Stephen Colbert Given "Webby Person of the Year" Award

For quite some time, if you Googled "Greatest Living American" and hit "I'm Feeling Lucky" you'd be redirected to faux-pundit Stephen Colbert's page. Colbert achieved that status thanks to asking his legion of fans to "Google Bomb" his name with that term, posting it everywhere possible to increase his ratings. He no longer has that honor, thanks to another would-be who is bribing people with free software if they link to him instead, but Colbert has had an undeniable presence online, and now he's getting some official recognition from the Webby awards.

The Webbys Awards is an annual celebration of online culture; an Oscar for the Internet, if you will. Colbert is to be given the Webby Person of the Year award, granted, because of his skillful use (or exploitation) of the Web. In addition to Google Bombing, Colbert dominated his own Wikipedia page and managed to get thousands to donate at DonorsChoose.org.

Other winners this year include a lifetime achievement award for David Bowie, while Flickr's hardcore fanbase won the Community award. And, in the Weird category, the winner is our favorite LOLCat hub, I Can Has Cheezburger. [Source: Webby Awards via CNN]

iPhone Named Time's "Invention of the Year"

iPhone Named 'Invention of the Year'Ahh, the iPhone. Winner of hearts, creator of long lines, and possible media brainwasher. If you don't believe that last point, take a look a this: 'Time Magazine' has made the iPhone its "Invention Of The Year".

'Time' claimed its number one reason for selecting the iconic touch-screen mobile was because "it's pretty," despite the iPhone really being nothing more than a muted black slab with a chrome back and a front typically covered in smudges. This apparently was enough to beat out other, seemingly more important inventions, like a deployable shield that could save the lives of helicopter pilots, and an inflatable antenna that could help bring connectivity to otherwise inaccessible places.

But let's remember that 'Time' doesn't always make the most seemingly logical choices when naming its "Of The Year" awards, since the magazine seems to generally rely on the person or product that made the most noise in the media rather than the thing that actually had the most impact in our lives. And, when this award is looked at from that perspective, it's hard to think of any other invention that wooed the hearts of TV pundits and tech scribes everywhere -- whether rightly or wrongly.

Big Awards, Tiny Speeches

Big Awards, Tiny SpeechesThe 11th annual Webby Awards were recently handed out in New York City, providing pats on the backs in more than 100 categories to the very best productions on the Web. This year's winners ran the gamut from eBay and YouTube to David Bowie and the Beastie Boys. In a nice break from traditional award ceremony orations, it's mandated that Webby acceptance speeches be mercifully short -- limited to just five words. Here's a sampling of the best ones:

  • "Don't believe everything you hear." - Factcheck (Best Politics)
  • "Fat cats need watch dogs." - OpenSecrets (Best Politics - People's Voice)
  • "Can anyone fix my computer?" - The Beastie Boys, (Artists of the Year)
  • "Have sex, make more kids." - Nick.com (Best Youth)
  • "Now let's get hammered." - DIYNetwork.com (Best Lifestyle)
  • "Thanks Mom. Whoever you are." - Clearification (Best Branded Content - People's Voice)

Though, Lifetime Achievement Award winner, David Bowie, had a bit of trouble sticking to the rules:

  • "I only get five words? Sh*t, that was five. Four more there. That's three. Two."
