So all those rumors about a Facebook phone turned out to be wrong. There are a ton of Facebook phones in the pipeline! Mark Zuckerberg popped up in a pre-recorded (and extraordinarily creepy) video at HTC's press event at Mobile World Congress yesterday, to announce that his company had worked closely with the Android wizards at HTC to tightly integrate Facebook with Sense (HTC's custom Android skin). The first two devices to market will be the HTC Salsa and HTC ChaCha, decidedly low-end devices running Gingerbread on top of bargain hardware. Both phones pack 512MB of RAM and 600Mhz, single-core processors -- the Atrix 4G these are not. The ChaCha features a 2.6-inch, 480x320 screen above a full QWERTY keyboard, while the Salsa keeps the lowly 480x320 resolution, but ditches the keyboard in favor of a 3.4-inch touch panel. At the bottom of both devices, though, you'll find a context-sensitive Facebook button for quickly sharing what your doing.

The level of integration between Facebook and Sense on the devices is deep -- perhaps too deep. Any time you place a call to or receive a call from a Facebook friend, the screen will display their latest photos and status updates, and alert you if their birthday is approaching. (OK, maybe that last one is useful.) Facebook chats and messages even get lumped in with your text messages and e-mail. Europe and Asia will get the first pair of Facebook phones during the second quarter of 2011, while American customers will have to wait until some point "later this year" for AT&T and HTC to bring the devices to market. Pricing wasn't announced, but we expect these handsets to be priced to move. $50 with a 2-year contract is probably a safe bet.
First Two 'Facebook Phones' Announced, Expect Plenty More originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 15 Feb 2011 10:00:00 EST. An Atlanta, Georgia man has his cell phone to thank for saving his life.

John Garber, a parking attendant at a local nightclub, was shot in the chest by two men after one of them was thrown out of the club earlier in the evening. Garber was struck in the breast, but his cell phone deflected the bullet. (A 'Ha!' to naysayers who thought the Evo was too bulky.) He sustained only minor injuries, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

"You owe me a new cell phone," Garber told his boss at National Parking after his HTC Evo failed to survive the attack. This isn't the first time that a cell phones has doubled as a bulletproof vest, so perhaps now we'll start carrying ours in our shirt pockets. Just to be safe.
Continue reading HTC Evo Deflects Bullet Aimed at Chest, Saves Nightclub Valet's Life

HTC Evo Deflects Bullet Aimed at Chest, Saves Nightclub Valet's Life originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 07 Jan 2011 11:35:00 EST. It seems like forever ago that Microsoft wowed us with the first public glimpses of Windows Phone 7. (Back then, it still had a "series" tacked on the end.) Since that day in February, we've been waiting with bated breath to see some fully functioning hardware. Now the waiting is over. We've seen the line up, we have the carriers, and we even have dates and prices (for some models, anyway). The first Windows Phone 7 device available in the U.S. will be the Samsung Focus. The super AMOLED packing device will be landing November 8th on AT&T at the industry standard $199.99. The Focus will be followed "a few weeks later," according to AT&T's Ralph de la Vega, by the HTC Surround and the LG Quantum, the latter of which packs a landscape, slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

T-Mobile will also be getting in on the Windows Phone 7 action in the U.S. While firm launch dates and prices have not been announced, you can bet that the HTC HD7 and Dell Venue Pro (with its portrait, slide-out keyboard) will be landing soon after the Focus, and will likely match the $199.99 price point. In addition to the five U.S. handsets, Windows Phone 7 will introduce four other devices, from HTC, Samsung and LG, to the European and global markets. The LG Optimus 7, Samsung Omnia 7, HTC 7 Trophy and 7 Mozart bring the grand total of phones to nine. If you count the announced 7 Pro for Sprint, which is landing in 2011, Microsoft smartphones have reached market saturation on day one. As soon as we can, we'll be back with a full review of a Windows Phone 7 handset, but, until then, check out the videos after the break.
When Steve Jobs suggested that you buy Android if you want porn, we didn't think that the Google OS would make it this easy. As with the PSP and the LG Chocolate before it, one unsuspecting consumer bought an Android-powered Evo 4G that was preloaded with porn.

