A recent survey conducted by Logitech has confirmed what we've all long known: that, if you've lost your TV remote, it's probably between the couch cushions. In fact, there's a 49-percent chance it's there. Tied for the second most likely hiding place are the bathroom and a dresser drawer.
Science Proves That the Remote Is Stuck Under the Cushion originally appeared on Switched on Sat, 26 Mar 2011 12:00:00 EST. Very fast in fact. So, how do you react to an inkjet printer that pumps out between 60 and 70 pages per minute? We think the proper response is stunned silence. Memjet's new inkjet printer tech is able to spray a page with ink in a single pass, rather than having to travel across the page several times to produce an image. At CES, the company announced that it had finally found partners to put its ultra-fast inkjet tech into actual printers. In China, Lenovo will manufacture printers with the tech. Meanwhile, it will be WEP in India, and Kpowerscience in Taiwan. American and European partners have not been announced yet, but we can't imagine they'll be far behind. When you see the video below you'll understand why: who wouldn't want to sell these printers?
Continue reading Memjet Bringing Its Mind-Bogglingly Fast Printers to Market

Memjet Bringing Its Mind-Bogglingly Fast Printers to Market originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 07 Jan 2011 17:15:00 EST. It's been pretty obvious since day one that Boxee envisioned its software running on a variety of devices, and that the D-Link Boxee Box was just the beginning. Now Iomega (of Zip Drive fame) wants in on the burgeoning streaming media box market and, instead of flocking to Google TV, it picked the upstarts at Boxee to power its new line of Iomega TV devices.

Though the outward design is decidedly un-Boxee like (the Iomega TV looks more or less like a USB hard drive) inside you'll find essentially the same components as the Boxee Box, including an Atom processor. The Iomega TV even comes with a remote control that sports a QWERTY keyboard. The $229.99 base model is not terribly different from the Boxee Box outside of its appearance. But things get interesting when you spring for one of the slightly higher priced models that packs either a 1TB or 2TB hard drive (for $299.99 and $349.99, respectively). Your Iomega TV can then act as a networked drive where you can dump all your movies and television shows and have them play back locally. And, as we discovered already, Boxee can play back practically any file you throw at it. The Iomega TV with Boxee will go on sale in the next few months at J&R.
Iomega Partners With Boxee, Enters Streaming Media Market originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 04 Jan 2011 00:01:00 EST. Companies are working hard to change the perception of active-shutter 3-D specs as bulky and unsightly, so it comes as no surprise that Samsung enlisted design firm Silhouette to create the world's lightest 3-D frames. The glasses, which weigh 28 grams (about 0.06 pounds), house all of the electronics in compartments at the back, charge wirelessly and turn on and off automatically by detecting when 3-D content is being played.
Samsung Debuts World's Lightest Active 3-D Glasses, Still Look Dorky originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 03 Jan 2011 11:00:00 EST. (That's not even counting your roommate or significant other's contributions.) For overwhelmed sockets, we'd recommend the satisfying iHome iB970B, a universal charging dock that can handle up to four devices at a time. One of the three dedicated Apple docks can even host an iPad with the included stand, and a padded rest will hold whatever USB device you want to connect. Incredibly, the station includes cables and adapters for a host of common Nintendo and Sony devices. One will even hook the charger directly to your computer, so that one of your iDevices can sync to iTunes while it's sipping sweet power. Consider it the one charger to rule them all.
At a press conference today, Verizon officially unveiled plans for its new 4G LTE (long term evolution) network. On December 5th, the new, speedier network will go live in 38 metropolitan areas, including New York, Chicago, Seattle and, perhaps in time for CES, Las Vegas. The first two devices to take advantage of the new data network will be a pair of 4G USB modems: the LG VL600 and the Pantech UML290, which will sell for $99 with a two-year contract after a $50 rebate. The two laptop dongles will be able to connect to either the LTE network or Verizon's existing 3G EVDO network. Verizon claims that 4G users can expect real-world download speeds (between five and 12 megabits per second), and upload speeds between two and five megabits. Going by more conservative estimates, that's about four times as fast as the company's EVDO Rev. A network. Data plans for the new service are quite pricey, though; $50 per month nets you a five-gigabyte plan, while $80 nabs you 10 gigs per month. Both call for $10 per-GB overage charges.

