Windows 7 Barred from Georgetown Campus

Georgetown Barrs Students from Using WIndows 7
Geeks around the world are having a field day playing with the beta version of the new Windows 7 that Microsoft has decided to share with the public. At one school, however, the tinkerers and tech nerds are being left out in the cold.

Students and faculty at Georgetown University have been barred by the school's IT staff from downloading and using the Windows 7 beta. The official warning states, "Installing any beta version of software is extremely risky," and could disable anti-virus software or cause peripherals (such as printers) to function improperly.

Of course, this ban is only for school-owned PCs, and the school will support Windows 7 when it is officially released. If students want to risk their personal laptops, that's their own business. Our friends at Engadget have not had too many major issues with the Windows 7 Beta, so we think you're pretty safe. [From: InformationWeek]

Fonolo Lets You Skip Automated Phone Menus

Our time is valuable, and there is nothing more maddening than spending it wading through automated phone menus. That's why we are excited by Fonolo, a new Web service that allows you to bypass those menus and hop straight to where you want to be. According to the Fonolo site copy, this new convenience is known as "deep dialing."

Here's how it works: After creating a profile with your phone number, you can search a large list of companies (379, at current count). After finding the one you want, the site provides you with a visual representation of the automated menu, complete with a script of what the machine will be saying at a particular level of the menu ("if you feel like giving up now, press 1"), and gives you the option of placing a call to any level of the system. The service then dials the company and navigates to where you've selected, then calls your phone and connects the calls.

Get Early, Free Access to Video Games & Sites

InviteShare Opening Closed BetasIn the world of closed betas, test versions of pre-release applications and games that are only open to a select few, it's all about who you know. Back when GMail first launched, for example, the only way to get an account was to have a friend who already had one. Users were given a precious ration of invites that they could send to whoever they liked. These became highly desired and a whole virtual marketplace sprang up trading GMail invites among friends and strangers, with some who were totally unconnected even resorting to eBay to buy a precious "in." That'll all change with a new site called InviteShare, a service that makes it easy to trade beta invites with others.

At the (somewhat busy-looking) site, you sign up for the betas you're interested in and list the betas you have invites for. By sharing invites, you gain priority on those invites you're looking to receive, meaning you're more likely to get into the beta of whatever the hot new app everyone happens to be fawning over today. But even if you have nothing to share at first, you're likely to be able to get in on something cool and limited, which you can then brag to your friends about -- assuming any of them even know or care what pre-release tools like Pownce or Skitch are.

Taste Halo 3 in May

Word comes straight from Microsoft that Halo 3, one of the most eagerly awaited games in history, will be playable in pre-release form on May 16th at exactly 5:00 AM Pacific time for a duration of just a few weeks, ending on June 6th at 11:59 pm. This will be a beta of the game, meaning it may still have bugs. In addition, only a very limited number of (likely) very eager gamers will be allowed to play it. Unfortunately, it's probably too late to get in on the action:The most common way for folks to get in on this deal was to have purchased an early copy of Crackdown, which included unlock codes, though some other gamers got lucky after signing up on Halo 3's website and got a code that way.

The beta will be playable online only and will feature three maps: Snowbound, High Ground and Valhalla. These apparently are on the larger side, which means they'll have plenty of room for some massive gunfights. If you missed the boat, don't worry: There's a high-def, behind-the-scenes trailer available for download today online and via Xbox Live Marketplace. After all, watching video of others play is just as fun as playing yourself, right? It's at least better than waiting for the official release of the game, sometime later this year.
