Four Nerve-Racking Space Shuttle Launch Aborts

It makes us space geeks bummed when NASA has to cancel shuttle launches, especially at $450,000,000 a pop, but caution is a good thing when you're wrangling 7-million pounds of thrust in order to blast seven people -- and several billions of dollars worth of engineering -- hundreds of miles into the sky. Technicians canceled last week's second attempted launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavor after detecting a hydrogen leak near the external fuel tank. In this case, the malfunction was detected hours before launch, but it got us thinking about aborted shuttle launches. What would've happened if the leak was detected seconds before, instead of hours?

As it turns out, there have actually been four significant (and spine-chilling) aborts throughout NASA's space shuttle history. Three of them occurred with the countdown timer at less than T-minus ten seconds, and one occurred nearly 400 seconds after a launch. Strap in, because we've got video of all of them.

First Human Tweets from Space

NASA astronaut Mike Massimino has boldly gone where no Twitterer has gone before: Outer space. On Monday, he became the first human to post to Twitter from beyond the stratosphere. Massimino, serving as mission specialist on the space shuttle Atlantis, will be making spacewalks to upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope. He's had months to prepare for this historic Twitter moment -- so how did he do in conveying the fear/anticipation/excitement/anxiousness of preparing to have his backside blown into the sky by 7 million pounds of violent, fiery thrust?

"I'm going to put my spacesuit on, next stop: Earth Orbit!!" tweeted Massimino before launch. Ouch. But at least his first tweet from space was properly reverent, having just survived one of the most incredible triumphs of human intelligence, right?

Sadly, no. In fact, his post was just as exclamation point-laden as the pre-launch tweet:
"From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!"
Come on Massimino, tell us something of consequence! At least hit us with a 'Futurama' quote, or a Kirk-esque star-date update! We guess we shouldn't be too upset, since you're a scientist and not really a writer after all. Still, they should... have sent... a poet.

You can follow him here, regardless. [From: The Next Web]

Bat Hitches Ride On Space Shuttle, Presumably Fries

Bat lovers, you may find this story a bit distressing, so we apologize in advance for ruining your day.

A small, free tail bat took an awesome, but most likely fatal, flight this past Sunday when it clung to Space Shuttle Discovery's external fuel tank and refused to let go. The bat was first spotted early Sunday afternoon and, though NASA hoped it would be gone before countdown that night, infrared imagery shows that the little beast hung on past liftoff and into the early stages of flight. No one knows if the bat was an adrenaline junkie or just depressed, but we can surmise he went out in a blaze of glory.

Mr. Bat, we salute you! [From: FOXNews]