Rhonda Lee walked into a Sprint store in Westland, Michigan (just west of Detroit), and picked up what she thought was a brand new phone. While selling phones unwrapped from their plastic sleeves is standard practice, most of the accessories are still sealed when the device is handed over to the consumer. Yet, the power adapter and other cables that came packed with Lee's Evo were opened. This should have set off alarms, but she thought nothing of it, and went about her day.
Continue reading 'New' HTC Evo Allegedly Sold Preloaded With Porn

'New' HTC Evo Allegedly Sold Preloaded With Porn originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 09 Jul 2010 12:20:00 EST. When Google launched the Nexus One way back in January, the smartphone was supposed to be a serious contender against the iPhone, and was expected to serve as exemplar of the Android handset. By circumventing the carriers' brick-and-mortar stores, Google also hoped to usher in a new era in cell phone sales; however, it appears to have doomed itself to obscurity, instead. With no presence in AT&T or T-Mobile shops or websites, and no television marketing campaign to speak of, it seems the Nexus One has slipped under the radar of most. While a few people correctly answered that it was, in fact, "the Google phone," most guesses were, understandably, just shots in the dark.
Continue reading Is Google's Nexus One Doomed to Obscurity? The first U.S.'s first 4G smartphone is officially available this morning. The HTC Evo 4G can be snagged for $199 (after a mail-in rebate) when you sign a two year contract with Sprint. With a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, a 4.3-inch touchscreen, an 8-megapixel camera capable of recording HD video, a front facing camera for video calls and HDMI out, the spec sheet of the Evo 4G reads like a geek's wet dream. But now that the phone is for sale, and first reviews have hit the tubes, it's time to find out if the Evo is worth running out to purchase.

HTC's Evo 4G won't officially hit the market until June 4th, but Engadget got an early chance to review Sprint's new superphone. The comprehensive rundown includes information on everything from the packaging to the individual specs, and the fortunate (and almost overwhelmingly glowing) reviewers found its aesthetics "extraordinarily sexy," its specs "magnificent," and the 4G signal (when available) "straight-up epic."
The tweens have apparently managed to outsmart and out-tweet Twitter. The site recently implemented a new "trending topics" algorithm to eliminate certain teeny-bopper mainstays like Justin Bieber and Nick Jonas, but the crap-pop fans have merely interchanged letters to keep the folks on the ticker. While there is depressingly no sign of Mick Jagger or 'Exile on Main Street,' "Jieber" is currently trending worldwide, ahead of the Gulf oil catastrophe.
Google's Street View feature has been plagued by privacy complaints since its inception, but the turmoil is certainly escalating, both at home and abroad. Google's admission of guilt in the ongoing Street View data scandal has now been followed by an official, refreshingly un-corporate mea culpa, as co-founder Sergey Brin conceded that, "We screwed up. I'm not going to make any excuses about it." Germany has already ordered the site to relinquish a hard drive that contains stored information from Street View tours, and two separate Oregon residents are also reportedly suing the site because of captured data.
The iPad has been available domestically for almost two months, but shoppers in foreign markets have been forced to endure an extensive waiting period. Even though its global debut was initially set for May 28th, European and Australian tweeters are tweeting that iPad apps are now internationally available.
Rumors of a Verizon iPhone continue to gain momentum, but AT&T reportedly isn't too concerned about the long-awaited carrier diversity. According to Wired, AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega seemed dismissive about the possible repercussions to his company's customer base, despite AT&T's consistently abysmal satisfaction rankings.
After four long years, Sony and Microsoft are finally catching up to Nintendo's revolutionary motion control system. While Microsoft definitely still lags behind its rivals, a new round of conjecture indicates that its Project Natal will eventually hit the market in October. More details should emerge at June's E3 event. [From: Engadget]

