With Wii on Top, Nintendo Focuses on Good Games

Nintendo's Showings at E3 2009

Nintendo's Wii didn't get much respect when it was unveiled at E3 a few years back, but the Big N quickly silenced the critics when gamers worldwide bought every Wii they could get their hands on, out-pacing the competition by miles (it's now the number 1 console in the U.S. in terms of sales) and spawning something of a cultural phenomenon along the way. But, many of those gamers are now complaining that there aren't enough good games out for the system. Understandably, Nintendo focused on games at this week's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), which was held earlier this week in Los Angeles. Here are some of the great ones the company has on display.

'Wii Fit' Showing Up in Middle School Gyms

Wii Fit Showing Up in High School Gyms

We're still on the fence about whether or not the 'Wii Fit' could actually help you lose weight. Sure, swinging your arms around playing fun games like 'Wii Tennis' is one thing, but standing around on one foot and perfecting your balance? Most folks would get bored long before shedding any pounds.

But that's not stopping some New York City schools from adding the devices to their exercise regimen. The New York Post reports that the city's schools have enlisted 25 children in a pilot program to test the Wii Fit's effectiveness. The peripherals were, naturally, donated by Nintendo, which is undoubtedly intent on getting some publicity out of the deal, but thankfully the educators aren't diving into this head first. Lori Rose Benson, head of the Department of Education's Office of Fitness and Health Education, is still somewhat leery of the whole thing, primarily because of the cost involved and the limited amount of student engagement.

Would you entrust 'Wii Fit' with your kid's exercise regimen?

It seems to us that the devices could get children genuinely interested in their own fitness, even if they are less effective than other forms of exercise. Whether or not the 'Wii FIt' becomes a permanent fixture in school gyms remains to be seen, but you can be sure the kids are hoping it will. Now, let's just hope they don't have any accidents, as shown in the 'Wii-Mote' Disasters gallery below. [From: Gothamist]

Man Drops Dead While Playing 'Wii Fit'

Man Dies While Playing 'Wii Fit'
According to the British tabloid The Sun (we know, not the most reliable news source), the 'Wii Fit' can kill you in addition to helping you lose weight and have fun.

The fit and seemingly happy 25-year-old Norfolk, England native Tim Eves was with his girlfriend Emma Tuck and friend Lewis Hickin when, while jogging in place playing 'Wii Fit,' he dropped to his knees, collapsed, and died. Tuck and Hickin tried to revive Eves, but he was declared dead on arrival by the paramedics.

Fitness Guru Prepares to Launch Wii Fit Class Action Lawsuit

Well, this was probably bound to happen. A fitness "expert" named Michael Torchia says he's now preparing a class-action suit against NIntendo which will apparently seek to remove its Wii Fit from the shelves unless they add warnings to the product. The offense? Torchia claims that the Wii Fit actually contributes to obesity, essentially because it claims to be something that it's really not -- namely, a fitness tool -- and discourages people from doing more traditional exercise. He also, however, seems to be concerned that the Wii Fit is dangerous -- mostly because it doesn't stress warming up enough, and users can do the exercises wrong, straining or injuring themselves. Now, we're not going to delve into the validity of his claims (though, how do you explain this dude? Just saying), but we should note that Torchia is apparently getting ready to launch his airwave-rocking AM radio show, "Shape Up, America," and we figure he's looking to drum up some buzz for himself, so we'll be watching to see if he ever actually brings his suit against old Mario and Sons. Step on. [Via Joystiq]

Paralyzed Irish Girl Walks Again, Thanks in Part to Wii Fit

Since a virus struck her at the age of six, ten-year-old Nicole Cahill, of Enniscorthy, Ireland, has lived with paralysis, incapable of taking so much as one step. But, thanks to medical treatment and a new Nintendo Wii Fit, Nicole has begun to walk again, reports the Belfast Telegraph.

This past December, returning to Ireland from a New York hospital where she took her first steps in four long years, Nicole -- like any number of kids -- was excited to discover a Wii Fit on Christmas morning.

What's your favorite video game console?