Sadly, we'll have to wait to find out about Verizon's "consumer-oriented devices" (read: phones) till CES.
Verizon's High-Speed 4G LTE Network Goes Live on December 5th originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 01 Dec 2010 15:16:00 EST. Networks, bandwidth and capabilities are varied enough within any given country (as will be confirmed by anyone who's tried to get an iPhone on Verizon), but they're an entirely new mess when you start crossing borders. So, if you plan on staying connected without bankrupting yourself, you might want to see if your phone can handle the trip -- and make sure you aren't signing away your first-born simply by turning it on.
First, we have a couple quick rules. if your phone is from Verizon or Sprint, there is a small likelihood of it being internationally compatible. Both use CDMA technology for their 3G networks, instead of the more widely supported GSM. (If you're concerned about globe-hopping, look for phones billed as "global ready" or "international." Unless your phone is labeled as such, you're probably out of luck.) T-Mobile and AT&T use GSM, and are more likely to get basic calling and texting while traveling abroad (unless you are going to Canada, which is pretty U.S.-friendly.) Double-checking by looking at your service provider's website is a great bet. Another option, if you would rather have your phone on a more regular basis, is to purchase a prepaid SIM card within the country in which you've landed. You won't keep your number, but you won't rack up roaming charges, either. In the worst-case scenario, a disposable cell phone works as well, and is much more "accepted" overseas than it is in the U.S. (probably due to the influx of travelers).
Continue reading Tech Traveling Tips: Avoid Roaming While Roaming Freely

Tech Traveling Tips: Avoid Roaming While Roaming Freely originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 19:00:00 EST. Once you're across the seas, you'll start snapping photos, turning up your MP3 player, and blogging your adventures -- that is, until you run out of juice. Buying converters in the airport is always über-expensive, and being stuck without one when you need it is hair-pulling. Not sure if you should make the investment? Remember that voltage varies in different continents, and, if you have an electronic made for America (i.e., 110 volts), the 220-volt sockets found abroad could deliver quite a shock to your device. A converter makes sure that no excess electricity comes through.

Those wacky symbols you see on the wall in Deutschland? They aren't native markings; that's what the locals call a "socket." Plugs vary from country to country, and, to make sure you can insert your cord in the right way, you'll want an adapter. Adapter/converter packages, like the Travel Smart by Conair, are usually ideal. For a helpful, all-in-one guide, bookmark Current Solutions. Shocking, isn't it? (Hehe. Electricity puns.)
Tech Travel Tips: How to Keep Your Power Pumping originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 17:39:00 EST. Your tickets are booked. Your bags are packed. Your passport's been dusted off. It's finally time to take off for that exotic vacation you so sorely deserve, and to totally disconnect from the rest of the world... sort of.

Sure, you probably won't want to spend too much time trolling through e-mails instead of strolling across the Île Saint-Louis. If you're like us, though, you'll still probably toss a couple of gadgets into your suitcase -- if only to flood your friends' feeds with tweets, photos and Facebook posts from the other side of the world. But, before you start haphazardly dumping your smartphone, laptop and e-reader into your Samsonite, you should remember to take care of some very forgettable things.
Continue reading Traveling Abroad? A reader writes: I've taken to plugging my laptop into my HDTV when watching Hulu, streaming Netflix, or when I'm tired of squinting at my tiny screen. Unfortunately, I've discovered my arms are not long enough to reach the keyboard and touchpad when I'm laying on the couch. I need a wireless keyboard and mouse that will let me not only take charge of the Netflix queue, but also bang out an e-mail or two without having to leave the butt groove in my sofa. I don't want to spend a ton of cash, so Just Tell Me What To Get!

