Bully Web Site Lands Missouri Teen in Jail

Cyber-bullying has become a major issue around the world. Teens across the U.S. and across the pond in Europe find themselves constantly faced with this new form of harassment. But if we had to pick one place as the epicenter of this disturbing new trend it would be Missouri.

The home state of Megan Meier, a girl who committed suicide just before her 14th birthday as a result of being bullied on MySpace, was one of the first to pass anti-cyber-bullying legislation and to expand local harassment laws to cover digital communications. Since the passage of that law, several high-profile cases have come out of the state, including one that involved a 21-year-old woman sending threatening and vulgar text messages to a 17-year-old girl. Now, the state has another cyber-bullying incident garnering national attention. A ninth-grade girl from the town of Troy has been arrested for creating a Web site dedicated to harassing and mocking a fellow student.

Alleged Bullies Sued Over Racist and Obscene Fake Facebook Profile

We're pretty sure that many victims of bullies would gladly go back to the good ol' days, when mocking and persecution didn't have the speed and reach the Internet affords. But bullies are quickly finding out that the Web doesn't provide as much protective anonymity as they may have thought.

One of the new avenues for bullying is impersonation via social networking sites. But four teens in Cook County, Illinois may have gone a little too far in alleged attacks on a high school athlete. They are now finding themselves defendants in a lawsuit that could have dire financial consequences for both them and their families. The four boys, identified only by their initials -- R.C., A.G., K.Z., and M.S. -- are being sued on five separate counts, including defamation and emotional distress, by the victim and his mother.

First Convicted Cyber-Bully Is Jailed

Cyber-bullying and Web-related deaths have become increasingly troubling in Great Britain, particularly since over a one-year period 17 teens haved killed themselves, allegedly because of social networking sites. The suicides even prompted the head of the U.K. Roman Catholic Church to comment that "a key factor in their committing suicide is the trauma of transient relationships," referring to the easily dissolvable friendships based on social networking sites like Facebook.

According to the Daily Mail, last Monday, 18-year-old Keeley Houghton became the first Briton to actually be jailed for cyber-bullying after she threatened to kill fellow teenager Emily Moore this past July. Houghton, who had previously been convicted twice of intimidating Moore, posted, "Keeley is going to murder the *****" on Facebook. Authorities charged Houghton with harassment. Houghton pled guilty and was sentenced to three months in a juvenile detention facility.

Teen Gossip Site Shut Down

Teen Gossip Site Shut DownCyber-bullying is nothing new. In fact almost as long as there has been an Internet, there have been people cold enough to use it for public mocking and abuse. Although it's one thing to post mean things on MySpace or harass someone via IM, it's yet another when there is a site that is essentially completely dedicated to anonymous cyber-bullying.

PeoplesDirt.com has been shut down twice since December for various reasons, including misrepresentation to advertisers. But the bigger problem for PeoplesDirt.com (which is again offline) is the content of the site. The bulletin board is broken down by state, then by county, and then by high school, and encourages anonymous visitors to post gossip about anyone they wish, without fear of reprisal.

The most recent take down was the result of an investigation started by the Maryland Attorney General. A former student at Walt Whitman High School used the site to post death threats, and parents and school faculty have complained about it repeatedly. A quick Google search for the site turn up plenty of news coverage and blog posts about the racist, homophobic, and just plain mean things posted on it.

Walt Whitman Principal, Alan Goodwin, told the Maryland Gazette he was happy to hear the site had been shut down. But many are concerned that this is only a temporary calm and that PeoplesDirt or a site just like it will be back online in no time. [From: WCBD, Your4State, Gazette.Net]

Model Takes on Cyberbully, and Google

Top-paid models may have luxurious, pampered lives, but they are also frequently targeted by bitter, jealous cretins.

Take for example Canadian model Liskula Cohen. She has been targeted by a cyber-bully for, well, being a beautiful, successful model, CBS News reports. We will assume for now that the person who created the Google-hosted blog Skanks in NYC has none of the aforementioned attributes. The site consists of insults directed at Cohen and unflattering, personal pictures of her. That is the only point of the blog from what we can tell, aside from proving that the person responsible has a dull life.

Cohen has asked Google to reveal the identity of the cyber-sissy to no avail. Google maintains that unless directed by a court order or subpoena, it will not release any user's personal information.

We realize that the luxurious lifestyles of others may be hard to take sometimes, but come on. Get a life. [From: CBS News]

Woman Faces Criminal Charges for Sending Threatening Texts to Teen

According to the Associated Press, 21-year-old Nicole Williams faces criminal charges after sending vulgar and threatening text messages to a 17 year-old girl. She is one of the first in Missouri to be charged under the state's cyber-bullying law. The law was created in response to the 2006 suicide of 13 year-old Megan Meier.

According to the charges, Williams left voice and text messages on the girl's cell phone after she heard rumors that her boyfriend had a "physical encounter" with the younger girl. The messages include not only vulgar and lewd language, but also threats of physical violence, including rape. Williams claims the messages were sent by others from her phone.

Seriously? Nicole, you're 21. Break up with your boyfriend, leave the high school kid alone. [From: AOL News]

Cyber-Bullying Takes on New Dimensions

It used to be that so called cyber-bullying merely meant harassing someone via instant message or saying mean things on MySpace, but online bullying is increasingly becoming a full-on public multimedia blitz of photos, videos, and fake user profiles.

Take for example the case of Ricky Alatorre, a 16 year-old with plenty of book smarts, but not a whole lot of friends. Someone snapped a picture of Ricky in English class and put together a fake MySpace profile called "The Rictionary." The profile claims that Ricky "loves" dictionaries and is gay (he's not). Ricky has been picked on since kindergarten, but was particularly affected by the mock profile. The public nature of the mocking multiplied the sting of the school yard taunts.

Sites like MySpace and YouTube have added a whole new weapon to the arsenal of bullies. These online assaults often lead to real world consequences including fights and suicide. We think it's important for parents to take action not only if they think their child is the victim of bullying, but also if their child is the bully in question. [Source: USA Today]
