Bidding for Tour of Bill Gates's Home Begins at $35,000

Have you ever wanted a personal tour of a celebrity home? We're talking full-blown, 'MTV Cribs' style. Well, if you're a Microsoft employee with a fat wallet, that dream can become a reality. According to Tech Flash, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates is auctioning off a personal tour of his gigantic house on Lake Washington as part of a yearly charity campaign within the company. Just how much would this VIP tour set you back? Well, the current high bid is $35,000. To put that in perspective, the same tour, which includes appetizers at the end, sold for just $8,600 last year. Looks like the recession might be over... at least for the people in the Pacific Northwest.

Since not everybody works for Microsoft (or can drop that much cash), US News & World Report will take you on a virtual tour of the Gates household. You can click on different parts of the house and read interesting facts. But it must pale in comparison to the real thing. After all, you can't peek inside the Gates medicine cabinet on a virtual tour.

Alas, the closest we'll get to this house is a view from an airplane or boat. Seriously, you're more likely to have a beer with President Obama than you are to get an audience with the notoriously private Gates. [From: Tech Flash and US News & World Report]

Man's Criticism of Actor Stephen Fry Draws the Wrath of Tweeters

These days, more verbal smackdowns take place on Twitter than do at junior high schools. Of course, these might go unnoticed if the people involved weren't, in many cases, celebrities. Some of these "Twitter Wars" are funny, but some feuds get downright nasty. But it's not just celebrity-on-celebrity disputes that are taking place in the Twitterverse. The beauty of the site is the ability for an average Joe to directly communicate with famous folks -- for better or worse.

For example, a man from Birmingham, England named Richard (who tweets as brumplum) recently posted what he thought was an innocuous tweet about Brit writer and actor Stephen Fry, only to see it result in a social-networking firestorm. According to The New York Times, it read, "Much as I admire and adore the chap, they are a bit ... boring," in reference to Fry's musings. Not only did many of Fry's 934,000 followers respond to Richard's tweet (Celebrity Alan Davies called Richard a "moron."), but Fry even posted a tweet about possibly quitting the micro-blogging service because of the remark. In the end, both men apologized. Fry still tweets, and Richard has more followers than ever.

All is well that ends well, we guess. But what does this spat prove? Twitter isn't a place for the faint of heart. Our advice for sensitive celebs: if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. [From: The New York Times]

Adult Care Bear and Balloon Boy Among Popular Costume Searches

If you've ever dressed up for Halloween, you've probably bumped into someone at a party or bar who's wearing the same costume as you. From experience, we can say it's a deflating feeling. While the holiday is practically upon us, you might want to quickly scan this list of popular costume searches before you head out into the night.

What costumes are in this year? Well, CNET News reports dead celebrities, anything sexy, and cartoon characters are among October's more popular Web search terms -- with Michael Jackson and Balloon Boy taking the top honors. Judging from that list, you'll see plenty of people Saturday night who are wearing single gloves and fedoras, skimpy sailor uniforms, and sexy Care Bear suits. Now, that's truly scary! In case those costumes don't strike your fancy, there are geekier options out there, too.

LockerBlogger Gives Fans Inside Access to Their Sports Heroes

In the sports world, some have been extremely receptive to the social networking explosion, while others have adamantly opposed the likes of Twitter and Facebook. No matter which side of the fence you're on, there's no denying this trend has given fans more access to their favorite athletes than ever before. Hoping to satisfy fans' endless cravings, a new Web site, essentially an amalgamation of various social networking sites, has launched today.

Although its primary function is to compile, LockerBlogger does have a feather in its hat that other sites do not. According to Mashable, more than 140 athletes, including NFL star Dwight Freeney, NBA star Jason Kidd, and former MLB star Darryl Strawberry, have agreed to communicate with fans via the site. Just how will this communication work? Well, there's a number of ways. Each participating athlete creates a "locker" that features a blog, photo gallery, status updates (called "shouts"), and a designated space where fans can post comments. Of course, there's also direct-messaging capabilities and discussion forums.

