look no further than Rovio for help.

Look for a Fall debut on store shelves for $299 a pop.

Rovio

Who would have thunk it, but those Canadians sure don't mess around when it comes to... well, the "wow" factor. WowWee, a Montreal-based robotics company that brought us the Robosapien and the animatronic Elvis Head, is already dazzling the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas with some brand new products for 2008. Easily the coolest development from those guys that like to say "eh" is something we first mistook for a miniature Batmobile, a sweet little thing Wowwee call Rovio.

The device, a Wi-Fi-enabled robotic webcam, streams audio in addition to video and gives users remote control from any Web-connected gadget, such as a computer or even a cell phone. Owners can direct Rovio to move to a specific location with the touch of a button, and the robot will get itself to the destination. Using the impressive NorthStar navigation system, Rovio knows where it is, where other objects are and moves from way point to way point on its own. Whether you want to know what's shaking with the fam when you're away or simply solve the mystery of which dog has been peeing on the carpet, you need look no further than Rovio for help.

Wowwee has certainly wowed us with mass-market robotic inventions that dance, growl, fly, sing, and sometimes just act cute, but this is the first wireless one we've seen that has both a gee-whiz factor and a genuine practical use.

Unfortunately, we'll have to wait until the Fall for this one to hit stores, and it'll be a semi-hefty $299 a pop, but it's certain to make you the coolest gadget hound on the block (at least judging by the attention the Rovio was getting on the CES show floor this evening).

WowWee Alive Elvis Head

Speaking of all-singing, all-dancing robots: From the same folks who brought Robosapien into the world of humanoids, comes this freakily realistic animatronic Elvis bust. For King worshippers (obviously), or anybody who's bored by their piles of the latest gadgets, the WowWee Alive Elvis ($330) comes pre-loaded with 20 licensed songs, 37 spoken-word Elvis-isms, and Infra-Red (IR) sensors that make this half-King get his swerve on to movement and light. It's also great for karaoke -- Elvis mouthes all the words as you sing them, though you'll need to purchase an external mic to actually experience it (don't worry, they're cheap). Yes, it's niche. But if you know someone who fits the bill (you know who you are), it's kinda the perfect gift, you know?

Elvis Is Reborn -- As a Robot Head!

Sadly, it's the 30th anniversary of Elvis's death today, but the King lives on in the Wowwee Alive Elvis, a singing, catch-phrase-saying, animatronic head that's sure to please Presley fans (and probably scare everyone else with its eerily realistic appearance).

If you're a fan of this sort of mass-market robotics stuff, you may remember the Wowwee Alive Animatronic Chimp that came out a year and a half ago. With his human features and unforgettable voice, the Wowwee Alive Elvis is the next step in the evolution of mass-market animatronics. Switched got to play around with the new toy for adults, which is just out now for $349.

Check out our up-close-and-personal look in the above video.
