Walter Isaacson's 'iSteve: The Book of Jobs' is slated for release in early 2012, marking the first time that the Apple CEO has participated in a biography. Isaacson, who has been working on the book since 2009, reportedly interviewed members of Jobs' family, his colleagues at Apple and, of course, the man himself.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/11/steve-jobs-bio-by-walter-isaacson-coming-in-2012/">Steve Jobs Approves New Bio to Be Published in 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 08:32:00 EST. Whether you're a recent convert, ambivalent veteran or one of those hardened Apple fanboys, let us remind you: a Mac, like any other computer, needs to be maintained. No, you probably don't need anti-virus software (yet), you may never have to fiddle with registry editing, and you'll likely never need to reinstall the operating system. But you may face a kernel panic, a raft of mysterious app crashes or the dreaded spinning beach ball of death. We've put together thirteen tips for keeping our Macs lean, clean computing machines. Spring has sprung, so, while you dust off your shelves and empty your closets, do some Mac maintenance, too.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/07/13-tips-to-speed-up-your-mac/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Baker's Dozen Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Mac</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/07/13-tips-to-speed-up-your-mac/">A Baker's Dozen Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Mac</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 13:00:00 EST. As any owner of an aging iOS device can tell you, the iconic Home button does not stand up well to long-term abuse. A leaked photo, purportedly of a fifth generation iPod Touch, suggests that Apple may finally be joining the rest of the gadget industry and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/05/ipod-touch-prototype-with-capacitive-home-button-leaked/" target="_blank">switching to capacitive touch buttons.</a> The blurry cam shot, if it's to be believed, also indicates that the iPod prototype packs 128GB of storage, double that of the current model.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/05/leaked-ipod-touch-photo-fifth-gen/">Is Apple Ditching the Physical Home Button on the iPod Touch?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 14:10:00 EST. <br />
According to the Wall Street Journal, federal authorities are looking into whether or not app manufacturers properly disclosed the kinds of personal information their apps collect from users, and whether or not they provided justification for doing so. Failure to notify and inform consumers about data gathering could constitute a violation of federal law, a source close to the investigation explained.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/05/feds-call-grand-jury-investigation-into-smartphone-ap/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Jersey Feds Call Grand Jury Investigation Into Smartphone Apps</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/05/feds-call-grand-jury-investigation-into-smartphone-ap/">New Jersey Feds Call Grand Jury Investigation Into Smartphone Apps</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 10:00:00 EST. Apple and Intel have both decided to <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-04-01/apple-intel-backed-ban-on-conflict-minerals-may-help-spur-exports-to-asia.html?cmpid=yhoo" target="_blank">stop using conflict minerals</a> to manufacture products, as part of the <a href="http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&amp;q=cache:4ChUQyVkvGAJ:www.eicc.info/documents/Conflict-FreeSmelterFAQ.pdf+Conflict-Free+Smelter+program&amp;hl=en&amp;gl=us&amp;pid=bl&amp;srcid=ADGEESj0Nog_eD1wnYUOK6bMuv9_w4K2sxVmp9DqThziNvRP5kuyYRRhaHGJSkMzXdsbpgmUiFUgTJPpA15s7Eom2FO0OluJnA2JUBJJdJwXxOQW0wfi_mqp9Fl565M_hSz8Jr4j62Oh&amp;sig=AHIEtbSBfI0p2eO0zxe8rjF32bqpSCjIrA" target="_blank">Conflict-Free Smelter program</a>.<br />
<br />
Conflict minerals include valuable commodities such as gold, titanium, tungsten and tin, which generate massive revenues used to fund wars in Central Africa, and, more specifically, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Beginning next year, all U.S. companies will be required by law to disclose their mineral supplies and identify any purchases that may be linked to the Congo conflict. By agreeing to the Conflict-Free Smelter program, though, Apple and Intel have effectively given themselves a head-start, which could help mitigate future controversy.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/04/apple-intel-vow-to-stop-using-conflict-minerals-from-africa/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple, Intel Vow to Stop Using Conflict Minerals From Africa</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/04/apple-intel-vow-to-stop-using-conflict-minerals-from-africa/">Apple, Intel Vow to Stop Using Conflict Minerals From Africa</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 12:40:00 EST. So far, though, neither of those predictions has come to pass. AT&amp;T has not suffered a mass exodus and, according to at least one analyst, <a href="http://www.bgr.com/2011/03/31/htc-thunderbolt-outselling-iphone-4-at-verizon-wireless-stores-analyst-claims/" target="_blank">the HTC Thunderbolt (Verizon's first LTE phone) is outselling the iPhone 4</a> in Verizon stores. The claim, however, is based primarily on anecdotal reporting from randomly selected Verizon retail locations, and doesn't take into account sales from Apple or third-party outlets like Best Buy. Still, the report from BTIG Research could indicate that the shift to 4G and the rising popularity of big-screen phones may in fact be working against the current crop of Apple handsets.