David Bowie's 'Golden Years,' from his classic album 'Station to Station,' <a href="http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/david-bowie-readies-golden-years-ios-app-413579" target="_blank">is coming to the Apple App Store</a> on June 6th. You'll have the ability to remix the song by manipulating eight of the original instrument tracks, including vocals, guitar and percussion. Users will even be able to export their mixes as MP3s and share them with friends. Bowie released a similar edition of 'Space Oddity' in 2009 for $2.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/05/david-bowies-golden-years-to-be-rereleased-as-remixable-ios-a/">David Bowie's 'Golden Years' to be Rereleased as Remixable iOS App</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 15:10:00 EST. <img alt="one soul thrust" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.switched.com/media/2011/04/onesoulthrust.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></div>
According to their <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/onesoulthrust" target="_blank">Twitter page</a>, <a href="http://www.onesoulthrust.com/" target="_blank">One Soul Thrust</a> is a "groove-oriented purist rock band from Canada," with "a female singer who whispers and wails like an angel sighing sass in your ear." But One Soul Thrust aren't very well-known. They have fewer than 300 followers on Twitter, and their <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/onesoulthrust" target="_blank">YouTube channel</a> features a single video that's been viewed barely 300 times. Last week, though, their manager, Cameron Tilbury, discovered that the band's debut album had been illegally downloaded more than 100,000 times. One Soul Thrust, he concluded, had suddenly gone "piracy platinum" -- <a href="http://torrentfreak.com/cria-watches-massive-music-piracy-crisis-devastate-unknown-band-110404/" target="_blank">or so they thought</a>.<br />
<br />
Tilbury made his discovery after doing a Google search for the band's downloads on BitTorrent. That led him to a graphic on <a href="http://www.limetorrents.com/" target="_blank">LimeTorrents</a>, which showed that One Soul Thrust's album had been downloaded 100,000 times. According to the Canadian Recording Industry Association, a band must sell 100,000 copies or downloads of their album, in order to achieve platinum status. Of course, because they didn't actually sell any of the pirated albums, One Soul Thrust couldn't achieve platinum status, and wouldn't see a cent of revenue.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/04/one-soul-thrust-goes-piracy-platinum/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Obscure Canadian Band Mistakes Spam for 100K Illegal Downloads</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/04/one-soul-thrust-goes-piracy-platinum/">Obscure Canadian Band Mistakes Spam for 100K Illegal Downloads</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 14:19:00 EST. Drummer and engineer Aseem Mishra got tired of lugging his drum kit to gigs. Naturally, <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12905705" target="_blank">he fashioned a pair of musical jeans</a> to take its place. The pants -- sorry, <em>trousers</em> -- have eight sensors woven into the fabric, and are hooked up to a backpack with circuitry and speakers. Each sensor corresponds to a different drum, and hitting them duplicates the sound of their real-world equivalents. Mishra took first prize in his age group <a href="http://www.hymerscollege.co.uk/news.php?sid=360" target="_blank">in the Young Engineer of Great Britain Competition</a> -- a repeat of last year, when he won for a light-up drum kit.<br />
<br />
The jeans really need to be seen (and heard), so check out the video <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12905705" target="_blank">here</a>. And keep an ear out for this morsel at :50. Grab some popcorn and pull up a chair because this is gonna be good. Amazon just edged ever closer to world domination by offering <a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/29/amazon-cloud-player-streams-your-music-collection-to-your-androi/" target="_blank">a free cloud service that lets customers access their music</a> from a range of devices. It's basically a huge eff-you to the record labels, with whom Amazon is still in negotiation over streaming rights. One anonymous executive <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/29/us-amazon-idUSTRE72S13H20110329" target="_blank">put it to Reuters this way</a>: <span id="articleText">"[It's] somewhat stunning... </span><span id="articleText">I've never seen a company of their size make an announcement, launch a service and simultaneously say they're trying to get licenses."<br />
<br />
