Neil Young Debuts Video Shot Entirely in His New Green Car

Throughout his career, musician Neil Young has earned a well deserved, blue-collar reputation as a voice for the common man and the oppressed, speaking out against governmental and corporate greed and corruption. With his new 'Johnny Magic' music video, filmed entirely inside the experimental 'LincVolt' automobile, Young seeks to honor "people and heroes and change" that represent "Life in America," according to his statement at The Huffington Post.

The rocker based 'Johnny Magic' on John Goodwin, who is identified in the song as the "motorhead messiah" of Wichita, Kansas. Goodwin, a mechanic, turned Young's 1959 Lincoln Continental Mark IV convertible into a biodiesel-fueled, electrical hybrid, "heavy metal Continental" that gets 100 miles to the gallon, and, based on the lyrics, travels in a "blaze of silence."

With the project, Young aims to provide an affordable, environmentally friendly car that will
inspire the automotive giants of Detroit to adapt to global warming issues, as well as assuage financial worries during a period when, as he says during the song, "the whole world started running out of money." Well, we're hoping the magic men can do the same conversion for our classic '70 Gremlin, and on the cheap. But only because of unselfish ecological concerns. We promise. Besides, 'GremVolt' has a nice ring to it. [From: The Huffington Post Via: autobloggreen]

High Schoolers Create Car That Gets 1,693 Miles-Per-Gallon

Warning: This article may cause serious arousal in environmentally-conscious individuals and/or anyone distraught at the current price of gasoline.

Engineering students from high schools all over Indiana are preparing to enter their automotive creations into an annual mileage competition. The majority of entries achieve fuel economy that most people only fantasize about, with many cars breaking the 1,000 miles-per-gallon (mpg) mark. That's right, 1,000-mpg.

The annual Super Mileage Challenge is hosted by the Indiana Mathematics, Science, Technology and Education Alliance (IMSTEA) and takes place on April 28 at O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis. Last year's winner, Mater Dei High School from Evansville, produced a vehicle capable of doing 1,345-mpg. That's not bad, but they weren't satisfied. Mater Dei went back to work and quickly upped their creation's fuel economy to 1,693-mpg.

Please excuse the rest of us while we sob at the wheel of our "economy" cars. 30-mpg now seems so very Hummer-like. Damn you, brilliant teenagers. By damn you, of course, we mean congratulations on your absurd brilliance.