Dear reader: These days, each wireless keyboard and mouse combo is as unique as the humble snowflake, so your simple question sets up a hefty challenge. While a Bluetooth-input device offers more versatility and compatibility than does a device with an exclusively designed wireless dongle, such models are often more expensive and require some tinkering to get working. On the other hand, those that use proprietary wireless tech -- like Logitech's Unifying receiver system -- are usually cheaper than their Bluetooth counterparts, tend to work the moment they're plugged in, and don't suffer from the lag between key presses and on-screen actions that can affect budget Bluetooth solutions. That's why we suggest you save yourself the cash and hassle; pick up the Logitech MK520 set for a perfectly reasonable $59.99.
Continue reading Hook Yourself Up With the Best Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Under $100

Hook Yourself Up With the Best Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Under $100 originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 15:00:00 EST. If you were planning on traveling with a suitcase full of printer cartridges, we've got some bad news. The TSA has decided to ban printer and toner cartridges that weigh more than 16 ounces from both carry-on and checked luggage on all flights bound for U.S. destinations. But it shouldn't surprise you to learn of the new prohibition, considering the bomb scare two weeks ago. Explosive devices were found hidden inside large, office-style toner cartridges being shipped from Yemen. Those devices were, however, being transported on cargo planes, which are still allowed to carry the larger cartridges.

The U.S. isn't alone in its ban on the cartridges. Canada is also prohibiting printer cartridges from checked luggage, but is allowing domestic passengers to transport them in their carry-ons.
TSA Bans Large Printer Cartridges From Passenger Flights originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 12:45:00 EST. So my city is cracking down big time on driving while talking, but my kids call me to pick them up from school. I need to use my phone on-the-go. I'm going to breakdown and ask for some help with a solid, non-flashy Bluetooth headpiece. I don't want to be that lady muttering to herself, but safety first. Also, I am a complete ditz when it comes to recharging my devices, so I need something with good battery life. Please... Just Tell Me What To Get!

Ah, the old Bluetooth conundrum: to look a fool and be hands-free, or to balance your touch-screen on your greasy face while driving. Well, if you must go wireless, we've got a solution for you. When looking for a new Bluetooth headset, you want something that is comfortable, provides consistent sound quality (on both ends of the line), sports a solid battery life, and won't break while it's hopping between your ears, drawers, glove compartments and pockets. BlueAnt's T1 fits the bill, and can be found for less than $60 online. Most importantly, its clean, understated design means you won't feel like a goober when it's attached to the side of your head.
Solar power continues to gain traction as a viable energy source. Although the expensive technology still seems out of reach for most consumers, Logitech is installing the increasingly popular panels on a mainstream product. The company's new Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 sports a thin, one-third-inch profile, a series of ambient light solar panels (which can reportedly charge even indoors) and chiclet keys. The $80 model requires only one USB port, and, judging from the designated Windows key, seems to be tailored for PCs.

Engadget also ascertained that the K750, which arrives on the market next month, "can theoretically run for three months even if you leave it in a dark desk drawer." So, relax, there's no need to stress out about having to leave your dark, isolated dungeon in order to venture outside for keyboard rejuvenation.
If you're clumsy like us, you've probably bumped a USB drive loose from the computer at least once in your life. With luck, the files stored on it weren't damaged when this happened. But, rather than just hoping for good fortune, you'd be better off checking out the new USB hub from the consistently awesome designer, Quirky. Dubbed 'Contort,' the four-port hub and cord organizer sports a flexible neck that helps to prevent it from accidentally coming loose.