Amazon <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110329/amazons-cloud-service-is-a-legal-b-illegal-c-probably-here-to-stay/" target="_blank">told</a> All Things Digital that it doesn't need licenses for music storage. What is less clear is whether or not it need licenses for streaming. (In fact, the labels themselves do not seem to be clear on that either.) Insiders told Reuters that unlicensed streaming might be illegal; in 2007, a similar storage locker service <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2008/03/28/emi-suffers-a-setback-in-case-against-mp3tunes/" target="_blank">was sued</a> by EMI for copyright infringement. EMI didn't win, but the mere threat of the label litigation seems to have kept many from pursuing lockers.</span><p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/30/amazons-cloud-drive-ruffles-music-industry/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Amazon's Cloud Drive Ruffles Music Industry</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/30/amazons-cloud-drive-ruffles-music-industry/">Amazon's Cloud Drive Ruffles Music Industry</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 11:45:00 EST. The danger now is different. The man no longer needs a monopoly on musical taste. He just wants a few cents on the dollar of every song you download, he doesn't care what that song says. Other times he doesn't even care if you pay that dollar, as long as you listen to your stolen music on his portable MP3 player, store it on his Apple computer, send it to your friends through his Verizon network. To paraphrase Yeltsin's famous offer to the Chechens, take as much free music as you can stomach. We'll see where it gets you.</blockquote>
<a href="http://www.slate.com/id/2289177/pagenum/all/" target="_blank">n+1's Nikal Saval</a> undertakes a thorough and disheartening examination of digital music, the iPod and the pluralistic state of taste, drawing on sociological and cultural texts from Pierre Bourdieu and Theodor Adorno. In it, he contends that the personalized experience of the iPod is isolating, consumerist and deafening. When sound is everywhere, the most valuable cultural commodity is silence.<br />

	<img alt="blue beat" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.switched.com/media/2011/03/wellthisisawkward.jpg" style="border-width: 1px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></div>
BlueBeat, a site that sells streaming music by a range of artists, just settled a federal lawsuit that a bunch of pissed-off record labels had brought against it for selling and streaming Beatles songs. The songs were posted about a year before Apple released them on iTunes and were sold for just $0.25 each. By the time BlueBeat was forced to pull them, more than 67,000 songs had been sold. The settlement was for $950,000 -- roughly the cost of the labels' attorney fees.<br />
<br />
But that's not even the strange part. That comes into play with BlueBeat's own copyright system. In its defense, BlueBeat's<a href="http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2011/03/28/financial/f103314D39.DTL&amp;feed=rss.business" target="_blank"> lawyers argued</a> that the site founder had created a method of "psycho-acoustic simulation" which makes the songs it hosts unique recordings under BlueBeat's copyright. And, indeed, BlueBeat still claims on its site: "<span class="footer-text">All audio-visual works copyright (C) 2011 ...</span><span class="footer-text">BlueBeat, Inc</span><span class="footer-text">". </span>The judge didn't buy it, and this settlement is just the tip of the iceberg. Another trial begins today to figure out how much BlueBeat owes EMI Group PLC, Capitol Records and Virgin Records America.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/29/bluebeat-settles-beatles-suit-for-950000/">Music Site Settles Beatles Suit for $1 Million</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 15:15:00 EST. We know that <a href="http://www.switched.com/category/@google">Google</a> is planning a streaming music service for <a href="http://www.switched.com/category/@android">Android</a> devices, and rumors of <a href="http://www.switched.com/category/@apple">Apple</a> offering a similar product have been circulating for years. Late last night, though, Amazon stole their thunder. With little to no fanfare, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/29/amazon-cloud-player-goes-live-streams-music-on-your-computer-an/" target="_blank">Amazon unveiled 'Amazon Cloud Player</a>,' a service that comes bundled with 5GB of free Cloud Drive storage for uploading your music and other files, too. The actual Cloud Player comes in two flavors: a web-based music manager, and a music player for Android that is now built-in to the Amazon MP3 app.<br />
<br />
Signing up for the service is a little cumbersome. If you don't already have a Cloud Drive account (which you probably don't), you'll have to sign up for one. Once you've uploaded some music -- which is simple enough using the giant "upload" button on the Cloud Drive page -- you'll then need to sign up for Cloud Player. You have to do this from the <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/amazon">Amazon</a> site on you computer; it can't be done from your phone, and it wasn't immediately apparent to us that Cloud Drive and Cloud Player required two separate sign-ups. Once we signed up on Amazon, we had to log out of our account on our phone and log back in to force Amazon MP3 to pull up our music.<br />

Oh, Justin Bieber. How did the Internet even cope before you were around? His music video for '<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kffacxfA7G4" target="_blank">Baby</a>' just surpassed 500 million views, making it the most viewed video in YouTube history. But with 1.1 million "dislikes," the video also, and <a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/biebers_baby_will_hit_500m_views_today_its_also_th.php?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+readwriteweb+(ReadWriteWeb)" target="_blank">ever so slightly, edges out</a> Rebecca Black's 'Friday' for the distinction of most hated. Basically, Bieber's stuff is the most watched, most disliked, and most debate-inspiring. How on Earth did Internet denizens occupy themselves pre-Bieber?<br />
