Oprah Inspired Lisa to Lose 160 Pounds (That's Fit)
Oct 25th 2010 12:05AM Lisa,
First let me say that I admire your courage in telling your story. Not many people are able to share the ups and downs of their lives with complete stangers, so I commend you for that.
I am going on 43 years old, am the mother of three sons, ages 22, 24, and 25, the grandmother of soon to be eight, although four of them have gone on to a better place.
I have never had a weight problem. I am 5'3" tall and walked out of the hospital after my last son, weighing exactly 95lbs...which is how much I weighed before I got pregnant.
My entire adult life, I have eaten one "big meal" a day. By big, I mean maybe 2 tacos or a couple of pieces of fried chicken with either mashed potatoes or macaroni and cheese. If I get hunger pangs later, I will eat things such as raisins, dried pineapples, or granola bars. I drink water and coffee and the rare Sprite or Sierra Mist.
After losing my mother and youngest brother six days apart back in 2003, I guess I just gave up caring about myself. I still ate the same one meal a day, but noticed I was putting on weight. I went from 106 lbs to 154 lbs, the biggest I had ever been in my life!
I then moved to the state where I grew up, gave up drinking a 2 liter of Coke a day, switching to bottled water instead, and I managed to lose down to 137 lbs. My weight would fluctuate from 137 to 145, but never more.
I ate out every single day. I was used to cooking for 10 people and found I couldn't cook for just one, so it was easier and cheaper for me to eat out. I still lost the weight.
Before going further, I am also 100 percent disabled and am unable to exercise in any way, shape, or form, so this is out of the question for me. I cannot walk, sit, stand, or lay in any one position for long or I end up in excruciating pain and in bed for days after.
Earlier this year, I met a wonderful man who takes care of me the best he can. The only change is that he cooks, so we eat at home more often than we eat out. Even still, I eat one "big meal" a day.
When we met, I weighed 137 lbs and wore a size 8. Now, nine months later, I tip the scales at 169 lbs!!
It is located in my breasts and, of course, my belly...to the point where people are asking me when I am due. I had a hysterectomy in 2006.
My doctor ordered bloodwork, which came back fine, then instructed me to go on a "strict diet". I asked the nurse if I should cut out my one meal or my granola bars?? Additionally, he put me on Lasix, which has everyone except me, running to the bathroom constantly!
Regardless, the extra weight is causing problems with my back (where I have severe degeneration and herniated discs) and also my knees - where I never had problems before.
What would you or anyone else suggest I do in this situation? I get so tired of hearing about the so-called "middle-age spread"!
HELP!!!!
8 Common Beauty Ruts & Ways To Rebound (Shopping Articles Blog)
Oct 21st 2010 3:30AM As a person who used to cut her hair in the fall and let it grow in the spring, I have actually finally chosen to let my hair grow long...since 2006, and I often wear it in either a ponytail or a half ponytail - where I take a portion of my long bangs and pull them back into a ponytail and out of my face, while leaving the rest of it to hang underneath.
I rarely wear make-up, but when I do, it is usually earthtones and I did recenly purchase the lipstain mentioned in the article. I do like it, but the balm doesn't last very long.
Additionally, I have been wearing the same cologne for over 20 years and I have yet to receive a complaint about it. Quite the opposite, in fact. Nearly everytime I come into close contact with someone, they always comment on how good I smell. The secret to wearing a sngle cologne for a long period of time is that it tends to dull your own senses and some women keep spraying until THEY can smell it again. That is a HUGE no-no. Just because you can no longer smell it, doesn't mean everyone else can't, either. A couple of sprays should be plenty, but I also mix mine with a few sprays of body spray in a similar scent that isn't too overwhelming. My fragrance of choice is vanilla, so it is subtle. Dark Vanilla mixed with Warm Vanilla Sugar body spray is all I wear and people love it!
When it comes to coloring my hair, I usually only do so once or twice a year and almost always the same shade of blonde or a little darker shade in the winter months. Dying your hair should go unnoticed by others, just as your make-up should. Make it look as natural as possible. I do not use foundation.
Nail polish is something you can change on a daily basis. Personally, I like to choose colors which match the clothing I am wearing that day, or none at all.