Playboy is becoming the latest print publication to capitalize on the 3-D frenzy, as its June issue will reportedly feature a 3-D spread of Playmate of the Year Hope Dworaczyk. Dworaczyk beat everyone to the inevitable and obligatory "Busting out" and "3-DD" jokes, when she quipped, "It's kind of like it says on the rearview mirror. Things may appear larger."
Facebook's unceasing changes and privacy issues aren't just resonating with the site's vocal minority. The folks at Search Engine Land performed a bit of investigating on Google, and discovered a sharply rising trend in "delete facebook account" searches. When searching for "how do I," the site's auto-match feature also offers "How do I delete my Facebook account" as one of the top choices.
If the rumors are true, HBO is experimenting with an online viewing program for subscribers, and new reports indicate that Showtime may soon follow suit. The network is currently remaining silent, though, as spokesperson Johanna Fuentes reportedly deferred, saying, "There's nothing to announce at this time."
AT&T and Apple exclusivity has long been a source of contention for iPhone owners and prospective purchasers. Rumors have certainly abounded concerning the lack of carrier diversity, and the Engadget snoops may have uncovered exactly why it has taken so long to integrate the iPhone. According to court documents from a 2007 class-action lawsuit, "AT&T has exclusive U.S. distribution rights for five years," a period which began in 2007.
Earlier this year, Sprint revealed the HTC EVO 4G, its impressive and groundbreaking new smartphone. The company is apparently more than satisfied with this "monster" model, as it's completely passing over Google's Nexus One in favor of HTC's high-end handset. While AT&T and Verizon have been duking it out over who has the most 3G coverage and firing iPhone, Droid, and Nexus One salvos at each other, Sprint has been quietly sitting back waiting to deliver its unexpected coup de grâce. Yesterday, at the CTIA mobile event in Vegas, the second tier provider announced the first 4G phone available in the U.S. -- and it's a monster.

The Android 2.1 powered, HTC Evo 4G runs on Sprint's young WiMax network that can (theoretically) deliver download speeds up to 10-times faster than current 3G technology. In addition to the promise of blazing data speeds, the Evo packs what may be the highest-end hardware we've seen in a phone. Like the Nexus One, the Evo has a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor and 512Mb of RAM (just a few short years ago that would have been impressive in a desktop PC), but it ups the built-in storage to 1 GB and bumps the screen size up a full half an inch to 4.3 inches. The large screen is put to good use by HTC's custom Sense UI skin, which makes extensive use of large widgets for delivering information at a glance.
Continue reading HTC Evo Brings 4G-Powered Android Superphone to Sprint

HTC Evo Brings 4G-Powered Android Superphone to Sprint originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 24 Mar 2010 13:25:00 EST. Highlights from this morning's other big tech headlines....

ChatRoulette, the spontaneous online video interaction service, has exploded in popularity but has also given rise to an epidemic of exaggeration and hyperbole. Worried that children will be exposed to sexual deviants, various organizations are labeling the site as a "predator's paradise." But, there's one easy solution to that troubling possibility: monitor and restrict your child's Internet usage! [From: FOX News]

Back in October, Apple sued Nokia over patent infringement issues, and now the pride of Cupertino, California is setting its sights on HTC. Apple is reportedly suing the company over 20 specific patents, because, as CEO Steve Jobs declared, "competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours." Pwnd. [From: Engadget]

Asus has officially unveiled its DR-900 e-reader, and the model features a 9-inch touchscreen and 4 gigabytes of storage. The company is expected to release price and availability information soon. [From: Engadget]

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 Series has been building hype since being announced at Mobile World Congress, but the new OS has alienated at least one portion of the company's customer base. HTC's gorgeous HD2 smartphone apparently won't be eligible for a Windows 7 software upgrade because it has too many buttons. [From: APC]

The Internet obviously revolutionized the smut industry. The Web, though, is also apparently damaging the porn biz through the proliferation of video sharing sites, where freeloaders upload unauthorized content. Steven Hirsch, the founder of Vivid Entertainment, asserted, "This is the worst I've seen in this industry in 25 years." [From: USA Today]