<br />
Or, as one of the video's 4.3 million commenters (oh, we forgot to mention that part) put it: "half billion OMG." We know, we know; <em>you're</em> not part of that very special sub-section of humanity. But half a billion?! OMG. You know you're going to give in sooner or later.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/28/justin-bieber-baby-youtube-hits-500-million-views/">The Biebs's 'Baby' Dominates YouTube With 500 Million Views</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 10:45:00 EST. Alternatives like FrostWire and <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/bittorrent">BitTorrent</a> have seen an uptick in use since the insanely popular sharing network went down, but not quite the jump one would have expected. In fact, since the courts brought down the P2P file-sharing network, <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2011/03/with-limewire-down-americans-dont-know-how-to-steal-music/72990/" target="_blank">music piracy in the U.S. is down</a> -- way down. The percentage of Web-connected Americans sharing music online has dropped from 16-percent to just 9-percent since the injunction in October. What's more, those still sharing music online are downloading less. The average number of songs downloaded over a three-month period by active file sharers fell nearly 50-percent, to only 18 tracks in the fourth quarter of 2010.<br />
<br />
It may simply be that it will take some time for those who relied on LimeWire to find a new source of free music. But, if they don't, will this affect profits at the record companies? Whether or not piracy has a significant effect on music sales is a hotly debated topic. After spending so much time and effort lobbying to have LimeWire shut down, if sales don't start picking up soon, the <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/riaa">RIAA</a> will look more foolish than it does already.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/25/limewire-shutdown-piracy-drops/">With LimeWire Gone, Piracy Is Down -- But Will Music Sales Climb?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST. CNET is <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-31001_3-20046917-261.html" target="_blank">reporting</a> that employees at Google have begun internally testing Google Music, meaning that the music streaming service could be ready for launch. There is, however, one slight problem: that Google Music needs music. Sources close to the company say that Google is still negotiating with the four major record labels, and that the talks have been delayed primarily because of the complexity of the issue. Google is reportedly pursuing the rights to store users' existing libraries on its cloud servers, but the labels are treading carefully.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/25/google-music-tested-internally/">Google Testing Google Music Internally, Still Needs Music</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 10:28:00 EST. One of the reasons that Aussie dance quartet Cut Copy is constantly on our iPods is because the band, with its electro-pop-meets-arena-rock stylings, is one of the most forward-thinking dance acts around. The boys use the futuristic preoccupations that were pervasive in the '70s and '80s -- think classic synths or dreamy vocals that owe a bit to Boy George or OMD -- to make incredible music that sounds incredibly "now." We got to know them with 'Bright Like Neon Love,' 2004's stellar send-up of New Wave and uplifting house music, and still jam to 2008's groove-filled "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8R1X2TxW5Rk" target="_blank">Lights and Music</a>," a dance song played with real instruments that could be at home in either 2011 or 1977.<br />
<br />
Switched caught up with lead singer Dan Whitford to talk tunes: how he makes them, what he loves, and what equipment he cannot live without. He let us into his studio and allowed us to peruse his iTunes. We weren't surprised by his vast influences, like Windows start-up sound designer Brian Eno or Cut Copy's current labelmate Ariel Pink. Cut Copy proves music isn't "electronic" or "rock-and-roll" anymore. For their new album 'Zonoscope,' music, instruments and technology have an intertwined, symbiotic relationship.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/25/audiofile-cut-copy-shows-off-synths-and-talks-todd-rundgren/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Audiofile: Cut Copy Shows Off Synths and Talks Todd Rundgren</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/25/audiofile-cut-copy-shows-off-synths-and-talks-todd-rundgren/">Audiofile: Cut Copy Shows Off Synths and Talks Todd Rundgren</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 08:40:00 EST. <a href="http://waldemeyer.com/" target="_blank">Moritz Waldemeyer</a>, the designer who created a '<a href="http://www.switched.com/2010/01/11/home-disco-ipod-dock-is-like-studio-54-in-space/" target="_blank">Home Disco</a>' out of lasers and a smoke machine, has unveiled his latest installation: a <a href="http://waldemeyer.blogspot.com/2011/03/dover-street-market-is-currently.html" target="_blank">laser harp</a>. Consisting of a black obelisk surrounded by a cage of laser beams, Waldemeyer's harp uses light sensors and an Open Frameworks app to create sounds whenever a person interacts with the laser field. Waldemeyer's "<a href="http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2011/03/interactive-laser-harp-sculpture.html" target="_blank">weird and wonderful</a>" soundscape is comprised of sirens and alarms, which are looped and woven together to form a cocoon of ominous space.