The LunchCommunicator, developed by Japanese researchers, packs a camera and touchscreen PC that automatically records the person making lunch and plays it back while the other party is eating it, and vice-versa. Maybe it'll make school kids more appreciative of their mothers' efforts, but it just kind of makes us uncomfortable. We figured the one place we didn't have to check for a spycam was our GoBots lunch box.
Now, Even Your Lunch Box is Watching You originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 17 Mar 2011 07:29:00 EST. Researchers in Germany have developed a new endoscopic camera that's cheap enough to be thrown away after each use, and small enough to see eye-to-eye with a grain of rice.

Designed at Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration, the prototype's camera is just one cubic millimeter in size, and features a resolution of 62,500 pixels. But researchers say it's still strong enough to capture vivid images of a patient's internal organs, and transmit them via an electrical cable, rather than the optical cable that most endoscopic cameras use.
Continue reading New Endoscopic Camera Is Disposable, Remarkably Tiny

New Endoscopic Camera Is Disposable, Remarkably Tiny originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 12:40:00 EST. Capitalizing on people's nostalgia for old Polaroid prints, a company called Breakfast will soon beta-test a location-based printer that will create inkless, on-demand photos from the Instagram iPhone app. Instaprint, as it's called, automatically prints photos that are taken with Instagram app and tagged with a specific location or hashtag. Next week, Breakfast will show off two printers to SXSW, where conference attendees can use the hashtag #SXSW. If you tag a photo with #instaprint before March 10th, you can watch the photo be printed and posted live on Instaprint's site. The photos are created with a thermal printing technology called ZINK -- which is also used in modern Polaroid prints --- that doesn't use ink. Aside from real-time printing, your photos will be archived online for your viewing pleasure, as well.
Continue reading Instaprint Creates Inkless, On-Demand Photo Prints From Instagram Snaps

Instaprint Creates Inkless, On-Demand Photo Prints From Instagram Snaps originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 09 Mar 2011 12:00:00 EST. Pelican Imaging has developed a prototype imaging system for cellphones with 25 tiny cameras, which take 25 separate pictures and combine those into one bigger, better image. Instead of using a single, large lens and sensor, Pelican's camera array technology uses multiple lenses and sensor to capture light images, adds some 3-D depth and gesture control, and could even let users manipulate a photo before or after it's taken (check out the video after the break to see how this could work). With the additional data provided by the array of sensors, you could salvage a blurry shot by refocusing hours after you've taken the shot. Of course, this tech is a ways off from hitting the market, so no need to get too excited -- yet.
Continue reading Camera Tech Could Let You Refocus Your Blurry Shot After You Take It

Camera Tech Could Let You Refocus Your Blurry Shot After You Take It originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 14 Feb 2011 08:30:00 EST. The camera, which streamed images to Bilal's website and to the Mathaf in Doha, Qatar, was implanted by a body modification artist (read: tattoo guy), but his immune system rejected it. (Also, he was in constant pain.) Bilal had the camera surgically removed on Friday, and is currently carrying it around his neck until he can get it re-implanted.
Skull-Camera Artist Undone by Skull Health Issues originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 10 Feb 2011 10:20:00 EST. To help parents monitor their young drivers, American Family Insurance is offering its customers the option to have a small video camera installed in their childrens' vehicles, free of charge. According to The Kansas City Star, the camera, which is mounted on the rearview mirror, records views of the person behind the wheel, and of the road ahead. If a driver makes an irregular move -- like whipping into another lane, stomping the brakes or crashing into something -- an analyst for DriveCam, Inc., the video firm behind this technology, can view a 20-second clip. After looking at the moments before, during and after the accident, the analyst determines whether or not the video should be sent to the teen's parents. Sandra Spann, a spokeswoman from the insurance company, told the Star that this video footage isn't typically used to settle claims or determine liability for customers. Instead, the idea is for parents and teens to sit down, look at the footage, and discuss what the teen was doing wrong, so that he or she doesn't make the same mistake in the future.