Twitter played an integral role in assessing and covering the damage from the Haitian earthquake, and Chileans also turned to the site after their nation experienced a similar disaster. Chile reportedly ranks fourth in the world in terms of social networking activity, and those networkers immediately utilized Twitter to spread vital information about injured and missing victims, relief areas, food, water, and transportation. [From: USA Today]

This winter has been intensely polarizing for Twitter, as its instrumental and positive role in the response to the Haitian and Chilean earthquakes has been somewhat offset by incessant direct message scams. The latest scheme involves the de facto technique of enticing users to click on a fake link that directs them to a phony Twitter log-in screen. It's only been a week since its release, but already it seems the Nexus One's pink fluffy cloud has dissipated. Practically since the moment the first consumer got his or her hands on the device, complaints have come flying from all directions.

The first of those complaints, and perhaps the most worrisome for the average user, is the device's reportedly flaky 3G connection. Google support forums are filled with tales of the smartphones constantly switching between 3G and EDGE, or failing to pick up a 3G signal entirely. And these all came from areas in which T-Mobile supposedly has solid 3G coverage. Further exacerbating the problem is confusion over where to turn for technical support. Although customers are buying the phone directly from Google, the search giant is currently offering support solely via e-mail. T-Mobile isn't selling the phone, so it's pointing customers to the phone's manufacturer, HTC. Bewilderingly, HTC is then directing the disgruntled users back to T-Mobile, since HTC isn't able to test potential network issues.
Continue reading Google Nexus One Garnering Heavy Criticism Over Fees, Tech Support

Google Nexus One Garnering Heavy Criticism Over Fees, Tech Support originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 12 Jan 2010 19:01:00 EST. AT&T is finally getting in on the Android party, promising to soon carry handsets from Motorola, HTC, and Dell. In total, five separate devices will be launching in the first half of 2010. Among those is the Dell Mini 3, which is the company's first smartphone and has only been available in China and Brazil. The Dell is a 3G- and GPS-enabled device with a 640x360 touchscreen and a 3-megapixel flash camera. While nothing is confirmed about the Motorola handset, we suspect that the "unique form factor" device is Motorola's QWERTY-keyboard-packing Backflip.

With two down, that means we can expect three Android-powered smartphones from HTC to come to "the nation's fastest 3G network." Again, no concrete information is known, but it's not hard to guess that at least one of those devices could be the lust-worthy Nexus One.
Continue reading Android and WebOS Phones Coming to AT&T

Android and WebOS Phones Coming to AT&T originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 06 Jan 2010 20:30:00 EST. Vodafone just scooped planet Earth with the first touchscreen-only Android phone: HTC's Magic. All the specs look to line up with what was rumored, with a 3.2-inch QVGA screen front and center (that resolution might be a typo, HVGA seems more likely), HDSPA, GPS, 3.2 megapixel camera (no flash), and a G1-style trackball. Details on pricing and availability will be unveiled for local Vodafone markets as they see fit, but pricing in Spain will be from 99 to 199 Euro, depending on contract.

Initial markets to nab the phone will be UK (due in April), Spain, Germany, France and Italy, with more countries to follow, and the phone will be a timed exclusive with Vodafone. Crazily enough, the phone has a proprietary headphone jack, proving once and for all that HTC doesn't like you, but at least this one will ship with a touchscreen keyboard out of the gate.

Update: We have confirmation that the device is indeed HVGA like the G1 before it, that's a typo on the original press release. More detailed specifications after the break.
Continue reading Second Google Phone, the HTC Magic, Debuts

Second Google Phone, the HTC Magic, Debuts originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 17 Feb 2009 10:12:00 EST.
Well, now isn't this something? Best Buy has its fancy little iPhone 3G, but it'll be Wally World offering up the G1 outside of official T-Mobile outlets. As we'd heard yesterday, 550 Wal-Mart stores across the country will begin selling the Android-powered handset beginning tomorrow, and folks who opt to pick one up here versus a traditional T-Mob store will save $31.11. Yep -- according to company spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien, the new / upgrade-eligible customer price for a Wal-Mart-sourced G1 will be just $148.88 with a 2-year agreement.