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/03/thunderbolt-outselling-iphone-4-in-verizon-stores/">Thunderbolt Outselling iPhone 4 in Verizon Stores?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Sun, 03 Apr 2011 09:00:00 EST. Schmidt finished his Google tenure with an approval rating of 96-percent, according to an employee survey conducted by <a href="http://www.glassdoor.com/index.htm" target="_blank">Glassdoor.com</a>. That score was barely enough to edge out Jobs, who boasts a piddly 95-percent approval rating, down from 98-percent last year. The biggest loser? That would be Yahoo's Carol Bartz, whose rating plummeted by 27 points since last year.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/02/eric-schmidt-slightly-more-popular-than-steve-jobs-employee-s/">Eric Schmidt (Slightly) More Popular Than Steve Jobs, Employee Survey Says</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Sat, 02 Apr 2011 09:00:00 EST. Time Warner Cable has <a href="http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/31/time-warner-pulls-channels-from-ipad-app/" target="_blank">pulled a handful of TV channels</a> from its iPad app after receiving complaints from three media companies. The app, released earlier this month, allows users to choose from over 30 channels streamed directly to their iPads. Yesterday, however, Time Warner suddenly removed several of the channels (including MTV and FX), after Viacom, Discovery Communications and the News Corporation argued that the app violated their contracts with the cable company.<br />
<br />
The three media companies think Time Warner should pay them more for the rights to stream their channels to iPads and other portable devices. Prior to yesterday's announcement, both the News Corporation and Viacom had already sent cease and desist letters to the cable provider.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/01/time-warner-pulls-channels-from-ipad-app/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Time Warner Removes TV Channels From iPad App, Appeases Media Companies</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/01/time-warner-pulls-channels-from-ipad-app/">Time Warner Removes TV Channels From iPad App, Appeases Media Companies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 10:10:00 EST. These days, would-be <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/thief/">thieves</a> steal gadgets at their own risk. While yesteryear's TVs and stereos resulted in big money, today's laptops and smartphones -- what with their GPS tracking and Web connectivity -- typically result in quick arrests. And, thanks to a new program called <a href="http://www.orbicule.com/witness/" target="_blank">Witness</a> (which <a href="http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/03/witness-mac-security-camera/" target="_blank">turns your Mac into an Internet-connected security camera</a>), you can watch somebody stealing the computer you'll inevitably get back the first time he logs onto Facebook.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/04/01/witness-security-program-mac-laptop/">'Witness' Security Program Lets You Watch as Thieves Steal Your Mac</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 08:30:00 EST. The iPad has not yet become another <a href="http://www.switched.com/2009/08/28/yet-another-european-iphone-explosion/">Apple</a>-<a href="http://www.switched.com/2009/02/27/macbooks-battery-goes-boom-in-london-office/">built</a> <a href="http://www.switched.com/2008/03/10/ipod-nano-catches-fire-while-owner-snoozes">IED</a>. But, according to one El Paso, Texas man, the tablet has a serious overheating problem. Former firefighter Hector Camacho (not the boxer) claims he was <a href="http://www.theawl.com/2011/03/will-your-new-ipad-set-you-on-fire" target="_blank">severely burned by his iPad 2</a> while trying to unplug it from its charger. After all, you know what they say: diamonds may be forever, but fresh-off-the-assembly-line iPads are a girl's best friend. They <em>do</em> say that, don't they?<br />
<a href="http://www.9to5mac.com/57985/yes-now-give-me-my-ipad/" target="_blank"><br />
This latest techy proposal</a> may not be as rollicking as that<span style="text-decoration: underline;"> </span><a href="http://www.switched.com/2009/02/14/another-geek-uses-an-iphone-to-propose/" target="_blank">iPhone one</a>, or as supremely nerdy as the <a href="http://www.switched.com/2009/11/16/dressed-as-pokemon-man-proposes-in-public-to-his-pikachu/">Pokemon question</a>, but it's certainly not a bad addition to the geek engagement canon.<br />
<br />
