Apple Updating the Mighty Mouse?

Fresh off the disappointment of no-shows like The Beatles on iTunes, a Mac tablet, and an iPod touch with a camera, the Apple rumor mill has toned it down a bit this go around and set its sights a bit lower -- the Mighty Mouse.

Debuting in 2005, the Mighty Mouse's reception was, at best, lukewarm. While it was the first Apple-branded mouse to support right-clicks (through its touch-sensitive, virtual buttons), it had a much-maligned roller ball instead of a scroll wheel. The frustrating rubberized ball collected grease and dirt, quickly rendering it borderline unusable.

Beatles on iTunes? Yoko Says Yes, EMI Says No

Rumors are circulating again that iTunes will finally be getting access to the Beatles catalog. According to a now mysteriously disappeared article from Sky News, Yoko Ono indicated to the news outlet that the Fab Four's albums might appear in the Apple owned music outlet. And, with an Apple press event scheduled for tomorrow (the same day as the release of The Beatles remastered albums) what better time for the biggest music store in the country to announce it would be selling songs from the biggest band ever.

The article, which went up today and was quickly passed around Twitter, was pulled down by Sky News quickly. One employee apparently told the 9to5Mac blog that upper management instructed employees to not comment on the story, and the article even disappeared from Google's page-archiving Cache.

Analysts (Again) Predict iPhone Heading to Other Carriers Next Year

Analysts Claim iPhone Heading to Verizon Next Summer
We've heard the rumors before that the iPhone might be heading to AT&T's biggest competitor -- Verizon. One research analyst (fancy way of saying "good guesser") at Piper Jaffray told investors that Apple will open the iPhone up to other carriers in the U.S. in the summer of 2010.

Of course, there is little more evidence of this than there was in April when we first reported this rumor. Such a move would make sense, however. Apple has managed to successfully increase its market share in France after switching to a multi-carrier model. Additionally, polls have shown that while consumers are satisfied with the iPhone, they are less than happy with AT&T's service, especially in major metropolitan areas like New York.

Verizon plans to launch its 4G data network, called LTE, next year. Some believe the company may be hustling its premier for early 2010 in order to allow time for testing and expansion -- in advance of a possible Apple product debut.

Of course, all of this is just hearsay and conjecture. But in the grand scheme of Apple rumors, we'd still rate this one far more plausible than the Apple Tablet. [From: Apple Insider]

New Sony PSP Coming Out This Year?

New PSP Coming in June?
If you're tired of all the iPhone and Android rumors, but aren't ready to give up on speculating in general, take a gander at what Sony will supposedly be unveiling at the E3 Expo in June -- a brand-new Sony PSP.

The new portable gaming system will supposedly come in a new form and be free of the dead-end UMD drive. Instead, the PSP _____ ('Slide'? 'Flip'? 'Go'? Pick one.) will have eight or 16 GB of flash memory and rely on downloaded games. According to 1UP, the new PSP will have a rather sizable catalog of over 100 games available at launch. It should be noted, though, that many of those will be previously released PSP games.

Sources claim that the new model will retain the classic PSP's controls: D-pad, analog nub, and the same buttons. There is speculation, however, that the PSP (Let's say, 'Slip.') will borrow the high-resolution touchscreen from the ill-conceived Mylo 2.

Two New Apple Devices on Verizon? We Doubt It.

two new apple devices on verizon? we doubt it.

We thought that the days of absurd iPhone rumors were behind us. We were pretty sure that the new phone operating system du jour -- Android -- had finally stolen the spotlight. Besides, the iPhone has developed a regular cycle of reasonably predictable improvements, so what could the rumor mill possibly stir up to take attention away from Google and the Palm Pre? How about the tantalizing idea of two new iPhone-like devices on the Verizon network?

Rumors have been circulating about the iPhone coming to Verizon, and about AT&T looking to extend its deal for iPhone exclusivity through 2011. But carrier deals are boring. If you really want to send the Internets into a tizzy, you've got to entice them with promises of secretive new hardware, like the oft-rumored-but-never-materialized iPhone Nano, or an Apple netbook-like device. These happen to be exactly the devices that a new Business Week article claims will soon be coming to Verizon's network.

Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam confirmed that the cellular provider is in talks with Apple about bringing devices to the network, but he revealed nothing about what the nature of the hardware would be. This of course has given people carte blanche for making stuff up. The two rumored devices have been described respectively as a "smaller, less expensive calling device described by a person who has seen it as an 'iPhone lite'," and as a larger, touchscreen "media pad" that will play movies, music, and make VoIP calls over WiFi, but will not include a cellular radio (Isn't that called the iPod Touch?).

Is the iPhone Coming to Verizon?

Whoa, folks, the week's barely started and already we have some big tech news. According to "people familiar with the situation," USA Today writes that Verizon and Apple have been in "high level" talks for months about developing an iPhone for the Verizon network. Although Verizon's 80 million customers would make an iPhone deal pretty attractive to Apple, this news flies in the face of Apple CEO Tim Clark's comments last week. Cook stated that Apple would keep its iPhone exclusive to AT&T, calling it the "best wireless provider in the U.S."

AT&T's contract with Apple gives it exclusive rights to distribute the iPhone in the U.S. through 2010, but it sounds like we could be seeing a Verizon iPhone in 2011. As far as mobile data accessibility (e.g. surfing the Web, checking Facebook, and using e-mail), Verizon's CDMA network offers slower speeds than AT&T's 3G network. Roger Entner, head of telecom research for Nielsen, told USA Today that, despite the speed difference, Verizon's CDMA network is perceived as more reliable than AT&T's 3G network. (Either way, we think 3G is overrated, speed-wise.)

AT&T stands to lose the most if Apple ends up in bed with Verizon, because many potential customers love the iPhone but are either disappointed by AT&T or already have a contract with another carrier. Customers could be the big winners here, since Apple is likely to continue selling iPhones on the AT&T network, finally giving customers the option to choose a carrier. Rumor Has It: New iPhone to Have FM Transmitter and Video-Editing

Look, we don't want to get everyone riled up here, but the buzz surrounding the new iPhone is getting louder by the day. We think you may like to know what all the little bees are telling us. According to 9to5Mac and Business Insider, the new iPhone may be equipped with, among other things, an FM radio transmitter and new video-editing software.

With an FM transmitter, iPhone users could manipulate their in-car audio without all the bothersome accessories (cords, attachments, bleh). The iPhone already receives FM transmissions, so users would still be able to receive real-time traffic updates and radio, as well. The video-editing rumor is based upon expectations of a newer, better iPhone video-enabled camera. An 'iMovie'-for-iPhone app is the most likely candidate to fill one of the few chinks in the iPhone's app-armor.

Have fun salivating, all you iPhone groupies. We will throw you whatever scraps we can until Mac's unveiling of the new iPhone, which we hope will happen on June 8 at Apple's 2009 Worldwide Developers Conference. [From: 9to5Mac and The Business Insider]

AT&T Releasing New iPhone This Summer?

Rumor has it that AT&T's gearing up for yet another door-busting, riot-inducing summer filled with new iPhone hardware, which would certainly jibe with everything we've heard in the past few months (never mind the fact that June is officially Apple's iPhone release cycle these days, and indeed, AT&T's apparently saying that the June cycle is becoming "a tradition"). That's not terribly interesting at this point -- what is interesting, though, is how AT&T plans to play it. Apparently, the carrier wants to ramp up its -- ah, how should we put this in a politically correct way -- "integration" with Apple's hardware, including a U-verse app that we're guessing will approximate the functionality to be offered by Verizon's FiOS. What really has us worried is not so much the U-verse app specifically, but the possibility that AT&T's sick and tired of having its crapware left out of its highest-profile device, leading to non-removable garbage like Cellular Video on a future iPhone's home screen. It's still a bit early to sound the alarm there, but you know, we're paranoid types around here. It's said the new device will be faster, though the exact meaning of that is a little unclear; the iPhone 3G's chipset is already 7.2Mbps-capable, so we're not sure if the carrier is simply referring to its ongoing infrastructure upgrades. Finally, it's said that a $99 netbook running something other than Windows (don't suppose that'd be Linux?) will be launching this summer, following on the 3G-enabled Aspire One that hit Radio Shack late last year. Heads up, though, AT&T: give us an iPhone with your Mobile Email app on the home screen, and let's just say we can't be held accountable for our actions afterwards. We know you wouldn't do that, but just sayin'.