Contort is available for pre-order now, but, as with all Quirky concepts, you won't be able to receive the USB drive until enough people commit to buy. (Currently, 73 people out of the required 1,650 have committed.) If you really can't wait, though, you could always go to the library and "accidentally" knock loose everybody's USB drives, and then drop them a link to Quirky's site. That's viral marketing.
For some reason, Japanese scientists apparently hope to revolutionize the forgotten, fragrant industry by incorporating scent production with modern technology. Keio University researchers reportedly worked in conjunction with Canon to hack -- and stink up -- an ink-jet printer (because, you know, office printers aren't adequately infuriating already).

The group installed four aroma vials in place of the printer's ink cartridges, so that a fleeting aroma emerges when the machine is triggered. The scientists hope to eventually combine a standard ink-jet printer with image-recognition software and more vials, so that the printer can automatically match scents with pictures. The working prototype -- which can produce a variety of scents, including lemon, lavender, grapefruit and apple -- is ready to debut at the upcoming Association for Computing Machinery's Multimedia event. So, if you happen to work in close proximity to a printer and don't like the aforementioned smells, you may want to investigate some other forms of aroma tech (even if they too were ridiculed at one point).
New Print-n-Sniff Ink Jet Will Likely Just Jam-n-Stink originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 27 Oct 2010 09:00:00 EST. The symptoms -- which result from continuously staring at a monitor -- include blurred vision, light sensitivity, headaches and fatigue. While CVS is easily preventable, taking a screen-break while absorbed with work sometimes proves impossible.

Blaze Europe believes its Blink Now product provides a solution to that predicament, though, by reminding a computer user to sit back, relax and enjoy the soothing benefits of a nice, moisturizing blink. The Blink Now peripheral's small "visual display apparatus" supposedly accomplishes that task through the unceasing presence of a disembodied, blinking eye. Blaze claims the product "is easy to use, effective and will stimulate you passively without distracting you from the task on the computer." Yeah, because being constantly monitored by Sauron, Big Brother or the incredibly creepy eye from 'Blade Runner' wouldn't be distracting at all.
All-Seeing Eye Prevents Optical Ailment, Knows Your Every Move originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 27 Oct 2010 08:10:00 EST. LEGO bricks make everything better, including zoo animals and Star Wars, but the little colored bricks have been conspicuously absent from the world of gaming peripherals and accessories. That all changes this week when the LEGO-branded Wii remote goes on sale at Toys "R" Us for $40. The colorful Wii-mote is far from subtle, but there is a certain childish charm to its multi-hued, blocky design. Sadly, you don't build the Lego Wiimote from scratch. Just a standard controller, it does offer a few areas where you can add blocks in order to change the color pattern and design. There is no real benefit to choosing the Lego controller over the cheaper Nintendo option. But, if you find the white and black standard Wii options a little dull, the Lego Wiimote can bring a splash of color to your motion-controlled gaming sessions.
LEGO Wiimote Brings Even More Child-Like Charm to Wii originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 13 Oct 2010 15:00:00 EST. The arrival of motion-sensor technology for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 finally allows non-Nintendo gamers to share in that awesome and absurd add-on action, and various peripheral offerings are beginning to hit the market.

Atomic Accessories (which seems to be an incredibly misleading title) is deflating the add-on excitement for anticipatory Xbox owners, because the company decided to create -- wait for it -- a two-person Game Boat. Here's the first Moleskine iPad cover, for all of you snobby accessories fiends. (Joke! We love us some 'skines. They make writing on paper still seem important, somehow.) The iPad case, nay, "tablet cover" for "contemporary nomads," features a black leather exterior and a tan suede lining, as well as a blank notebook. Moleskine is also debuting a new iPhone case in the same style, but it's not compatible with you 4th-generation types. It'd probably just eat your bars anyway.
Three years ago, diabetes blogger Amy Tenderich implored Steve Jobs to promote the development of user-friendly iPod apps for diabetics. An iTunes query for "diabetes" now returns hundreds of related offerings for iPods, iPhones and iPads. But, according to Fast Company, cardiologist Dr. Leslie Saxon believes a "revolutionary product" from Sanofi-Aventis could soon provide unprecedented and exclusive benefits for diabetic Apple owners.