Of course, teens want their privacy and freedom behind the wheel. Driving unaccompanied is a rite of passage, and the fact that the DriveCam is always recording will likely annoy young drivers. But parents will only see footage from inside the car if their teen makes a mistake behind the wheel. Sorry kids, but you can't cry privacy violation as your folks watch you plowing over a mailbox because you were texting on your iPhone.
Continue reading Insurance Company's DriveCam Lets Parents Spy on Teen Drivers

Insurance Company's DriveCam Lets Parents Spy on Teen Drivers originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 26 Jan 2011 10:00:00 EST. Inspired by raindrops, a German software engineer created some dazzling photographs of ink bouncing off the surface of water, a phenomenon that would normally be invisible to the naked eye. According to The Daily Mail, amateur photographer Tobias Brauening rigged a circuit board to trigger a camera shutter, and to open three valves at the same moment. Each valve drops a different color of ink into a plastic tank filled with water. At the point of impact, the camera captures the three colors coming together and bouncing off the water. Obviously, it took trial and error to capture these amazing shapes and colors with such precision. "A collision of three drops needs accurate timing in a range of a few milliseconds," Brauening told the Daily Mail. If the ink drops too fast, or the shutter opens too late, that means Brauening would end up with ripples instead of an ink droplet -- each one looking like a glass mushroom, growing out of the water.
Multicolored Ink Droplets Bouncing Off Water Dazzle the Eyes originally appeared on Switched on Sat, 08 Jan 2011 10:00:00 EST. Lady Gaga returned to CES this year, reprising her role as top-billed celebrity eye candy and creative director for Polaroid. We waited, and waited -- just as we did last year -- to get a glimpse of the petite diva among a throng of sweaty journos, industry affiliates and even a greasy fan or two. Gaga finally appeared, after Polaroid Chairman Bobby Sager was literally booed off the stage by the increasingly angry horde, wearing an outfit and hairstyle significantly toned down from the hedgehog-starburst motif that she rocked last year. While the fashion was a bit of a letdown, she actually had products to debut this time.
As DSLR fanatics, we've been quietly and happily singing the death of point-and-shoots for a while now, but CES and Casio have brought news of a pocket-sized camera that verily throws our entire photographic belief system into question. Behold the Tryx, a piece of Transformer ingenuity that boasts three different configurations -- although, really, the possibilities are kinda endless. The three-inch touchscreen LCD pops out of the frame, which can be propped up as a tripod, or turned into a sort of anywhere-hanger to help shoot your combined remake of 'Man With a Movie Camera' and 'Koyaanisqatsi.'

A 12.1-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor and a 21-millimeter lens provide optimal picture quality and range for such a tiny cam (.59 inches thick!), which also shoots 1080p video, slow motion video (at speeds up to 240 fps), HDR snaps and 360-degree panoramas. The screen is touch-based, allowing for touch-shutter and touch-focus. But, really, the draw is the flexibility of Tryx's design. You can find better cameras that will give you the same features and more -- but they won't be able to effortlessly hang from a tree limb or prop themselves up on a park bench. Look for the Tryx when it's released in April, for $249.99.
The point-and-shoot camera has struggled in recent years as cell phone cameras have become increasingly powerful and mobile, but Eye-Fi still has faith in the dedicated camera. Known for its Wi-Fi-enabled memory cards, Eye-Fi is introducing a new Direct Mode for its line of X2 cards that lets you grab photos and video from your camera to transfer to your tablet or phone without any wires or multi-step uploads. Of course, you'll need to be running the Eye-Fi app on your mobile device, but that's a lot easier than dealing with cable and network clutter. The X2 cards, currently available, are scheduled to get a free Direct Mode update sometime in 2011.
Eye-Fi Direct Mode Lets You Send Photos Directly to Your Phone or Tablet originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 04 Jan 2011 09:41:00 EST. Defusing these spats can be a messy, and sometimes dangerous task, but it may be getting slightly easier, thanks to new computer vision systems that can automatically detect brewing violence from above.
As the New York Times explains, one such system uses artificial intelligence software to instantly analyze images fed from security cameras. The software is capable of recognizing the faces, gestures and movements of inmates, and can automatically pick up on signs of danger (e.g., if one group of prisoners begins moving toward another). Once the system senses trouble, it will automatically send a text-message alert to a correctional facilities officer, who can move in and cool tempers.
Continue reading Prisons Testing Computers Capable of Detecting, Defusing Riots

Prisons Testing Computers Capable of Detecting, Defusing Riots originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 03 Jan 2011 18:06:00 EST. The visionaries at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) never cease to amaze. MIT frequently produces innovative creations, and one of the university's research groups apparently hopes to revolutionize the field of digital photography. While digital-camera technology is already advancing at an astounding rate, the New York Times reports that MIT's Camera Culture department is currently developing software that could grant photographers with unprecedented powers.

