Hackers Could Remotely Disable Your Car's Brakes, Report Finds (Switched)
May 25th 2010 7:00AM The Sky is Falling!!! OMG.
Seriously. The "hacker" has to break into your car, hook up a gizmo to your OBD port, and then dowload firmware "hack".
The headline in 1915 might have well have been:
"Model T Ford can have it's brake lines cut or the tires punctured!"
"Convertible tops can be slashed and promote robbery and vandalism"
Seriously? Seriously?
Westboro Baptist Church Protests, Gets Protested Outside Twitter (Asylum)
Feb 1st 2010 7:52AM As a christian... I really **detest** these Westboro folks. They are the 'Al-qaeda' of the christian world, and do **not** represent what Jesus taught us or asked us to do.
Hebrews 11:14 Make every effort to live in peace with **all men**
[sort of opposite of what these terrible WBC people are doing, isn't it???]
This WBC has it sooo backward from how Jesus did it so right 2000 years ago... love others first, and you gather followers second.
Love you all,
Cheers!

Xbox 360 officially the only console to stream Netflix -- sorry, PS3 and Wii (Engadget HD)
Aug 18th 2009 3:09AM So it's not "free" streaming... it costs a gold membership.
Pass....
I'll stream over my HTPC computer to my big screen. It'd be nice to stream over my PS3, to avoid having to change input channels... but I will never give M$ one penny. I'll buy the games, but that's where the money pit ends...
Plucky little iPhone 3GS confounds expectations, tops Japanese sales for July (Engadget)
Aug 18th 2009 2:31AM As a military person stationed over here, the on-base Softbank company had a promotion for a FREE iPhone with subscription. It did "cost" you upfront, but there was a montly rebate that would have you paid back for the iPhone in 24 months.
Military members and family members were LINED UP to buy them at the on-base sales centers.
The locals prefer DoCoMo because it has a reputation of better wireless coverage vice Au or Softbank. Whether that is true, I have not found that to be the case here on Okinawa. Whatever you get, you better make it match your family and friends for free calls. If you don't match companies, it gets very expensive (in some cases, 40c per minute...)
The subscriptions cost less per month here ($10 a month for some accounts), but you pay per minute to the person you're calling, and SMS is expensive, too, unless you get the higher-end all-included packages. What's nice is that the subsciptions have variable charging with caps. So you won't be surprised by a $2000 phone bill.

The reciever of the call pays nothing. And there are no "minutes" you use for receiving a call.
Judging the Tesla Roadster and Chevy Volt by different standards (Autoblog Green)
May 27th 2008 8:06PM My "economy" car is my 2005 C6 Corvette, V-8, 400HP: I get 32MPG highway! More than my little 4-banger Volvo ever got....
Can't wait to buy into the PHEV concept, though... I love tech, and am willing to pay for it: whether it's a HEMI musclecar or a PHEV with Li-ion batteries...
Cheers!
Xbox 360 Blu-ray console shipping by September? (Engadget)
May 6th 2008 11:53AM Too late, Mr. Gates.... I just got my PS3 with BR last week. I still love my XBOX360 w/ HD-DVD... but since you didn't release a BR external drive, Sony got my 400 bucks instead of Microsoft.
Too Slow, sir! M$ should have anticipated the death of BR, or at least the stalemate and offered CHOICE... wierd concept, eh?
Respectfully,

90,000 HD DVD players sold in one weekend (Engadget HD)
Nov 7th 2007 1:11PM 1. Now I have an Xbox360 HD-DVD add-on, and two HD-A2's (just got the two at Wally World).
2. Gorgeous 1080i picture on LCD, plasma and rear proction 1080p displays.
3. Make sure you download the 2.5 firmware upgrade... easy to burn an ISO and upgrade the new HD-A2's.
4. Upscaling SD DVD's also looks great... a great price for HD-DVD *and* an upconverting DVD player!
5. Get Netflix and they will automatically send you the HD-DVD version of the movie you're renting if available... sweet! So far about 70% of the recently released movies we've rented lately have been in HD-DVD format, and about 20% only in BD format (so we had to watch the SD version).
Hybrid = luxury car with the lowest operating cost (Autoblog Green)
Oct 8th 2007 11:26AM As a hard-working bloke worth about 3/4 million US$, I got there one dollar at a time: sack-lunches, no lattes, shopping for the cheapest fuel, doing my own oil changes, eating out only once a week (not twice a day like some of my "poor" friends, and driving my cars for at least six years or 150,000 miles.
So, I greatly appreciate articles spelling out long-term costs, like the aforementioned Forbes article.
To quote Dave Ramsey: "Live today like no other, so that later, you can live like no other."
I'm on my way to retiring COMPLETELY at age 50... and penny-pinching is the reason.
You don't have to make a million bucks to become a millionaire, just be WISE with your money. Buy high quality when you NEED it, not just WANT it... If I bought everything I wanted, I'd be drowning in consumer debt and POOR, regardless of income.
Current stable (in case you wonder if I'm suffering in my penny-pincing ways):
2000 Lexus GS400
2005 SLK350 (replaced a 8 year old SLK)
2005 Corvette Z51 (replaced penny for penny a 30 year old sports car requiring too much maintenance).
