Brothel Lowers Rates for 'Green' Customers

The economic slump has been tough on all kinds of businesses, even whorehouses. When money is tight, it looks like paying for sex is one of those extras people just can't afford. But one brothel in Berlin isn't taking this news lying down (Excuse the pun). According to The Associated Press, Maison d'Envie, or House of Desire, is giving a $7.50 (5€) discount to all customers who either ride a bike or take public transportation to the brothel. So, when you'd normally pay about $104 for 45 minutes with a lady of the night, you'd only pay around $97 if you were to opt for green transportation.

To make sure the clientele is going green, visitors must show a bike padlock key or a public transportation voucher to the receptionist. Although he's open to encouraging other modes of earth-friendly transit, owner Thomas Goetz points out to The Associated Press, "We haven't found a way for people to prove they have walked here."

New 'Quiet' Train Cars Block Cell Phone Signals

The Daily Mail reports that the British transit firm C2C has begun to implement a high-tech film that serves to block cell phone signals in specially designated passenger train cars.

The policymakers at C2C, and those at plenty of other transit companies besides, have marked certain train cars as "quiet" for some time now, but have had trouble policing those cars' restrictions on cell phone use. Coating a car's windows with a special film not only ensures that no radio, cell phone or Wi-Fi signals will penetrate the car, but also reduces the pressure on transit staff who -- until now -- have been responsible for the prohibitions' enforcement.

Apparently, this policy change has been greeted with overwhelming support from passengers. Those of us in the U.S. could learn from these tactics; we could at least apply the film to trains' engine cars. From: Daily Mail]

Podcars Could Be the Transportation of the Future

Podcars, Personal Public TransportationThe AP reports that a new public transportation system is being proposed for Ithaca, NY, home of Cornell University and Ithaca College, that would make use of a reasonably novel mode of transportation called podcars. The electric pods would carry between two and ten passengers to their destination station, which would be spaced out every block or every half mile.

The small size gives them a greater sense of privacy than standard mass transit systems, like the New York City subway system, as well as more flexibility. Stations would consist of side platforms that would allow the computer controlled podcars to pull over and load or unload passengers while allowing other pods to continue along the guided paths to their destination.

This isn't the first such pod-based transportation system. West Virginia University students used a similar system built in 1975, while Sweden, Poland, and Korea all have full-scale test tracks in place.

Some critics claim the system is financially untenable. The pod system would cost roughly $25 to $40 million per mile to build. Major cities would be able to afford such a system, but it would not provide the capacity necessary to serve a population in a city like London or Chicago. Smaller suburbs and towns, which would be better served by this type of transportation model, would be unable to fund the project because ridership would be too limited.

The podcar line in Ithaca is still just a concept, but Mayor Carol Peterson is confident it will be part of an eventual environmentally responsible and pedestrian-friendly transportation system throughout the city. [From: AP and CNN]