The company claims its iBGStar Blood Glucose Meter "seamlessly connects to the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch for the flexibility to manage your diabetes whenever, wherever." The glucometer, which can act alone or plug directly into the Apple gadgets, analyzes blood through Dynamic Electrochemistry. The relatively painless process (compared to other methods) only requires a small amount of blood, which can be collected by what Dr. Saxon describes as "a prick that can hardly be felt."
Continue reading iBGStar iPhone Glucometer Could Provide Unprecedented Aid to Diabetics

iBGStar iPhone Glucometer Could Provide Unprecedented Aid to Diabetics originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 10:54:00 EST.
Nintendo, of course, pioneered light gun gaming with the epochal 'Duck Hunt' and the somewhat forgettable Super Scope. In the '90s, though, Sony adapted the addictive 'Time Crisis' arcade series for the PlayStation, giving birth to a new generation of light guns and gaming.

That franchise and its Guncon armament remain with the PlayStation 3, but the advent of Move technology has quickly attracted a host of competitive accessory suitors, including the renowned and infamous peripheral masters from CTA Digitial. According to a CTA press release, the company now hopes to arm Sony's "serious gamers with the right accessory for realism and excitement" with the "first of its kind" Assault Rifle Controller (ARC). The ARC reportedly emits a variety of gunfire sound effects, features both a removable scope and stock, and apparently works with 'Call of Duty' and "all other shooter games."
Continue reading Armed With CTA Weaponry, PS3 Finally Gets the Assault Rifle It Deserves

Armed With CTA Weaponry, PS3 Finally Gets the Assault Rifle It Deserves originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 27 Jul 2010 07:25:00 EST. If you're not particularly observant and are more than a tad stubborn, we can easily see the following scenario playing out: trying to plug your iPod, camera or flash drive into your computer's USB port, while the plug is upside-down. Rather than check why the cable isn't simply sliding into the port, you force it harder and harder until eventually the port, the plug or both are broken. You might be saying to yourself, "I could never do that." Alas, dear friend, we'd believe you, but we've seen more than our fair share of shattered USB ports.

The Flipper USB solves this problem thanks to its symmetrical design and extra set of connectors, allowing the plug to fit into any port, regardless of orientation. The addition attaches to any USB bearing device and plugs into standard USB ports. UltraTek, the company behind Flipper USB, foresees everything from mice and flash drives to generic cables, including the patented connector, as Flipper compatible. Of course, we wouldn't expect too many people to be hopping on this bandwagon, if only because of its abysmal webpage. Advice to the guys at UltraTek and Flipper USB: get a Google Apps account, ditch the static .GIF homepage, and sign up for an e-mail address that doesn't end in @gmail.com. That, and don't use dolphin clip art for a logo. Video of it in action after the break. For those who miss (and can still remember) the quaint thrill of receiving honest-to-goodness snail mail in their mailbox, manufacturer Brando, known for what may be the world's smallest mouse, has made the USB Mailbox Friends Alert. The miniaturized plastic mailbox connects via USB to a user's computer, syncing via software to a variety of common e-mail programs (Yahoo, Gmail, Outlook and POP3 are all supported), as well as Twitter and Facebook accounts. When the user receives mail of any sort, the mailbox not only lights up (changing from red to green) and emits a sound, but also raises its tiny flag as well, just like the postman used to do.

The actual utility of the device is debatable. Considering the amount of messages we get, the raised flag would just serve as a haunting reminder of our always full inbox.
A group of Canadian hackers have identified and learned to exploit a flaw that allows them to turn any USB peripheral into a sort of hardware trojan horse. Plug-and-play USB devices follow a consistent rule, the device identifies itself to the PC. The computer, by rule, will believe that a UB device is whatever it claims to be; if a keyboard says it's a camera, the PC will register it as a camera.