This particular field of study (which involves developing manipulative camera technology, like high dynamic range) entails what's known as computational photography. The MIT computational crew has already constructed a portable 'Frankencamera' prototype that reportedly "runs on Linux, the open operating system." According to the Times, the device allows programmers to "play with the chips inside the camera that record and process images." Such devices could equip photographers with a range of impressive abilities, like seamlessly meshing two photographs, changing an already captured image's focus or finding the exact vantage point of a previous picture.
Continue reading MIT's 'Frankencameras' May Be Able to Peer Around Corners

MIT's 'Frankencameras' May Be Able to Peer Around Corners originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 21 Dec 2010 08:30:00 EST. If you weren't able to divine what exactly this product is from its ridiculously wonky title, we totally understand. But the awkwardly named Creative Live! Cam Socialize HD 1080 (CLCSHD1080, for short) is a webcam that captures high-definition 1080p video at 30fps, and can stream video chats at 720p (as long as your upstream Internet service provides 1 mbps or higher). Within the webcam world -- which is cluttered with cheapo, low-res models that never quite work like they're advertised -- the CLCSHD1080 is in a class of its own. It also has a 25-percent wider-angle glass lens (not true wide angle, which would distort your image when you sit close), and dual stereo microphones. We're on the fence about the benefits of its business card-scanning feature, whereby you pop a card into its scanning frame and it snaps a shot, processing the info into your choice of contact formats. But, it's still a value-add for the corporate types, at least. Skype fiends and video-chat aficionados won't find a better webcam anywhere near its fantastically affordable price.
We have every digit on our body crossed in hopes that a reputedly elderly, generous, affable and morbidly-obese elf looks our way and pops a Lumix GF1 in our stocking. Which is kind of the point: the GF1 is, to-date, the best overall mirrorless camera (one of the newfangled micro four-thirds models you've likely heard of) on the market, offering quality on par with some DSLR cameras in a body that's perfectly stocking sized. And pardon the pun, but that's no small feat -- we're talking small enough for a coat pocket when the wide-angle pancake lens is attached. Like a DSLR, the GF1 has full manual controls, interchangeable lenses and a hotshoe for flash or a viewfinder; in particular. It's is the fastest gun in the category in terms of focus speed and shutter lag. There are a few hitches though. The price we found is especially low, for the body only, and lenses start around $200 and up, but since the GF2 is due out soon we don't see prices rising any (and if anything, should continue to drop). Also you'll undoubtedly want to throw-down for the detachable viewfinder (about $135 online) instead of using the LCD. Still with package deals and a little haggling you may come away with one of the best cameras of the year for a steal -- just don't let Santa know.
Edward Horsford captured these high-speed images of water balloons at the precise moment they exploded -- and the results are truly incredible. As NPR explains, Horsford took the photos at night, in his own backyard, using a specially timed flash mechanism to get the absolutely perfect shot. A timer on his camera ensures a long exposure of one to two seconds, while an attached microphone mechanism instantly triggers the flash when it picks up the 'pop' of the balloon. Oh, and Horsford did this all by himself.

