We're trying our best to refrain from contributing to the Web's infographic glut, but we couldn't resist this one: the evolution of video game controller design as charted by U.K.-based Cxpartners. See how the original Nintendo directional pad gave birth to the PlayStation and Xbox controllers, and how the Power Glove's whole concept flopped until the invention of the Wiimote. The full image is ...

We're still waiting for flying cars, laser guns and teleportation devices, but it looks like we can scratch one childhood dream off the list: touchable holograms. According to the NTDTV report posted after the jump, researchers at Japan's Tokyo University have managed to concoct holograms that not only react to touch, but that also create the sensation of touch, itself. Apparently, and not ...

NHL legend Wayne Gretzky is making a comeback, but, this time, it's in video games. According to Joystiq, Gretzky is endorsing EA's 'NHL Slapshot' game for the Nintendo Wii, and that means he's also supporting the latest in a long line of weird Wii peripherals -- a plastic hockey stick. The scaled-down stick comes packaged with the game, which features Gretzky on the cover and as a playable ...

Perhaps it's just the video arcade generation, but playing a racing game like 'Mario Kart' without actually being behind the wheel of a car has always left us feeling a bit empty inside. Fortunately, though, electronics accessories manufacturer CTA has finally scratched our hard-to-reach itch. As Joystiq reports, the company has just unveiled a life-changing Wii accessory -- in the form of a ...

Given Nintendo's illustrious tradition of inspiring absurd and hilarious accessories, it requires a significant amount of creativity, ingenuity and skill to develop new products worthy of their ridiculous predecessors. Acting as a shining beacon among a wasteland of wacky Nintendo peripherals, CTA Digital somehow manages to systematically release awe-inspiring add-ons.
With the company's newest ...

Last week, a Gamestop employee leaked the promotional poster for what seemed to be a new Nintendo Wii. This morning, Nintendo officially confirmed that a repainted console will indeed hit stores on May 9th, packed with a couple extras. For $199 -- the same price as the current white Wii -- you'll get the console, two games ('Wii Sports Resort' and 'Wii Sports') and the Wii MotionPlus attachment ...

For tech geeks, searching through old sci-fi books and films for their prescient predictions and monumental failures provides unceasing possibilities for both effusive praise and snarky ridicule. Ray Bradbury's ominous 'Fahrenheit 451' offers an assortment of such once futuristic and now modern creations, and, thanks to Ryan Hoagland, we now seem to be approaching the successful realization of ...

The kickoff to a new football season is a long way off, but gamers can still get a virtual fix on their console of choice. Nintendo Wii owners have a leg up in the realism department, though, thanks to the system's motion-sensing capabilities -- and, more recently, thanks to a new controller from CTA Digital that literally puts the ball in your hands. According to Gizmodo, this soft foam add-on ...

The Nintendo Wii controller, or the Wiimote as it's become affectionately known, has a lot of uses besides just controlling video games. For example, it can inflict some serious damage if you're not careful, or even help out with the yard work. But the latest development in Wii technology is none too pleasing for one reason: it's bound to inspire some terrible frat-boy dancing.
According to ...

Nintendo boasts a long and storied history in terms of ridiculous gaming peripherals, and the company has definitely maintained that reputation for absurd accessories with the Wii. The latest offering of crazy Nintendo creations is the Riiflex sleeve, a dumbbell-shaped covering that fits snugly over the Wii remote.
The weighted sleeve acts as a barbell add-on and is currently available in a ...

The Wii's motion-based gameplay is wonderful, having opened the door to imaginative uses never before possible in video games. While the Wiimote is rugged, that doesn't mean it can handle the sheer abuse of being tossed around, pitched at pets, and rolled haphazardly. Maybe, then, it's fitting that the controller is now being turned into a baby.
The special edition of 'Baby and Me' comes ...

Wiimote accidents are easily preventable. The slippery sucker comes with both a strap and an optional sleeve, hoping to soften whatever damage a klutz might do to his dog or girlfriend. But most importantly, not letting go of the controller requires simple common sense. That's why it continues to be entertaining when hapless gamers fling the things at their screens. When a man helplessly ...

We've seen our fair share of appropriately shaped, if absurd, Wii remotes: the Wii bowling ball, the Wii spray paint can, and the Wii maracas. Now, for enthusiasts of 'Wii Sports' and other baseball titles, Solutions 2 Go brings the officially licensed Louisville Slugger bat attachment to your Wii-mote. It's made of foam, costs $15 at Toys R Us, and snaps onto your separately sold Wii remote. If ...

Most of the times we see a Wii remote controlling something tangible, it's for something entertaining -- like an airsoft gun or Rovio. The Casmobot lawnmower, however, developed by scientists from the University of Southern Denmark, is actually quite useful if you loathe outdoor chores. You can steer it into grass-cutting action simply by tilting the Wii-mote, which is synced to the mower with ...

When we first caught a whiff of the virtual aerosol action promised by Martin Lihs' thesis at Bauhaus University, dubbed WiiSpray, we were intrigued, but we never figured the end product would be this impressive. Lihs has since posted up a short teaser trailer showing the wall in action, controlled by a modified Wiimote controller, with results that should make even the most law-abiding artist ...