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/24/moritz-waldemeyer-laser-harp/">This Interactive Laser Harp Doesn't Sound Like a Harp</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST. Before she won an Oscar for 'The Hurt Locker,' Kathryn Bigelow made 'Strange Days,' a futuristic sci-fi movie imagining a world where people did "playback," a virtual-reality drug that allowed users to live in another body. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXLpXu9T7j0&amp;feature=player_embedded#at=55" target="_blank">Brooklyn art rockers TV on the Radio tapped into Bigelow's tale with 'Will Do,'</a> which puts each of the guys in wire-laden, blinking BluBlockers to experience a techno fantasy where, amongst other things, adorable frontman Tunde Adebimpe brings his love back to life. Fun fact: Adebimpe, who was in 'Rachel Getting Married,' will be releasing a video for each song on TVOTR's newest album 'Nine Types of Light,' out in April.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/24/tv-on-the-radio-will-do-virtual-reality-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TV on the Radio's Newest Video Pays Tribute to Virtual Reality, Amazing Beards</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/24/tv-on-the-radio-will-do-virtual-reality-video/">TV on the Radio's Newest Video Pays Tribute to Virtual Reality, Amazing Beards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 13:40:00 EST. On Tuesday, the always-delightful singer <a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/23/lady-gaga-drops-by-google/" target="_blank">dropped by</a> Google HQ; yesterday, she paid her respects to Twitter. She charmed the engineers, was interviewed by Evan Williams, and by all <a href="http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Lady-Gaga-Visits-Twitter-118545509.html" target="_blank">accounts</a> highly ingratiated herself. Just this morning, Gaga <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/50839501693657088" target="_blank">announced</a> she'll be dropping a song tomorrow via Twitter. <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/rebeccablack">Rebecca Black</a>, the 13-year old from California that scored a viral hit with her song and video 'Friday,' has endured quite a bit of abuse at the hands of YouTube commenters and <a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/18/rebecca-black-friday-4-chan-operation-black-friday/">4Chan</a>. But she shouldn't take the hate to heart, because, while the /b/tards are sitting in their parents' basements and wondering what it would be like to see a naked girl in real life, <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/rebecca-black-stands-make-1-169934" target="_blank">Black is raking in the cash</a>. How <em>much</em> the teen has earned from 'Friday' is anyone's guess, with estimates ranging from around <a href="http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/digital-and-mobile/rebecca-black-s-first-week-sales-not-bad-1005084972.story" target="_blank">$25,000 per week</a> and <a href="http://blogs.forbes.com/chrisbarth/2011/03/21/mock-rebecca-black-all-you-want-shes-laughing-to-the-bank/" target="_blank">up to $1 million in total</a>. Even at the lowest end, that's quite a return on the original investment Black and her mother made in hiring ARK Music Factory; the company wrote and and recorded two songs, and shot a video for $2,000. At this point, the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0&amp;feature=player_embedded" target="_blank">video for 'Friday'</a> has been viewed almost 35 million times, which puts it in the same league as the latest from Lady Gaga, and far ahead of recent singles from <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OehxXNCYvTM" target="_blank">Katy Perry</a> and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdS6HFQ_LUc" target="_blank">Rihanna</a>. And the song continues to chart in iTunes top 50 songs.<br />
<br />
So, as cringe-inducing as the track may be (and it is truly horrible), just remember: this 13-year-old is actually doing something, putting herself out there, and earning cash (hand over fist!) while doing it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/23/rebecca-black-cashing-in-on-friday-video/">Haters Gonna Hate, But Rebecca Black Still Makes Stacks of Cash</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Wed, 23 Mar 2011 10:05:00 EST. <img alt="UMG Classic Albums" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.switched.com/media/2011/03/mzl.mgksmmzu.480x480-75.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></div>
