Army and EnerDel Working on Hybrid Humvee

With the economy the way it is, and your unemployment check the way it is, we know it's hard to maintain your douche status and keep that Hummer gassed up. But fear not. According to CNET, battery manufacturer EnerDel just signed a $1.29 million contract with the U.S. Army to design a full-sized Humvee that runs, at least in part, on electricity.

Back in August, Raser Technologies showed off a Hummer powered by a hybrid engine that, thanks to dubious methods of measuring mileage, was able to lay claim to getting 100 miles per gallon. But that Hummer was the smaller H3 consumer model. For those with real inadequacies, though, that need real overcompensation, the H3 just won't do. They need the proper Humvee. You know, the one that takes up four parking spots and blocks three lanes of interstate traffic.

Lamborghini to Go Green With Hybrids by 2015

Responding to the decidedly 21st-century dilemma of "greening" the king of supercars, car manufacturer Lamborghini believes it has come up with an answer. Its newest vehicle will use a small electric motor when moving at slow speeds, but will allow the full power of its gas-guzzling engine to take hold on the open road.

The move towards hybrid technology comes shortly after Lamborghini's recent announcement of its Estoque family sedan. The company plans to start actually building these hybrid freaks of vehicular nature by 2015.

So, when you're driving your $500,000 sports car around town in your $25,000 suit after your $400 dinner hoping to pick up on members of the fairer sex, you can now save a few bucks on gas while doing so. [From: D-vice]

Hybrid Owners Drive More and Get More Tickets, Study Shows

Quality Planning, an insurance consultant firm, recently concluded a two-year study on the driving habits of approximately 350,000 automobile owners. It investigated driving tendencies and maintenance costs to determine the unique risks involved with insuring hybrids. Apparently, hybrid owners are ticket-prone, rich, and into marathon-style distances.

According to the survey, hybrid owners drive approximately 25-percent more miles (commute excluded) than gas-only vehicle owners. Incidentally, they also accumulate more traffic citations per 100,000 miles than their gas-guzzling counterparts. (Perhaps the hybrid owners are just trying to prove that their "green" cars have some muscle, too.) The results also indicated that, even though the cost differential is significantly narrowing, hybrids are still more expensive to maintain than other cars.

While the results of the study might not be overly surprising, the fact that some insurance carriers provide policy discounts for hybrid owners is significant. Some studies indicate that hybrids are now cheaper to own in the long term, but that may be offset by the elimination of insurance policy discounts and the increase of policy rates, thank you very much, Quality Planning. Cheap Ford Fusions E-Mail Just Another Spam Hoax

If you recently received an e-mail offer for $15,500 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid, you can just go ahead and move that to your spam folder. The automaker is the latest company to have its name used in an spam scam and has no intentions of giving you a deal this good.

As AutoblogGreen reports, an e-mail from "Ford Motor Company" is making the rounds. The e-mail offers a deal on the popular model: "Due to the World Economy Recession, Ford Motor Company, Inc undergo a statistic fall in Sales and result in a drastic financial crisis this last season," it begins, before explaining that Ford is selling 500 Fusions at nearly half of the normal $27,270 starting price. As is the case with most spam e-mails, it includes some grammatical errors and shady attachment.

New Hybrid Hummer Gets 100 Miles Per Gallon

We once asked a friend why they bought a Hummer and their response was, "If you're gonna go big, go big." Well, it seems that Raser Technologies, a company specializing in electric motoring, has taken those words to heart -- only it's going in the opposite direction. Set to be unveiled next week, the Raser H3 is a converted electrical-hybrid version of the gargantuan SUV retrofitted to get up to 100 miles per gallon. That's more than five times the paltry 18 miles per gallon (mpg) that the current H3 gets (on the highway, with a tailwind), and more than double the mileage of the current Toyota Prius.

So why did Raser choose a Hummer to start with? "SUVs and trucks are the number one selling vehicle in America," company vice president Jim Spellman told Wired. "Unlike the Prius, which is a mild hybrid vehicle, an eco-friendly SUV will get people's attention." Spellman also noted that the size of the vehicle came into play because of the required battery packs. "There was plenty of room in the back of the Hummer to install them, and they don't affect the ground clearance of the vehicle," he said.