Of course, the technological obsolescence factor basically ensures the couple will get blank stares if they ever share the story with future kids. Still, it's cute.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/29/engraved-ipad-2-marriage-proposal/">Sorry, Fellows: The iPad 2 Marriage Proposal Has Been Done</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 14:50:00 EST. Got to hand it to those British Royals. In their own way, they're pretty cutting edge. In 1960, for instance, they were <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/may/6/newsid_3993000/3993317.stm" target="_blank">the first</a> to televise a royal wedding service. (Blame them for the countless horrific wedding-related reality shows.) The royals are again acting oh-so-cutting-edge (not to mention classy) by planning a digital release of Kate and William's entire ceremony, mere hours after its conclusion. It will be sold through iTunes, among other retailers. The following week, they'll also be offering an audio recording on CD, vinyl or tape (um, yes please). In the meantime, we'll have to get our royal fix with <a href="http://thehairpin.com/2011/03/whats-wrong-with-this-celebratory-mug/" target="_blank">souvenirs</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/23/kate-william-royal-wedding-gets-itunes-release/">Royal Wedding to Be Released, Classily, Through iTunes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Wed, 23 Mar 2011 14:20:00 EST. In a letter, four Senators -- Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Charles Schumer (D-NY), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Tom Udall (D-NM) -- argued that apps that help drivers avoid speed traps, sobriety checkpoints and police radar pose serious risks to other motorists. "Giving drunk drivers a free tool to evade checkpoints, putting innocent families and children at risk, is a matter of public concern," the Senators wrote in a letter to Apple, Google and BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion. "We hope that you will give our request to remove these applications from your store immediate consideration."<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/23/democratic-senators-ask-apple-to-remove-dui-checkpoint-apps/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Democratic Senators Ask Apple to Remove DUI Checkpoint Apps</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/23/democratic-senators-ask-apple-to-remove-dui-checkpoint-apps/">Democratic Senators Ask Apple to Remove DUI Checkpoint Apps</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Wed, 23 Mar 2011 13:20:00 EST. <img alt="exodus not found in itunes" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.switched.com/media/2011/03/exodussearch.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></div>
Well, <a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/21/case-for-exodus-international-iphone-app/" target="_blank">I was right</a>. Change.org's petition to Apple to remove Exodus International's so-called "gay cure" app has reached 150,000 signatures, and <a href="http://www.nbcbayarea.com/blogs/press-here/UPDATE-Apple-Removes-Gay-Cure-App-118498054.html" target="_blank">now the app's no longer available</a>. Apple hasn't yet released a statement on the matter.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.cultofmac.com/breaking-apple-pulls-christian-gay-cure-app/87751" target="_blank">As Cult of Mac points out</a>: "The real issue [is that] Apple has no coherent policy about what kind of content gets approved and remains in iTunes." Indeed.<br />
<br />
Gay Gamer <a href="http://gaygamer.net/2011/03/antiexgay_iphone_app_petition.html" target="_blank">took issue with my defense</a> of the wingnut organization's app, but I think commenter SecretMoblin aptly clarifies <a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/21/case-for-exodus-international-iphone-app/" target="_blank">one of the points I tried to make previously</a>. "The folks behind Exodus are perfectly aware of the controversy this app would bring... Exodus <i>wants</i> pressure from gay and lesbian organizations to pull the app so it can prove its point about those mean intolerant gays shutting down anybody who gets in their way." Looks like they got their wish.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/23/exodus-international-ex-gay-app-booted-app-store/">Hooray for Mob Rule: Apple Boots 'Ex-Gay' App After 150K People Demand Tolerance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Wed, 23 Mar 2011 12:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.amazon.com/appstore" target="_blank">Amazon Appstore</a> will provide a new way for Android users to purchase apps for their mobile and tablet devices, while offering a few features unique to Amazon. Because the online retailer already enjoys a strong consumer base, Amazon will be able to integrate its own marketing and recommendation tools within its Appstore, potentially providing users with more accurate and personalized suggestions.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/22/amazon-appstore-launches-apple-sues/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Amazon Launches Appstore for Android, Apple Files Lawsuit</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/22/amazon-appstore-launches-apple-sues/">Amazon Launches Appstore for Android, Apple Files Lawsuit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 10:04:00 EST. The leading organization behind the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ex-gay" target="_blank">ex-gay movement</a> (the belief that religious counseling can help LGBT people "struggling" with their sexualities to reorient themselves to heterosexuality) recently had <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/exodus-international/id418794954?mt=8#" target="_blank">its official app</a> approved by Apple, and gay rights groups are now in an uproar. Surprise?<br />