There's nothing revolutionary about the site. In fact, it's similar to other sports sites we've told you about, except that LockerBlogger puts all the content in one place. As a result, fans don't have to follow links to multiple sites if they want to know what their sports hero ate for lunch, or see a highlight of a sick slam dunk. We're rooting for this underdog. We'd hate to see any league officials ban it as they have Twitter, if for no other reason than not wanting to see Chad Ochocinco upset. [From: Mashable]

'Tweance' Lets You Talk to Dead Celebrities on Twitter!

This has been a tough year to be famous. The wildfire rash of celebrity deaths in 2009 left many fans too disillusioned, despondent, and depressed to consider a future without Michael Jackson or Billy Mays. This Halloween, though, we can all lay off the Prozac or barbituate cocktails for one night and huddle around the warm fire of Twitter, where a psychic will pretend to make contact with our deceased demi-gods.

On October 30th, in what The Sun has dubbed the world's first (but hopefully not the last) "online séance," world-renowned psychic Jayne Wallace will perch on Twitter and speak with four dead celebrities, the identities of whom are to be selected by the Twittering public. During this "Tweance," Wallace, who claims to have possessed clairvoyant powers since the tender age of seven, will live-tweet her interviews with the chosen stars between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Halloween Eve. (The Tweance account, by total coincidence, is also promoting a Halloween costume store in the U.K. Spooky.)

'Brady Bunch' Star Launches Tech Support Hotline for Baby Boomers

In her role as the gentle matriarch of 'The Brady Bunch,' Florence Henderson served as a model for parents in the Baby Boomer generation, the first in American history to deal extensively with divorce, remarriage, and stepchildren. Bringing old-fashioned values to bear on the changing social landscape of the '70s, Henderson did a lot more as Carol Brady than to simply provide corny jokes and re-run fodder. Now, according to the New York Times, she's aiming to bring that same generation into the 21st century with her FloH Club.

"I didn't grow up with technology," Henderson explained to the Times. "It's like learning a new language." And learned a new language she has; Ms. Brady is now an active user of text messaging, Facebook, and Skype. Knowing firsthand the hurdles standing between the Baby Boom and the Tech Boom, she decided to start the FloH Club -- a tech support service aimed squarely at adults. "It's like roadside assistance for computers," she further explains. Staffed by professionals who are screened for their patience and ability to speak plain English, the FloH Club's telephone hotline is up and running seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. Eastern time. For $25 a month, or $250 a year, members can get guidance on anything from HDMI cables to HTML code.

Lil' Wayne's Xbox Is Much Cooler Than Yours

Despite the spectacular bling, the hardcore tats, and the intimidating, unflinching glares, hip-hop stars can geek out just like the rest of us. In its most recent focus on 'Celebrity Nerds,' Engadget discovered that Lil' Wayne, in an interview with Gamertag Radio, revealed a little tidbit that will make him the envy of Xbox owners everywhere.

During the gathering, the star admitted to owning a tricked-out Xbox that has movies, every game from "A to Z," and -- amazingly -- porn (Show us the way, Lil' Wayne!). One of the guys in the room, right on cue, chimed in with, "That's a real 'X' box." You got that right; it's probably perfect for Wayne's tour bus. Now, that rigged-up NES, duct-taped to a black and white TV in our creepy band van, just seems even more incredibly lame. [From: Gamertag Radio, via Engadget]

Tracy Morgan Finally on Twitter, Weird as Ever

After a lengthy citizen's campaign clamoring for his membership, Tracy Morgan has finally decided to join Twitter. That's right, kids. You can make a difference. Your opinion does matter. Your voice is being heard. So long as it pertains to inane stuff like TV stars and Twitter.

