Shower Radio Top Survey of Worst Household Gadgets

Everyone has a home appliance or gadget that sits neglected in a dark corner as it accumulates a layer of grime and dust. By polling 3,000 English women, the Daily Mail sought to uncover exactly what device, which seemed like a needed commodity at the time, is the most likely to remain unused and unappreciated.

In a somewhat surprising victory, the shower radio managed to best all comers. Although some choices look a little out of place, like the digital photo frame, most of the gadgets, like the egg slicer and the facial tanner, definitely seem worthless. The poll also asked about the most necessary home gadgets, with the women ranking television number one, followed by the microwave.

Hokey Snake-Oil Gadgets Claim to Keep Ghosts and Bad Vibes Away

Famed humorist H.L. Mencken, or maybe it was cartoonist Scott Adams, supposedly once said: "Never underestimate the stupidity of the American public." While we would never insult our intelligent readers like that, gullibility does seem to run rampant among Americans, particularly when we are acting as consumers. For centuries, so-called snake oil salesmen and traveling medicine shows have attempted to peddle their useless wares under various beneficial guises -- and modern day gadgets and gizmos are no exception to the tradition.

Chris Hardwick, a watchdog for Wired, recently tested out some dubious sounding devices -- including a ghost detector and a bad-vibe remover -- revealing just how hilariously absurd and useless the products are. Hardwick describes the $100 Safe Space, a device designed to "absorb" negative energy, by saying, "I think I tested this. I'm not sure. I sort of felt like I was testing a rock for sadness." Comedic gold, Mr Hardwick. Pure gold.

Check out his reviews for some more hilarity and consumer consternation, especially if you've been lamenting the void of useless gadgets created by the shuttering of Sharper Image stores. When you're done, take a tour of our "Worst Gadgets of All Time" and let us know if you agree. Or, let us know if you've got a gadget that's even worse. [From: Wired]

Wii Is the Gadget That Makes Us 'Most Happy,' Survey Finds

The Gadget Helpline, a service in England, has turned its attention from helping consumers deal with tech-angst to investigating which gadgets bring consumers the most joy. A survey of 2,500 subscribers of the helpline identifies the Nintendo Wii as the most crowd-pleasing gadget in England.

Released only two years ago in the U.K., Nintendo has already sold 5 million consoles, with 3 million purchases occurring just over the last year. The Wii even bested the iPod (number 2 in the rankings), a hot commodity across the pond since its 2001 U.K. release.

What's your favorite video game console?

The Wii's appeal can possibly be attributed to its gender-neutral approach toward a diverse melange of age groups. The Wii, with controls that require participants to mimic actual movements, attracts non-traditional gamers who previously possessed no interest in rapidly pressing buttons to kill mutants, fight aliens or rob drug lords (not that there's anything wrong with that.)
