Judge Confiscates Boy's Wii, Will Return for Good Behavior

Parents know that if you want t to get an unruly kid's full and undivided attention (and make them tremble either out fear or anger), all you need to do is hide the TV remote, disconnect the WiFi, and take away the video game controllers.

A Canadian judge, who must be a parent, recently carried that family practice over to his courtroom when he ordered a young ruffian to hand over his Nintendo Wii. The Winnipeg Sun reports the troubled boy had been involved in numerous problems at school, including fights and instances of vandalism, so Judge Marvin Garfinkle decided that the creative confiscation of the Wii, and the promise of its return given certain requirements, might inspire the boy to curb his ways.

Some U.S. gamers might consider this the epitome of cruel and unusual punishment, but these types of atypical sentences, particularly for non-violent offenders, might be exactly what overcrowded U.S. prisons need. And, the sentence definitely beats getting sent to those teen boot camps. [From: The Winnipeg Sun via Yahoo]

Bill O'Reilly and 'Inside Edition' Investigate 'New' Nintendo Craze

Bill O'Reilly has more than cemented his position as a confrontational and effusive media pundit. He's even created his own nickname, the "T-Warrior," as he believes himself to be a "traditional" journalist along the lines of Walter Cronkite. In honor of that bastion of journalistic integrity, the T-Warrior, we bring you this video from his lighter, more whimsical days at 'Inside Edition.'

The video, from 1988, investigates the burgeoning world of Nintendo. O'Reilly wasn't exactly pouncing on the story, though; the original NES had been introduced to the U.S. three years prior to the 'Inside Edition' piece, and had already sold 11 million consoles. The video does have some meritorious moments, though, including some 'Hammers Bros' tips from a Nintendo game counselor who happens to be sporting one of the sweetest mullets we've ever seen. The video also features an interview with Howard Phillips, the first editor of 'Nintendo Power' magazine (who looked like the kid from 'Problem Child'), from back before he acquired his official title of "Game Master."

O'Reilly even offers a bit of self-deprecating comedy at the end, stating "all this is beyond me." You don't say. The video does offer a humorous look back at the early days of the Nintendo movement, so check it out. We're just sorry the clip cuts out before we get a chance to view O'Reilly's run down on the hard-hitting, weekly, Top 5 tabloid headlines. [From: BoingBoing]

Netflix Expanding Out to Other Gaming Platforms?

We've heard whispers of Netflix heading to other, non-Xbox 360 game consoles before, and now adding to the susurrous is a job listing from the company for Engineering Lead - Gaming Platforms. The description calls for someone familiar with the technical hurdles of current-gen consoles for building a small team to "rapidly prototype and iterate on a variety of platforms." Whether or not this means we'll be seeing PlayStation 3 or Wii services in the near (or even distant) future is anyone's guess, but with Microsoft's version so far a streaming success, we wouldn't be surprised if the company took a few steps to increase the probability that 3 billionth delivered flick is digital.

Remote Controlled Lawnmower Steered with a Wii Mote

Most of the times we see a Wii remote controlling something tangible, it's for something entertaining -- like an airsoft gun or Rovio. The Casmobot lawnmower, however, developed by scientists from the University of Southern Denmark, is actually quite useful if you loathe outdoor chores. You can steer it into grass-cutting action simply by tilting the Wii-mote, which is synced to the mower with Bluetooth. Alternatively, you can take the Casmobot for a lap around the border of the yard and then set it to autopilot in order to mow inside the designated zone. We wouldn't run in front of this thing while it's in motion, though; it's probably not as forgiving of interruption as a Roomba. Researcher Kjeld Jensen also suggested applying the same technology to your grandmother's wheelchair, but we really don't think she'd appreciate that. See it for yourself in the video after the break.

Nintendo Considering Video on Demand for the DS via the Wii?

