Saudi Man Divorces Wife via Text Message

According to the Arab News, a Saudi man, who was busy in Iraq participating in "what he described as 'jihad'," found the time to send his wife a text message, alerting her that he had divorced her. This is the first documented divorce in Saudi Arabia executed by text message, according to a Reuters report at Yahoo! News. Under Islamic Sharia Law, a man need only say "I divorce you" three times to end a relationship.

Before finalizing the split, a court in Jeddah (a city near the Red Sea) summoned two relatives who had received telephone calls from the man confirming his wish. After their appearance, the court acted to dissolve the marriage.

We think it's a tad crass to end a marriage via text. But then again, if the man is in Iraq doing what we think he's doing (attacking U.S. and Iraqi security forces),then an etiquette faux pas probably doesn't bother him all that much. [From: Reuters Via: IT World]

Saudi Judge Wants TV Station Owners Put to Death

Saudi Judge Wants TV Station Owners Put to DeathWe're no strangers to religious nuts condemning "morally offensive" television in America, but we usually manage to keep the real loons out of positions of power. Apparently, no such luck in Saudi Arabia, where a judge has issued a decree saying that owners of satellite television stations that air immoral content could and should face prosecution and possibly the death penalty.

Though no specific shows or stations were named in the decree, it is widely understood that Sheik Saleh al-Lihedan was targeting Western-influenced soap operas and comedy shows.

Sure, death penalties are a bit severe, but perhaps punishment isn't that bad of an idea -- we know of a few stations that could be greatly improved by wiping clean their schedules of nonstop reruns and bad reality television at all hours of the day. [From: Daily Times]

Al Qaeda Voicemail Recipients Warned By Saudi Government

Al Qaeda Voicemail Recipients Warned By Saudi Government

Chances are you've received some unwanted calls, text messages, and even voice messages in your day. But, we're guessing you've never received voicemail quite like the sort that is under watch of the Saudi Arabian government. Should any Saudi citizen receive a message from Al Qaeda deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri, the government is warning, you must report it by Saturday or face arrest.

Apparently Al Qaeda is attempting to ramp up its attacks in Saudi Arabia and is going on a bit of a recruiting spree. A recording of Zawahri is being sent around requesting either personal or monetary support for the group's terrorist actions. That the Saudi government is aware of the voice messages and is taking action to prevent recruiting is good news.

Saudi Blogger Jailed for Criticizing Religious Extremism

Saudi Blogger Jailed for Criticizing Religious Extremism
You've probably never heard of Fouad Ahmed al-Farhan, but there is the chance that no one will ever hear from him again. Fouad is the latest blogger to become a victim of censorship by a totalitarian regime. The Saudi Arabian government arrested Fouad for criticizing religious extremism and several figures close to the Saudi royal family on his blog, alfarhan.org.

Fouad isn't unique in Saudi Arabia, and Saudi Arabia isn't unique in the world. All over the globe regimes such as China, Iran, Russia and Cuba have made it a matter of national security to squash the practitioners of free speech, and those who might disagree with the politics of the ruling party.

Alfarhan.org has not been shut down completely just yet, though. The normally Arabic language site now has an English banner across the top declaring "Free Fouad" and the letter he wrote to his friends just before his arrest has also been posted. It states that he knew the authorities would be coming for him soon.

Sadly, there isn't much the average person can do except repost the "Free Fouad" banner and make sure the enemies of freedom of expression know they can't hide from the critical eye of the global masses.