The unpredictable variability of each exploding balloon resulted in a wide array of breathtaking shots. Some show Horsford's hands holding what appears to be a floating orb of water. Others capture the balloon at the moment its skin begins to break, giving rise to what looks like a moldy grape. Take a moment to flip through his collection, and prepare to be blown away.
Continue reading Photo Captures Amazing High-Speed Photos of Exploding Water Balloons

Photo Captures Amazing High-Speed Photos of Exploding Water Balloons originally appeared on Switched on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 06:30:00 EST. Flip's award-winning series of mini high-definition camcorders are that magic hybrid of quality and simplicity we adore, and have become the iPod of its genre. The UltraHD is Flip's top-shelf offering, a lightweight, well-built and shirt pocket-ready HD video shooter that captures up to 2 hours of crisp 720p video at 60 frames per second (which means no motion blur) on its built-in 8 gigabytes of solid state storage. Blessedly this updated model was given much needed image stabilization, so your videos won't look like they're shot by grandpa's less than stable hands. Flip has also standardized an accessories port (much like Apple's dock connector) for use with forthcoming "Designed for Flip" add-on products like high quality microphones and the like. We especially like that if and when the included battery pack dies at an inconvenient moment, the UltraHD can be powered by AAA lithium batteries -- an option we wish all of our gadgets offered.
But, hey, we aren't hatin'. They get the job done, and allow low-budget mortals like us to go where only professionals have dared venture, deep into the drink with our precious point-and-shooters.

Using them is as straightforward as you'd guess. Just pop the locks on the seal, chuck in your camera, and seal it back up. You can now head into the water down to 15 feet or so. And, should you accidentally drop the camera, it'll float to the surface for easy retrieval. Depending on the size and type of your shooter (or camcorder), there are different bags available from as low as $30. For higher-performance gear like DSLR cameras, there are models with built-in, hard-plastic lenses, which facilitate much sharper images and video. To be fair, Aquapacs can't compete with the custom waterproof camera housings that the pros use, so you shouldn't expect high-def, flawless results. Still, we love not having to worry about getting our camera (or phone, or iPod, or camcorder) doused. And, hell, to be honest, we just wish we'd thought of making these first.
We are a proudly, deeply thrifty lot, no doubt about it. We're just as devoted to bargains as we are to selecting gear that offers maximum flexibility. Thus, we love Panasonic's Lumix DSM-TS2, a ruggedized, waterproof compact that is the camera equivalent of a room full of yoga masters.

The TS2 is a solid 14-megapixel point-and-shooter, making crisp shots and video a breeze even for amateurs, thanks to its Intelligent Auto mode. (And its pocket-ready dimension make it all the handier.) It happens to be a serious roughneck, as well, able to withstand being dropped, crushed, frozen and submerged (down to an amazing 30 feet) -- all without missing a beat, or a shot. That supplies you with peace of mind, of course, but also with the ability to snag images from your various adventures -- on land, air or sea -- that you'd never dare attempt with an unprotected camera. We look forward to the day when all of our gadgets are in such good shape.
Gift Guide: Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 Waterproof Camera for Under $300 originally appeared on Switched on Sat, 27 Nov 2010 12:01:00 EST. For under $800, you can get HD video, quality sensors, and enough megapixels to satisfy any spec-obsessed gadget fan. It's a great time to get into DSLR photography, and lenses are just as important as the body you buy. If you're new to Canon, or are interested in moving on from the stock kit lens, take a look at the budget-priced Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens.

Many DSLR newbies are thrilled by high-end zoom lenses, but you should take a second to consider the other end of the spectrum. Prime lenses, like the EF 50mm, may not offer the versatility of zoom lenses, but they are much faster and work better in low light conditions because of their fixed focal length. More than any kit lens and anything else under $400, the 50mm truly lets you experiment with depth of field. In other words, this lens gives you fine-grained control over what's in focus, allowing you to keep your subject's face in focus while completely blurring out the foreground and background.

Autofocus isn't perfect, and the plastic body won't survive falls, but the lightweight lens' portability, speed and depth-of-field control are unmatched at this price. You'll find it under $100 online, so mark it as a must for anyone who is new to DSLR photography or is looking for a new lens to develop their skills.
Gift Guide: Canon 50mm f/1.8 II, an Essential Lens for Under $100 originally appeared on Switched on Sun, 21 Nov 2010 11:00:00 EST. Networks, bandwidth and capabilities are varied enough within any given country (as will be confirmed by anyone who's tried to get an iPhone on Verizon), but they're an entirely new mess when you start crossing borders. So, if you plan on staying connected without bankrupting yourself, you might want to see if your phone can handle the trip -- and make sure you aren't signing away your first-born simply by turning it on.

