Cell Phones Smuggled Into Brazilian Prison via RC Helicopters

According to BBC News, Brazilian prisoners -- hell bent on continuing their criminal business via cell phones -- recently enlisted the help of outsiders and a radio-controlled helicopter in order to get their hands on the devices.

Today, the BBC reported that authorities at the Presidente Venceslau correctional facility in Sao Paolo recently discovered a three-foot model helicopter in the trunk of a vehicle near the prison. Attached to the mini-chopper was a diaper filled with nine cell phones, with five more scattered throughout the car. The authorities arrested four individuals in connection with the plot, and apparently got one to confess. According to that suspect's alleged statement, the quartet had been hired for $5,000 with the promise of being paid another $5,000 once the phones were safely smuggled into the prison.

This past April, correctional officers intercepted a phone-toting pigeon outside yet another Brazilian prison. We're not sure whether we should be relieved or worried that we haven't heard any similar stories about cell phone busts in stateside prisons. [From: BBC, via Engadget]

Our New Favorite Thing: RC Nerf Tank

We're in love. And, no, it's not with some newfangled smart phone, or some USB gadget. It's with a DIY mod of a Nerf toy.

Travis Schmidt, a genius on par with da Vinci as far as we're concerned, built himself a radio control-powered, laser-sighted, iPod-playing (really?), web cam-wielding, turret-mounted, quick-firing Nerf tank. And, even better, he's decided to share with the world how he did it, posting detailed instructions on Instructables for building your own foam-firing weapon of domestic war.

Now, be forewarned; this project is not for those who have no previous experience with soldering, wiring, or working with metal (though that might not stop us from attempting to construct our own). It's a complex build, involving motors, metal work, and radio receivers. But, if you've got the skills, the time, and are as juvenile as we are, it might just be worth a shot.

If you're not up to the task, you can always live vicariously through Mr. Schmidt's video (above) that pits a pillow-wielding girlfriend against the ultimate in foam warfare. [From: Instructables, Via: BoingBoing]

Man's Head Sliced By RC Helicopter

Man Causes Brain Damage with Model Helicopter, Pays Fine
Tiny model remote-control (RC) helicopters that fit in the palm of your hand are hugely popular right now, appearing on shelves at nearly every kind of store you can think of and generally selling for $20 or less. However, they are just cheap, miniaturized versions of more serious model helicopters that are larger, heavier, and, as a man in Hong Kong recently discovered, much more dangerous.

Lo Kwok-Wah was watching another man, Chan Man-king, fly a nearly $5,000 model RC helicopter around. Lo didn't like the way Chan was flying the device, thinking it was too low, and he shouted to him to move it away from people. Seconds later, the copter struck Lo in the head, causing a 20 centimeter gash. Lo now suffers from brain damage and is unable to move the limbs on the left side of his body. Chan was charged with "recklessly or negligently causing an aircraft to endanger a person," and was given a fine of about $900, the maximum offense he could be charged with in that country.

This is deifnitely something to think of the next time you head to the RC park. [From: The Sun]

Artist Uses Remote Control Cars to Paint...Cars

English artist Ian Cook has a unique method for producing artistic masterpieces. He takes remote control cars of various sizes, dips them in acrylic paint, and then controls them to create paintings.

Cook calls it 'Popbang Colour.' We call it awesome.

His most recent creation, a painting of a new Camaro, was created using remote control General Motors replica cars. Nice touch, eh? It's currently on display at the British International Motor Show. Cook will do a live demonstration at the show on August 3rd (he'll be painting a Chevrolet Lacetti World Touring Car).

Cook says he wanted to be an artist from an early age, but he also wanted to approach the craft in a unique way. We think he managed to do both brilliantly. [Source: Autoblog]

A Lawn Mower That Flies

Leave it to our friends up in Canada to spend their long winters coming up with creative modifications and twists on the familiar.

Two Canadian radio control enthusiasts have made a business out of making bizarre things fly. Things not shaped like planes. Not shaped like birds. Not even shaped like a moth or a dragonfly.

So, the next time you find yourself in a park on a warm sunny day, and you hear that high-pitched buzzing you expect comes with a remote controlled plane, look closely and you may see a flying witch, a flying doghouse, or even a flying lawn mower.

Yes, the inventive guys at Flying Thingz have put a lawn mower in the sky. Brilliant, we say.

Think you want to mow the sky yourself? Order one up. They're selling the kits to these choppers for $149 a pop.

World's First Remote-Control Beer Cooler

Deliver Drinks From Across the Room With the RC Cooler
If you wander by the Interactive Toy Concepts booth at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, there is a good chance you'll be greeted by a friendly bump from a drink (beer) bearing device called the RC Cooler. The RC Cooler is exactly what it sounds like -- a radio-controlled cooler.

The soft-sided, collapsible cooler sits atop four wheels and a radio receiver powered by eight "C" batteries (which will survive only three hours of constant use). The round gray plastic remote takes a single 9-volt battery that shouldn't need to be swapped out nearly as often.

After beating back the CES-show-floor-gawkers who were trying to get a good shot of this thing, we were able to get a good look have to admit we were smitten. Yes, it's silly, but it seems to handle well, which makes it really useful for lounge-chair potatoes who like to party!

Now, when you're lounging poolside at your barbecues, you won't have to get up and fetch a beer or hand one over to a friend. Just send out the RC Cooler with a full load of 12 beverages, while you sit back and relax with the remote. The RC Cooler will be available in the Spring, for $49.99, just in time for the lazy host in all of you to pick one up for the first pool party of the season.