The game system (aided of course by proper physical therapy) is helping Nicole to get fully back on her feet, her mother told the Telegraph. "The Wii Fit has really helped," Mairead Cahill explained. "It's great because there are so many balancing and stretching exercises on it."

EA Planning a 'Wii Fit' Competitor?

The Wii Fit might have some competition brewing, if Men's Fitness magazine is a publication worthy of the public's trust, that is. The details are vague, to say the very least but, here's what we "know": Dave Kushner, executive producer at EA Sports, told the magazine that the company is planning an 'unnamed fitness game' with a 'new peripheral' which will connect the Wiimote to the player's body, enabling all sorts of newfangled measurements, movements, and exercises barely dreamed of before. Sounds totally awesome, right? Well, if and when it materializes, we'll be sure to rush to the store, buy one, then sadly rue its unused, guilt-inducing existence every day thereafter.

Wii Sales Still Strong Despite Slowing Economy: Big Money For Nintendo

ExxonMobil isn't the only company registering record profits -- video-game maker Nintendo reports today it will achieve record profits, largely fueled by consumer demand for the Wii platform, when its fiscal year ends next March, with about $3.6 billion flowing into the Japanese company's coffers.

While most entertainment and media companies expect a downturn this quarter, Nintendo attributes its brisk sales to the overwhelming popularity of its Wii and Nintendo DS handheld gaming device. Even with a stronger Japanese Yen making the exchange rate a little harsher for Japanese companies, Nintendo's projected earnings are still 36-percent higher than last year's.

But that's just dollar talk. What about actual units sold? 27.5 million Wii platforms spells big-time popularity to us, and we know what all those gamers are playing: Nintendo is selling 100,000 copies of Wii Fit every week. That's a lot of people who are sort of exercising with the gaming system. [From: AOL News.]

'Wii Fit' Set to Outsell 'Grand Theft Auto IV'

Unafraid to incite elitist gamer geek unrest, respected video game industry analyst Michael Pachter has supported a prediction by GigaOM that Wii Fit will outsell 'Grand Theft Auto IV' this year. Yeah, you read right: the latest entry into what is arguably the biggest hardcore video game franchise around is gonna get whooped by an exercise tool -- we're not shocked, we're just laughing.

'GTA4' was dominating at first, but with time, interest has waned, while Wii Fit and its included Balance Board peripheral have stayed hot despite supply shortages. Nintendo's hardware-focused strategy seems to be working; the Balance Board install base is approaching 12 million, or roughly 30% of all Wii owners.

You can bet it'll be put to good use in future games and other, less mainstream applications even after folks have given up on losing weight and resigned themselves once more to lifelong loneliness.

'Wii Fit' Girl Makes Her Boyfriend Do Pants-Less Dance on 'Tyra Banks'

Remember the briefly Internet famous Wii Fit Girl? We almost forgot about her, too.

Lauren Bernat (the aforementioned Wii Fit Girl) went on the 'Tyra Banks Show' last week to drag out her 15 minutes of fame just a little bit longer. On national television, the saucy dame took her revenge on her boyfriend, Giovanny Gutierrez, who was the guy that originally posted the video of Bernat playing 'Wii Fit' in her underwear on YouTube. Bernat forced Gutierrez to do a little pants-less dancing -- 'Wii-Fit'-hula-hoop-style -- for Tyra's audience to much hooting and hollering (video above).

We hope Lauren enjoyed her revenge, but we agree with Asylum that the video of Gutierrez will probably come nowhere near the 6.5 million views that Bernat's pantie-clad-butt-shaking has garnered since being posted in May. [From: Asylum]

New York Gym Offering Nintendo Wii Workouts for $110 Per Hour

Okay, so we all know that everything is overpriced in the big city, and we don't just mean rent. Food, bottled water, parking, movie tickets -- you name it, it'll cost you twice (or more) as much as the same thing would cost you in some nice, small town. Paying $110 to get some supervised play time with a Wii, though? That's a bit exorbitant, no matter where you live.