Details on pricing and availability are still unknown, but Raser plans to release more details when their petrol-sipping H3 prototype is unveiled at next week's Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit. [From: Wired]

Next-Gen Prius Comes with Solar-Panel

The very shoe-like 2010 Toyota Prius has made its official debut at this week's Detroit Auto Show. The company estimates it'll have a 50 MPG rating -- up from 46 MPG in the previous model -- and there's a bigger, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine for improved highway mileage. In addition to Power and Eco driving modes, EV Drive will let you run on battery alone for about a mile, which if nothing else should provide a little extra push for getting to the gas station when you've held off for too long.

One of the coolest (literally) new features is the optional solar panels in the moonroof that will generate power for circulating air and keeping the interior temperature from going too high. If that's not enough, there's a remote-controlled A/C system that can run on battery alone and lets you set the temperature before you get in.

Photos of New Presidential Hybrid Limo Leaked, Critiques Abound

Covert photographs of an impressive new presidential vehicle have surfaced in recent days, CNN.com reports, and opinions have been spilling forth.

According to CNN, online critics of the Cadillac-manufactured limousine's apparently indestructible design have named it "ugly as sin" and compared it to "an Abrams tank."

Indeed, the car is stout, to say the least; its doors -- encasing windows of ballistic glass -- are eight inches thick.

The fortress-like aspects of the car could disorient a president, says Joe Funk, a former Secret Service agent and driver of President Bill Clinton.

"The everyday noises will be gone, and he will be totally isolated in this protective envelope," he explains. "At the same time, I think he will be surprised at the communication capabilities."

Perhaps the vehicle -- which, on January 20th, will carry President-elect Barack Obama to his inauguration to the presidency -- is representative of the challenges he will face as president. While defending the United States from our zealous aggressors, he must reach out still further to embrace, and increase in number, our allies. Head on over to CNN to check out the leaked spy shots. Mercedes Debuts BlueZERO Line of Hybrid Cars

When everyone was going hybrid, taking baby-steps toward an alternative-fueled future, Mercedes jumped into its prototype Hydrogen-powered machines and buzzed off toward the horizon. Now, perhaps realizing that it moved a bit too quickly for the distribution infrastructure to keep up, the company seems to be pulling back a bit, introducing the BlueZERO line of autos that all share the same shell -- pictured above looking good at its most flattering angle, but not so hot after the break. The series will encompass three cars: the fully-electric E-CELL (possibly featuring Tesla batteries), with a 120 mile range; the hydrogen-powered F-CELL, with a 248 mile range; and the hybrid E-CELL PLUS that, like the Volt, will carry a gasoline engine to recharge the batteries and provide up to 370 miles of non-stop motoring (10 more than Chevy's offering). The trio are set to release in 2010, which should be a historic year for the auto industry... assuming we still have an auto industry in 2010.

Honda Debuts Futuristic FC Sport Fuel-Cell Hybrid Concept

If the Tesla Roadster has proven anything other than the disruptive effects of a hyper-inflated ego, it's that well designed eco-vehicles will sell... at any price. Yet the general design theme amongst hybrid builders appears to be your grandfather's loafer. Honda too, just look at the FCX Clarity. So we're pretty stoked to see Honda roll out its FC Sport concept three-seater (driver front-and-center) at the LA Auto Show using the same V-Flow fuel cell stack and electric drivetrain found in the FCX Clarity. Only thing is, it's a non-functional concept with little hope of hitting the market anytime soon if history serves. Good news for GM but bad news for consumers. As a wise man of consumer electronics once said:
"You know how you see a show car, and it's really cool, and then four years later you see the production car, and it sucks? And you go, What happened? They had it! They had it in the palm of their hands! They grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory! What happened was, the designers came up with this really great idea. Then they take it to the engineers, and the engineers go, 'Nah, we can't do that. That's impossible.' And so it gets a lot worse. Then they take it to the manufacturing people, and they go, 'We can't build that!' And it gets a lot worse."
Or to paraphrase: It's like asking for a Big Mac and getting a fish sandwich.

Eco-Friendly Hybrid Yacht Can Be Yours for $600,000

Yachts are usually pretty environmentally unsound, so the DSe Hybrid just debuted by Island Pilot at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show should be a real breath of fresh air (literally) if green is your thing. And apparently it's really about as eco-friendly as it gets -- using a combination of diesel, solar and electric power (when it goes into commercial production it will also boast wind turbines) the vessel can cruise at up to six knots on a sunny day for an indefinite period of time without any fuel and zero emissions. Possibly best of all (for those like us with delicate ears, anyway), it's virtually silent when not running on fuel. If you need to get somewhere in a hurry however, its Parallel Hybrid Propulsion System in diesel mode will move at up to 13 knots.

