Outspoken NBA Owner Receives $25,000 Fine for Tweeting

Mark Cuban, the enigmatic and oft-fined tech-mogul and owner of the the NBA franchise the Dallas Mavericks, discovered a new method of drawing the ire of league officials last week. Upset with an officiating crew chief for not actively addressing two separate incidents between a Maverick player and a Denver Nugget player, Cuban criticized the referee via tweeting (what the short 140-character messages on Twitter are called). Staunch defenders of its referees, and squelcher of any public dissent, the NBA immediately slapped Cuban with a $25,000 fine. At least he wasn't revealing plans to fix the game with one of the refs.

Cuban loves his reputation as a tech-savvy rabble-rouser, but he can't claim trendsetter status with this latest conflagration; two weeks ago, Milwaukee Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva received a tongue-lashing from his coach for tweeting during halftime.

Cuban is, however, the first in the NBA to receive a monetary penalty for using the microblogging site. Intimately familiar with that sort of punishment, he has accumulated almost $2,000,000 in fines during his career as owner. His tweet about this most recent drop in the bucket? "just found out got fined25k by nba.) nice." It must be pretty nice to be able to be so flippant about $25,000. [From: Valleywag]