Will the Next iPhone Software Update Include Copy and Paste?

Digg's Kevin Rose has a solid (but far from perfect) track record when it comes to Apple rumors, and he just drove the nerds of SXSWi crazy with his latest gaze into the crystal ball: he says the iPhone 3.0 will have copy and paste. Kev says that the interface is much like the magnifying glass -- you use two fingers to select the text you want, and then you can cut or copy. Sure, that's great, but we think the bigger news is that Rose says 3.0 won't have support for background apps -- which makes his claim that that 3.0 will bring the iPhone "up to speed with the Palm Pre" a little suspect. We'll find out what's what in just a few days, but in the meantime check the video of Rose after the break.

Microsoft Preparing for New Layoffs?

A new report from Fudzilla claims that Microsoft is getting ready to lay off 15,000 employees, or about 17-percent of its worldwide staff. The axe will apparently fall on January 15th, exactly one week before its second quarter earnings report, and they expect MSN division to be hit hardest, while the successful Xbox crew will probably make it out relatively unscathed.

Meanwhile, an anonymous blogger who goes by the name Mini-Microsoft and claims to be an employee well-versed in the goings-on inside the company has been fielding questions from other purported Microsoft workers on recent cutback concerns. This past Monday he posted a handful of anonymous comments saying that the rumored layoffs aren't happening -- at least not in January -- although a re-organization might be in the cards. Both reports should be taken with a grain of salt, but one thing's for certain -- Windows 7 is gonna rule. [Via Joystiq]

Mac Mini Update Rumors Flare as Apple Sales Dip

Although Apple just posted some ridiculous quarterly numbers, it doesn't seem like it's going to escape the current economic conditions in the US unscathed -- like pretty much everyone else, monthly sales are down in Cupertino, according to the NPD Group. The drop is only one percent total, but it's against a two percent rise in overall PC sales, which could indicate that Apple's premium pricing is hurting it as shoppers turn to netbooks and other bargain machines. That dovetails nicely with chatter we're hearing today about updated Mac minis making a debut at Macworld -- although Steve famously proclaimed that Apple doesn't "know how to make a $500 machine that's not a piece of junk" during the last earnings call, it sure sounds like he's going to try, with a $499 2.0GHz mini in a new MacBook-esque unibody enclosure rumored to arrive onstage in January. If you believe Wired, it'll be accompanied by a $700 2.3GHz version with NVIDIA graphics, and both models will feature mini DisplayPorts -- nothing shocking there. We'll see when we see -- we've been waiting for the mini to be updated forever, and while Apple did just uncharacteristically slam rumors of a new model, times like these could lead to drastic measures.

Candidates Fight Back Against Internet Smears

Candidates Fight Back Against Internet SmearsCandidates Fight Back Against Internet Smears
If you've been getting most of your information this election cycle via the Internet and e-mail, chances are you've come across a series of rumors about the candidates that are just flatly false. The nature of the Web spreads the flames of these lies like the Santa Ana Winds during the dry season.

The candidates are fighting back as quickly as possible by using the Web themselves. Obama has a whole section of his site dedicated to "fighting the smears," and sites such as Factcheck.org do their best to keep the rhetoric honest. That doesn't stop these rumors from having a negative impact on the campaigns, however, especially when they make the front pages of reputable news papers.

Allow us to do out part to dispel some of these more heinous rumors. Barack Obama is not a Muslim, or a terrorist. John McCain did not admit to being a war criminal. Joe Biden is not being replaced by Hillary Clinton. Trig Palin is Sarah Palin's son. Obama is a natural born U.S. citizen, and McCain didn't cause problems for a resort in Fiji by acting in a way unbecoming of a senator.

Because tracking the origins of these rumors is all but impossible, the best we can do is dispel them as quickly as possible and encourage our readers to view every piece of information that they come across (including things on this site) with a critical eye. [From: CNN]

What Will Apple Announce Today?

