5 Essential Tips to Keep Your PC Safe (Switched)
Oct 5th 2009 5:50PM I wasn't implying people use both, I was suggesting the least they could do is use the built in firewalls, but also suggest third party options. Most third party firewalls will turn off or offer to turn off the built in options when installed. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Oct 5th 2009 10:35AM Daniel that is simply not true, I've used AVG, among plenty of other security products, on numerous PCs for years. There is a completely free version of AVG anti-virus. They try to convince you to buy one of their non-free products, but you are by no means required to sign up for anything to get anti-virus software from AVG

That isn't true at all. There is a premium version with some more features, but CCleaner will fix all found problems with out paying for it. All downloads (except AppZapper which is noted) are completely free in this article.

Feb 12th 2009 4:04PM Christine, if your e-mails are on AOL there is no need to back them up they're online and not on your PC. As for your local files, simply buy an external hard drive and copy your documents etc. to it, or you can burn them to a CD.
Flashback: Young Bill Gates, Steve Jobs Play 1983 Mac Dating Game (Video) (Switched)
Jan 29th 2009 11:50PM @Bob Burrill
Windows 1.0 may have hit the scene in 1985, but it wasn't until the release of Windows 3.0 in 1990 that Windows became a popular and viable operating system alternative. Before that barely anyone used Windows, I myself stuck primarily with DOS until the release of Windows 95.
I didn't have my facts mixed up, was simply working by a different standard. However I will take issue with your insinuation that Microsoft was working stealthily to bury Apple, they publicly announced Windows in 1983, doesn't seem to secretive to me.
World's Most Overrated Gadgets and Technologies 18 (Switched)
Jan 4th 2009 10:50PM Mike, actually as the author of this post I use Ubuntu everyday (wrote this very story on my Think Pad X40 loaded with Hardy). I ditched Windows completely several years ago and have been an avid Ubuntu user since 5.04. That doesn't change the fact that Ubuntu has major flaws and obstacles to overcome before it can truly be placed side by side with Windows and OS X as a viable alternative for consumers.
Cell Phones Bad for the Soul, Says Vatican (Switched)
Nov 26th 2008 7:40PM You guys take everything way too seriously.
But allow me to defend my light hearted post anyway...
You can easily read his comments as saying that cell phones are bad for the soul. By being part of the noise and distraction that are preventing the faithful from developing satisfying spiritual lives it leads to losing your soul.
The interpretation is hyperbolic for the sake of entertainment and to draw in the reader. By the way I am Catholic, was in choir, was an altar boy, went to a catholic school for my first 10 years of school plus a year in a Catholic university. Have a sense of humor people.
It is actually good advice, but the Vatican is certainly not immune mockery.
eHarmony Creates Separate But Equal Site for Gays (Switched)
Nov 25th 2008 4:42PM @Toria, your comment makes no sense. Clearly you do hate, and you discriminate. Just cause you disagree with a persons life style doesn't give you the right to deny them basic freedoms like employment and legal rights. How would you feel if someone refused to serve you at a Starbucks because of your views on gays. You are not a law abiding citizen based purely on the views you express here.
@Bob, It may be a private business but the devil is in the marketing. If eHarmony marketed itself as an online Christian singles club that would be one thing, but as a service that makes no such distinction it is clearly in violation of anti-discrimination laws. Serving heterosexuals is not niche marketing, since it advertises itself to the general public as a non-targeted dating site to exclude based on sex, race, or orientation is against the law. This isn't the same as a site that caters to gays, a better analogy would be a site that catered to white couples only. The problem is homophobia is more acceptable than racism in our society, which is why people would be up in arms if eHarmony excluded blacks, but seem to be generally accepting of it excluding gays.
