If the servers are paid by the restaraunt, the price of the food will go up to make up for it. Right now you have the choice to tip what they should get. I'm sure servers would love to force some of their customers to pay what they owe. That's just not how it works, yet..... :)

Oct 21st 2009 1:53PM The number of comments here let me know I am not the only one passionate about this topic.
I was a server for the better part of my teens and twenties. I will admit that I grab the brown lettuce for the jerks salad and not fill his bowl of soup as full as the next, pleasant customers.
I however, would NEVER EVER do something gross to someone's food.
The straw that broke the camels back: A middle aged couple with adult children would come in 2-3 times per week. The parents would pay for their kids and one's boyfriend (whom all lived in the nest still- with no jobs) Not tipping, ever, irritated us all. I was fed up and told them so. Their excuse: "They live with us and don't work, so we can't afford a tip. None of our servers has ever said anything to us before..." I was livid! I let it out and it felt GREAT! I put in my 2week notice the following day. The owner, to this day, (over a year later) still asks me to pick up shifts. (Which I very politely decline)