<br />
Despite the fact that Apple deemed the app to contain "no objectionable content," gay rights advocates are fuming. They say that Exodus and its ex-gay crusade are rooted in messages of shame and bigotry, and that its agenda-serving app only serves to spread hate.<br />
<br />
The ex-gay movement itself has been characterized by its opponents as everything from a laughable curiosity ("Pray away the gay!") to <a href="http://www.truthwinsout.org/blog/2010/11/12942/" target="_blank">a cultish brainwashing operation</a>. I'm not going to define it one way or another, because I haven't been targeted by any of its members myself. But I will say that, despite being an openly gay man, I think this app deserves a chance. That's right: I'm <em>defending</em> Exodus International.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/21/case-for-exodus-international-iphone-app/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Censorship Goes Both Ways: The Case for an Ex-Gay App</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/21/case-for-exodus-international-iphone-app/">Censorship Goes Both Ways: The Case for an Ex-Gay App</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 17:10:00 EST. Sorry, <a href="http://www.switched.com/category/@apple">Apple</a> fanatics -- it's just a prototype. But if Andrew Kim is as clever as this all-in-one iPad/iPhone/iPod stand suggests, you should be able to get your iLoving hands on it soon enough. The plastic on plywood <a href="http://www.minimallyminimal.com/minimally-minimal/?currentPage=3" target="_blank">PolyPly</a> lets you snap your devices into place, and even leaves room to connect their cords. It's beautiful in its simplicity and matches Apple's minimal designs without just ripping them off.<br />

This year, the corporation earned a spot on Ethisphere's list of the '<a href="http://ethisphere.com/2011-worlds-most-ethical-companies/" target="_blank">World's Most Ethical Companies</a>,' beating out Apple, Facebook, and Google. It's certainly a far cry from the late '90s, when Microsoft faced antitrust trials and accusations of corporate tyranny. But the company's "<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/About/CorporateCitizenship/en-us/" target="_blank">corporate citizenship</a>" campaign may have done a lot to change its image.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/18/report-microsoft-more-ethical-than-google-facebook-or-apple/">Report: Microsoft More Ethical Than Google, Facebook or Apple</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Fri, 18 Mar 2011 09:20:00 EST. After over a year of planning, the <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/newyorktimes">New York Times</a> has finally <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/subscriptions/Multiproduct/lp0145.html#" target="_blank">unveiled its new paywall system</a>, and one of the major beneficiaries may wind up being <a href="http://www.switched.com/category/@apple">Apple</a>. In addition to selling website subscriptions directly to readers, the Times will offer plans through the Apple App Store. That means that, in compliance with Apple's new subscription policy, the paper will hand over 30-percent of the revenue to the House of Jobs.<br />
<br />
You can check out our breakdown of the paywall options <a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/17/new-york-times-to-introduce-digital-paywall-on-march-28th/" target="_blank">here</a>. The best deal, however remains the print subscription. New Yorkers can get the print edition, which includes unfettered digital access, for around $25 <strike>a month</strike> for four weeks. The price is higher for non-New York residents, but often still comes in under $35. Though the New York Times wants to offer the convenience of a digital subscription, it's clear that its most cherished customers will continue to be print subscribers.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/17/apple-gets-in-on-new-york-times-subscription/">New York Times Digital Subscription Plans Cuts Apple In on the Action</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Thu, 17 Mar 2011 15:40:00 EST. The ease of sharing digital files? DRM limitations? If you thought it was any of those, you are clearly a mere mortal. Superstar Jon Bon Jovi has been mulling this over, and finally came to the conclusion that Steve Jobs is "personally responsible for killing the music business." Bon Jovi's <a href="http://www.timesplus.co.uk/sto/?login=false&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thesundaytimes.co.uk%2Fsto%2FMagazine%2FRegulars%2Farticle569091.ece">bizarre comment is from an interview</a> with Britain's Sunday Times, in which he cries over the loss of vinyl or something. Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, tweeted yesterday that <a href="http://twitter.com/pschiller/status/46992610639888384" target="_blank">the white iPhone 4 will finally be available this spring</a>. Schiller didn't reveal any specific details about the mythical phone, like whether it'll be available on both Verizon and AT&amp;T, or its exact release date. But with summer a likely target launch date for the iPhone 5, we'd bet on seeing the white iPhone 4 sometime around Easter.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/14/phil-schiller-white-iphone4-coming-spring/">Apple's Phil Schiller: White iPhone 4 Will Drop This Spring</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Mon, 14 Mar 2011 14:10:00 EST. Big news, you guys: Apple sold <em>a lot</em> of iPad 2s over the weekend. How many? <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1366051/Apple-sells-million-iPad-2-tablet-computers.html?ITO=1490" target="_blank">Nearly a million</a>. Granted, another big opening weekend may seem about as newsworthy as a sunrise, but take a second to chew on this: most analysts expected Apple to move only about 350,000 to 400,000 tablets. Instead, the company ended up selling about three times as many as it did last April, when it unveiled the first iPad. In related news, some of us <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1366051/Apple-sells-million-iPad-2-tablet-computers.html?ITO=1490" target="_blank">still aren't convinced</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/14/apple-sells-1-million-ipads-during-debut-weekend-completing-1-m/">Apple Sells 1 Million iPads During Debut Weekend, Completing 1 Million Lives</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Mon, 14 Mar 2011 12:30:00 EST. Though some devices adjusted to the time difference with seamless elegance, plenty of other users reported glitches with their iPhone clocks. Some simply failed to advance, while others actually fell backward by an hour, putting their owners a full two hours behind the rest of the U.S.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/14/fix-iphone-daylight-savings-glitch/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The iPhone Still Can't Handle Daylight Savings Time</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/14/fix-iphone-daylight-savings-glitch/">The iPhone Still Can't Handle Daylight Savings Time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Mon, 14 Mar 2011 10:01:00 EST. <img alt="Hazem Sayed" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.switched.com/media/2011/03/sayedskipsline.jpg" style="border-style: solid; border-width: 0px; margin: 4px;" /></div>
We know the Mac faithful can be a little fanatical. But even we were a little shocked by Hazem Sayed, a 53-year-old developer who <a href="http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2011/03/11/who-pays-900-to-be-no-1-in-line/?utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter" target="_blank">paid his way to the front of the line</a> at the Apple store on 5th Avenue here in NYC. Sayed strolled up to the front of the line and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/this-guy-paid-900-to-be-first-in-line-for-an-ipad-2-2011-3" target="_blank">paid a 20-year-old college student $900</a> (more than the cost of a top-of-the-line iPad) to give him his spot. That means, depending on which model Sayed springs for, he could be shelling out $1,729 for the luxury of scoring an iPad 2 on day one.<br />
<br />
The buy wasn't just about scoring an <a href="http://www.switched.com/category/@ipad">iPad</a> 2, though. Sayed meant to draw media attention, which (obviously) it did. Intrigued by the man who was willing to pay so much money just to get to the front of the line, reporters began lining up to talk to Sayed, who wasted no time plugging his company, Zami, and its latest app, 'AskLocal.' All things considered, the trick turned out to be a pretty cheap way to draw attention to his business. Getting in front of roughly 150 people waiting on line at the time (it's since swelled to almost 400) was just an added bonus.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/11/hazem-sayed-jumps-ipad-2-line-900/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dev Scores Cheap Publicity by Shelling Out $900 to Skip iPad 2 Line</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/11/hazem-sayed-jumps-ipad-2-line-900/">Dev Scores Cheap Publicity by Shelling Out $900 to Skip iPad 2 Line</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST. Today the <a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/02/apple-ipad-2-unveiled/">iPad 2</a> goes on sale and, as with most iDevices, there will be a gaggle of geeks lined up outside your local Apple store to snatch it up. It's only a small evolutionary update to the original iPad, but there's no denying its intrigue. Yet even after reading all of the <a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/10/ipad-2-reviews-are-in-long-live-the-king/">glowing reviews</a>, I'm still not sold. There's no doubt that the iPad 2 is going to sell like hotcakes, but I won't be among those turning my money over Mr. Jobs and company. I'm not here to bash the <a href="http://www.switched.com/category/@ipad">iPad</a> or <a href="http://www.switched.com/category/@apple">Apple</a>, I'm just here to offer a few reasons you might want to think twice about emptying your wallet for Apple's latest craze.