Allen Iverson Breaks NBA Signing News on Twitter

Basketball player Allen Iverson has been detailing his arduous return from a back injury, and his hopes of landing on a new NBA team, with almost daily updates on Twitter. Today, he scooped ESPN, FOX Sports, and every other sports media outlet by announcing his return, and his new team, when he tweeted, "God Chose Memphis as the place that I will continue my career."

Twitter's reputation is certainly shifting, particularly as the site receives more and more recognition as an actual news outlet. But, even though the tweets should endear Iverson to Grizzlies fans, he might not receive the warmest welcome from the Memphis writers he beat to the punch. They might prefer that he make headlines on the court, and not by schooling people off of it. [From: Mashable]

Outspoken NBA Owner Receives $25,000 Fine for Tweeting

Mark Cuban, the enigmatic and oft-fined tech-mogul and owner of the the NBA franchise the Dallas Mavericks, discovered a new method of drawing the ire of league officials last week. Upset with an officiating crew chief for not actively addressing two separate incidents between a Maverick player and a Denver Nugget player, Cuban criticized the referee via tweeting (what the short 140-character messages on Twitter are called). Staunch defenders of its referees, and squelcher of any public dissent, the NBA immediately slapped Cuban with a $25,000 fine. At least he wasn't revealing plans to fix the game with one of the refs.

Cuban loves his reputation as a tech-savvy rabble-rouser, but he can't claim trendsetter status with this latest conflagration; two weeks ago, Milwaukee Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva received a tongue-lashing from his coach for tweeting during halftime.

Cuban is, however, the first in the NBA to receive a monetary penalty for using the microblogging site. Intimately familiar with that sort of punishment, he has accumulated almost $2,000,000 in fines during his career as owner. His tweet about this most recent drop in the bucket? "just found out got fined25k by nba.) nice." It must be pretty nice to be able to be so flippant about $25,000. [From: Valleywag]

NBA Vet Jalen Rose Is Wired, In a Wireless Kind of Way (Interview)

Jalen Rose, current ESPN/ABC analyst and distinguished former NBA veteran, is famous for many things.
Rose first gained nationwide exposure with his hardwood exploits at the University of Michigan in the early '90s. Starting at point guard for the Wolverines, Rose was the outspoken leader of the "Fab 5. He went on to play 13 seasons in the NBA, helping lead the Indiana Pacers to the NBA Finals.

He is also the CEO and Founder of Three Tier Entertainment, an L.A. based production company which is bringing the romantic comedy 'Mary & Joseph- The Greatest Love Story Ever' 16 City stage play to various theaters across the country.

The play is a hypothetical account of what happened after Mary informed those close to her of her Immaculate Conception. Joseph takes it hard. Mary's mother Anne takes it harder. 'Mary & Joseph' is directed and co-written by Ed Weinberger, creator of 'Taxi' and 'The Cosby Show,' and is a faith-based, comedic retelling of the biblical characters involved with the situations surrounding Immaculate Conception.

Since Mr. Rose is obviously constantly traveling and inevitably busy, we took a moment to ask him how he keeps connected during those long days and nights on the road. Turns out he's incredibly wired, in a wireless kind of way. Read on to find out more.

NBA Posts Online Highlight Reels

NBA Posts Online Highlight ReelsThough live since the beginning of the playoffs, the NBA waited until today to formally announce the launch of its new video site, download.nba.com. There, b-ball fans have the option to either download any game from the playoffs for $3 a pop, get a series of playoff games between two teams for $13 or get the playoffs in their entirety for $80. Games are commercial-free and typically two hours long.

The NBA's digitization of its goods follows similar programs launching or already in place by the other major sports outfits. Both NASCAR and Major League Baseball are currently available on iTunes, as were highlights from the 2006 Stanley Cup. In fact, the NBA itself already makes limited video content available on YouTube.

Though the league is limiting its focus to this year's playoffs at the moment, it claims to be working on digitizing 40,000 some odd games going back to 1990, which will take an estimated eight years to complete. Why so long? Because the NBA isn't simply letting a computer convert old videotapes into stream-able downloads. A human must watch every minute of each game and document the action during each possession. The hope is that, in the future, a user could search download.nba.com for 'Michael Jordan dunk' and be shown every play in which Michael Jordan ever dunked -- which used to happen quite a bit, we hear.
