GM Proposes Standardized Plug for Electric Vehicles

Say what you will about General Motors (okay, so maybe you should say it under your breath), but there's no denying the brilliance of this idea. On the company's FastLane blog, one Gery Kissel explains that engineers and suits will be meeting up next week to discuss the standardization of common components that will hopefully be installed in forthcoming electric vehicles. Notably, the SAE J1772 Task Force will be responsible for designing a plug that links each plug-in vehicle to an "ecosystem," ensuring that drivers can pull into any charging station from Key West to Neah Bay and see a socket that fits their ride. Specifically, the group is being charged with defining a "common electric vehicle conductive charging system architecture for all major automakers in North America," but it remains to be seen if said standard can be hammered out before the Volt's not-to-be-missed 2010 introduction.

Jay Leno Drives Chevy Volt, and He Likes It

Jay Leno loves cars and owns over 80 of them. When he voices an opinion on the matter, we tend to listen, so it was good to hear him talk about the much-hyped Chevrolet Volt.

Leno, who performed a free comedy show at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit this past Monday, also got a chance to test drive the Volt. After his visit, Leno had this to say to the Detroit News about the floundering auto company: "GM's not bankrupt yet! I was there today actually, [sic] I saw a lot of good product." The tone invoked by Leno is not surprising. Even before Leno's trip to Detroit, AutoBlogGreen found him lavishing praise on GM's new green car, saying, "I think it will be great. I think you'll find that the Volt will be a superior package to the Prius."

Let's hope he's right. In a sense, the Chevy Volt is an automotive symbol of renewed American intentions and ambitions. We would hate to be disappointed. [From: The Detroit News Via: AutoBlogGreen]

Chevy Volt Charging Into San Francisco and DC

If General Motors has anything to say about it, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. will be the first early adopter markets for its plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt. The company is currently working with the local municipalities to flesh out the details. The goal is to make tax incentives for purchasing electric cars and build an infrastructure that'll support them. San Francisco is already part of the way there since they, along with San Jose and Oakland, have already endorsed Better Place's $1 billion plan to put electric grids in the Bay Area. Of course, GM's deeds aren't exactly selfless -- after all, more markets mean more potential Volt customers -- but if this is what it takes to foster an eerily silent rush hour, we're all for it. Chevy Volt to Make 'Star Trek' Sound Effects

While gear-head environmentalists prepare to forego the internally combusted symphonies that get their hearts pumping for the sake of a greener and quieter planet of electric cars, some folks at GM are thinking up some... interesting ways to bring new, "highly technical" sounds back into the picture. The Volt, which is intended to run silently much of the time, will apparently be the recipient of some sci-fi-sourced effects; GM's E-Flex Global Vehicle Line Executive Frank Weber saying to expect noises like "when on Spaceship Enterprise you hear the doors close, or use the transporter."

That he didn't know it's actually the Starship Enterprise doesn't give us much hope for anything more than what happens when a 10-year-old figures out how to customize sounds in their computers -- random, irritating blats from the speakers whenever you touch anything. [Via Autoblog]

Chevy Volt Hits the Road, Video Style

The Chevy Volt had its big debut last week, and although the official pictures were far cooler than those leaked dudes-in-suits shots we saw a while ago, there's something about this slow-motion video of the all-electric-drive car in motion accompanied by some soaring Coldplay that pulls at our jaded heartstrings -- now if Chevy would just add in one of those fake engine sounds audio systems, we'd be in heaven. GM's Chevy Volt Finally Really Unveiled, For Real

The 2011 Chevy Volt has been officially unveiled this morning and we are pleased to note that the new pictures are much more flattering than the "glamour shots" released a week or so ago. The interior of the Volt features a driver-configurable LCD instrument display, 7-inch touch screen information display (for climate and "infotainment" control), Bluetooth, USB and optional GPS. Of course, what makes this vehicle noteworthy is the sheer plug-in-hybridness of it all: the car runs entirely off of its 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery. For trips up to 40 miles, the battery's initial charge will suffice (granted you remembered to plug it in overnight). After the battery is spent, the gasoline generator provides electricity to the Volt's electric drive unit while simultaneously sustaining the charge of the battery for a range of "several hundred additional miles," according to GM. Hit the read links for far more info. and check out a drool-worthy interior photo after the break.

33,000 Sign Up to Buy Plug-In Chevy Volt, But They Won't Pay Full Price

33,000 Line Up to Buy Volt, But GM May Be Asking for Too MuchThere is some good news and bad news for General Motors (GM). The struggling auto manufacturer seems to be resting all of its hopes for survival on its plug-in hybrid Volt, due to be released in 2010. The good news? Over 33,000 have already signed up on an unofficial waiting list to get their hand on the vehicle. The bad news: The average price these very overzealous fans are willing to pay: $31,299.02, much less than the anticipated $40,000 GM sticker price.

GM is going to have to drum up significantly more interest from consumers with deeper pockets if it hopes its much hyped hybrid will save the company. [Source: AP via Propeller ]

GM Prepping Electric Car for 2010

GM Prepping Petrol-Powered Electric Car for 2010We've reported on a number of eco-friendly car concepts in the past, like Nissan's electric Mixim and that supposed Ford Escort plug-in hybrid that, unfortunately, turned out to be a bogus rumor. Neither of those two is a reality, but GM's latest concept is different. Company vice-chairman Bob Lutz says GM is ready to stop playing around and fully intends to release its electric car, called Volt, for sale in late 2010.

However, that electric car moniker requires a bit of a caveat here, as the Volt will actually have a small gas-powered engine nestled inside. But, unlike hybrids which use complicated transmissions to enable both the gas and electric motors to drive the wheels, the Volt will act more like a WWII diesel submarine. The gas engine will simply be run as a generator, re-charging the batteries after they're depleted, something that's expected to happen roughly every 40 miles. The process is similar to how Honda's FCX Clarity will operate, but that car requires hydrogen which is available at only a handful of pumps across the nation. That said, Honda's car, set to debut in 2008 on a very limited release, will emit zero emissions thanks to its fuel cell technology. The Volt will still produce some carbon emissions thanks to its (albeit limited) use of gasoline.

It's unknown at this point just how many miles the car will be able to travel with both full batteries and a full gas tank, and the critical question of cost is also still in the air. The styling is certainly better than most electric concepts if a bit fender-heavy and slab-sided. Regardless, we're happy to see an American auto maker challenge itself like this instead of blowing its budget on commercials to convince shoppers how "fuel efficient" their 20-something MPG cars are.