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/11/ipad-2-think-twice-about-buying/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Why You Should Think Twice About Buying an iPad 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/11/ipad-2-think-twice-about-buying/">Why You Should Think Twice About Buying an iPad 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Fri, 11 Mar 2011 15:45:00 EST. In what must be one of the most gratuitous moves ever made, Apple will open a 5,000-square-foot store smack-dab in downtown Austin, built to last only <a href="http://www.9to5mac.com/55164/apple-sets-up-5000-square-foot-temporary-store-at-sxsw-to-sell-new-ipads-test-potential-traffic/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+9To5Mac-MacAllDay+%289+to+5+Mac+-+Apple+Intelligence%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader">slightly longer</a> than the duration of the South by Southwest Interactive Conference. What could Apple possibly sell to the SXSW crowd that they don't already own? Why, official Steve Jobs tattoos, of course. Well, that or iPad 2s. But we bet Apple would rake it in if it ran with the former.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/10/apple-pop-up-megastore-at-sxsw/">Apple to Open (Gratuitous) Pop-Up Megastore at SXSW</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Thu, 10 Mar 2011 14:15:00 EST. The first batch of iPad 2 reviews have landed. Predictably, most reviewers can't speak more highly of the latest Apple tablet. Then again, as Laptop Magazine's Mark Spoonauer points out, "<a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41997343/ns/technology_and_science-tech_and_gadgets/" target="_blank">Apple didn't need to do a lot to stay in the tablet lead</a>." This isn't Apple playing catch-up or exploding into a new market; this the Cupertino crew simply treading water. And, if the reviews are to be believed, that's more than enough.<br />
<br />
Even though Engadget's Josh Topolsky says that "the iPad 2 just seriously<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/09/ipad-2-review" target="_blank"> raised the bar on sleek, sexy computer hardware</a>," it's hard to ignore just how similar it looks to the original. It's "<a href="http://www.macworld.com/article/158439/2011/03/ipad2.html#lsrc=twt_macworld" target="_blank">Jobs' Law</a>" (as Jason Snell at MaxWorld dubs it) that "the latest version of any Apple product is likely to be thinner and lighter than its predecessor." But, as he point out, "for products this small, every ounce and fraction of an inch counts." Walt Mossberg says the iPad 2 makes both the original model and the Xoom "look bloated." All of this adds up to a device that's much easier to carry and handle.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/10/ipad-2-reviews-are-in-long-live-the-king/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iPad 2 Reviews Are In: Long Live the King</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/10/ipad-2-reviews-are-in-long-live-the-king/">iPad 2 Reviews Are In: Long Live the King</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Thu, 10 Mar 2011 10:00:00 EST. The biggest news is that the App Store will now recognize if you've previously purchased an app, and now iPhone 4s have access to the Personal Hotspot feature. Along with a bunch of bug fixes, Safari has also gotten a nice speed boost and you can finally reclaim the orientation lock button on the iPad. InPrivate, Incognito, Private Browsing -- whatever they want to brand it -- all modern browsers offer a special mode designed to keep what you do online a secret from prying eyes. Despite different names and origins at different companies, they all work in basically similar ways: A new browser session is created that operates separately from your existing one, with its own history and cookies that are erased when the window is closed. And though it can keep a snoop from seeing what sites you've visited by going through your history, it doesn't make you anonymous on the Web. Advertisers and law enforcement will still be able to track you.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/08/how-to-browse-privately-chrome-safari-firefox-ie/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Your Guide to Private Browsing</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/08/how-to-browse-privately-chrome-safari-firefox-ie/">Your Guide to Private Browsing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 14:50:00 EST. John McCain made a bit of a boo boo the other day on ABC's 'This Week.' Remarking on recent comments made by President <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/barackobama">Obama</a> that America needs to increase its exports, <a href="http://www.nbcbayarea.com/blogs/press-here/McCain-Preps-for-Bay-Area-Knows-iPads-Arent-Built-Here-117541629.html" target="_blank">McCain cited Apple as a good example American manufacturing</a>. "[If] you emptied that house there... if you left a computer there, or an iPad, or an iPhone, those are built in the United States of America," he told host Christiane Amanpour. McCain took some criticism for his comment, since <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> product are actually built in China, at <a href="http://www.switched.com/2010/05/20/bleak-foxconn-factory-conditions-exposed-by-undercover-intern/" target="_blank">Foxconn's notorious Shenzhen plant</a>.<br />
<br />
