Sources close to the matter told the Wall Street Journal that YouTube is planning to introduce new channels on the site, featuring both professionally produced, original content, as well as content that already exists on the platform. The channels will be highlighted on YouTube's homepage, and will be organized by category. The company is already holding discussions with Hollywood talent agencies about creating new channels, and may end up spending as much as $100 million on the overhaul.
Continue reading Google Adding 'Channels' to YouTube, Looking to Compete With TV

Google Adding 'Channels' to YouTube, Looking to Compete With TV originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 10:40:00 EST. Netflix has obtained the rights to stream 'Mad Men' reruns in the U.S. as part of a new deal with Lionsgate, the show's producer. The agreement allows Netflix to stream all seven seasons of the series, including the four that have already aired, and the three final seasons. That's 91 episodes in total, at a price of nearly $91 million. Unfortunately for everyone, this doesn't change the fact that 'Mad Men' won't be returning until 2012.
Netflix to Stream 'Mad Men' Reruns, Ease Our Withdrawal Symptoms originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 10:30:00 EST. The Netflix library just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Today the company announced that it struck a deal with Fox to bring older shows like 'The Wonder Years' (huzzah!) and 'Ally McBeal' (meh) to the streaming media service, as well as more recent titles like 'Glee' and the FX series 'Sons of Anarchy.' Fox will also be bringing "library" movies to Netflix after their pay-TV licenses expire.
More Fox Shows Coming to Netflix, Including 'The Wonder Years' originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 14:50:00 EST. Oh Starz, you saucy minx. Just days after Showtime announced some pretty dispiriting caps on Netflix content, Starz has announced similar intentions. Starting April 1st, a 90-day delay will be applied to all original shows and movies that are currently airing. Starz says that older shows and movies won't be touched, but still this is terrible news for you folk just dying to see what this 'Camelot' is all about. You know who you are...
Starz Follows Suit, Withholds From Netflix originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 17:45:00 EST. Rumor has it that Netflix, no longer content as a mere outlet for streaming video, is making a serious run at becoming a producer and distributor of original content. The company previously helped bankroll and distribute independent features through its Red Envelope Entertainment division (including the stellar and depressing 'Born into Brothels'). But the division has been largely quiet since 2008, when it closed up shop in an apparent effort to avoid competing with the studios with which it was attempting to strike content deals. But since then, the company has gone from popular DVD rental service with legitimate competitors to practically peerless leader in streaming video industry. Now Netflix appears poised to reenter the content game.
Continue reading Netflix Taking on HBO With Original Programing?

Netflix Taking on HBO With Original Programing? originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 14:05:00 EST. Netflix has a reasonable selection of independent films, but it only represents just a tiny fraction of the indie movies that get made every year. Many more may draw critical acclaim or wow audiences at festivals, but there are only so many distribution deals to be signed. A site called Fandor is interested in those movies that don't get picked up by studios or shown in theaters around the country, yet still draw praise on the festival circuit. The site's creators are offering streaming indie flicks for $10 a month and are relying on deep integration with Facebook to help spread the word about these movies that might otherwise fly under the radar.
Continue reading Fandor Wants to Be Netflix for the Indie Film Crowd