Will My Phone Work?
First, we have a couple quick rules. if your phone is from Verizon or Sprint, there is a small likelihood of it being internationally compatible. Both use CDMA technology for their 3G networks, instead of the more widely supported GSM. (If you're concerned about globe-hopping, look for phones billed as "global ready" or "international." Unless your phone is labeled as such, you're probably out of luck.) T-Mobile and AT&T use GSM, and are more likely to get basic calling and texting while traveling abroad (unless you are going to Canada, which is pretty U.S.-friendly.) Double-checking by looking at your service provider's website is a great bet. Another option, if you would rather have your phone on a more regular basis, is to purchase a prepaid SIM card within the country in which you've landed. You won't keep your number, but you won't rack up roaming charges, either. In the worst-case scenario, a disposable cell phone works as well, and is much more "accepted" overseas than it is in the U.S. (probably due to the influx of travelers).
Continue reading Tech Traveling Tips: Avoid Roaming While Roaming Freely

Tech Traveling Tips: Avoid Roaming While Roaming Freely originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 18 Nov 2010 19:00:00 EST. Bilal, a new media artist and assistant professor at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, is going through the procedure as part of a project called 'The Third I.' For one year, the Iraqi professor's thumbnail-sized, implanted camera will capture images at one-minute intervals. These images will then be live-streamed to monitors at a new modern art museum in Qatar, which commissioned the project.

According to the museum, known as Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, the work is intended to be "a comment on the inaccessibility of time, and the inability to capture memory and experience." Some, however, are worried that Bilal's constantly clicking camera may violate the privacy of those it captures. Bilal, who is currently teaching three courses this semester, initially intended to keep his camera on at all times -- even when he's in the classroom, or interacting with students during office hours. The proposal didn't sit too well with some of his colleagues. "Obviously, you don't want students to be under the burden of constant surveillance," says Fred Ritchin, associate chairman of the photography and imaging department at Tisch. "It's not a good teaching environment."
Continue reading Artist to Surgically Implant Camera in the Back of His Head

Artist to Surgically Implant Camera in the Back of His Head originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 08:30:00 EST. Once you're across the seas, you'll start snapping photos, turning up your MP3 player, and blogging your adventures -- that is, until you run out of juice. Buying converters in the airport is always über-expensive, and being stuck without one when you need it is hair-pulling. Not sure if you should make the investment? Remember that voltage varies in different continents, and, if you have an electronic made for America (i.e., 110 volts), the 220-volt sockets found abroad could deliver quite a shock to your device. A converter makes sure that no excess electricity comes through.

Those wacky symbols you see on the wall in Deutschland? They aren't native markings; that's what the locals call a "socket." Plugs vary from country to country, and, to make sure you can insert your cord in the right way, you'll want an adapter. Adapter/converter packages, like the Travel Smart by Conair, are usually ideal. For a helpful, all-in-one guide, bookmark Current Solutions. Shocking, isn't it? (Hehe. Electricity puns.)
Tech Travel Tips: How to Keep Your Power Pumping originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 17:39:00 EST. Now, University of South Carolina researchers may actualize the next evolutionary stage in crime-scene analysis with the development of another futuristic photographic process. The University scientists hope to design an effective "blood camera" that could immediately detect the presence of blood in a room -- without the use of outside solvents.

According to New Scientist, the camera concept utilizes infrared light and a transparent, 8-micrometer-thick layer of albumin protein to immediately recognize the presence of blood or other pertinent substances. The system would negate possible sample contamination and false positives by eliminating the need for chemicals or human handlers. If scientists can also complete the development of cameras that immediately analyze blood and other substances, detectives could soon hold tiny, mobile, one-stop crime labs in their hands.
'Blood' Cameras Could Arm Detectives With Mobile Crime Labs originally appeared on Switched on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 08:30:00 EST. Your tickets are booked. Your bags are packed. Your passport's been dusted off. It's finally time to take off for that exotic vacation you so sorely deserve, and to totally disconnect from the rest of the world... sort of.