Here's an interesting push by the music industry. Universal Music Group has started selling <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/appsblog/2011/mar/21/ipad-classic-album-apps" target="_blank">iPad app versions of classic albums</a>, including Nirvana's '<a href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/nirvana-classic-album-nevermind/id425561350?mt=8" target="_blank">Nevermind</a>,' <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/app/rush-classic-albums-2112-moving/id425453807?mt=8#" target="_blank">Rush's</a> '2112' and 'Moving Pictures,' and '<a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id425547049?mt=8#" target="_blank">Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones</a>' by the <strike>Beatles</strike> Rolling Stones. The apps are billed as "interactive, socially aware, and Internet connected," and include video interviews, extensive liner notes and comment sections. Notably missing from the apps, though, are the albums themselves. Both the Rush and Nirvana apps include only excerpts of songs, while the Rolling Stones app includes the entire concert film.<br />
<br />
At $5.99 (Nirvana), $6.99 (Rush) and $7.99 (Rolling Stones) the apps are quite pricey for mere companion pieces to classic albums. We love liner notes more than most, but liner notes alone are hardly worth the cost of an entire album, even if they're interactive. Perhaps UMG could see fit to include a redeemable code for the albums? That way it doesn't have to sacrifice those all-important, chart-eligible iTunes sales.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/21/ipad-gets-overpriced-companion-apps-for-classic-albums/">iPad Gets Overpriced Companion Apps for Classic Albums</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 13:00:00 EST. It looks like 4chan is cooking up a plot to <a href="http://gawker.com/#!5783222/whats-4chan-going-to-do-to-rebecca-black" target="_blank">take down Rebecca Black</a> -- the 13-year-old from Orange County, whose '<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD2LRROpph0" target="_blank">Friday</a>' video has given new meaning to the word "cringe."<br />
<br />
The infamous /b/ message board has been aflame with activity lately, with members of the 4chan underworld working to patch together an anti-Black campaign dubbed 'Operation Black Friday.' The community seems determined to retaliate against the teenager, who appeared on 'Good Morning America' today -- though it's still unclear how they plan to go about doing so.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/18/rebecca-black-friday-4-chan-operation-black-friday/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>4chan Looking to Take Down Rebecca Black With 'Operation Black Friday'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/18/rebecca-black-friday-4-chan-operation-black-friday/">4chan Looking to Take Down Rebecca Black With 'Operation Black Friday'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Fri, 18 Mar 2011 11:00:00 EST. Do you wonder if the urbane baritone who narrates <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/Diginfonews" target="_blank">those DigInfo News spots</a> ever has to record multiple takes because he's laughing his (possibly) Australian ass off at those consistently wacky Japanese inventions? I do. Because I'm not sure I'd be able to say "chicken skin can generate vibrato effects" without breaking into some kind of fit of giggling burp-ups.<br />
<br />
Anyway, these are <a href="http://www.diginfo.tv/2011/03/16/11-0067-r-en.php" target="_blank">forks that make noises when you eat</a>. Noises that made my cats duck for cover. Basically, these instrumental utensils turn you into a living circuit-cum-theremin so that family dinners can sound like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9GJCL3PpYA" target="_blank">early Pauline Oliveros</a> or something? Just watch the video. But be prepared for lots of close-up shots of this woman's mouth chewing a variety of foodstuffs.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/16/eatheremin-musical-fork-diginfo-news/">EaTheremin's Noisy Forks: Because Utensils Weren't Already Annoying Enough</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 17:05:00 EST. The ease of sharing digital files? DRM limitations? If you thought it was any of those, you are clearly a mere mortal. Superstar Jon Bon Jovi has been mulling this over, and finally came to the conclusion that Steve Jobs is "personally responsible for killing the music business." Bon Jovi's <a href="http://www.timesplus.co.uk/sto/?login=false&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thesundaytimes.co.uk%2Fsto%2FMagazine%2FRegulars%2Farticle569091.ece">bizarre comment is from an interview</a> with Britain's Sunday Times, in which he cries over the loss of vinyl or something. Meanwhile, we weren't even aware that the music business is dead.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/15/bon-jovi-steve-jobs-responsible-killing-music-business/">Bon Jovi Blames Steve Jobs For Ruining Music</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Tue, 15 Mar 2011 13:07:00 EST. The fellow that brought us the drum machine -- that 1980s game-changer -- is still at it. Roger Linn's LinnStrument, which you can hear in the preview video after the break, is a marvel of a modern music-maker. Arrayed in grid form, the touchpad of notes adjusts pitch, timbre and expression according to finger movement and pressure. Geeky? No doubt. But it sounds roughly like a theremin on ecstasy, and is easily one of the more beautiful things we've heard in a while. For the good stuff, skip ahead to 1:30.