Shell Eco-marathon rises to the challenge, students get 2,564.8 mpg [w/video] (Autoblog Green)

Apr 19th 2011 5:36PM I get that 600 mpg requires some extreme mods, but 100 mpg shouldn't be impossible. Especially with the engineering staff at a large auto company vs a few students.

This doesn't look like it would be too far from a 'normal' car that people would buy if it got 100 mpg+. But you can't own one right now because no car company sells a cheap, basic model, that has some tech and aerodynamic features to boost mpg. Yet, still has the structure and safety features. Basically, build a cheap NASCAR that can go really long distances instead of the fastest.

Apr 19th 2011 4:05PM And why isn't GM (or any other auto maker) selling a car that can get just 100 mpg?

Then again, I would need to buy a car that could get 150 mpg now to be able to drive the same distance for the same price per mile as in 1999.

GM's Larry Nitz says public charging stations aren't really necessary (Autoblog Green)

Apr 19th 2011 1:21PM I would like to have charging stations at the beach, at the golf course, at the mall, airport, museums, parking garages, etc...

But there needs to be some type of reservation system that will only unlock the power for the car that reserve it until it gets to 100%, then anyone can use it by parking next to the first car and disconnecting it...

Apr 18th 2011 1:35AM I have a Saturn with plastic body panels, and they still look great 16 years later...

I would love to see more fiberglass body panels or truck beds, aluminum or carbon fiber hoods, and good plastic parts (not screws...GM).

I doubt that the Union has any agreements, but I wouldn't put it past the steel industry to give bonuses to certain people if they use XX amount. There has to be some reason Saturn became "Just Another Car Company" instead of "A Different Car Company".

DOE to hand out $112.5 million under SunShot solar power inititative (Autoblog Green)

Apr 14th 2011 9:42AM As someone who is currently putting a PV system together, the biggest problem for the DIYer is having to design the entire system and purchase all of the components separately. Instead, I should be able to purchase a pre-built charge controller, inverter, disconnects, fuses, lightning, grounding, etc system all put together. Then I just plug in the solar panels, and plug it into the grid.

Apr 12th 2011 2:14PM It would be nice to see a big automaker assembly-line these to bring the costs down. They need to be able to get it down to ~$8,000 to sell a lot of them ($15,000 car). It will be a challenge though.

They could come up with basic models or have 3rd party companies design different models to bolt on.

It would be like computer programming. The big components have standard ways that they interface with each other, but their design can be very different.

Germany, Italy, France argue over European plug standards for electric vehicles (Autoblog Green)

Apr 12th 2011 11:52AM Why can't we just have one worldwide standard EV plug (the J1772)?

It works, it would bring costs down if it were the same everywhere, and it would save having to have adapters.

Apr 10th 2011 9:52PM Allowing truckers who are willing to drive at 55mph a few more hours on the clock would probably save a lot more. They save money by burning less diesel and still go the same distance.

Apr 8th 2011 12:40AM The Captain of the cruise my parents went on said the boat got 8 gallons per mile...so I think a new reactor design should be designed & tested, however built to be ultra reliable. It can be done.

I think part of the problem is that we don't want foreign nations to have nuclear powered military ships based on this design, yet we want them to convert their shipping vessels...