Sure, you probably won't want to spend too much time trolling through e-mails instead of strolling across the Île Saint-Louis. If you're like us, though, you'll still probably toss a couple of gadgets into your suitcase -- if only to flood your friends' feeds with tweets, photos and Facebook posts from the other side of the world. But, before you start haphazardly dumping your smartphone, laptop and e-reader into your Samsonite, you should remember to take care of some very forgettable things.
Continue reading Traveling Abroad? Four years ago, Peter Trayhurn and Geoff Tosio found themselves floating adrift five miles off the coast of Australia, and facing the terrifying possibility that they might never be found. They had been exploring underwater caves when the anchor line on their boat snapped, and the vessel drifted away. Miraculously, Trayhurn and Tosio were spotted by a ship, plucked from the water, and returned to their dive boat. Improbably, danger struck again when, on their way back to shore, a wave capsized their boat. The two diving buddies managed to climb back aboard and make it to safety, but their camera, with its documentation of their adventure and rescue, was lost -- seemingly forever.

Then, earlier this week, it washed ashore, nestled among the sand and seaweed, where a plumber named Steve Campbell found it -- still in its waterproof case. Campbell tracked down Trayhurn, who was understandably excited to get the photos back. He told The Today Show, "It's really unbelievable, it really lifted my day." Check out the video after the break.
Continue reading Camera Washes Ashore, Four Years After Ocean Rescue

Camera Washes Ashore, Four Years After Ocean Rescue originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 15:30:00 EST. The New York Times recounts the rise of these Little Big Brothers and their unceasing fight against neighborhood peepers, intruders, vandals and dog doo slingers. That fight doesn't just involve watching and finding a culprit, though, because this global YouTube Neighborhood Watch is all about abject humiliation. One victim uploaded a wacky, narrated musical video of his poo-hurling neighbor, and another created a variety of slapstick tributes to his next-door snoops.
Continue reading YouTube Vigilantes Shine a Spotlight on Nasty Neighbors

YouTube Vigilantes Shine a Spotlight on Nasty Neighbors originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 13:50:00 EST. That's because celebrity photo agency Splash News is developing a camera-equipped drone aircraft to track the rich and famous from above. "It would strike fear in the hearts of every celebrity having a birthday party," Splash chief executive Gary Morgan tells the Wall Street Journal. "Call it C3paparazzo."

Fortunately for Hollywood luminaries, FAA regulations currently prohibit private companies from flying drones domestically. But there is a loophole; the federal agency hasn't yet taken a hard stance on recreational drones, which can be purchased online, or built at home with materials available on the Web. The FAA "recommends" that these drones remain at an elevation below 400 feet, and that they stay away from airports and other commercial craft, but it has yet to implement more stringent regulations. This gray area could provide an easy way for lawyers to justify the use of amateur drones to track celebrities, or even cheating husbands.
Continue reading Flying Paparazzi Drones to Track Celebrities From Above

Flying Paparazzi Drones to Track Celebrities From Above originally appeared on Switched on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 09:50:00 EST. We can't imagine how this could've possibly happened, but a group of 7,000 people has just set a Guinness World Record for "Most People Tagged in an Online Photo." As Gizmodo explains, the record-setting photo was taken by the Orange mobile network at this year's Glastonbury Festival in England. Because the image of the festival crowd was cast in an astonishing 1300 megapixels, each of the 70,000 people captured in the shot are able to zoom in and individually tag themselves on Facebook.

As Geekosystem acutely observes, though, there's really no way to tell whether the people in the photo were accurately tagged -- which, we'd imagine, is crucial to the record's legitimacy. We demand a recount.
7,000 People Set Guinness Record for Most Tagged in Online Photo originally appeared on Switched on Sun, 24 Oct 2010 12:00:00 EST. We not only want our cars to get us to our destinations, but to get us there safely, too. According to DVICE, German researchers have developed an in-car, eye-tracking system that monitors facial features, and delivers an audible warning whenever the driver appears sleepy. Dubbed Eyetracker, the system uses two cameras to monitor the pupils' positions, and then watches for changes in a person's line of vision. Unlike in the image above, you don't need a laptop for Eyetracker to work, and it can be installed in any vehicle. The self-contained control unit is about the size of a matchbox, which means it could easily fit under a seat or in a console.