Fandor Wants to Be Netflix for the Indie Film Crowd originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 09 Mar 2011 15:20:00 EST. In 2010, sales and rentals of feature-length films online climbed a stunning 38-percent, with U.S. consumers spending a grand total of $385 million on downloadable and streaming movies. By contrast, only $366 million was spent to purchase or rent television shows online, marking the first time that movie downloads have surpassed that of TV. As the market has grown, Apple's dominance has started to slip. Whereas in 2009 iTunes movie downloads accounted for 74.4-percent of all sales, in 2010 it had dropped to 64.5-percent, largely thanks to increased competition from Microsoft and Sony who both saw sales of films through their respective game consoles increase. Another major player in the field, Amazon, came in behind Vudu in online sales and rentals, which may explain why the company is expected to shift to a subscription-based service similar to Netflix.
Feature Film Downloads Skyrocket, Surpass TV Streams originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 08 Feb 2011 18:00:00 EST. In the third quarter of 2010, subscription plans accounted for 41-percent of DVD rentals, while in-store transactions only accounted for 27-percent. What is slightly shocking is that, according to NPD, rental kiosks (like Redbox) outperformed video stores, making up 31-percent of rentals during Q3 -- a 10-percent increase from the same period last year. And, while companies like Redbox and Netflix continue to surge, Blockbuster has filed for bankruptcy protection. The former DVD rental empire has seen the writing on the wall, and has started shifting its focus to streaming movies and kiosks. Although Blockbuster may survive in name, don't be shocked if that strip mall DVD repository is gone by this time next year.
Shocker: Consumers Prefer DVD Rental Kiosks to Their Local Video Stores originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 18 Jan 2011 13:40:00 EST. Whether you're trying to satisfy a specific mood, or looking for that one Werner Herzog movie you haven't seen yet, Netflix's movie recommendations leave a lot to be desired. No, we're not interested in yet another cerebral, witty, foreign film with a strong woman. That's where the following sites come in handy. These services are like your obnoxiously knowledgeable film geek friend, except without all the condescending eyerolls over how you haven't seen 'The Seventh Seal' yet.
Continue reading Netflix Tech Tips: Finding the Right Movie for That Right Moment

Netflix Tech Tips: Finding the Right Movie for That Right Moment originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 14 Jan 2011 17:15:00 EST. Sadly, we've become used to the new movies in our Netflix queue being perpetually stuck at "Very Long Wait." It's bad enough that we have to hold off until we can watch something of merit. (Damn you, New York movie ticket prices!) But having to wait indefinitely even after a movie has come out on DVD? No way. Here are some handy tips we've compiled to make sure you can get the freshest releases ASAP.
Continue reading Netflix Tech Tips: Tricks and Hints for Getting New Releases

Netflix Tech Tips: Tricks and Hints for Getting New Releases originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 17:50:00 EST. We haven't opened that envelope since it arrived, and it's been lying there, gathering dust and staring at us accusingly, as if to say, "Will you ever make it through all of 'Lawrence of Arabia'?" We tell ourselves we'll get around to it. Days go by, then weeks. Seasons change, time passes, we grow old. And still that envelope is sitting there, its contents unwatched and kept from the eager eyes of other Netflix users.

This is the sad truth for many Netflix subscribers. Unless you are a diligent film freak, it's likely you'll wind up with movies that go unwatched for far too long. No matter the reason, neglecting an unwatched DVD gives one the feeling of not getting your money's worth. Thankfully, Netflix offers a convenient way to put your account on hold, whether you're not around, have too much happening, or simply have to make some economic cuts. In that case, freezing your account is an incredibly convenient way to stop using Netflix without completely ending your membership.
Continue reading How to Put Your Netflix Account on Hold

How to Put Your Netflix Account on Hold originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 12 Jan 2011 16:50:00 EST.
The official app has one gigantic leg up over third-party competitors on both iPhone and Windows 7: the ability to stream movies directly to your device. This feature alone sets the original apart from the rest, but, in a baffling move, the official app lacks the ability to manage personal queues.

This strange omission allows third-party apps to pick up plenty of slack -- helping the user to browse films, add them to their queue, and read film reviews. We've rounded up the most prominent third-party Netflix helpers and broken them down by what they do best, so you can pick the one that's right for you.
Continue reading Best Netflix Apps for Managing Your Queue on the Go

Best Netflix Apps for Managing Your Queue on the Go originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 11 Jan 2011 17:40:00 EST. If you're like us, then your Netflix queue has expanded to the point where its gravitational pull sucks in every film in its vicinity. A strained metaphor, perhaps, but it's easy to find your queue so overstuffed that it becomes utterly unmanageable and daunting. We've got a few essential organizational tips that will make the life of any cinema junkie exponentially easier.