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/13/roger-linn-linnstrument/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Electronic Music Gets a New Weapon With the 'LinnStrument'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/13/roger-linn-linnstrument/">Electronic Music Gets a New Weapon With the 'LinnStrument'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Sun, 13 Mar 2011 15:05:00 EST. The landscapes of Google Earth have never looked quite as hypnotic (or ominous) as they do in this <a href="http://vimeo.com/wupwup/luxrepeat" target="_blank">music video</a> from the band <a href="http://www.wupwup.com/" target="_blank">Lux Repeat</a>. Created by designer <a class="external" href="http://resample.de/traubeck/" style="outline-style: none; color: rgb(6, 69, 173); text-decoration: underline; cursor: pointer;" target="_blank">Bartholom&auml;us Traubeck</a>, the clip takes viewers on an aerial voyage across Google Earth's pixelated landscape, in all its geographic desolation and graphic vibrance. Equal parts nature documentary and flight-simulator video game, it's definitely worth getting lost in for a few minutes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/12/lux-repeat-music-video-remixes-google-earth/">Lux Repeat Music Video Remixes Google Earth</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Sat, 12 Mar 2011 13:00:00 EST. '<a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/portal">Portal</a>' is one of the most surprisingly simple and pleasurable games you'll ever play. It's an understated game with atmosphere and personality to spare. These things could also easily describe gloomy indie rock outfit <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/thenational">The National</a>, which makes the band a perfect match for the 'Portal 2' soundtrack. When it lands later this year, it'll feature <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/03/11/the-national-to-provide-song-for-portal-2/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+RockPaperShotgun+%28Rock%2C+Paper%2C+Shotgun%29" target="_blank">an original song from The National, crafted especially for the game</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/12/portal-2-soundtrack-to-feature-the-national/">'Portal 2' Soundtrack to Feature The National</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Sat, 12 Mar 2011 09:00:00 EST. And at $8.99, it's no bargain -- which is a shame, because it's so cool. The app automatically generates music while also letting you manipulate sounds and loops using a retro, green-on-black display, though that description hardly does it justice. It's no 'GarageBand,' but it'll keep you knee-deep in krautrock all day long.<br />

<a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/foursquare">Foursquare</a> fanatics at <a href="http://www.switched.com/category/@sxsw">SXSW</a> may want to start following <a href="http://foursquare.com/bigboi" target="_blank">Big Boi</a> before heading out on the town and checking in from absolutely everywhere. The less-eccentric half of Outkast is running a promotion with the location-based social network, and <a href="http://blog.foursquare.com/2011/03/07/follow-big-boi-unlock-a-golden-ticket-badge-party-with-him-and-pepsi-max-at-sxsw/" target="_blank">handing out "golden tickets" to his Austin show</a>. Kanye West's new <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAfFfqiYLp0" target="_blank">video</a> for 'All of the Lights' features, well, a lot of lights -- so many, in fact, that it could <a href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2011/02/24/134031825/kanye-west-video-is-pulled-elsewhere-tweets-start-furor?ft=1&amp;f=1049" target="_blank">cause some people to have seizures</a>. Epilepsy Action, a U.K.-based awareness organization, has reportedly urged YouTube to pull the video, claiming that the strobe light-intensive clip had already elicited seizures in viewers with certain epileptic conditions. YouTube duly removed the video, before re-posting it with the following disclaimer: "WARNING: This video has been identified by Epilepsy Action to potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised." Watch with caution.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/25/kanyes-all-of-the-lights-video-can-trigger-seizures-epilepsy/">Kanye's 'All of the Lights' Video Can Trigger Seizures, Epilepsy Group Says</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 12:40:00 EST. Thanks to the engineering impresarios at Toyota, those <a href="http://www.switched.com/2009/12/02/terrifying-school-girl-robot-dances-elicits-cowering-and-whimpe/">unguided hordes</a> of boogying <a href="http://www.switched.com/2009/11/12/robots-dance-to-the-beat-and-into-our-hearts/">robot dancers</a> finally have mechanical musicians to move them. The company's updated 'Partner' 'bots recently demonstrated their <a href="http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2011-02/toyotas-humanoid-minstrels-take-stage-tokyo-trumpeting-robots-mastery-music" target="_blank">automated violin and trumpet skills</a>, both solo and with human accompaniment, at the Robot &amp; Human Concert in Tokyo. Despite its impressive skills, the violin-'bot will still require years of dedicated <strike>training</strike> programming before its can rival <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mRG2oAQhso&amp;feature=related" target="_blank">this technological violin master</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/23/toyota-partner-bots-show-off-their-violin-and-trumpet-skills/">Toyota 'Partner' Bots Show