Oct 22nd 2007 3:03PM I can't help but laugh at the idea that Rowling is somehow cheating by providing us with further information that she didn't include in her books. No one complained when she said she would probably work on an encyclopedia-style book containing backstory and other info that didn't make it into the books! If the backstory were exactly the same but with Grindewald as a woman, everyone would think that was so sweet and touching... and no one would resent it.

I'm amazed that these people can read a series of books that's essentially about tolerance, internalize the message, and then balk as soon as they find out what exactly they're supposed to be tolerant about.

Jan 10th 2007 12:07PM When I was little, my uncles gave me a cold beer can to suck on because I was teething. Everyone still thinks the pictures of little toddler me gumming a can of beer is hilarious. It's the juxtaposition that makes it funny.

Of course, if I'd actually been given beer to drink, the funny aspect would have been outweighed by the seriousness of a situation involving idiotic adults and an unhealthy child.

I agree with this article, by the way--a lot of these studies, and the sensational way in which they're reported, exist just to sell themselves. They have nothing to do with informing parents, giving useful advice, or anything practical.

Your kid might not breathe right if you strap them in the car seat too tight? We needed a STUDY for that? It's just for the headlines that appeal to those parents who enjoy hitting the panic button.

Feb 26th 2006 11:25AM "Lost or stolen"? They couldn't have been keeping very good track of it if they aren't sure which. I don't blame the Academy for refusing to replace a statuette that was "lost or stolen" due to neglect and carelessness. They've replaced statuettes that were destroyed or stolen through no fault of the winner. To give them out willy nilly would just diminish their value. After all, why take care of it if you can just ask for a replacement?