Wait, what? You already purchased your G1 at the full price? Bad news Google-philes, T-Mobile has stopped taking pre-orders for the Android-powered G1, at least for now. Apparently, demand for for the new handset has been so high that T-Mobile has ceased being able to even estimate when you might be able to get your hands on the device. Attempting to order the device results in this message being displayed: "Sorry! Due to the overwhelming popularity of the new T-Mobile G1, upgrades are temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

Of course, the G1 is only available to existing T-Mobile customers right now -- will HTC be able to keep up with demand once they start selling this thing unlocked in a couple of months? Snap -- looks like the Android-powered T-Mobile G1 is peeking out a little early in the form of a non-working pre-registration link on the my.t-mobile.com customer portal. The New York Times is reporting that T-Mobile will be the first carrier to offer Android. According to "people briefed on the company's plans," the HTC phone will go on sale in the US "before Christmas, perhaps as early as October." The NYT's sources also say that the 5-row QWERTY slider from that Dream video (embedded after the break) matches the HTC device that T-Mobile will sell. The device is still waiting for FCC approval with a three-way Google, T-Mobile, and HTC announcement coming as early as September. The deal is expected to be exclusive making it the only Android phone available in the US this year.

Of course you know what this means? It's the birth of the Android fanboy -- sure you love 'em at First!, but then they never shutup about Street View.

Update: We've added a second video (from March) of what looks to be the same device demonstrated by Google's own Andy Rubin. The 3G reference design runs a 400MHz Qualcomm MSM 7200-based processor at just over 300MHz, includes a trackball, 3D graphics processor, and appears to have an HTC logo. Call it Raphael no longer! HTC has officially thrown the cover off its Touch Pro today -- the QWERTY slider sibling of the recently-unveiled Touch Diamond -- which should cover the bases for those who loved the Diamond's keen looks but decided they'd go our of their gourds without a full set of physical keys at their disposal.

Under that glossy black shell lies Wi-Fi, HSPA with a solid 7.2Mbps on the downstream, Bluetooth, 2.8-inch VGA display, Windows Mobile 6.1 featuring HTC's TouchFLO 3D interface, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a half gig of ROM, and 288MB of RAM. It's not going to win any "world's thinnest" records with an 18.05mm waistline, but those five rows of textual healing don't come without a price. The first batch of devices will be Europe-bound in "late summer" with 900 / 2100MHz 3G alongside the quadband GSM and EDGE; North and Latin American versions are promised for later in the year.

For more images of the HTC Pro, don't miss Engadget's gallery. Here we are in London at the Soho Hotel with HTC, and we are among the first to see their new Diamond handset. While we thought we may see three new products in three different form factors, HTC Prez and CEO Peter Chou led-off the event by mentioning that they would be launching just one product today. He peppered his intro by talking about the Touch, so we were prepared to see an update on that product utilizing their TouchFLO tech.

The device has some pretty nice interface tech that they're calling TouchFLO 3D that heavily emphasizes one-touch browsing and single-finger dialing. They emphasized web accessibility, zoom-in navigation with "just one hand" and not too many fingers. As expected, the device is loaded with Windows Mobile 6.1, a VGA screen and HSDPA 7.2, among other nice specs.

Updates, specs, and pics after the break!

Expanded Coverage at Engadget:

In its continuing effort to stem the exodus of subscribers to competing mobile phone service and data providers, Sprint Nextel is providing an upgrade to one of its handsets to allow access to a faster upload and download network called EV-DO Rev. A.

Sprint is the first of the mobile providers to allows a phone to utilize this particular network, which should double download speeds and increase upload speeds by eight times. The phone, called Mogul (Product Specs) and made by Taiwanese handset company HTC, can be upgraded by going to the HTC Web site.