The simplest way to trim the fat off your queue is to make sure you don't list any films that are available to stream. Take a quick look through your movies. Make sure to add any streamable flicks to your Instant Queue, and delete them from your disc queue (don't worry, they'll remain in Instant). Movies regularly come in and out of Instant availability, so make sure to keep an eye on previously un-streamable films, as well as those that are no longer available to watch instantly. (They'll be moved into your Instant Queue's "Saved" section.)
Continue reading Netflix: How to Curate Your Queue and Keep Your Flicks Organized

Netflix: How to Curate Your Queue and Keep Your Flicks Organized originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 10 Jan 2011 17:20:00 EST. 2010 has been a pretty packed year for tech. Streaming video came into its own with radically improved content choices and affordable living room hardware devices, Android and Apple's iOS dominated the cell phone market, the mobile app markets show no sign of slowing down and the iPad revealed a huge demand for tablets. We here at Switched have taken a look back over the past 12 months and each picked our favorite new device, app or technology. Share your can't-live-without tech from 2010 in the comments.
Continue reading Switched Weighs In: Gadgets, Apps and Tech That Made Our 2010

Switched Weighs In: Gadgets, Apps and Tech That Made Our 2010 originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 31 Dec 2010 17:00:00 EST. With those worries assuaged, and with a physical console on the immediate horizon, OnLive now apparently plans to turn its focus from rectifying problems to diversifying content. According to Reuters, OnLive officially intends to add television shows and movies to its streaming catalog.

The company, which is apparently already engaged in discussions with studio and network executives, reportedly hopes to offer the additional material to subscribers next year. CEO Steve Perlman (who has already assembled an impressive list of investors, including Warner Bros. and AT&T) contends that "streaming technology is available to anybody." He also boldly asserts that "OnLive can deliver any experience Netflix can." Given Perlman's predilection for prescient and unerring declarations, heeding the industry patriarch's assertions -- and continuing to adapt its own streaming model -- would probably be a wise move for Netflix, regardless of its established position.
OnLive Expands Its Streaming Sights From Games to TV and Movies originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 08 Dec 2010 08:30:00 EST. It was always a matter of when, not if. We know you've been patiently waiting for a streaming-only Netflix plan, and now the time has come. Starting today, customers can sign up for a $7.99-per-month Watch Instantly account. All of the plans that include DVD rentals have been bumped up by $1, so a single-DVD and streaming plan now costs $9.99. Still a good deal.
Continue reading Netflix Finally Unleashes Streaming-Only Plan

Netflix Finally Unleashes Streaming-Only Plan originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 09:37:00 EST. According to Netflix, it's because the Android platform isn't secure enough for Hollywood execs.

The fundamental hurdle seems to be the app's Digital Rights Management (DRM) system, and the fact that Netflix hasn't been able to standardize it across all Android devices. This lack of uniformity, the company says, has raised privacy concerns amongst movie studios, thus delaying the launch of the app. "Setting aside the debate around the value of content protection and DRM, they are requirements we must fulfill in order to obtain content from major studios for our subscribers to enjoy," writes Greg Peters, from Netflix's product development team.
Continue reading Security Issues Worry Hollywood, Delay Launch of Netflix App for Android

Security Issues Worry Hollywood, Delay Launch of Netflix App for Android originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 15 Nov 2010 08:47:00 EST. The Boxee Box is finally here! Last night, at an event here in New York City, the Boxee crew celebrated the release of its much-hyped -- and overly delayed -- streaming media box. The booze-soaked event celebrated the launch of the angular box, but also marked the official launch of the new Boxee software, which has finally shed the beta tag.

