Ugly Broadband Boxes Not Welcome in Our Towns {Switched.com}
Aug 23rd 2008 11:41AM It's just a matter of cost. Yeah, these things are ugly and I wouldn't want one next to my house, but if he companies spent a little more money they could be buried. As the article says, Verizon does it.
When Cell towers first started going up I lived in Mountain Brook in Alabama. They objected to the ugly towers, but the wealthy citizens wanted their reception so the cell companies painted them brown, placed them in the middle of pine thickets & put fake branches on them. They blended right in.
Another solution was to pay local churches to place the transmitters in the steeples.
There are ways around these huge, ugly boxes, they just eat into the profits a bit
Harvard professor predicts railroads will return to prominence in the U.S. {Autoblog Green}
Apr 15th 2008 12:10PM BRANDON, I've seldom had an issue with delays on Amsouth, althought they do occur. The problem is that they don't have dedicated tracks. They lease the use of the tracks from the freight tains companies.
As a result, when ever a freight train & a passenger train meet, the freight train gets the right of way and the passenger train has to wait.
Dedicated HSR would solve this issue. CERVUS, get real! Transportation is a government issue and it's far too expensive for a private venture. Let's pull out of Iraq, stop subsidizing airlines, and giving away free social services to illegal alians. That should cover the cost in a year!

Apr 15th 2008 12:00PM I live in New Orleans and travel to Atlanta frequently. Whenever possible I go by train. The trip is less than two hours by plane, 7 by car & 12 by train.
The flights, while comfortable & fast almost 5 times the cost of the basic train fare IF you book well in advance, They can double that if you need a last minute trip. Driving is boring & uncomfortable.
I usually get a sleeper compartment which is less than half the cost of flying and less than gas in the car. I nap, read a bood, watch a movie on my lap top, have a drink in the club car while reading the complementary news paper, and I enjoy 3 very good meals in the dining car. It's over all an extremely relaxing & enjoyable trip.
If we could get highspeed rail service I'd be delighted.

Mar 14th 2008 11:19AM I am SOOO tired of this afro-centric retoric. Black people, LISTEN: You are NOT Africans! You are AMERICANS who are decended from African Slaves. White Americans did not inslave your ancestors. They bought them from Black Africans who raided their villages, slaughtered the very old and very young, raped the women and then inslaved the strong. Some were sold to white traders, others forced into slavery for the stronger black tribes and the very unlucky were sacrificed to idols.
Slavery wasn't invented because plantation owners needed cotton pickers, it was alive and well in Africa long before the Dutch started trading in human cargo.
If you want to take your fair share of what America, YOUR country, has to offer, then integrate with society. Don't walk around in clown costumes holding your pants up with one hand and saying "Sup?"
Get a job, get off welfare, blend! Oh, and don't even go there with "No one will hire me, I can't get a job."
Look in the mirror. Make sure you want a job. I live in New Orleans. There are hundreds of places begging for clean, honest workers yet every day I see hundreds of young, able bodied young black men and women walking around aimlessly.
If you want to succeed, take responsibility, not government handouts. Teach your children, govern your own people, learn the language and use it, "Ebonics" isn't going to get you where you want to be, crack down on the drug dealers in your neighborhoods and stop using white Americans as scapegoats for your lack of success.
White America doesn't owe you a ANYTHING. The debt has been paid. Generations have grown up in government housing with welfare and foodstamps. Earn your own way and leave these these supplements to those who need them, the old, sick & injured. You have the same access to education my children did, use it!
Show some REAL pride, not some misguided "African Pride" I repeat "YOU ARE NOT AFRICANS!"
Are you too pretty to fly? {Gadling}
Feb 25th 2008 11:46AM Well hello Ana!Check her out on the cover of "Elle" and judge for yourself. She's been on the cover once & in the speads on several occasions as well as in other fqshion magazines.
You of course must be "Pretty" too, because you missed the entire point of my comment. Pretty doesn't mean squat. It's how you present yourself and more so how you treat the others around you that matters.
Are you too pretty to fly? {Gadling}
Feb 24th 2008 9:12PM Well this pretty much says it all :"[The flight attendants] were like older ladies." "like" older ladies? Typical self centered brats, and I agree, quite average looking.
I have three daughters, all of them are stunning. The oldest is a higly paid professional model and has been since she was 13. I taught them very early that manners and curtesy were far more important than looks. My girls can fly anywhere!
Nissan's All-Electric Concept Car {Switched.com}
Jan 1st 2008 1:10PM I can't remember which maker is was, but I was reading a few months ago about a hybrid that's about to hit the market. It's basically an electric car but it has a small gasoline motor, sort of lke a lawnmower that can be turned on to power a generator that charges the battery. Once moving the motion of the wheels powers the generator. I can't believe now one has thought of it sooner.

Dec 22nd 2007 9:56AM HP has them trumped, and by months. They have an all in one unit with a touch screen. No mouse needed. You can even do away with the keyboard and type onto the screen, but it's sort of awkward. BTW, I have a gateway laptop, top of the line- HATE IT!
When adoption doesn't 'work out' {ParentDish}
Dec 21st 2007 10:54AM I agree with ParentDish. It's true that when you adopt, you never know what you'll get. But unfortunately, it's the same with biological children. Take my brother and me for instance. Two boys, 6 years apart, raised by stable, loving parents in what was a million dollar mansion in the 60's.
I'm the oldest, now 53. I was well behaved and well mannered. I was an honor student all thru school, an Eagle Scout, I graduated from a top university at the head of my class. I went on to make a 6 figure income and raise 4 beautiful and sucessful children.
My younger brother was a different story. He got in with the wrong crowd in middle school, started doing drugs & at the age if 16 was expelled from school. He joined the military and was dishonorably discharged. He's spent his life doing drugs and stealing to pay for them. He's never had a home of his own and never managed to even rent a place of his own for more then 4 months at a time. He and his live in girlfriend produced a child while both were doing heroin. Amazingly this little boy, who's being raised by my parents is now 12 and well behaved, loving and extremely gifted.
So here you have the same stable parents, same upperclass home enviroment and totally different outcomes. Where's the logic there?