This trust-by-default design makes it easy for a modified peripheral to collect or transmit data without raising any alarms. As a proof of concept, the Royal Military College of Canada's John Clark, Sylvain Leblanc and Scott Knight modified the circuitry of a keyboard, empowering it to steal data from the host hard drive and then transmit it via Morse code (using a blinking LED).
Continue reading Any USB Peripheral Is Now a Potential Threat

Any USB Peripheral Is Now a Potential Threat originally appeared on Switched on Sun, 04 Jul 2010 11:00:00 EST. Some time ago, Sony colorfully burst onto the console peripheral scene with its geeky, indispensable sci-fi raygun, but envious Wii and Xbox 360 owners will soon gain access to their own fantasy accoutrement. Performance Designed Products aims to enliven legions of sci-fi deprived gamers with vibrant 'Tron Legacy' controllers for all three major systems. The sleek controllers apparently adhere to the distinct and glorious visual legacy of the original 'Tron' without the blinding distraction of other illuminated peripherals.

In case Nintendo feels threatened by the encroachment upon its add-on domain, PDP has also designed an exclusive Wii peripheral for another highly anticipated release. Disney hopes to reinvigorate its patented Mouse with the 'Epic Mickey' adventure in animation, and PDP's paintbrush controller will allow gamers to realistically brush-battle the evil Phantom Blot. With a smooth appearance, and an accompanying "statue" charger, the brush could reverse a troubling recent trend of ridiculously painful Wii peripherals. It's nearly impossible to exaggerate the supreme and unequivocal command that Nintendo holds over the ridiculous, abysmal and periodically awesome add-on market. The company's dominance began decades ago with 'Duck Hunt,' the Power Glove and the Roll & Rocker, and the Wii's motion controllers have only bolstered Nintendo's preeminent peripheral standing.

Now that both Sony and Microsoft are rapidly nearing the releases of their own motion systems, anxious gamers are eagerly awaiting the inevitable accessories. For sharpshooters, virtual death-dealers and wannabe cowboys, weapons undoubtedly rank at the top of the most-wanted list. Nintendo (along with various peripheral pros and parasites) offers Wii owners a variety of gaming guns, including awkward Blasters, as well as awesomely realistic shotguns, sniper rifles and handguns.
Continue reading Essential Sci-Fi Raygun Blasts onto PS3 Peripheral Scene

Essential Sci-Fi Raygun Blasts onto PS3 Peripheral Scene originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 16 Jun 2010 18:30:00 EST. Back in May, we reported on rumors that 'Rock Band 3' might include a keytar peripheral and a mysterious new "Pro Mode." Today's official announcement clarified details on the next generation of everyone's favorite party game, arriving later this year. Pro gamers willing to shell out $150 can get a Mad Catz Fender Mustang peripheral loaded up with 102 buttons, 17 frets and six pluckable nylon strings, all to be played in the game's new "Pro Mode." Milking the peripheral market for all it's worth, there are also plans to release an official Squier Stratocaster that functions as both a real guitar and a game controller.

The keytar is very functional, and depending on the level of difficulty, you'll either press a couple keys or hit every note using the two-octave instrument. Billy Joel fans will be able to play the black and whites flat like an upright, and Devo-tees will be able to sling the peripheral around their shoulder in proper keytar style. In the never-ending pursuit of realism, three expansion cymbals are also available for the drum set.
The cartoonish, but otherwise humanoid characters are getting booted in favor of pig-beasts, demons and what appears to be Storm's little sister. To accompany the new epic story mode and over-the-top characters, Activision is packing in a new guitar that players can customize with swappable bodies.