McCain is now gearing up for a fundraising trip to Silicon Valley at the end of the month. We suggest the senator brush up on his tech company knowledge before heading off to sunny California. He may be forgiven for "misspeaking" (as McCain claims he did) this time, but the press will likely be less generous if he makes the same blunder in Apple's own backyard. Check out the interview after the break.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/08/john-mccain-tells-this-week-ipads-built-in-america/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sorry, John McCain -- iPads Aren't Built in the Good Ol' USA</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/08/john-mccain-tells-this-week-ipads-built-in-america/">Sorry, John McCain -- iPads Aren't Built in the Good Ol' USA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 12:40:00 EST. Poor Samsung, the maker of the Android-based <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/galaxytab">Galaxy Tab</a>, has decided to reconsider its tablet's pricing, and, according to Executive VP Lee Don-Joo, "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/04/samsung-finds-parts-of-galaxy-tab-10-1-inadequate-compared-to/" target="_blank">improve the parts that are inadequate</a>." There's really no reason why college basketball fans should miss any of this year's NCAA basketball tournament, which kicks off on March 15th. Aside from watching live games on TV or streaming for free on the Web, live tournament games <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110302/march-madness-comes-to-the-ipad-for-free/?mod=ATD_rss" target="_blank">will be available for free on the iPad and iPhone</a> for the first time. In the past, you needed <a href="http://www.switched.com/2009/03/12/watch-ncaa-basketball-live-on-your-iphone-with-new-app/">a paid app to stream live games</a> on the iPhone. CBS, which is now sharing broadcast rights with Turner Broadcasting, decided to give the people what they want -- <a href="http://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/2010-12-19/ncaa-march-madness-demand">free March Madness action on their portable devices</a>. But this isn't just TV networks being generous. As GigaOM reports, fans <a href="http://gigaom.com/video/11-7m-hours-of-march-madness-streamed-online/" target="_blank">watched more than 11.7 million hours of online tournament basketball</a> last year, which is exactly what happens when many of the games are played while most Americans are (supposed to be) working. By bringing iPad and iPhone owners into the fold, CBS and Turner should increase last year's viewing numbers without taking away viewers from other mediums. Grab the app on March 13th.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/03/march-madness-on-demand-free-to-ipad-iphone/">March Madness On Demand to Bring Free Live Games to iPad, iPhone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Thu, 03 Mar 2011 07:30:00 EST. Apple kicked off the tablet era with last year's launch of the iPad, and countless manufacturers have been scrambling to catch up. It's no surprise that Apple wants to make sure its presence is felt as the Tablet Wars continue on through 2011. The iPad 2 is hardly revolutionary, but it's a worthy upgrade to an already attractive package. And say what you will about Apple and iOS, but it's still the most user-friendly tablet OS around.<br />
<br />
First, Apple made sure to beef up the hardware inside. In terms of raw power, the 256 MB of RAM and single-core processor found in the original simply can't compete with the Android tablets hitting the market. Apple saw fit to cram its own dual-core processor inside (dubbed the A5), and promises up to nine times the graphics performance, thanks to a new 3-D chip. Apple managed to add power without sacrificing battery life, all while trimming down the already svelte package. The bezel around the screen is now slightly smaller, and the device is significantly thinner and lighter; it's .5 milimeters thinner than the iPhone 4, and weighs only 1.3 pounds. The iPad 2's audio is improved with two larger stereo speakers, and HDMI video-out will let you hook the device up to your TV (provided you cough up the $39 for the special dongle). As expected, Apple also slapped a pair of cameras on the device. A rear-facing one capable of capturing 720p video and a front-facing VGA cam for use with FaceTime. Apple also added a gyroscope, just like the one found in the iPhone 4.<p><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/02/apple-ipad-2-unveiled/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Apple iPad 2 Unveiled</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/02/apple-ipad-2-unveiled/">Apple iPad 2 Unveiled</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 13:28:00 EST. Apparently, it's because of former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. An ex-member of Parliament recently revealed that <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/steve-jobs/8354215/Gordon-Brown-blocked-knighthood-for-Steve-Jobs.html" target="_blank">Brown refused to knight Jobs in 2009</a> because the Apple CEO declined an invitation to speak at a major political conference. The former MP has also claimed that he nominated Jobs for an honorary knighthood, and that the approval process reached the final stages before being struck down by the then-Prime Minister. Brown's spokeswoman, however, said the story is just rubbish. "Mr. Brown did not block a knighthood for Steve Jobs," she insisted.