Florida Woman's Webcam Captures Robbers In the Act

Many pet owners find it hard to leave their loved ones at home when they head to the office, but offices can be uptight, and few make room for four-legged assistants. So, a growing number of owners are turning to webcams to keep track of their canine or feline companions, and one such owner caught something rather unexpected -- two burglars trying to make off with her flat screen TV, a safe, and other possessions.

The woman, Jeanne Thomas of Boynton Beach, Florida, was watching her two dogs laze around the house on Wednesday when a man appeared on the footage -- and then another. She immediately called 911 while watching the two men -- who were apparently unaware they were being filmed -- wander about the house. She waited while police officers stormed her home and caught the two suspects, Curtis Williams and Steven Morales, inside.

The police also apprehended some some nefarious cohorts in another home nearby. It was all recorded, including footage of the police entering the home weapons drawn, and it's all embedded above for your enjoyment (thanks to the police, who uploaded this video to YouTube). You'll definitely want to watch this one to the end. [From: The Smoking Gun, via Technically Incorrect/CNET]

Sirius XM Developing iPhone / iPod touch Streaming Radio App

My, my -- now isn't this something? Shortly after narrowly avoiding a dastardly collision with bankruptcy, Sirius XM is looking to connect itself with profitable enterprises in an attempt to build market share and regain interest from budget-conscience consumers. Just weeks after hearing that the sat radio company could be preparing a few Sirius / DirecTV bundles, CFO David Frear has now confirmed on a recent earnings call that the outfit is indeed developing an iPhone / iPod touch app. It's interesting to think that a satellite radio firm could be warming to delivering more content via the internet, but it's the apparent diversion from being a standalone offering that has us even more intrigued. It should be interesting to see how the pricing model works with this forthcoming app -- will users be able to get an iPhone subscription only? Will it be tossed in gratis with traditional subscriptions? So many questions, not enough patience. [Image courtesy of SiriusBuzz]

Funeral Webcasts Bring Grieving Online

Funeral Webcasts Bring Grieving Online
We've seen how you can plan your funeral online, which seems like a reasonable thing these days given that you can plan just about anything else on the Internet. However, did you know that you can now attend a funeral online? That's a service currently offered by Shoedinger Funeral and Cremation Service in Columbus, Ohio (as well as a few other places), and is a service we think will become rather more common as people become less inclined to travel.

Shoedinger enables families to create a private Web site that hosts video of the funeral as it happens, but Shoedinger isn't the only player in the game. Director's Advantage, a company that offers technical services and advice for funeral directors, also offers a similar service enabling family or friends for whom travel is impossible or impractical, including one case where a soldier deployed in Iraq was able to view his grandmother's funeral in North Carolina. Right now, adding online streaming to a funeral package is free in some places, like at Shoedinger's, but is about $300 in others. So, shop around. [From: The Associated Press]

Whoopi Goldberg Going Back to Sci-Fi -- on the Web

Whoopi Goldberg is going back to her roots. Her science fiction roots, that is.

The Oscar-winning actress and current host of 'The View' is starring in and producing a new online sci-fi thriller series called 'Stream' on FEARnet. FEARnet is a horror Web site and video-on-demand network. Goldberg had briefly retired as an actress, but the 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' alum saw the chance to reach a new audience in a cutting-edge medium and jumped at the chance.

"The idea that you can be at work and check out a webisode tickles me because that is the future... I can reinvent my way of acting so that I challenge myself and see where it takes me for the second half of my life," she said.

Roku's Netflix Player Handling HD Content "By the End of the Year"

If you're not a Netflix subscriber and aren't interested in becoming one, please pardon yet another post about streaming content from the formerly DVD-exclusive renter -- but for those non-Xbox owning, non-Live subscribing readers who want to get in on some HD Watch it Now action, we have some good news for you.

Earlier indications were that other Netflix-friendly devices would see updates enabling high-def support and now, in what appears to be an official confirmation from Roku's VP of Consumer Products, that company's little $99 box will indeed be "delivering Netflix in HD by the end of the year," complete with a tweaked interface to suit all those extra pixels. Additionally, streaming here will operate over lower bitrates than the Xbox is expecting; good for those with iffy download speeds, but perhaps coming at the cost of quality.

Finally, and teasingly, Roku devs are said to be working on "another major new feature" that will blow your mind. Oh, how we do love surprises.

HD Netflix Movies Coming to Xbox 360 First

It's something you can't get on the Roku. Nor on LG's BD300. Nor on Samsung's P2500 / P2550 Blu-ray players. Nor through Netflix's own "Watch Instantly" portal. It's high-def Netflix streaming, and it's coming first to Microsoft's Xbox 360. Just in case you glossed over this massively huge tidbit when digesting the new dashboard information this morning, we're here to remind you that when the aforesaid dash hits on November 19th, with it will come HD Netflix streaming for (US-based, presumably) Xbox Live Gold members.

You should know that this is only a "soft launch" with about 300 titles available for now, and the litany of details you're surely craving simply aren't available at present time. At any rate, we'd say things just got a lot more interesting in the world of digital downloads, but there's really no need. The real question is: when will everyone else follow suit, and how quickly can we expect current Netflix streamers to get the HD upgrade?

WhereverTV Brings International Channels To Your TV

Not only is this thing powered by Neuros, it even resembles the Neuros OSD. Announced today at the SINO Consumer Electronics Show, the brashly named WhereverTV acts as a liaison between your Internet-connected PC and TV, delivering "hundreds of live international television channels in more than 40 languages from almost 100 countries around the world."

The 5- x 5- x 1-inch box must be simultaneously connected to your router and TV, and once the tele is flipped on, you'll be able to browse, manage and stream scads of international TV channels from wherever you are in the world. Granted, we still prefer the flexibility of the ZvBox (which allows you to tap into all facets of Internet video, not just one segment), but for just $199.99 with no activation or recurring charges (available now at Amazon), this could be just the thing for foreign television junkies or folks currently living outside of their homeland. Video Downloads Coming to PlayStation 3

Downloadable Videos Coming to Japanese PS3sAfter the launch of the Xbox 360 console, Microsoft was quick to add a video-on-demand service, stuffing the Xbox Live Video Marketplace with content ranging from episodes of 'Family Guy' to movies like 'Bourne Identity.' It's been a (relative) success, out-pacing Amazon's digital distribution service last year. Sony is jumping in the video download game, at least in Japan, with the announcement of its own video distribution service for PlayStation 3.

The first downloadable videos will all be related to the upcoming 'Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.' First up will be a three-part documentary on the immensely-popular Nissan GT-R, a series produced by the BBC . The first will be free (as usual), but it's unclear whether future episodes will be free as well. It's unclear just how this will fit in with the already announced Gran Turismo TV, a sort of in-game movie player, or whether those video downloads that will appear in-game will be free. Subsequent videos, which presumably will feature something other than automotive porn, will come sometime early next year, costing around $1.85 each.

Still no word on U.S. plans for direct-to-PS3 video downloads, but since you can already stream just about whatever you want from your PC or Mac to your PS3, does anybody really care?