EV-DO Rev. A, which stands for Evolution-Data Optimized Revision A, is also used by Verizon Wireless but so far only for its data cards, which are inserted into laptop computers to allow Internet access while travelling anywhere within the wireless coverage area. As for right now, Verizon says it will not make any of its phones EV-DO Rev. A capable, instead saying its laptop subscribers are the only customers who really need the faster upload and download speeds for e-mail and file transfer. Whether the carrier changes its approach following the Sprint announcement remains to be seen.

To date, Sprint's phones have been able to access only the older and slower EV-DO Rev. 0.

Sprint is trying several new initiatives in an attempt to stop its subscribers from leaving. Just last month, the troubled company announced a $99 unlimited service plan. Sprint lost $29.5 billion during the last fiscal quarter, due in large part to the ungainly integration of Nextel as well as to the hemorrhaging of subscribers, who have complained of terrible customer service and problems with dropped calls.

AT&T has several phone models available that can connect to its high-speed network, called HSDPA, which stands for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access. It has similar upload and download speeds at EV-DO Rev A.

From AOL Money & Finance.

Related Links:

We couldn't make it out to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona -- a big international cell-phone conference focused mainly on GSM-style world phones -- but our good friends over at Engadget were able to make the trek and are sending back reports from the front line of cellular and mobile computing technologies.

All the usual suspects are there, Samsung, Nokia, even Motorola are showing off some of their 2008 handset lineups. The most innovative stars of the show, however, are unquestionably the new Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 and the Google-backed, Linux based smart phone operating system Android.

Take a look at Engadget's comprehensive coverage, and check back here for some more selective highlights.

From Engadget

Related Links:
Well after months, -- nay, years of rumors the Google Phone (or gPhone) is upon us... almost. On a conference call this afternoon, Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google; Andy Rubin founder of Danger, the company behind the Sidekick and founder of Android, a mobile software company gobbled up by Google; and representatives of Motorola, HTC, T-Mobile, and many others revealed an open-source mobile platform that may actually, finally, live up to the title "iPhone Killer."

Today's announcement was not the unveiling of an actual gPhone, but the announcement of a mobile platform, called Android, to be used by the 33 companies that make up what is called the Open Handset Alliance.

The Android mobile OS is built on Linux and comes packaged with a user friendly interface and applications. In addition, the open nature of Android means plenty of powerful third-party applications will follow.

The software will be made freely available within a week and we can expect to see phones sporting the OS in the second half of 2008. Part of the draw of Android is a "very robust HTML web browser," according to Eric Schmidt, likely based on Firefox.

Schmidt also left the door open on the question of whether Google is still planning on developing its own branded cell phone. "We're not announcing anything, but this is THE (perfect) platform for building a gPhone."

Oh Google, will you ever stop playing coy?

Contrary to speculation, the platform will not be completely ad-driven (note the "completely"). Instead we expect Google is hoping that by giving away a full-featured OS with a "very robust" browser they can draw more users to their web services where they will be served advertisements.

Using Android will save handset makers money that would normally be used on purchasing licenses for Symbian or Windows Mobile, or for developing their own platform. We can only hope that this will allow them to spend more on phone hardware or cut the price of the handsets.

Android sounds promising, but only time will tell if Google has another Gmail on its hands, or a failure like its lagging social network Orkut.

From Engadget

Related links:

With the announcement that it would offer the HTC Touch come November 4th, Sprint proved that it's still capable of releasing first-to-the-gate, innovative phones for its network. The touch-screen enabled handheld is definitely designed to be the hands-on iPhone-killer for the Windows Mobile 6 set, not only because of its smart phone features (seamless integration with your e-mail, full office document editing and viewing, Windows Media Player) but also because its touch screen is almost as innovative as the iPhone's -- almost.

The HTC Touch's big claim to fame is "TouchFLO Technology," which is really just a fancy name for a 3D cube interface that users maneuver around by swiping their finger. It's basically the iPhone with different visuals, and a more powerful and versatile, though sometimes glitchier, operating system (OS).