The new axes move all the essential electronic guts into the neck, and added a thin strip down the middle of the guitar that holds the controls. The rest of the body serves no purpose other than aesthetics. The body's sides pop off and can be replaced with custom parts either purchased directly from Activision or from other peripheral companies. The standard body included with the new guitar is a metal-esque design (here) with red-accented flames, and those who pre-order 'Warriors of Rock' from Gamestop will also get an exclusive body from that retailer (after the jump) made to look like a literal ax.
Continue reading 'Warriors of Rock' Brings Customizable Axes to Guitar Hero

'Warriors of Rock' Brings Customizable Axes to Guitar Hero originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 09:15:00 EST. According to Joystiq, Gretzky is endorsing EA's 'NHL Slapshot' game for the Nintendo Wii, and that means he's also supporting the latest in a long line of weird Wii peripherals -- a plastic hockey stick. The scaled-down stick comes packaged with the game, which features Gretzky on the cover and as a playable character. Moving the plastic stick in different directions creates slap shots, wrist shots, body checks and poke checks, while pressing buttons on the Wiimote performs passes and other moves on the ice. Not only is Gretzky's inclusion big news, but 'NHL Slapshot,' which will be released September 7th, also marks EA's first hockey game for the Wii. [Ed. Note: Also, this is perfect for those of us who are currently consumed by the Stanley Cup. Objective journalism aside, this Chicago-born editor has to cheer: Go Blackhawks!]

Though sports games don't always translate well onto the Wii (the 'Madden' series being prime evidence), we wouldn't mind giving 'Slapshot' a try, so long as we're guaranteed not to break any teeth (or TV screens) while playing it. No matter how much we wish and hope, the renewed interest in '80s pop culture just won't go away. According to Ars Technica, a plastic keytar will be included in some forthcoming 'Rock Band 3' bundles. You can strap on the controller, which is being manufactured by Mad Catz, and "play along" to your favorite keytar-infused hair metal and New Wave hits. There's no word on what songs will appear in the latest incarnation of 'Rock Band,' but with this announcement, we'd expect Devo and The Human League would be safe bets. Rumor has it, 'Rock Band 3' will also feature a new 'Pro' mode that forces gamers to use "proper technique" to play the fake instruments.

Thankfully, we will have the option to purchase a bundle without the keytar. After all, we look nerdy enough tapping and bopping along to 'Rock Band.' Slinging a keytar around our neck and singing the words to 'Whip It' would just be overkill. [Ed. Note: That is a lie. Sign us up!]. For real? What the hell, CTA? What was once an incredibly entertaining enterprise -- discovering, trying and ridiculing absurd console peripherals -- has just become an exasperating chore. We laughed heartily at your Wii bowling ball, and eagerly anticipated the inevitable living room destruction. We chortled at the somewhat amusing Wiimote football and its possibilities for foolishness. Then, you forced a weary sigh when you gave us the monotonous Wii rower with its limited opportunities for hilarity.

Now, you give us the fanciful and infuriating Wii Wings. According to the CTA Digital website, the Wiings will help unfortunate recipients "soar to new heights" of nerd-dom, before they undoubtedly get pummeled mercilessly by cool-guys and bullies. Maybe, CTA, blasting some flying stuff with your once-cool Wii shotgun will help us to forget about un-caging our incredibly lame "inner bird." Until then, thanks for ruining what was once a favorite video game pastime. We just hope you'll apologize to, and reimburse, all the poor kids who will inevitably receive this winged-FAIL from well-intentioned grandparents. Have you ever wondered what that bone-crushing tackle in 'Madden NFL' would feel like? No? Well, neither have we, but that doesn't stop a University of Pennsylvania graduate student from investigating the effect. According to Wired, Saurabh Palan has created a gaming vest that, due to four solenoid actuators in the chest and back, delivers the impact of events on the screen. A cluster of motors hidden inside the vest kick in at the appropriate time to simulate different, and often painful, sensations in the appropriate region of the torso. For example, if your character gets shot in the gut, you'll feel simulated gunfire at the same point on your own body. It's not exactly our idea of a good time, but, for some gamers, this push toward total immersion could be exactly what they want.