And I agree 100% about moisturizing your body, but I say do it all year round. As I said, I prefer vanilla, so I buy Warm Vanilla Sugar from Bath and Body Works. It is very rich and creamy and a little goes a long way, but it leaves your skin feeling wonderfully soft with a gentle scent. They do carry other scents and fragrances, but this is the one I prefer. Short of that, I would suggest Avon's Moisture Therapy. Neither leave that greasy feeling we've all come to hate so much.
And I am no teenager. I am a 43 year old grandmother of seven.
Average UK Woman Owns 12 Items of Clothing That Don't Fit, Study Says (Stylelist (Main))
Oct 9th 2010 6:00AM I am a clothes hoarder who will soon be 43 years old and I still have clothes from my high school days!!
I frequently joke that I have enough clothes to give to every village in Africa and still have some left over for myself.
Obviously, 25 years and three children later, I know I'll probably never be able to wear the majority of them again, but I still hold onto them because they ALWAYS come back in style and you never know when I may lose a few extra pounds.
I even have clothes with the tags still attached! And we don't even want to start talking about shoes because I have a pair to match any color outfit I choose to wear.
Finally, I collect t-shirts with funny sayings on them and from friends who visit places around the world. I come by my clothes hoarding honestly, though. When my mother passed away in 2003, I gave 31 of the 30 gallon trash bags full of clothes to a local church to give to the needy!!
Trapped! (MyDaily)
Oct 7th 2010 7:32PM The important thing is that she got out without suffering any injuries. How and where she got the telephone number for the tv station is irrelevant. The real question one should be asking is why did it take the police so long to arrive and help her?
How would you feel in her shoes??
Bottom line is that she was very fortunate not to have been bitten by either of the dogs
Facebook Even More Reviled Than the IRS, Study Says (Switched)
Jul 21st 2010 9:29AM I joined FB almost a year ago and immediately left a site where I was a long-term member. At first, it was just because it was something new, but then more and more of my family and friends joined and there's no way I would leave now.
I also play some of the games and enjoy them tremendously.
As far as MySpace....please. I encourage everyone to stay off of it if at all possible. It is full of viruses and seriously slows down your computer!
Redbox Heads Online, Challenges Netflix to a Brawl (Cinematical)
Jul 21st 2010 9:20AM Exactly! And the option to keep it for as many days as you like while still being charged only a dollar plus tax.
I've been a NetFlix customer and have also used the Redbox. Then I got to thinking...I have digital cable with every channel available out there, including all the movie channels, so why am I spending extra money when I have more than I can ever see already??
For those on a limited budget who don't watch frequently, I would suggest Redbox. If you watch more than maybe 4-5 movies per month, it may fit your budget better to go with NetFlix.
Elisabeth Hasselbeck Says She Can Relate to Being Black (VIDEO) (Inside TV Blog)
Nov 21st 2009 8:42AM Marion....the definition of a "nigger" is an ignorant person.
Look in the mirror!
Elisabeth Hasselbeck Says She Can Relate to Being Black (VIDEO) (Inside TV Blog)
Nov 21st 2009 8:39AM Well, I can't respond to the comment below, so I'm doing it here.
I'm not going to pussyfoot around anything. I am a white woman and have worked in the inner city of Baltimore, MD, which is predominately black. I've grown up with black neighbors and friends and I'm not going to respond to the original comment other than to say that she got a taste of racism and anyone who says it doesn't still exist is either blind or a fool or just plain racist themselves!
If you're so tired of hearing about it, then be part of the solution instead of adding to the problem by being a damn bigot towards people you don't even know and attacking people such as rnmetz, for giving their opinion. Who the hell are YOU to tell anyone to go sit in a corner and then throw out a RACIAL slur against the President of our country?? You make yourself look like an ass because you contradict yourself in your own statement of "being tired of hearing it" when you're one of the ones who are speaking!