Celebrity site OMGICU heavily promoted the cause for Morgan's Twittership, and the idea soon caught fire, spawning its own spin-off site. HuffPo now reports that the former 'SNL' comedian and '30 Rock' regular has caved into the demands of the masses, and has allowed us a glimpse into the three-ring circus that is his mind. Though he's just a few tweets into what we hope will be a career of Cal Ripken-esque longevity, he's already come up with a few gems. After his inaugural tweet, where he welcomed everyone to "Tracy's World," the self-titled "Black Svengali" wasted no time in comparing certain choice aspects of his anatomy to 'Star Wars' characters.

Drew Carey Ups Twitter Name Bid to $1 Million

Earlier in the week we told of Drew Carey's promise to put $100,000 towards the LiveStrong Foundation in exchange for the Twitter name @Drew, if he were to amass 100,000 followers by November 9th. The Twitter handle in question is owned by one Drew Olanoff, who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and has effectively donated his user name to Lance Armstrong's cancer-fighting fund. Well, according to Mashable, Armstrong, Olanoff, and cancer-haters everywhere will be pleased to learn that Carey has thrown yet more money into the pot.

In a conversation with CBS News yesterday (video after the break), Carey promised that, if his current account (@DrewFromTV) were to boast 1 million followers by midnight, December 31st, 2009, he would donate a staggering $1 million to the Livestrong Foundation. (We don't really understand why he's trying to attract followers to a Twitter name he presumably plans on ditching, but we'll hold our tongues.) After all, it is one million dollars. He also explained that he would donate gradated amounts; for instance, if he were to reach 500,000 followers, he'd donate $500,000. Are you still reading this? Will you follow the dude already?! DJ AM's Death Reveals Twitter's Spooky Side

Twitter has limitless possibilities, and with the numerous celebrity deaths this past summer, micro-blogging has been flush with messages of condolences and mourning. DJ AM, aka Adam Goldstein, died of an apparent drug overdose on Friday, and his famous friends have taken to expressing their grief via Twitter. Travis Barker, to whom many are looking due to the famous plane crash both survived last year, wrote, "Rest In Peace my brother, this really f**ks me up." Ashton Kutcher, Ryan Seacrest, Heidi Montag, Lindsay Lohan, and John Mayer have also chimed in on the site, proving that AM was a popular DJ with the Hollywood crowd.

Yet, it's Goldstein's own Twitter account that is garnering the most attention, due to his final tweet, which pulled an eerily suggestive lyric from a Grandmaster Flash song: "New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems." AM was an avid tweeter, but his account slowed around August 25th, three days before he was found dead. Since the announcement, many have re-tweeted his message in support.

Public figures seem to be tweeting more and more in order to broadcast their ideas and messages. By the same token, their followers feel more in tune with their thoughts than ever, which means, when a tweeting celebrity like DJ AM dies, the entire Twitter-sphere is a bit shaken. Especially when his last tweet seems to know something his adoring public doesn't. [From: Mashable, TMZ, and Gawker]

Britney Spears Selling Virtual 'Gifts' on Facebook

When Facebook gifts displaying cute puppies and baby penguins can no longer satisfy your lust for online treacle, you can always kick it up a notch and give Britney Spears. Yes, leave it to the former boa-constrictor-wearing, Madonna-kissing pop queen to plaster her likeness on the social networking site's virtual gifts.

According to TechCrunch, the collection of Britney-themed gifts were designed by Susan Kare, who designed the original Macintosh logo. (How the mighty have fallen.) Of course, someone has to profit from this venture, so the folks at Paidcontent.org asked both Spears and Facebook where the money will go. They didn't receive an answer. The gifts cost $2 each, while most other Facebook gifts cost $1 or are free of charge. In case you missed Spears's countless proclamations of being 'back,' you can check out her Facebook fan page, which has almost 2 million members.

Jay Leno Replaces Old Car Parts Using 3-D Printer

Though still not priced at a mass consumer level, 3-D printing is a real technology that's currently being used by everyone from military surgeons to architects. The ability to produce rapid physical prototypes of just about any object is particularly useful for car collector Jay Leno, because broken parts of old cars are impossible to replace due to their age. A machinist could attempt to craft a new piece by hand, but the process is not only costly, it's also lacks the precision needed for such parts.