With version 1.0, Boxee is proclaiming that it's ready for the masses. And, with a rather extensive list of retail partners (including Walmart, Costco, Target and Amazon), it's clear that the company is serious about making an impact on the still-evolving streaming media box market.
Continue reading Boxee Box Launches with Software Update, Netflix and Hulu Plus Coming

Boxee Box Launches with Software Update, Netflix and Hulu Plus Coming originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 10:05:00 EST. While the original Apple TV had a few admirers among die-hard Apple fanatics and tinkerers, the company always considered the device to be a "hobby," and it never found mainstream success. The newest iteration, however, reflects Apple's first serious attempt to nail the living room media experience, and it's making a serious attempt at becoming a must-have accessory, thanks primarily to its support for Netflix Instant Streaming. This comes at a time when streaming video devices are starting to crowd the living room; with the user-friendly Roku, the much-hyped Boxee Box and several Google TV devices launching this fall, Apple has some heavy competition. Let's see if the Apple TV is up to the task.
The Red Envelope has gone even more virtual, finally switching to a downloadable program for optimal movie and show viewing. Previously, PS3 users (along with Wii owners) had to pop in a Netflix-supplied DVD to stream. Now, movie fans can just hop into the 'PlayStation Network' icon and opt to "buy" the free Netflix app, and the program starts downloading. When completed (after about 20 minutes), head over to your video section, launch, and voila.

Besides having one less disc cluttering your console, the new Netflix boasts high-def streaming capacities (at 1080p, for geeks) and a new, streamlined interface. Gone are the days of the enhanced scrolling dock -- now the layout is a nice, organized grid that lands the user on their Instant Queue. From there, pressing "square" gets you a list of personalized categories (your author apparently enjoys "Witty Sci-Fi" and "Action Movies with Strong Female Leads"), and "triangle" nets a traditional, alphabetical search. The D-pad now has a larger function -- hitting "down" expands personal choices and categories, while "left" and "right" act as a select and back button, respectively.
Last week, Sony announced Netflix subscribers could go disc-free with an update for their PlayStation 3 consoles starting today, October 18th. This morning, Nintendo announced Wii owners will no longer need an installation disc to stream Netflix on the video game console. Netflix subscribers can download and install the app directly from the Wii Shop Channel (new users can get access after paying the regular subscription price). 3 million gamers have registered for Netflix since it launched on the Wii back in April. Of course, the Xbox 360 has streamed Netflix movies and TV shows without a disc since 2008 -- better late to the party, Nintendo, than never.
Netflix Wii Owners Can Go Disc-Free for Video Streaming originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 18 Oct 2010 11:45:00 EST. We have opened, watched, resealed and returned hundreds of Netflix DVDs, but, for some reason, we've never wondered exactly how much the company spends on postage each year. Believe it or not, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings replied to that very question on the social Q&A site Quora with the answer; the company spends about $600 million each year on postage for its DVDs.
Reed Hastings Answers Quora Query About Netflix's Postage Costs originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 06:30:00 EST. Today Google TV got its own website to call home. While largely an exercise in marketing hype, the new site offers the first serious glimpse of Google TV apps in action. You'll be able to get your social network on, thanks to an official Twitter app, but more exciting are the apps offered by content partners that blur the line between Web and television. The 'NBA Game Time' app, for instance, adds live scores, highlights, standings and stats to your in-game experience. 'CNBC Real-Time' adds similar features to the financial news sector, allowing users to track stocks and news feeds while watching a live stream from the station. In preparation for the Google TV launch, TBS, TNT, CNN, Cartoon Network and HBO have also worked to optimize their websites for viewing in the living room. Amazon and Netflix are also on board, as are The New York Times, USA Today, VEVO, Pandora, Napster, Blip.tv and (of course) YouTube.

More apps will likely be debuting over the next several weeks as the first set of Google TV devices start making their way into consumers' hands. But it's not a bad lineup of launch partners. Check out the video after the break.
Continue reading Google TV Inches Closer to Reality With HBO, Twitter, Netflix Partnerships

Google TV Inches Closer to Reality With HBO, Twitter, Netflix Partnerships originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 05 Oct 2010 08:00:00 EST. NBC has struck a deal with Netflix that will bring content from the company's repository of network and cable TV shows to the streaming video service. Episodes from the most recently completed seasons (but not the current ones) of 'The Office' and '30 Rock' will now be accessible, as will entire series like 'Battlestar Galactica.' Subscribers will also be able to stream every episode of 'Saturday Night Live,' including new episodes the day after they air, marking the first time that up-to-date TV broadcasts will be available through the service.