According to the New York Post, Gravity Fitness at New York's Le Parker Meridien Hotel has mixed Nintendo Wii gameplay into its personal training rotation along with sessions of boxing and weight training. The hotel charges $110-per-hour for its personal trainers, regardless of whether guests are weight-training or, as it turns out, Wii-training. The Wii (which costs just $250 to buy outright) is mixed into a workout routine as a bit of a reward, acting a boost between sessions of more trying things, like real boxing, serving to keep peoples' heart rates up -- 140-t-150 beats-per-minute for some. That's comparable to what you get on a treadmill, and flies in the face of some folks who that playing Wii is not exercise.

Just the same, we'd recommend buying your own and playing from home. It's the economical thing to do, wherever you live. [Source: The New York Post]

Saucy 'Wii Fit Girl' YouTube Video Causing ID Problems for NYC Librarian

It takes a certain kind of douchebag to secretly film his girlfriend playing 'Wii Fit' in her underwear and post it on YouTube (almost his ex-girlfriend). The video, originally titled 'Why Every Guy Should Buy Their Girlfriend a Wii Fit,' became so popular that many began to suspect it was a viral marketing ploy by Nintendo. But both Nintendo and the couple have strenuously denied this charge.

The couple's (Lauren Bernat, 25 and Giovanny Gutierrez, 30) exploits have proven particularly troublesome, however, for a 22-year-old librarian from New York City who happens to also be named Lauren Bernat. The young masters degree candidate is worried what prospective employers and schools might think now that the first result for "Lauren Bernat" on Google is the Wii Fit Girl video on YouTube. She contacted Google about the issue, but since the other woman's name is Lauren Bernat, there is nothing that can be done.

We hope that prospective employers who bother to Google the librarian Lauren Bernat will dig a little deeper than the first page of results. [Source: Geek Sugar and Crave]

Nintendo's 'Wii Fit' Hits Stores This Week

If for some reason you've been so far outside of the natural world that you were unaware of Nintendo's impending Wii Fit firestorm, this should get you back in the swing of things. Today the big N has made the forthcoming release of the exercise / gaming sensation officially official in the States. The device is available exclusively at the Nintendo World store in New York City starting today, but will hit other shelves on May 21st, will run you a thrifty $89.99, and launches with software containing more than 40 activities. Of course, you'll never get to experience any of those activities, as there's already a run on stock, and if you haven't pre-ordered then you're pretty much left to the whim of eBay sellers and their inflated prices. Thanks Nintendo! [Source: Business Wire]

Diane Sawyer and the 'Good Morning America' Crew Ski On the Wii

Diane Sawyer and her companions on 'Good Morning America' got their hands (well, feet) on the hotly anticipated Wii Fit, due out May 19. The $90 package comes with a balance board used to track your weight and play a number of physically involved mini-games that test your balance, coordination, and get your heart rate up... in theory.

Despite reports of people testing the Wii Fit and losing weight with it, Diane Sawyer's performance on the balance board isn't convincing us that this is the answer to America's obesity problem. No one in this video is breaking a sweat, unless it's from the discomfort of looking like an idiot on national television. [Source: GeekSugar]

Nintendo Wii Rehabilitates Injured Soldiers, Stroke Victims

Nintendo Wii Rehabilitates Injured Soldiers, Stroke Victims

Since its release late last year, the motion-sensitive Nintendo Wii has become a runaway success for many reasons, including famously keeping the aging and elderly active with a variety of sports titles.

Given the video-game console's unorthodox penchant for promoting physical activity instead of discouraging it, it seems only natural that physical therapists have begun putting the system to use to help patients achieve better balance and motor skills. As Minneapolis/St. Paul CBS affiliate WCCO reports, therapists at the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital are seeing great results among stroke patients who play 'Wii Tennis.' In addition to actually exercising the patient back to health, the therapists note that the Wii makes the process of rehabilitation more fun. According to WCCO, the U.S. Army has also also hopped aboard the Wii Train, testing the system out on injured soldiers in Landstuhl, Germany to help them regain their strength.

With Nintendo's upcoming 'Wii Fit', which includes a pressure-sensitive balance board that can be used for everything from push-ups to yoga to aerobics on the way early next year, we expect that more practical uses for the Wii's unique controls are on the way.