We played around with the unlocked GSM version of the HTC Touch a few months back, but didn't see what all the fuss was about beyond a gee-whizzy touch screen with different animations than the iPhone. But we also didn't have all the apps a carrier can provide, so we're excited to check out the official Sprint Touch, which will have access to the Sprint Music Store (for direct-to-phone downloads), Sprint TV, streaming Sirius satellite radio, and on-demand news and sports information.

Now, before we complain too much, let's mention the many ways this phone is better than the iPhone Surprisingly, most of these have less to do with the touted touchscreen and more with the overall specs, such as the 2.0-megapixel camera (versus the iPhone's 1.3 megapixel), high-speed 3G EV-DO capability for fast downloading and Web surfing (versus the iPhone's slower EDGE network), stereo Bluetooth capability (for wireless headphones and speakers), and expandable/removeable memory (MicroSD cards).

And let's not forget that it's only $249.99 (with a two-year contract).

We're anxious to try out the spiffy new Sprint-enabled HTC Touch to see if it lives up to the hype. We'll report back later.

Related Links:

Ok, so it's not the 'Centro.' In fact, it appears Palm is even keeping the "Treo" moniker that was supposed to go the way of the dodo. How or why they landed on the Treo 500 name is beyond us, but here it is in all its glory: The Windows Mobile Standard-rocking Treo 500.

The thicker-than-the-BlackJack Treo 500 sports nothing in the way of innovative features. In fact, the handheld is a huge step backwards for Palm, since Windows Mobile Standard means no touch screen, a first for a Treo. In fact, the only positive thing about the Treo 500 is the inclusion of 3G high-speed wireless data, though the specific flavor of 3G in the 500 is not compatible with US networks. With Samsung and HTC making such solid devices, Palm is going to have to step up its game.

It's sad to say, but it looks like we may be seeing the beginning of the end for Palm. Their supposedly revolutionary device, Foleo, was killed before it saw daylight. Palm had a big unveiling for that device, and most people just scratched their heads, disappointed supporters got vocal, and ultimately Palm killed the device.

And that was just the latest debacle for the suffering company. Its Linux-based successor to the Palm OS has been delayed again and again. After selling the same device with very minor adjustments for about 4 years straight (a decade in tech years), Palm has gone from industry-leader to laughingstock. And judging by the reaction around the Internets so far, the Treo 500 maybe dead on arrival. The 500 appears to be little more than a Dash or BlackJack with a Palm logo on it, and some pretty lackluster styling. Where is the Wi-Fi? The 3G for US users? The high-resolution screen? And most importantly, Palm, where's the touch screen?

Well Palm, it's been nice knowing you. It's been a long, strange trek together. Who knows? Maybe 10 years from now you'll stage an impressive resurgence similar to Apple's in the late '90s, but for now we think it's time to say goodbye.

From Engadget

Related links:

Sprint has announced The Mogul, a new smart phone that will join its ranks sometime in July. The Mogul has been rumored and discussed for quite some time, but for whatever reason Sprint was in making it official. The device, developed with HTC, sports a very HTC-like design with a sliding face that reveals a QWERTY keyboard.

Ready for some specs? It packs a 400 megahertz CPU, 64 megabytes of RAM for data storage, 256 megabytes of ROM for application data, 802.11b/g wireless, BlueTooth, a 2 megapixel camera, and a microSD expansion slot. Expect it to clock in at $399 with a 2 year contract.

From the iPhone to Microsoft's Surface, devices with touchscreen interfaces are all the rage these days. Now HTC, known for making top notch Windows Mobile phones like the T-Mobile Wing, is adding its own twist on the touchscreen boom with Touch Flo technology.

Touch Flo is a gesture-based input technology, which means you don't simply tap icons and buttons with your finger or stylus, but instead move your finger up and down or left to right to launch and close programs, switch menus, and the like. (When all is said and done, though, it sounds not that different from any other touchscreen, but we'll get back to you after we've tried it out in person.)

Otherwise the Windows Mobile 6 phone is standard smartphone fare, 2.8 inch color screen, 2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and EDGE.

Coming out in Asia and Europe this summer, the phone will be re-branded and released later this year on T-Mobile in the U.S.

From Beta News

Related Links:
