Smuggled Video Tape Shows UAE Sheikh Torturing Man

The Internet may have its share of silly material, but every so often it provides us with crucial information that might not otherwise see the light of day.

The word "torture" has been thrown around in the media lately. While the recently released documents detailing the waterboarding of U.S. detainees is disturbing, a video of torture practices that was recently smuggled out of the United Arab Emirates -- and profiled by ABC News -- is absolutely horrifying.

The 45-minute video was smuggled out of the U.A.E. by Bassam Nabulsi, a current Houston resident and former business partner of the torturer -- Sheikh Issa bin Zayed al Nahyan. In the video, Sheikh Issa, who is the brother of crown prince Sheikh Mohammed, brutally tortures a man he believes has cheated him out a load of grain. Sheikh Issa begins by shoveling sand into the man's mouth as police officers hold him down. A bit later, the man screams as an automatic machine gun is fired into the sand around him.

California Researchers Reenact Milgram Torture Experiments

Researchers at California's Santa Clara University have replicated a controversial mid-century psychological experiment that tests subjects for their willingness to harm others for the sake of following orders, Reuters reports.

Largely known as the Milgram Experiment, this early foray into social psychology, while capturing the public imagination since its findings were published in 1961, has been looked upon as a gruesome episode in psychological research, blindly pursuing knowledge while ignoring the fragility of the human mind and conscience.

In the experiment, the test subject -- called a 'teacher' -- is given a list of word questions and a control panel, capable of delivering electric shocks. On the other side of a blind partition, a 'learner' sits and tries to answer the teacher's questions correctly, each incorrect answer warranting a shock of an increasingly high voltage. Unbeknownst to the teacher, the learner is in fact an actor, and not at all a subject of the experiment. While the learner is not in fact being shocked, the teacher is fully convinced that he is, hearing pained shouts following each flick of the switch. Researchers stand by to observe for how long these 'teachers' will inflict pain upon their 'learners,' simply for the reason that the researchers order them to continue.

Coney Island's Robotic 'Waterboard Thrill Ride' Evokes Guantanamo

Robot torture.

Like us, you're worried about the coming robot invasion. But who isn't? Well, certainly not the artist who recreated a Guantanamo Bay-style waterboarding torture scene with robots out in New York's Coney Island. He's got his 'bots under strict control.

The installation, just steps from the location of the famous annual July 4 hot dog eating contest and the Cyclone roller coaster, depicts robots – one as a guard, one as a detainee – in a scene not meant for the faint of heart.

At the "Waterboard Thrill Ride," visitors pay a buck to look through a barred window while a hooded robot pours water into the face of an orange jumpsuit-wearing robot, who goes into a series of violent convulsions for 15 seconds.

"Robot waterboarding became a way of exploring the issue without doing any harm," artist Steve Powers told the New York Times. "It's putting a unique experience on the table. And it doesn't take a great leap of the imagination to look in there and say: 'That's really what's going on? That's crazy.'"

But isn't Coney Island a place for family fun? No worry there, as a sign on the outside shows SpongeBob SquarePants saying "It don't GITMO better!"

Maybe don't take the kids.

UN Says Using Tasers Is Torture

UN Says Tasing is Torture

We may normally think of Tasers as being non-lethal, but a rash of recent "taser"-ings in the United States and Canada have ended with a bit of death for the victim of the low voltage electric weapon. It's led to a slew of bad press, but now a committee at the UN is getting in on the Taser-bashing party by declaring the ubiquitous stun-gun a form potentially lethal form of torture.

Three young men in their 20s died this week alone in North America after being shot with the stun weapons, though the company, Taser, continues to maintain that the deaths are attributable to other factors.

The UN is even encouraging Portugal to pull the X26 stun gun, which it recently purchased for use by its police forces, saying that the use of the Taser violates the UN's conventions against torture.
