Spooklight Gives Your Bike Wireless Brake Light, Turns Signals

Spooklight is the Fanciest Bike Light We've Ever Seen
Being that most of us here at Switched are based in New York City, and that we're all poorly paid bloggers, it should come as no surprise that we often rely on pedal power to get around. Considering that, it goes without saying that we enjoy combining our love of gadgets with our two-wheeled transport.

So we're jazzed about the Spooklight, a bicycle taillight that, at least on paper, sounds well worth its slightly absurd £55 ($88) asking price. First off, it has blinkers -- no more raising your arms to signal that you're turning, only to have motorists ignore you anyway. Even better, the blinkers are controlled by a wireless, touch-sensitive panel you can attach to your handlebars -- no more wires to get in your way or unresponsive buttons to mash. The Spooklight even steals a little mojo from the world of smartphones with an accelerometer that can detect when your momentum slows and accordingly activate a brake light.

USB Prank Device Will Make Your Office Mates Hate You

We're hesitant to tell anybody about the USB Computer Prankster, but since most of us work from home here [Ed. Note: Thanks, Lee], and thus aren't afraid of this thing being used on us, we'll just selfishly throw the rest of you to the wolves. While this little doohickey might appear to be a run-of-the-mill USB drive, it's far more insidious. Those little switches on the side don't merely engage the Caps Lock function, keyboard, or mouse, but rather make them go totally haywire.

A cyber saboteur can sneak to your cubicle, plug this sucker in an out-of-the-way USB port, roll back the time delay, engage the switches, and escape -- by the time you're back at your desk with a fresh cup of coffee. Moments later, you're dragging a very important document into a very important folder, and your mouse cursor will lose control and bounce around the screen like a chihuahua on a meth binge.

Conan Asks USB Co-Inventor What He Has Against Firewire

For a recent episode of 'The Tonight Show,' hilarious troublemaker Conan O'Brien sat down with Intel's Ajay Bhatt, the co-inventor of the USB port (video after the break). As befits the man who indirectly brought us data-storing neckties and heated mousepads, the ensuing interview was -- in a word -- ridiculous. Watch as O'Brien asks Bhatt the tough questions. Does he hate the inventor of Firewire? Would he bring up the USB in general conversation in order to score chicks?

We do find it somewhat ironic that this interview -- with somebody not in the entertainment biz -- is far more entertaining than most of Conan's interviews with those who are. Might we be so bold to propose a regular segment called: 'Get to Know Your Middle-School Science Teacher.' [From: Engadget]

Nauseating 'Mechanical Tumor' Computer Peripheral Made By Artist

The computer peripheral marketplace offers an array of cute and quirky add-ons with which to brighten lonely cubicles and enliven blasé home offices. Artist Mio I-Zawa, in apparent disdain for bright and happy peripherals, has designed perhaps the nastiest computer accessory ever created (check out the video after the break).

The disgustingly realistic 'Mechanical Tumor' plugs into a computer and pulsates and expands in accordance with usage. Since the hideous thing looks as if it will burst and spew bile everywhere, maybe I-Zawa should have considered the heart as a symbol of computer virility and performance. But, then again, if he had, our most obvious punch line would have been rendered useless: while it may look real and putrid, just remember, "It's not a TOOMAH!" [From: Mio I-Zawa via Gizmodo]

'Scent Drive' and 'Aroma USB' Drive Away Objectionable Odors

Numerous companies have been offering plug-in air fresheners for some time, but now the little therapeutic aroma dispensers are merging with the world of high-tech gadgetry. Aroma USB offers interchangeable fragrance cartridges (which plug into USB ports) that can emit a "calming" lavender scent, "energizing" orange aromas, or the fragrance of lemongrass, which apparently promotes "clarity."

The colorful plug-ins should help office workers with stinky neighbors, but they might not be marketable to hardcore techies, since they don't have internal memory. To that end, Scent Drive sells a USB air freshener that actually does allow for storage. Judging from the lack of available Scent Drive merchandise, the drives are quite popular. That's exactly what cloistered and secluded bloggers and programmers need: another reason not to shower or change clothes. Great. [From: Pop Gadget]

Calvin Klein Crafts USB Sunglasses

Calvin Klein takes a page from James Bond, and it's actually pretty geek chic. For the October 2009 debut of the esteemed brand's men's sunglasses, the frame gives way to a four gigabyte USB drive. The best part is that the drive is nestled into the metallic detail of the frame, making it undetectable to anyone besides the user.

So when wearers are out and about, hear a song they like on a friend's computer or need to carry some files at the last minute, they just need to flip off the shades and pop out the drive. With four gigs, there's ample space to store data and a movie or two. And extra coolness for maintaining a spy-lifestyle that fuses fashion and gadgetry. [From: men.style.com via NewLaunches.com]

Heinz Introduces USB-Powered 'World's Smallest Microwave'

We've already told you about a microwave for the car (which frankly might not be the best idea for the morning commute), and now, thanks to a new invention from Heinz, you can nuke those leftovers or that cold mug of coffee once you get to work without even leaving the desk.

Heinz and GAMMA Microwave Technology recently unveiled "The World's Smallest Microwave," according to T3. Measuring 150 x 160 x 190 millimeters, the microwave can be powered by a computer's USB port. While it might seem like there couldn't possibly be a logical purpose for this device, leave it to the world's ketchup king to find one. Heinz told T3 that research shows nearly 20-percent of working Americans skip lunch because they are too stressed to stop working for a few minutes (or too lazy to pack a lunch before work). Heinz hopes the convenience of never having to leave the cubicle or desk will lead to fuller bellies.