Off Their Violin and Trumpet Skills</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Wed, 23 Feb 2011 16:40:00 EST. In case you hadn't noticed, <a href="http://www.switched.com/2010/12/31/switched-weighs-in-gadgets-apps-and-tech-that-made-our-2010/">physical media are dying</a>. Digital audio files long ago replaced CDs, movies are regularly available to stream, and games will download at the click of a mouse. There's no more reason to ever run to your local Best Buy . But there is still something alluring about physically touching your content source (just ask a vinyl fetishist). Jordi Parra, a Spanish design student, decided to combine that physical charm with digital convenience by creating a <a href="http://blog.zenona.com/" target="_blank">Spotify player</a>, which streams tracks identified by small discs embedded with <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/RFID">RFID</a> tags.<br />
<br />
Constructed of wood and plastic, Parra's Spotify radio has a decidedly analogue feel. While it takes its external design queues from old transistor radios, an <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/arduino">Arduino</a> processor resides inside, reading the tokens' RFID tags and looking for their associated music in the <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/spotify">Spotify</a> database. The device is a prototype constructed as his Masters thesis in Interactive Design at the Umea Institute of Design. Parra hopes to keep the project alive and wants to create a standalone version with an embedded version of Linux, Spotify and a speaker. (The current model actually plays the tunes through a computer; it must be connected via USB or Bluetooth.) To feast your eyes on more of the stunning creation check out the gallery below.<br />

While the album is more expensive than the pay-what-you-want 'In Rainbows,' this $48 opus is <a target="_blank" href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/15/radiohead-king-of-limbs-newspaper-album/">fully loaded</a>: two 10-inch vinyl records, 625 pieces of artwork and, of course, the MP3 version. For the thrifty, the digital download is available for $9 now. Check out the eerie, dreamy video for the album's first single, 'Lotus Flower,' after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/18/radiohead-king-of-limbs-download-out-lotus-flower/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Radiohead Album Debuts Early. <a target="_blank" href="http://www.athinline.org/drawyourline">MTV, Facebook and Justin "The Beebs" Bieber have launched Draw Your Line</a>, a campaign to track and discourage acts of cyberbullying. While we hate cyberbullying as much as the next blog, we have to question the inclusion of Justin Bieber, as it reminds us of those old anti-drug specials featuring the Ninja Turtles. Clang your way through the end of your work day by plugging your favorite tunes into <a href="http://bells.tellart.com/" target="_blank">Tellart's nifty 'Bells!' site</a>. By merely dragging those little virtual bells into position, you'll trigger an Arduino processor that plays the genuine articles right there in Tellart's Rhode Island office (watch in your browser!). We figured out AC/DC's 'You Shook Me All Night Long,' and were pleasantly surprised.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/17/tellart-bells-make-actual-music-virtually/">Make Actual Music Virtually With Tellart's 'Bells!'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Thu, 17 Feb 2011 07:30:00 EST. Just a few hours after Oreo <a href="http://mashable.com/2011/02/15/oreo-guinness-record/" target="_blank">announced</a> that it was pursuing a world record for the most Facebook "likes" in 24 hours, Lil Wayne decided to crash the party, and blew the cookie company out of the water. As of right now, Weezy has already garnered more than 480,000 likes on his <a href="http://www.facebook.com/LilWayne/posts/135207573211169" target="_blank">status</a>, while <a href="http://www.facebook.com/oreo" target="_blank">Oreo's status</a> has attracted a little over 110,000. Wayne's digital manager, Mazy Kazerooni, says the rapper's record should stand as a testament to his immense popularity in the social mediasphere. "I want people to think 'Bieber, Gaga and Lil Wayne,'" Kazerooni told Mashable. "The <a href="http://mashable.com/2011/02/15/lil-wayne-oreo/" target="_blank">traffic we do is ridiculous</a> and no one really knows."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/16/lil-wayne-vs-oreo-facebook-likes-record/">Lil Wayne Competes With Oreo for Facebook 'Likes' Record, Apocalypse Looms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Wed, 16 Feb 2011 09:15:00 EST. It's been more than a decade since the Flaming Lips released 'Zaireeka' -- an album consisting of four CDs meant to be played simultaneously. Now, Wayne Coyne &amp; Co. have applied <a target="_blank" href="http://pitchfork.com/news/41570-listen-flaming-lips-crazy-12-part-youtube-song/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed:+PitchforkLatestNews+(Pitchfork:+Latest+News)">essentially the same concept</a> to YouTube. <br />
<br />