The next time you turn on a light, thank the black man who invented the carbon filiment that makes it work...Lewis Latimore. The next time you eat a peanut butter sandwich, thank George Washington Carver who invented peanut butter AND 400 other plant products (as well as the pencils we all have used at some point in our lives), the next time you see a traffic signal, thank Garrett Morgan - who invented it. If your heart ever needs a boost to get it going, thank Otis Boykin - who invented the pacemaker. And these are only a few of the many black inventors in history, some who were slaves, some who had no education or very little, and one in particular, who has earned numerous rewards for finding a new surgery to help blind people see! I'm sure the color of her skin didn't matter to them, so why the hell should it matter to anyone about anything?
You want to talk about crime or a part thereof? How's this sit on your stomach.....of the 3219 people on death row (one of the Baltimore - Washington D.C. snipers was executed last week), the majority are WHITE!
Please, someone show some intelligence, respect, and knowledge rather than the ignorance of posts such as that one because I'm sick of hearing people complain about those who complain about racism, when they show themselves to be one of them!
Tim McGraw Upset By His Own CD Release (The Boot)
Oct 21st 2008 12:50AM If Tim McGraw's music "stinks", you must be tone deaf!
I can understand his being upset and I can't wait until his new songs are released.
But heck, if he's got enough GREATEST HITS for THREE releases, then thank God there are people out there who can appreciate a fantastic voice when they hear one!
"We Told You So, Imus" the Muslims Rejoice (News Bloggers)
Apr 13th 2007 6:57PM I fail to see where I should be ashamed for my comments and opinions.
You present yours as I present mine, as an adult, in the hopes of having a valuable discussion without name calling.
THAT is free speech.
Ms. Jackson, please don't let one man's comment speak for us all. I don't think (and quite honestly would be surprised to find) that ALL white people consider ALL black people nappy headed ho's.
That's not the case, nor is it the basis of this discussion.
As has been stated overwhelmingly throughout this blog, most agree that Don Imus was a dumbass for making his comment.
It seems also that the overall opinion is that he's not racist or prejudiced....he hates everyone.
The outcry is over his losing his job because financial supporters were pressured into pulling out of his programs.
He wasn't fired for the comment he made. He was put on a two week suspension. Whatever happened to one crime, one punishment? It seems we've not only applied a double standard to this situation, but also a kind of double jeopardy.
Aside from all this, you have the Al Sharpton's and Jesse Jackson's of the world adding fuel to a smoldering fire.
And racism isn't just a black thing, as one would be led to believe by them. Nor is prejudice.
For instance, I have many tattoos visible on my body. Often, people look down their noses at me or just assume I'm some kind of biker bitch.
I have two choices. I can either ignore their ignorance or I can make a big ta-doo out of nothing...which would sort of justify their own thoughts and opinions.
Nobody can make you something you are not - unless you permit them to do so.
The black community would have everyone believe they are still oppressed. But take a real hard look around. We have black leaders, we have black business owners, we have black teachers, just as we have these same positions filled by other races.
Everyone in this country has the opportunity to better themselves, stay where they are, or fall into things best left alone.
Those who recognize the possibilities available to them, know they have to work to achieve those goals and most know we're not a county built on handouts or that we are entitled to something because of the color of our skin.
I'm as white as the wind driven snow and I'm not ashamed of it, nor will I pretend to be in order to make someone else feel better about themselves.
You can't help what you are, but you damn sure can change who you are....IF you so choose.
Many people criticize the fact that the black culture have their own black history month, Miss Black America Pageant, Black Entertainment Television, etc.
Many feel that if white Americans or Asian Americans chose to have a Miss White America, it would get the same media attention that this Imus comment has over the past week. And they're right.
It would again label us as racists while the black culture doesn't see theirs as being the same.
A black woman CAN enter the Miss America Pageant, but a white woman CANNOT enter the Miss Black America Pageant. It's a race thing, yanno?
And I hate to break it to ya', but blacks are no longer the minority in this country.
Decent human beings are.
There are too many double standards to suit me and many others here, as well.
If racism is to end, then it must end in every part of society.
From what I understand, Don Imus met with the Rutgers players today and once again apologized for his comment.
The Rutgers players accepted his apology and are choosing to move on.
In my opinion, those young ladies handled themselves with dignity, respect, and common sense.
A lesson many of the rest of us could take note of and learn from in the future.