As of now, the mini-microwave is only a prototype, so there's no word yet on pricing and availability. We aren't sure that this device will revolutionize lunchtime at the office, but it will be a novel way to steam those Ramen noodles. [From T3, via Shiny Shiny]

How to Turn Your Car Lighter Into a USB Port

If your car lighter is just a wasted hole in your dashboard console, you may want to check out this new gadget from Belkin.

The Micro Auto Charger essentially turns your car lighter into a mobile USB port, allowing you to charge all kinds of gadgets with ease. The design is as simple as it gets, with one open port lying flush against the dash. We love this idea, since it means we could leave most (if not all) of our clunky chargers at home. The simplicity and convenience of this gadget really piqued our interest.

We would be even more interested if more than a couple of us actually owned a car. [From: Belkin, via Wired]

USB Necktie -- Nerdiest Fashion Accessory Ever?

We here at Switched have always been proponents of geek chic, so we were a bit surprised to come across something that made us really examine exactly how far we'd go in order to truly geek out.

The USB tie (yup, seriously) is your dad and grandpa's standard tie except for one very obvious addition: a functional USB input that sticks out of the bottom. At present, the tie is merely one of the many industrial design concepts conjured up by the German design collective Dialog05, but we are sure that any day now someone out there will show up to a meeting wearing it. Its geek force is simply too strong for some to resist.

The funny thing is, the tie looks pretty damn good. [From: Dialog05 Via: Walyou]

Prosthetic Finger Features Built-In USB Drive

Yanko Design is certainly home to many far-fetched, never-to-be-realized gadgets, but this so-called You-SB finger drive isn't one of them. In fact, it's already a bit behind the curve. Apparently, after losing a finger in a motorcycle accident last year, Jerry Jalava took advantage of the situation to get a 2GB USB drive installed in his new prosthetic finger, which he's happy to inform us stores the Billy Linux distribution and the movie 'Freddy Got Fingered.' The drive is even removable to allow for upgrades or different drives for different tasks. Can a pico-projector finger be far behind?

3G iPhone Catches Fire -- Is Apple's Handset Hotter Than We Think?

It's hard to call two incidents of some occurrence around the world a trend, but, when those incidents both involve an electrical device catching fire spontaneously, it creates a situation that's hard to ignore -- especially when that device is the iPhone. On Saturday, Italian blogger Tim Colbourne was charging his 3G handset and, after three hours, it sparked and caught fire at the base.

Tim did a little investigation and found a case of a Swedish handset doing the same thing back in 2008, making us a little concerned that there could be more melted chargers out there. Apple replaced that earlier phone after something of a fight, and while we're hoping they'll be a little friendlier here, we're also hoping this gives Cupertino another bit of incentive to go ahead and switch over to micro-USB already. All the cool kids are doing it, and you don't see their cables catching fire -- usually.

Hershey's Releases Chocolate Gadgets (Well, Sort of)

In a move destined to create an uproar among chocoholics and anyone else who suffers from chocohol abuse, Hershey has announced a partnership with Jazwares to release chocolate-themed gadgets, including USB drives, speakers and cameras.

The USB drives will not only come in the form of assorted Hershey's miniatures, including Krackel, Goodbar, and the old-fashioned chocolate bar, but also as Twizzlers and Bubble Yum. They will be available with 1 to 4 gigabytes of storage capacity, and will range in price from $14.99 to $29.99. The partnership will also release Jolly Rancher speakers and a Hershey's Kiss digital camera.

All of this begs only one question, though. How long until your company's IT guy has to clean chocolate out of someone's USB port?

Update: We just heard from our friends over at TUAW about these absurd Ice Pod (get it?) ice cream bars. [From: Walyou]

Get a USB Cell Phone Charger

Instead of shelling out $35 for a replacement phone charger, get a retractable USB cable and a plug-on tip for your phone. This travel-ready solution lets you charge using any PC USB port and can be plugged into a wall using a USB wall adapter (such as for iPods). Buy a new tip when you upgrade to another phone and keep the same cable. Ziplinq, among others, sells phone kits for under $20.

USB Cake Design Worst Birthday Surprise Ever

Imagine this -- you walk into a custom confectionery and inform the design team that you want the image on a USB flash drive made onto a very special cake. In fact, you even leave the flash drive with them so they can really look it over. Sure, you'd think they would get to frost-brushing that unicorn flying through a rainbow right onto the cake, but apparently the artists in question had other ideas. Namely, creating a photo-perfect replica of a Lexar flash drive on the surface of what appears to be an otherwise delicious pile of sugar. Seriously. Too bad about that black icing, birthday boy.

USB-Powered Lunch Box Helps You Avoid Co-workers

USB Powered Lunch Box Helps You Avoid Coworkers
Before we scored this sweet job at Switched.com, we were cubicle monkeys. We hated our job so much we became cubicle hermits. We piled packages high on our desk and blocked the entryway, hoping that we could avoid more hair-pulling mindless work if we sealed off our cube from the wilderness of the office.

Unfortunately, we didn't have enough room at our desks for a microwave. That meant braving the common area (full of coworkers!) to heat up our left over rice and beans.

That's why we're a little sad to hear that Thanko is only releasing this USB-powered lunch box now. This soft, insulated lunch bag has heating elements in it that, when plugged into a USB port on your PC, heat your meal up to a steamy 140 degrees. If we had this, it's possible that nobody would have even noticed we were there and we would still have that job... which, now that we think about it, might not be a good thing. [From: OhGizmo!]