For now, the Tactile Gaming Vest (TGV) can only simulate the feeling of a gun shot, blood flow or slashing movements. Still, it's not hard to imagine this device, and ones like it, catching on and incorporating more sensations. As for us, a rumble pack is good enough. After all, we play games so we can experience the rush of car chases and shoot-outs without the physical consequences. The kickoff to a new football season is a long way off, but gamers can still get a virtual fix on their console of choice. Nintendo Wii owners have a leg up in the realism department, though, thanks to the system's motion-sensing capabilities -- and, more recently, thanks to a new controller from CTA Digital that literally puts the ball in your hands. According to Gizmodo, this soft foam add-on for the Wiimote allows righties or lefties to experience the thrill of delivering a real pigskin. Just place the controller into the slot, slip on the wristband, grab hold of the foam football, and do your best Brett Favre impersonation. It's compatible with games like 'Madden NFL 10,' and a few others, too. Unfortunately, there's no word on pricing or release date yet.

Admittedly, you might look a little foolish holding this peripheral. But, the ball's gripping grooves could save your flatscreen one day; we all know the Wiimote can become a dangerous projectile if you suffer from the condition known as 'butter fingers.' As is often the case, though, those peripherals are typically lacking in the performance department. An upcoming add-on for iPhones looks like it may actually counter that trend of inadequacy.
The sleek two-piece Power A case fits snugly over the iPhone, and transforms it into a universal infrared (IR) remote control. Multiple devices can be controlled from one screen, and the IR transmitter is "portable and detachable." According to Gizmodo, the covering will reportedly cost $60 upon release, but the corresponding app will be free, and free updates and enhancements are also expected to soon follow. The Nintendo Power Pad served as a predecessor to the touch pad used for the enormously popular Dance Dance Revolution. Similarly, the Nintendo Power Glove, which was laughably ridiculous at the time, is now succeeded by the motion controls of the Wii remote and nunchuk.
Continue reading Game Over: The Worst Video Game Accessories Ever

Game Over: The Worst Video Game Accessories Ever originally appeared on Switched on Sun, 21 Jun 2009 14:01:00 EST. The keyboard is the most important interface a computer has, but despite decades of use, it really hasn't changed all that much. The latest product vying to replace it is the Peregrine glove, and, while we don't think it's the future of interacting with your PC or Mac, it could be a boon to gamers addicted to online RPGs.

Demonstrated to us at E3, the Peregrine is basically an elastic glove with some wires sewn into it at various points. Connecting one of those points to conductive patches on the palm and thumb creates an electrical circuit, which the glove's brain converts to a keypress. So, touch your thumb and forefinger together, and it might cast a spell in a role-playing game; touch your middle finger to your palm and it could heal you (or your in-game character, at least).
Continue reading Peregrine Gaming Glove Turns Your Hand Into a Keyboard

Peregrine Gaming Glove Turns Your Hand Into a Keyboard originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 04:03:00 EST. Nintendo's DSi may have just launched, but if you figured your wallet would be safe from buying any other related hardware in the near future, you clearly aren't in tune with the rabid peripheral market. Our best buds over at Joystiq sat down with David Young, the assistant PR manager for Nintendo of America, in order to talk shop and get a glimpse into the DSi's future. Of note, Mr. Young stated that DSi interaction with the Wii was "certainly a possibility," but he failed to elaborate much beyond that. What he did confess, however, was that the DSi will soon be interacting with a pair of pedometers (or "activity meters"), which will ship with the 'Personal Trainer: Walking' title. We're told that the devices will connect wirelessly with the console, and the game itself will be the first where you can import a Mii character from the Wii. Heck, users can even affix one of the meters to their dog in order to log Fido's exercise habits. Consider us (and our pets) highly intrigued.
'Personal Trainer: Walking' Bringing Pedometers to Nintendo DSi originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 08 Apr 2009 08:56:00 EST.