Nintendo's Iwata wants DS video on-demand through the WiiNintendo's Wii, while thoroughly trouncing the competition in overall hardware sales, is way behind both the PS3 and Xbox 360 when it comes to media playback. Nintendo is about to take a step forward on that path with its Wii no Ma Channel, which will offer a variety of on-demand video, including cartoons and other family programming -- in other words lots and lots of Pokemon. Now, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata is indicating that he wants that video to come to the DS, too, saying, "If the Wii and the DS are connected, it should be possible to download video through the Wii and take it with you on the DS." He also said Nintendo is "going to do it differently in a Nintendo-like way." Given the way that Nintendo's handling of online play is "different" from the competition's, you can expect to be punching in 16-digit codes every time you get an urge to watch someone else catch 'em all. Man Drops Dead While Playing 'Wii Fit'

Man Dies While Playing 'Wii Fit'
According to the British tabloid The Sun (we know, not the most reliable news source), the 'Wii Fit' can kill you in addition to helping you lose weight and have fun.

The fit and seemingly happy 25-year-old Norfolk, England native Tim Eves was with his girlfriend Emma Tuck and friend Lewis Hickin when, while jogging in place playing 'Wii Fit,' he dropped to his knees, collapsed, and died. Tuck and Hickin tried to revive Eves, but he was declared dead on arrival by the paramedics.

David Hasselhoff Uses Celeb Status to Score a Nintendo Wii

David Hasselhoff Played the Celebrity Card to Get His Daughter a Wii

David Hasselhoff (he of Baywatch, Knight Rider, and drunken YouTube video fame) recently revealed to MTV's Multiplayer gaming blog that he isn't afraid to play the celebrity card to get what he wants.

The Hoff told Multiplayer that using his celebrity to get things normally unavailable to others is his "guilty pleasure." Besides getting backstage at Billy Joel concerts and front row tickets to U2, the former Mitch Buchannon has leveraged his status as a washed up TV star to screw some poor sap out of a Wii in order to buy his daughter's love.

Following the aforementioned disastrous YouTube video he decided to make it up to his daughter by getting her a Wii for Christmas. When he called his local video game retailer he was told they had none in stock. He told them, "This is David Hasselhoff, okay? I've got a daughter. I love my daughter, more than life itself. This is all she wants, okay?" before getting them to admit they had one held on the side. Whoever that system was held for though was out of luck as Hasselhoff flew off to the store and got them to sell it to him purely because of his name.

Well, we hope it was worth it, you probably ruined some other kid's holiday. Jerk. [From: MTV Multiplayer via JoyStiq]

Wii Is the Gadget That Makes Us 'Most Happy,' Survey Finds

The Gadget Helpline, a service in England, has turned its attention from helping consumers deal with tech-angst to investigating which gadgets bring consumers the most joy. A survey of 2,500 subscribers of the helpline identifies the Nintendo Wii as the most crowd-pleasing gadget in England.

Released only two years ago in the U.K., Nintendo has already sold 5 million consoles, with 3 million purchases occurring just over the last year. The Wii even bested the iPod (number 2 in the rankings), a hot commodity across the pond since its 2001 U.K. release.

What's your favorite video game console?

The Wii's appeal can possibly be attributed to its gender-neutral approach toward a diverse melange of age groups. The Wii, with controls that require participants to mimic actual movements, attracts non-traditional gamers who previously possessed no interest in rapidly pressing buttons to kill mutants, fight aliens or rob drug lords (not that there's anything wrong with that.)

Japanese Police Create a Nintendo 'Mii' Wanted Poster

Just to be clear, police in Japan are not searching for a video game character. They created a Mii -- the custom avatars players can create with their Nintendo Wiis -- to go along with a wanted poster for a very real hit and run.

Cops in the Kanagawa prefecture, an area near Tokyo, have put the custom Wii caricature on wanted posters that also feature a picture of the type of car used in the crime. We'll certainly agree that the poster catches the eye, and will speak to a generation that might otherwise ignore it. It also reinforces the silly stereotype perpetrated by Nintendo's commercials that everyone in Japan is a Wii expert. [They're not]

But seriously, all this criminal has to do is change his shirt, take off those glasses, cut his hair, and avoid making that weird expression and he'll get away clean. [From: Telegraph.co.uk]

Paralyzed Irish Girl Walks Again, Thanks in Part to Wii Fit

Since a virus struck her at the age of six, ten-year-old Nicole Cahill, of Enniscorthy, Ireland, has lived with paralysis, incapable of taking so much as one step. But, thanks to medical treatment and a new Nintendo Wii Fit, Nicole has begun to walk again, reports the Belfast Telegraph.

This past December, returning to Ireland from a New York hospital where she took her first steps in four long years, Nicole -- like any number of kids -- was excited to discover a Wii Fit on Christmas morning.