This comes just one day after Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said the company plans to offer a streaming-only subscription option in the U.S. No details were offered in the CEO's blog post announcing the intentions, but it's expected to fall in-line with the recently launched Canadian streaming-only plan, which runs $7.99 a month ($1 cheaper than the one DVD plus streaming plan). The expanding archives of content available through Netflix and Hulu mean paying the $60+ a month for traditional cable service is increasingly unnecessary.
Netflix Watch Instantly Gets 'SNL,' 'The Office,' '30 Rock' in NBC Deal originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 10:55:00 EST. Netflix's high-profile Canadian launch attracted a sizable crowd of enthusiastic consumers yesterday. As it turns out, however, many of the "consumers" who showed up for the Toronto event were actually paid actors.

As the Globe and Mail reports, the online video rental and streaming company has now admitted to having paid extras to show up and "play types, for example, mothers, film buffs, tech geeks, couch potatoes, etc." An explanatory handout that Netflix distributed to extras asked them to "behave as members of the public, out and about enjoying their day-to-day life, who happen upon a street event for Netflix and stop by to check it out."
Continue reading Netflix Hired Actors to Show up to Canadian Launch Event, Promptly Apologizes

Netflix Hired Actors to Show up to Canadian Launch Event, Promptly Apologizes originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 09:14:00 EST. The Apple TV has been something of a joke since it was first introduced as a "hobby" way back in 2007. Essentially, an underpowered and hobbled Mac Mini with an oversimplified UI, it found some fans in the small demographic of tinkerers and Apple fanboys. But now, after years of speculation, Steve Jobs is finally putting down the Apple TV, and, in its place, picking up, well, a new Apple TV.

The new Apple TV will be able to pump out HD video, although there's no word on whether it'll handle 1080p or be limited to 720p. It sports a completely new look, one that is slightly less reminiscent of the Mac Mini. It's seriously small (tiny enough for Steve to fit in the palm of his hand) and matte black. Around back are the expected HDMI and power connectors, as well as an Ethernet port. But, for those without a long enough cable, Apple has included Wi-Fi N, so you can streaming your HD content.
Continue reading Apple TV Gets Tiny, Gets Netflix, Gets Useful

Apple TV Gets Tiny, Gets Netflix, Gets Useful originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 01 Sep 2010 14:35:00 EST. While Netflix customers have been able to stream movies and TV shows to their iPads, iPhone and iPod touch users have been inexplicably left out in the cold -- until today, that is. Netflix has officially announced that its premium streaming video service will be coming to the more pocketable of Apple's iOS devices. Netflix customers can now download the free app, and access the full Watch Instantly library over both 3G and Wi-Fi. While you can add, remove and reorganize your instant queue, the red envelope and DVD-addicted among you will find yourselves sorely disappointed, as you can no longer manage your DVD queue from within the app.

The new Netflix streaming app requires that you run iOS 3.13 or higher on your iPhone or iPod touch, and that you pay (obviously) the monthly subscription fees. Check out the gallery below for some hands-on shots of the new Netflix for iOS 4 in action.
Thanks to a deal with Epix, Netflix's Watch Instantly catalog will soon see a windfall of new online content, consisting of both new movies and classic franchises, such as 'Star Trek' and 'James Bond.' Epix, a joint Paramount-MGM-Lionsgate network for video content, will also eventually grant access to box office winners like 'Iron Man 2' and 'Dinner for Schmucks.' Under the five-year agreement, films will hit Netflix 90 days after they debut on premium subscription services, which means newer movies won't be available anywhere near their DVD release date. We've never really been wowed with the Epix selection of streaming content (as last we checked the site was still heavily promoting 'Cloverfield'), but anything that boosts the size of available content on Netflix is a welcome development. We're sure you're familiar with Redbox's kiosks, which offer DVD rentals for $1, and can often be found on your way out the door of your local mega-mart. Now the company is updating its services to offer high-def Blu-ray rentals. Of course, the HD discs will set you back slightly more than the $1 DVDs, but, at $1.50, the price bump is hardly a deal breaker. Roughly half of the company's 26,000 kiosks are now offering the Blu-ray rentals, and the remaining machines are scheduled to be upgraded by the fall.