There are all sorts of "luxury" amenities on board including a 26-inch HDTV and totally ferocious Bose home theater system. Island Pilot is taking pre-orders now (you have to lay down $5,000 just to reserve one) for delivery in 2009, but fair warning: this thing has a price tag of $600,000. [Via gizmag]

Is the Flying Car Just Two Years Away?

From the "We'll believe it when we see it" category comes the Autovolantor -- a car supposedly now in development that is based on the roughly $350,000 Ferrari 599 GTB. It's being developed by a company called Moller International, and here's the thing: it freaking flies.

Apparently, the car will have the ability to take off vertically and hover, with eight powerful thrusters that direct air down for takeoff (then they tilt so the car can fly forward) -- just like the Harrier Jump Jet. The Autovolantor is expected to be able to do 100 mph on the ground, and 150 mph in the air.

Designer Bruce Calkins says the car features a specially designed hybrid fuel and electric system to power the thrusters, creating as much as 800 horsepower. He believes it will be able to fly at altitudes of up to 5,000 feet.

"At first we were very skeptical that we could adapt a ground-vehicle with our technologies and make it work," designer Bruce Calkins told The Telegraph."But the model allowed us to quickly verify that it could in fact be done." He hopes the vehicle's ability to "quick hop out of traffic" will attract funding for the project. Two years, eh? [From: The Telegraph]

Next Generation Prius Pictures Leak Out

We thought we had a handle on what the next-gen Prius was going to look like when we spotted those renders back in July, and Toyota's just confirmed that some press shots that leaked out last week are the real deal, not just photos of a super-high-tech sneaker. The company isn't providing any more information until the official debut at January's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but we're hoping we'll get some more details about those plug-in fleet tests, as well as those solar plans. Check a few more shots at links below.

V2G Technology Will Turn Suburbs Into Power Plants

We've been hearing about vehicle-to-grid (V2G) for quite a while, and now a team at the University of Michigan is conducting an extensive study on the technology as part of a national sustainable energy solution. While current electric plants are good at generating power, they often fall short when it comes to storage -- which can be a problem when there's a power surge or when demand increases. V2G will let hybrid-electric owners sell the power their car generates to the electrical power grid whenever the car is not in use.

The research team envisions a time when millions of hybrid vehicle owners will come together to create one large battery, allowing us all to play a small part in building our nation's energy independence. And sure, this all sounds good in theory. But wouldn't that mean relying on the neighbors to provide a key piece of the nation's infrastructure? Have you met the neighbors? Doesn't that seem a little... iffy? [From: Physorg.com]

Electric Cars from Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge Revealed

Seeing that General Motors left a gaping hole of opportunity for other automakers to produce a new EV by 2010 that isn't uglier than sin itself, it's no real shock to see Chrysler champing at the bit. Just this week, the company has introduced a trio of advanced electric-drive vehicle prototypes (simply coined Chrysler EV, Jeep EV and Dodge EV for now), one of which will mysteriously surface in 2010 for consumers in North America. Feel free to hit the read link for the entire hope-filled press release and the gallery of images, but if we've learned anything of late about those succulent concept shots, it's to not believe them (at all).

GM's Chevy Volt Finally Really Unveiled, For Real

The 2011 Chevy Volt has been officially unveiled this morning and we are pleased to note that the new pictures are much more flattering than the "glamour shots" released a week or so ago. The interior of the Volt features a driver-configurable LCD instrument display, 7-inch touch screen information display (for climate and "infotainment" control), Bluetooth, USB and optional GPS. Of course, what makes this vehicle noteworthy is the sheer plug-in-hybridness of it all: the car runs entirely off of its 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery. For trips up to 40 miles, the battery's initial charge will suffice (granted you remembered to plug it in overnight). After the battery is spent, the gasoline generator provides electricity to the Volt's electric drive unit while simultaneously sustaining the charge of the battery for a range of "several hundred additional miles," according to GM. Hit the read links for far more info. and check out a drool-worthy interior photo after the break.