Apple Rumor Round Up
Don't forget that Apple's laptop-centric event is today at 10am, 1pm eastern, and, as usual, the rumor mills have been going full steam in preparation for the announcement. So what can we expect from from Mr. Jobs today? Well, we've broke down each major rumor circulating and the likelihood that each one will turn out to be true.
MacBooks are in need of a stylistic update, and a move towards brushed aluminum, as on the MacBook Pro and Air, makes sense. A lower price would also help Apple continue to build market share, especially in these questionable economic times.
MacBook Pros are aimed squarely at mobile graphics professionals. The fact that they has continued to rely on Intel's under-powered built-in graphics is absurd. NVIDIA graphics will make the MacBook Pro a viable gaming PC and greatly speed up things like Photoshop and video-editing.
Apple has to adopt the next generation of optical disc at some point, but it's never tried to market its laptops as entertainment platforms (they don't have built-in TV tuners, either). Apple is probably not rushing to cram an expensive drive for an HD format with limited movie and TV titles into its laptops just yet.
Ever since the iPhone hit the market rumor mongers have been talking about Apple replacing traditional touch pads with a multi-touch display. Maybe one day, but certainly not today.
This rumor just wont die. It's been circulation for years that Apple is prepping a touch screen tablet style laptop. Don't count on it. Ever. Tablet style PCs haven't been very popular for Microsoft, so why would Apple make one?
Ha! Weblogs Inc. (our parent company) founder, Jason Calacanis, made headlines when he speculated that Apple would unveil a line of HDTVs that could stream content from your Mac over Wi-Fi. Sounds like a great replacement for the Apple TV in theory, but the price would simply be too high. Phasing out the $229 Apple TV in favor of a $2,000 all-in-one HD monitor just simply doesn't make sense.
Don't forget to check back here later to see what Apple announces. And to keep abreast of live developments, check out our sister site Engadget's live blog of the event around 1pm EST. For additional rumor coverage, head on over to TUAW. [From: TUAW, Engadget, and Ars Technica]

Live From Apple: New iPod Nanos, iTunes Upgrade, and More

Well, it's that time of year time again. What time is that, you ask? Why, for Apple's annual iPod updates, of course! Seven years later and the rumor mongers still have not grown tired of speculating and spreading the wildest rumors about what the new iPod model will bring (hint: it won't make you coffee or fold your laundry).

Even if you believe every rumor and leak floating around the Internet about todays's Apple event, this one looks like it's going to be a bit of a snoozer. Many expect the iPod Nano to be updated and returned to its original slimmer and taller form factor after Apple's very experiment with a stubby media player. Also up for an update is the iPod Touch, which may get a slight cosmetic makeover to match the new iPhone.

Also expected to be unveiled is iTunes 8, which will bring a number of new features to the table, including a Pandora-like ability called Genius that will be able to build playlists for you based on what songs sound good together. iTunes 8 is also expected offer HD downloads for TV shows and movies (and not just on your Apple TV), and a new grid view for browsing your library. Rumors of an iTunes subscription service are also circulating again, but those rumors have been flying since 2005, and we don't lend them any more credence now than we did then.

Though no one is talking about it, Apple hasn't gone a year without some update for the iPod Classic line. Since we're not sure what else Apple could possibly add to this line of media players outside of additional storage space, we're just gonna start a rumor now that Apple is going to start offering them in pastels.

See, isn't this fun? Anyone can start their own Apple rumor. [From: TUAW and Ars Technica]

The announcements start at 1pm, EST, which is right now. For up to the minute updates right from the event, be sure to check out Engadget's live blog, as well as TUAW's meta-live-blog of everyone else's coverage.

3G iPhone Touchscreen Leaks Out?

We're just one day away from WWDC, so the rumor mill is churning at a fever pitch -- and the latest context-less bits of info to emerge from the churn are these purported photos of the 3G iPhone's touchscreens over at iLounge.

Yeah, that's touchscreens, plural -- if these are to believed, Apple's got two sizes of iPhone in store for us on Monday: a 3.2-inch model, and a smaller 2.8-inch model. Note that both of those sizes are smaller than the current iPhone's 3.5-inch screen, which seems slightly implausible -- but kinda-sorta matches up with other rumors we've heard, including those persistent "iPhone nano" whispers from last year.

We still really doubt that Apple will shrink the iPhone's screen size, however, and there are literally hundreds of touchscreen iPhone KIRFs these panels could have come from, so we'd say there's a better chance this is just more hype -- but we know y'all have your own ideas. Let us know in comments!