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/03/01/gordon-brown-blocked-steve-jobs-knighthood/">Steve Jobs Honorary Knighthood Blocked by Former U.K. Prime Minister</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Tue, 01 Mar 2011 12:55:00 EST. Researchers at Harvard University and MIT have developed a handheld scanner that <a href="http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-02-smartphone-app-cancer-diagnosis.html" target="_blank">can detect potential cancer cells and diagnose them with an iPhone app</a> -- all in about an hour. According to Physorg, the scanner uses antibodies and magnetic particles to identify suspicious lumps. But rather than biopsy the entire mass, the scanner, which costs just $200 to create, extracts cells from all over the mass using a small needle. The device can then be connected to an iPhone, and an app will diagnose the sampled cells in an hour or less. In Dr. Ralph Weissleder's trial of 50 patients, the scanner provided an accurate diagnosis 96-percent of the time. A typical diagnosis, which involves a painful biopsy and a few days of waiting for lab results, is only accurate 84-percent of the time.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/28/cancer-scanner-costs-200-diagnoses-via-iphone/">$200 Scanner Detects Cancer Cells, Diagnoses With iPhone App</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 16:38:00 EST. Rumors of a MacBook Pro update from Apple have been floating around for the past few weeks, so it was no surprise to see this morning's <a href="http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/">launch of a fully refreshed line</a> (including 13-inch, 15-inch and 17-inch versions). The Pros are packing the cutting-edge Intel Sandy Bridge Core i5 and i7 processors, AMD Radeon graphics cards and the brand new Thunderbolt I/O tech. Like a supercharged USB or Firewire, Thunderbolt I/O clocks in at 20 times faster than USB 2.0. With support for both peripherals and displays, Thunderbolt lets you hook into hard drives, audio devices and even your home theater (via HDMI connectors). And, for chronic video chatters, FaceTime is now available in an HD version. The 13-inch models start at $1,499, 15-inch at $1,799 and 17-inch at $2,499.<br />

And the Academy Award goes to... Apple. Hollywood, that beacon of liberal elitism, seems to also embrace tech snobbery, so it's no surprise that Apple showed up in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/23/shocker-apple-product-placements-dominate-hollywood/" target="_blank">30-percent of the 33 movies that hit number one at the box office in 2010</a>. Impressive, unless you consider that this number has fallen from 2008, when Apple was in 50-percent of number one hits. (Perhaps its cachet was greater pre-iPad?) According to <a href="http://www.brandchannel.com/home/post/2011/02/22/2010-Brandcameo-Product-Placement-Awards.aspx" target="_blank">Interbrand's Brandchannel</a>, though, the average number of identifiable products in hit films has been on a downward slope since 2005, with only 17.9 products per film in 2010. The policy requires that companies offering subscriptions through the app store offer the same service, at the same price they do elsewhere -- but Apple skims 30-percent off the top for itself. Of course, this could force some developers to choose between keeping prices low to compete with Apple for market share but at a reduction of profit (or even a complete loss of it) or jacking up prices to compensate, which may drive consumers into the arms of Apple outlets like iBooks. To make matters worse, Apple developer guidelines no longer allow for apps to contain links to external sites where goods or content are sold (an obvious but cumbersome loophole that a company like Amazon could have exploited).<br />
<br />
Now, the FTC and the Justice Department are taking preliminary steps in an <a target="_blank" href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704657704576150350669475800.html">investigation of the new program</a>, with the potential for a formal antitrust investigation and lawsuit if the subscription plans are deemed to violate <a href="http://www.switched.com/tag/antitrust">antitrust</a> laws. The fear is that Apple's policy of funneling all content providers' subscriptions and purchases through the iTunes store -- and banning external sites -- would limit competition. Of course, nothing could come of this informal look at the plan. But if you ask us (though, admittedly we're not lawyers and this writer has been accused on more than one occasion of having an anti-Apple bias) it sounds to us like the government might have a case here.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.switched.com"><img src="http://www.switched.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Switched" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.switched.com/2011/02/18/ftc-doj-eyeing-apples-subscription-policy-for-antitrust-violat/">FTC, DOJ Eyeing Apple's Subscription Policy for Antitrust Violations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.switched.com">Switched</a> on Fri, 18 Feb 2011 14:50:00 EST.