Even though discs are going the way of MySpace -- as streaming services from Netflix, Blockbuster and even Hulu are replacing traditional rentals and DVD purchases -- plenty still get their video fix from a disc. While we're sure Redbox customers appreciate the HD option, renters had better not get too cozy; the company hopes to rapidly shift to streaming video in order to be a competitor, and not a relic of a bygone, disc-laden era.
Yesterday, Kanye West did some networking at Facebook headquarters, where he also delivered some material from his upcoming album. After West expressed a fear that he might "wear out his welcome," employees enthusiastically urged him to continue. Hmm. Go back to work, or slack off and watch Kanye? Tough call.
ESPN recently partnered with social gaming firm Playdom, the creator of 'Social City,' to develop a line of social sports games. Disney, which happens to own ESPN, apparently recognized Playdom's market potential; it just purchased the company for $563.2 million with another $200 million in possible incentives.
After months of waiting, Android 2.2, or Froyo, has apparently made an appearance on the Droid X. When asked about the company's expansion to offer an online service, Redbox President Mitch Lowe said, "The way we look at it is, how can it help us deliver to our customers things we can't do in our kiosks?"

Well, kiosks can't deliver content to people unwilling to leave the comfort of their homes. However, the convenience and cost of $1 a night entices more than enough customers to constitute profits for Redbox, as there are over 24,000 kiosks nationwide. Still, as it becomes easier to stream HD content to set-top boxes, entertainment services will have to jump into the online market to survive. Perhaps Redbox will offer membership packages comparable to, if not cheaper than, Netflix's, or allow for non-membership customers to stream any title for kiosk prices. Oh, and maybe Redbox can feature brand-new releases, days before they hit stores! Well, we movie geeks can dream, can't we? There's a load of great tech news happening out there every day, and, unfortunately, we just can't cover it all. Here are a few of the other noteworthy things we saw today on our never-ending journey through the wild, wild Web.

ReadWriteWeb investigates how the nearly universally acclaimed Old Spice Guy videos were made, and it turns out the whole production was a team effort from marketing agency Wieden + Kennedy. Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....

Toyota's Prius, which once symbolized and dominated the eco-friendly car movement, apparently just isn't friendly enough for California anymore. The state is revoking the vehicle's HOV lane privileges (while maintaining those same HOV rights for "super-clean cars" like the Tesla). [From: Discovery Treehugger]

The Netflix diversification movement, which has included the addition of premium networks and console streaming capabilities, may be paying off. Netflix reportedly garnered more unique individual visitors during June than its powerful rival Hulu.
Venezuelan dictator and frequent tweeter Hugo Chavez is continuing his Twit-hunt for economic dissidents, as two Venezuelan micro-bloggers have reportedly been arrested -- and face up to 11 years in prison -- for criticizing the nation's financial infrastructure. [From: Forbes]

A new European proposal that targets online sexual predators, Written Declaration 29, would involve forcing search engines to comprehensively store search data for two years, although pedophiles frequently incriminate themselves through disturbingly stupid means. Many critics are vehemently opposed to the proposal because of the glaring civil rights issues.
In a privacy nightmare, bankruptcy proceedings for the defunct site XY, which catered to young gay males, could prompt the release of personal information for as many 1 million former members. [From: CNET]

Apple inspired, and continues to inspire, a significant amount of animosity because of various iPhone 4 issues, but new ads for the 'FaceTime' video-chat app could appease that unrest. Some observers are touting the "powerful" and "seductive" campaign's ability to compassionately "play the heartstrings." We think the slow-zoom is just a little creepy.