As with many cool and new technologies, there's no timetable for Eyetracker to hit the market. However, anybody who's driven long distances late at night could see the practicality of having such a system installed in the car. But, until it's available, having a loudmouth passenger jacked-up on caffeine will have to be enough of a deterrent against falling asleep behind the wheel.
Eyetracker Warns Sleepy Drivers Before They Crash originally appeared on Switched on Sat, 16 Oct 2010 11:00:00 EST. Professional athletes already employ motion-capture technology and 3-D imaging to identify weaknesses in their various swings, gaits and throwing motions. Now, another group of dedicated and intense professionals hopes to perfect the techniques of its members through a similar system of video analysis. According to CNET, the second-grade classroom at Cesar Chavez Elementary School in San Francisco now houses a Teachscape Reflect "360-degree multimedia classroom panorama and audio system."

Sparked by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Measures of Effective Teaching Project, the Reflect system is intended to help teachers comprehensively analyze their lesson plans, material delivery and how they communicate with students. A panoramic "vertical convex camera" captures 360-degree, 1080p images of the entire room, while another 720p camera stays focused on the front of the class. Two microphones -- one attached to the teacher and one stationed in the classroom -- record every sound.
Continue reading Teachscape 'Reflect' 360-Degree Video System Ensures No Student Goes Unnoticed

Teachscape 'Reflect' 360-Degree Video System Ensures No Student Goes Unnoticed originally appeared on Switched on Thu, 14 Oct 2010 07:20:00 EST. We already know that kites outfitted with cameras can provide a DIY alternative to satellite imagery, as was evidenced in Grassroots Mapping's overhead shots of the oil-strangled Gulf Coast. Now, Frank Taylor, the author of the Google Earth Blog (not officially affiliated with the Menlo Park-based Net behemoth), has provided his favorite aerial imagery producer with some hi-res shots of his own, taken with the help of a kite.

Taylor is on a five-year sailing trip called the Tahina Expedition, and is now supplying Google Earth and Maps with aerial photos of some of his ports. Newly published pictures of the Manihi Atoll in French Polynesia show the very high-resolution areas that Taylor shot as they are surrounded by the low-res zones taken with Google's satellite cams. An MIT graduate student has discovered a way to check a person's pulse with a plain-old, low-res webcam. According to MIT, Ming-Zher Poh has used open-source face-tracking software, and measured the variations in brightness resulting from blood vessels pumping blood in the face. Poh's method, which doesn't involve any sensors, produced pulse readings that were within three beats per minute of the readings performed by an FDA-approved pulse-monitoring device. The toughest part, for Poh, was accounting for changes in ambient lighting and the person's movements while the webcam did its job. Poh believes that he can eventually tweak the system to read respiration, blood-oxygen and blood-pressure levels.

If so, Poh could change the lives of folks who must monitor their vital signs every day, since his method is low-cost and easy to use. Using Poh's webcam-monitoring system, doctors could even remotely "visit with" patients who can't make it to the office for check-ups. Alternatively, they could check vitals when attaching other devices may not be ideal -- like while treating a severely burned person or newborn child.
Continue reading MIT Student Rigs Webcam to Check Pulse Rate

MIT Student Rigs Webcam to Check Pulse Rate originally appeared on Switched on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 09:00:00 EST. Luke Geissbühler and his children are hardly the first people to send a weather balloon up into space with an HD camera attached. But that doesn't stop us from watching in awe every time we see a DIY craft go up and send back shaky footage of Earth's blue atmosphere bleeding into the black void of space. The video was captured by a high-defintion camera stashed with an iPhone (for GPS tracking) into an insulated Styrofoam box. The balloon survived high winds and freezing temperatures on its way to 100,000 feet, before the lack of atmospheric pressure finally caused it to burst, sending the camera plummeting back towards Earth. A parachute and foam kept the camera from shattering on impact, and the GPS and a blinking LED led the family to the amateur space craft which landed in a tree only 50 miles north of the launch site in Newburgh, New York.