In a story for Popular Mechanics, Leno details the process and benefits of printing new car parts and molds, and made a video with a live demonstration. What's more fascinating than printed, unmoving car parts, though, is the crescent wrench that Jay makes: the wheel that closes and opens the wrench actually moves and works just like it should, straight from the printer.

If you want to print your own car parts, or perhaps some 'World of Warcraft' figurines, you'll need both a 3D scanner and the printer itself. The models used by Leno are the NextEngine 3D Scanner and the Dimension uPrint Personal 3D Printer, and cost $2995 and $15,000, respectively. Sure, it's still pretty pricey, but when you consider the fact that this technology cost hundreds of thousands of dollars just a few years ago, it shouldn't be too long before we see 3D printers at our local Best Buy. Sarah Palin Impersonated on Twitter, Site Institutes 'Verified' Status

Sarah Palin may be receiving a surge of new friends on Facebook, but she's not getting quite the same warm welcome over on Twitter, where dozens of fake Sarah Palins tweet away. "Unfortunately fake 'Gov Sarah Palin' twitter sites r doing their thing today, So sorry if u recv false info @ fake site," Palin tweeted in response to the plethora of Palin impersonators.

According to Bloomberg, accounts like "hockeymom64" and "ExGovSarahPalin" are tweeting false information, but Palin is hardly the only one battling against a sea of fake accounts. Many famous Twitterers have fallen victim to fakesters and account hackers. This is truly troublesome, particularly considering -- like it or not -- the significant, underground news source that Twitter has become. How can the truth prevail?

"Twitter does need to strengthen its notion of identity as it plays a greater role in the public conversation, if it wants to have impact," Gartner Inc. research analyst Ray Valdes told Bloomberg.

Fortunately, Twitter has introduced a new feature that "verifies" those oft-impersonated celebrities -- but only accounts, not the tweets themselves. Sarah Palin gets a cute little check-mark on her Twitter page, but there's nothing she can do to rid the site of impostors. So before you praise or damn the next thing she says, make sure it really comes from her mouth...er, fingers. [From: Bloomberg]

Rick Astley Still Alive: Celebrity Death Hoaxes Sweeping Twitter

Pop culture was hit hard last week with the deaths of Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, and Michael Jackson. If you believe everything you read on Twitter, though, many more well known personalities have died lately. Sadly, the passing of OxiClean pitchman Billy Mays was verified, but the purported deaths of Britney Spears, Jeff Goldblum, Harrison Ford, Miley Cyrus, George Clooney, and, most recently, Rick Astley are all without merit.

According to The Telegraph, the '80s pop singer Rick Astley was the latest name to be thrown into the death pool. But the smooth-jam-slinging chanteur is still just as alive as his RickRolling 'Never Gonna Give You Up' Web phenomenon. According to StarPulse, Astley's rep assured the public that the singer didn't die in a Berlin hotel room (as was falsely reported), and is still scheduled to perform in Denmark later this week.

Lindsay Lohan Posts Topless Pics on Twitter

Lindsay Lohan, your attempts at class and grace outshine even the most jaded of bloggers' expectations.

That picture that you took of yourself, topless, at a Fornarina shoot (we wonder if it's the same one that produced this exceptionally weird video) and then posted on Twitter this past Monday struck us as a piece of art. Don't worry; Samantha Ronson knows what she's missing.

With those extensions, the vacant look, even how large your BlackBerry looks in your skinny little hand, you know can do better than her. And the uninterested guy behind you looks like he knows it, too. For the record, you won us over in the refreshing teen comedy 'Mean Girls,' so we're sorry your boredom has reduced you to posting old pictures of yourself on one of the largest social networking sites in the world. Don't worry, though. Your movie career will pick up soon. [From: Seattlepi.com]