Yesterday, the band released <span style="text-decoration: underline;">"</span><a target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/flaminglipsfree">Two Blobs Fucking</a>," a song that's divided into 12 separate YouTube clips meant to be played at the same time. Sounds like a pretty cumbersome way to hear music, but the Lips claim that their technique only enhances the listening experience. "The more devices, the more harmonic possibilities can be constructed," the group explained, in a press release. "You and your device, at one with the music, become the orchestra, just as the Gods of Technology naturally intended it to be."<br />
<br />
To become one with the Flaming Lips' new track, get 11 of your friends (and their devices) in the same room, head over to the band's <a target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/flaminglipsfree">YouTube channel</a>, and press play.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/15/flaming-lips-release-song-12-youtube-clips/">The Flaming Lips Release New Song, Divided Into 12 YouTube Videos</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Tue, 15 Feb 2011 10:45:00 EST. For their next record, <a href="http://www.switched.com/2008/07/15/new-radiohead-video-filmed-with-lasers/">the technologically driven members</a> of Radiohead apparently <a target="_blank" href="http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011-02/14/radiohead-king-of-limbs"> want to pay homage</a> to a noticeable victim of the Internet Age -- the newspaper. According to Wired, Radiohead has labeled its upcoming record 'The King of Limbs' as "the world's first newspaper album," and will fittingly release it in a variety of editions. <br />
<br />
You'll be able to purchase digital copies online (<a href="http://www.switched.com/2008/10/16/radioheads-music-experiment-hailed-as-huge-success/">for a set price this time</a>) on February 19th. Physical editions, reportedly packed with artwork and other "goodies," will start shipping out on March 9th. Basic digital downloads will reportedly run around $10, while the loaded physical packages will cost approximately $50. The band hasn't specifically addressed what exactly constitutes a "newspaper album," but "the world's <em>first"</em>? Ian Anderson and his Jethro Tull bandmates <a target="_blank" href="http://www.electronichouse.com/slideshow/category/9050/1257">might have a little something to say about that</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/15/radiohead-king-of-limbs-newspaper-album/">Radiohead Eliminates Freebies With New 'Newspaper' Album</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Tue, 15 Feb 2011 06:30:00 EST. A hormonally charged group of Justin Bieber acolytes stormed the Internet last night, high on puberty and out for blood. The victim? Grammy upset Esperanza Spalding, who surprised exactly everyone when she won the award for Best New Artist last night, "stealing" the win from the Canadian heartthrob. The Beliebers set upon <a href="http://gawker.com/#!5759473/bieber-fans-attack-esperanza-spaldings-wikipedia-page" target="_blank">Spalding's Wikipedia page</a>, adding racist remarks and insults. We'd like to point out: the award was for best <em>new</em> artist, not seriously overplayed, overexposed teen idol.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/14/bieber-fans-hack-esperanza-spalding-wikipedia-page/">Bieber Fans Make Esperanza Spalding's Wikipedia 'Pay' for Grammy Upset</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Mon, 14 Feb 2011 11:10:00 EST. Sometimes aging computer components can be repurposed to create <a href="http://www.switched.com/2008/06/07/antiquated-hardware-used-to-masterfully-remix-radioheads-nude/">beautiful music</a>, but most of the time they simply make a <a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/07/music-of-malfunctioning-disks/">terrifying racket</a>. Thankfully, this video is evidence of the former. YouTube user FunToTheHead arranged Bach's <a target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmoDLyiQYKw&amp;feature=player_embedded">'Toccata and Fugue' for a floppy drive quartet</a>, with four drives blasting one of the most iconic melodies ever concocted.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/10/floppy-drive-quartet-plays-toccata-and-fugue/">'Toccata and Fugue' Arranged for Floppy Drive Quartet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Thu, 10 Feb 2011 16:00:00 EST. It might seem crazy, but it's true. A <a href="http://datacent.com/datarecovery/hdd/western_digital" target="_blank">disk on the verge of disaster makes telltale noises</a> that could tip you off in time to save your data. The trouble is knowing what to listen for. Some are obvious -- like beeps, clicks, scratching -- but others are much more subtle. Data recovery company Data Cent has compiled a database of sounds that hard drives make when they're about to fail, along with suggestions on what may specifically be causing the trouble. The hope is that, if you're able to identify the sound of a troubled disk, you'll be able to offload your data before it's too late. The list of drives and potential problems is already rather daunting, and Data Cent only plans to keep expanding the database. So head on over to the Hard Drive Sounds page, and familiarize yourself with the terrifying music of your data dying (1,000 times scarier than any <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_metal#The_second_wave" target="_blank">Norwegian black metal band</a>).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/07/music-of-malfunctioning-disks/">The Music of Malfunctioning Disks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Mon, 07 Feb 2011 17:00:00 EST.