The game system (aided of course by proper physical therapy) is helping Nicole to get fully back on her feet, her mother told the Telegraph. "The Wii Fit has really helped," Mairead Cahill explained. "It's great because there are so many balancing and stretching exercises on it."

YouTube Comes to the Wii and PlayStation 3

Sure, there's already TVs and devices out there ready to bring the YouTube experience directly to your living room, but yesterday YouTube launched a page just for browser-enabled living room devices (the PlayStation 3 and Wii) to browse on a TV screen. Point your console to www.youtube.com/tv for the new page, those limited by their PC's can check out the video embedded after the break for a demo. It seems like it would be easy to throw a bone to Windows Media Center Extender devices and HTPC owners by opening things up a bit, but the Official YouTube Blog indicates this beta is intended to encourage more manufacturers to include unrestricted browser support (Xbox 360, please pick up the white courtesy phone.) Take a look and tell us what you think.

Nintendo Wii Kills Dog, Briefly

Dog Killed, Briefly, By Nintendo Wii
We've seen the carnage that Wii remotes can inflict: TV's have been destroyed and good old human flesh can barely stand up to the wiicked remotes, but we've never hear of anyone killing their dog before. Poor Kathy White, of Marquette, MI, almost did exactly that while playing 'Wii Bowling.' Right around the recent holidays, her five month old miniature Sheltie, Ozzy, jumped up in front of Kathy and was struck in the temple.

Kathy called her neighbor Pene Honey in a panic. When Pene got there, Ozzy was not breathing and his heart had stopped. After a little doggy CPR, Pene got Ozzy's vitals going again and they rushed him to the vet.

Have your pets ever been injured by your gadgets?

Following weeks of recovery, Ozzy is almost back to normal, and he has been banished from the room while Wii gaming sessions are taking place. We suggest Kathy look at the Nerf sleeves for the Wiimote, which could make her gaming sessions a little more puppy friendly. [From: MSNBC]

Obama Bringing Wii to White House

Barack Obama's affinity for technology is well documented, so it should be no surprise that he enjoys playing the occasional video game. For a politician who's all about change, it's only fitting that he prefers the most innovative console out there -- the Nintendo Wii.

Yes, America, the President-elect is bringing the popular game system to the White House. He bought the Wii as a Christmas gift for his girls but says he enjoys playing too, especially Wii Sports. He told 'The New York Times' that he's mainly playing the bowling game and is scoring much higher than the pathetic 37 he rolled while campaigning. One question remains -- do you think that he, like most Christmas shoppers, had any trouble getting his hands on a console? [From: Joystiq]

Nintendo Faces Class-Action Lawsuit Over Defective Wii Straps

Nintendo's fended off class-action lawsuits over "defective" Wiimote straps in the past, and if you remember, they also replaced about 3.2 million of the straps (a/k/a "all of them") around the same time too -- way back in December of 2006. Well, the same lawyer's back for round two with a new, nearly identical suit, but this one also alleges that Nintendo knew that the defect existed and was negligent in their failure to report the problem to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Nintendo's probably not stoked about the news -- but we've got a feeling that the company's record-breaking sales will balm the wounds a little. According to NPD data just released, the company sold 2 million Wiis and 1.56 million DS units in November, an all-time hardware sales record for a month other than December. Yeah, who cares about a few busted up TVs and black eyes in the face of those numbers?

November Video Game Sales Up

Doesn't this whole financial crisis just make you want to kill stuff?

Apparently yes, it does: the video game industry raked in nearly $3 billion in sales in the month of November, according to market researcher NPD Group's most recent report.

Retail sales in the US of gaming hardware, software and accessories jumped 10-percent from the same period a year ago. The industry, said NPD analyst Anita Frazier, is still on track to bring in $22 billion in U.S. sales this year.

Nintendo led the pack in November (as it has done for some time now), selling 2 million Wiis -- the most yet in a month, according to the company. Microsoft's Xbox 360, meanwhile, while receiving a boost from the release of system-seller 'Gears of War 2,' sold less than half that number at 836,000 units, while Sony's PlayStation 3 sold half again, at 378,000 units.

Okay, sorry, we take it back: You don't want to shoot stuff. You want to hit stuff. [From: Newsvine]
